Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Wayshowing for the aging population is a thesis in information design with focus on spatial design. The aim with this thesis is to examine how older visitors navigation at the Mälarsjukhus are affected by the rebuilding and the existence of two primary entrances, this with an emphasis on wayfinding strategies and the spatial design.

Furthermore the aim of the project is to create a design proposal that shows how the healthcare environment can be designed with accommodation for the older visitors needs and prerequisites. This proposal can be seen as an alternative solution to make the healthcare environment more available for the older part of the population.

Through observation, notations of the movement, conversations, think-aloud protocol and a answering box it’s been shown that the navigation around the hospital works somewhat. However there are potential improvements to be made to reduce visitor struggle.

A design proposal has been developed, grounded in theory and empirical data. Through a design adapted for wayfinding strategies, the proposal aims to create a space that guides hospital visitors to the correct entrance.
