Abstract [en]
This study investigates the conditions and challenges related to the reuse of concrete elements within the Swedish construction sector. The purpose is to examine how different types of structural connections affect disassembly, identify the main barriers to quality assurance, and analyses how early-stage reuse requirements set by clients can help reduce climate impact. The study also explores how such requirements can promote circular material flows in construction projects. The research is based on interviews with industry representatives, a literature review, a questionnaire survey with demolition companies, and a study visit to a prefabrication facility. Results show that the absence of standards, CE marking, and proper documentation are significant obstacles to reuse. Bolted connections are considered the most suitable for disassembly and reuse, whereas welded and cast-in-place connections pose greater difficulties. The findings also demonstrate that reuse requirements set during early planning stages are crucial for enabling reuse and reducing climate impact. Despite increasing interest in the industry, further development in knowledge, standardized processes, and technical solutions is needed for reuse to become a common practice. The conclusions highlights that the reuse of concrete elements is possible and environmentally beneficial, provided that standardized connections, early phase planning, and design for future disassembly are implemented.
