Abstract [en]
This study is a bachelor thesis in the field of Information design with focus on Visualization and Text design. It explores how gamification, tone of voice, and subject-matter related humor can be used to create a positive and motivating experience regarding crisis preparedness for the recipient. The purpose has been to design a physical board game to educate the target audience on the importance of having an emergency kit at home and to investigate how this can be achieved in an engaging rather than alarming manner.
The design process initiated with a situational analysis of the official brochure If Crisis or War Comes as well as two similar games. Through an iterative design process, a game prototype was developed and initially evaluated through a user test. This was followed by adjustments and evaluations of the game’s mechanics and graphic design. The finished artifact resulted in a board game featuring narrative crisis scenarios, random events, and question cards where players can win resource tokens required to manage the various unfolding scenarios. The final product was evaluated through user tests with a total of ten participants from the target audience. Data was collected through surveys before and after the play sessions to measure the participants’ attitudes and experiences.
The results show that traditional crisis information (e.g., the MSB brochure) induces a sense of stress in most of the participants within the target audience (72,7%), whereas the final design successfully managed to reverse this negative effect. All participants saw the game as both entertaining and informative, with 100% stating that the tone of the game helped them maintain focus on the information. Furthermore, the participants reported that humorous elements made the facts easier to absorb and that the game prompted them to reflect on their own crisis preparedness. The study’s conclusion confirms, among other things, the theories of Instructional Humor Processing Theory and Emotional Design as effective tools for engaging and motivating young adults (18–30-year-olds) toward practical preparedness through subject-matter related humor and casual tone.
