Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Physical activity is crucial for health, but many university students do not reach recommended levels. The individual's health literacy – the ability to understand, evaluate and use health information – plays a central role in how health-promoting advice is put into practice. For physiotherapists, it is of clinical importance to understand how students without medical training interpret this information to design effective preventive interventions.

Aim: The aim of this study is to examine, from a behavioural medicine perspective, how university students without health care education perceive their health literacy in relation to physical activity, as well as what factors influence their ability to put health information into practice.

Method: The study had a qualitative design with an inductive approach. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with six students at a university in central Sweden. The material was analysed using qualitative content analysis with a focus on manifest content.

Results: The analysis resulted in four categories: Exposure and understanding of health information, Critical source evaluation and subjective plausibility assessment, Individual adaptation and reinterpretation of recommendations, and Implementation in practice – opportunities and obstacles in everyday life. Fourteen subcategories were identified within these. The results show that the students have good basic health literacy in terms of understanding health information, but there is a gap between intention and action regarding physical activity. Factors such as lack of time, social context and the need to adapt general advice to a demanding study schedule appeared as central obstacles.

Conclusion: Health literacy regarding physical activity appears to be a dynamic process where information is continuously evaluated and reinterpreted based on personal circumstances. For physiotherapy practice, this means a need for a person-centred approach where recommendations are adapted to the individual's specific life situation and where the individual's self-efficacy is strengthened to bridge the gap between knowledge and actual behaviour.
