The employable economist : A qualitative case study on how competencies and attributes are represented in university education and the labour market (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Research questions:
1) What differences exist between the competencies and attributes demanded by the labour market and those developed within university business programmes, and what consequences may these differences have for graduates’ employability?
2) What can neoinstitutional theory contribute to explaining why the differences between education and the labour market arise?
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to, drawing on neoinstitutional theory, identify differences between the competencies and attributes demanded by the labour market and those developed within university business programmes. The study further aims to examine what neoinstitutional theory can contribute to explaining why these differences arise, as well as to analyse the potential consequences they may have for economics graduates’ employability.
Method: The study employs a qualitative document analysis, in which programme syllabi and job advertisements have been analysed using thematic analysis to identify differences in how competencies and attributes are formulated within education and the labour market respectively.
Conclusion: The study demonstrates that a gap exists between the competencies and attributes sought in job advertisements and the learning outcomes formulated in university business programmes. The gap is most pronounced with regard to accounting knowledge, digital and systems competence, and personal attributes. All of which are central to the labour market but lack anchorage in programme syllabi. Drawing on neoinstitutional theory, the differences are explained by the fact that universities and employers belong to distinct organisational fields with differing norms and legitimacy requirements, which sustains the gap without any actor actively pursuing it.
