Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Abstract

Background: Children undergoing perioperative procedures may experience worry and anxiety, which can affect both cooperation and the experience of the care. Virtual reality has therefore emerged as a possible non-pharmacological nursing intervention in anaesthesia care. Aim: To investigate the use of virtual reality for children and its effects on the care experience in a perioperative context. Method: The study was conducted as an integrative literature review. Systematic searches were performed in CINAHL Plus and MEDLINE via PubMed. After screening, full-text review and quality assessment, 28 studies were included and analyzed according to the model described by Whittemore and Knafl. Results: Two main themes were identified: virtual reality as an education tool and distraction with help of virtual reality. Virtual reality was used either to prepare children for the perioperative situation through videos or interactive games, or to distract the child before or during the procedures. The findings mainly showed reduced preoperative anxiety and improved compliance, whereas effects on pain, physiological stress and emergence delirium were more varied. Conclusions: Virtual reality appears to be a promising complement in perioperative care for children. The findings suggest that virtual reality has the potential when adapted to the child’s needs and the specific care situation.
