Is the Question More Important Than the Answer in Conversations with an AI : A Postphenomenological Study of Students’ Experiences of AI in Higher Education (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore how students use and experience generative AI in their academic work. With particular focus on how they formulate prompts and how this affects their learning. Ten qualitative interviews were conducted with students from various educational backgrounds. The material was analyzed thematically, using a postphenomenological. The results show that AI is used to support multiple aspects of studying: understanding assignments, structuring texts, revising for exams, and improving academic language. Several participants described AI as a sounding board or a second brain, rather than a tool and developed their own strategies for crafting more effective prompts. Use often takes place independently. Without clear guidance, placing demands on the student’s prior knowledge and ability to evaluate the relevance of AI-generated responses. The study identifies four key themes: AI as a learning partner, the role of the question, technological mediation in meaning-making and the disconnect between student practices and institutional structures. The findings indicate that AI supports learning, but that its usefulness depends on the student’s ability to formulate questions. Assess the quality of responses. Prior subject knowledge thus emerges as a crucial factor in determining whether AI outputs are relevant or misleading.
