Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

ABSTRACT

Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are a common occurrence particularly among athletes. Psychological factors affect the rehabilitation process for these patients. Therefore, physiotherapists play a crucial role in helping patients overcome the psychological barriers that may arise with such injuries to improve rehabilitation outcomes.

Aim: To describe physiotherapists’ experiences of working with psychological factors in the rehabilitation of ACL injuries.

Method: A qualitative interview study using purposive convenience sampling. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews with eight participants and was analyzed using qualitative content analysis with inductive approach.

Results: The participants’ experiences were presented in three main categories and nine subcategories. The main categories were; Physiotherapists as knowledge carriers, The patients’ ability to handle the rehabilitation process, and Collaboration to create trust and alliance. The main categories were; Physiotherapists as knowledge carriers, The patients’ ability to handle the rehabilitation process and Collaboration to create trust and alliance.

Conclusion: All participants agreed that the patients’ psychological factors play a significant role in the rehabilitation process and its outcome in the case of these injuries, but there is no clear framework for addressing them. Therefore, further research is needed to systematically implement psychological interventions into physiotherapist’ practice.
