Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background:The end-of-life is the final phase of life, marked by physical, psychological, and existential suffering, as well as preparations for death. Care during this phase presents significant challenges for patients, relatives, and healthcare professionals.Nurses may face challenges in alleviating anxiety, pain, and existential uncertainty, while family members feel helpless and sorrowful. Nurses play a key role in end-of-life care but face challenges like time constraints, ethical dilemmas, and limited resources. Aim: To highlight patients’ experiences of receiving care at the end of life. Method: A general literature review based on 13 scientific articles, including both qualitative and quantitative articles to provide a broader understanding of patients’ experiences. Results: The articles shared similar aims focusing on patients’ experiences at the end of life but differed in specific focus and formulation. Data collection was mainly conducted through interviews, questionnaries, and surveys. The analysis methods varied and included thematic analysis, ATLAS.ti, statistical tests and ANOVA. Three main categories emerged: 1) Preparation for the end of life. 2) The significance of communication in end-of-life care. 3) External and internal Factors affecting quality of life at the end of life. Conclusion: Personalized and dignified end-of-life care reduces anxiety and increases security. Improved communication and competence among healthcare professionals promote participation and support for both patients and their relatives.
