When Speak Becomes Skip : A Textbook Analysis of Oral Tasks in Years 4–6 and Students’ Perceptions of These (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyze oral tasks in two English language textbooks for upper primary school and to examine how these tasks are perceived by students in relation to engagement, motivation, and willingness to use the target language. Based on observations made during school placement, a qualitative textbook analysis and semi-structured interviews with eight students were conducted. The textbooks were analyzed using qualitative content analysis, while the interview data were analyzed thematically.

The findings show that the textbooks contain several types of oral tasks, with pair work and semi-structured activities being the most common. The tasks provide opportunities for oral interaction but often limit spontaneous language use. The students generally expressed positive attitudes towards oral activities but requested more varied and authentic tasks. Foreign Language Anxiety, a sense of security, and classroom relationships influenced the students' willingness to use English orally. Overall, the study indicates that students' oral participation is influenced both by the design of the tasks and by how they are implemented in classroom practice.
