Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Background : Palliative care at the end of life aims to alleviate suffering, promote quality of life and support relatives. Care should be characterized by symptom relief, communication and person-centered care. Previous research shows that older patients and their relatives value continuity, clear information and involvement in care. Insufficient resources and communication are perceived to reduce the quality of care. Aim : The aim was to investigate nurses experiences of providing palliative care for older adults at the end of life. Method : A general literature review was conducted. 13 scientific articles were included, of which eleven were qualitative and two quantitative. The articles were quality-reviewed and analyzed based on similarities and differences in purpose, method and results. Results : Three main themes were identified: “meeting relatives’ wishes”, “need for skills development” and “the importance of communication”. Nurses experienced that the patients needs and wishes sometimes conflicted with relatives expectations och other circumstances in care. Furthermore, a need for skills development among nurses emerged, and communication was described as a central prerequisite for providing person-centered palliative care. Conclusion : Good palliative care is based on nurses being given good conditions in their work. This means working with clear communication, sufficient skills and with care where the elderly patient’s wishes are at the center of palliative care in the final stages of life.
