The impact of reading aloud on children’s language development : Preschool teachers' perceptions of working methods and challenges in reading aloud as a language-developing practice (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to deepen knowledge about preschool teachers' work with reading aloud in preschool with a language development purpose. In this qualitative study, we have used semi-structured interviews. We have interviewed nine preschool teachers from different preschools and gained insight into their work with reading aloud. The theoretical starting point of the study is based on a sociocultural perspective. The study has been analyzed with a phenomenographic approach because we want to examine variation in preschool teachers' perceptions of reading aloud. The results show that preschool teachers use several different strategies to engage and increase children's participation during reading aloud. The preschool teachers adapt the content of the books for reading aloud sessions to the level of the children's groups. The preschool teachers use tools and create enjoyment through aesthetic forms of expression. However, there are factors that affect how reading aloud is planned and produced, in relation to the size of the children's group and language variations.
