Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Research questions: How do consumers engage with cashless payments? How do consumers view the need for cash in today's digital economy? What factors influence consumers' perception of the transition to a cashless society?

Purpose: The study examines how the cash phase-out in Sweden affects consumers choice of payment method and commitment. The aim is to increase understanding of consumer behavior in a cashless society and identify factors that affect society at large.

Method: With a qualitative research design consisting of a questionnaire and focus group interviews as an approach for data and empirical collection, the phenomenon has been investigated with the aim of answering the research questions and fulfilling the purpose of the study.

Conclusion: Finally, the study shows that there are shared opinions and experiences that influence consumers' attitude towards the cashless society. Although factors such as trust, control and security are constantly being tested in the use of cashless payments and this should in turn affect engagement and perception, the majority continue to use them. There is a strong fear of exclusion as well as a strong current of consumer behavior that prevents change. Despite negative factors, cashless payments continue to attract users. However, there resistance to the phase-out of cash, which suggests that the debate around its benefits may arouse the interest and commitment of more people.
