Bakgrund: Palliativ vård är något som de flesta sjuksköterskor kommer i kontakt med under professionen. Palliativ vård bygger på ett förhållningssätt som kännetecknas av en helhetssyn på människan. Sjuksköterskor har ett stort ansvar för att lindra lidande samt stödja patienter att leva med största möjliga välbefinnande till livets slut. Dessutom ska sjuksköterskor respektera patienters önskemål och behov vid livets slutskede, samt ge stöd till patienters anhöriga.

Syfte: Att beskriva sjuksköterskors upplevelser av att vårda i livets slutskede.

Metod: En kvalitativ litteraturstudie med beskrivande syntes.

Resultat: Sjuksköterskor upplevde både positiva och negativa aspekter vid vårdandet av patienter i livets slutskede. De positiva aspekterna presenteras i temat vårdandets betydelse, vilket innefattar tre subteman: vikten av att vara medveten och uppmärksam, tillfredsställelse genom att visa närvaro, samt vikten av betydelsefulla relationer. De negativa aspekterna sjuksköterskor upplevde presenteras i temat begränsningar i vårdandet, vilket innefattar subteman saknad av kunskap, känsla av tidsbrist samt känslomässig påverkan.

Slutsats: Sjuksköterskor upplevde vårdandet i livets slutskede som tillfredsställande och uppmärksamhet som betydelsefull. Goda relationer med medarbetare, patienter och anhöriga upplevs viktigt och kan resultera i bättre vård. Sjuksköterskor upplevde även begränsningar i vårdandet på grund av brist på tid och kunskap, samt på grund av egen känslomässig påverkan.

Background: Most of nurses provide palliative care during their profession. Palliative care is based on an approach that is characterized by a holistic view of the person. Nurses have a great responsibility to alleviate suffering of palliative patients and to support them to live with the greatest possible well-being to the end of their lives. In addition, nurses must respect the patients’ wishes and needs at the end of their lives and provide support to patients’ relatives.

Aim: To describe nurses’ experience of end-of-life caring.

Method: Qualitative literature study with descriptive synthesis.

Results: Nurses experienced both positive and negative aspects in end-of-life caring. The positive aspects are introduced in the theme the importance of caring, which includes the subthemes: the importance of being aware and observant, satisfaction by being present and the importance of meaningful relationships. The negative aspects are presented in the theme limitations in caring, which includes the subthemes: lack of knowledge, feeling the lack of time and emotional impact.

Conclusion: Nurses experienced end-of-life caring satisfactory and awareness as significant. Good relationships with co-workers, patients and patients’ relatives were perceived important and can result in better care. Nurses experienced limitations in caring due to lack of time and knowledge and due to emotional impact.
