Abstract [en]

Background: Palliative care is focused on alleviating suffering and improving the quality of life for individuals struggling with incurable diseases or injuries. It encompasses a wide spectrum of care, including psychological, physical, existential, and social support for patients. In addition to addressing physical symptoms, it also considers the patients' psychological and spiritual needs to create a holistic care plan. Furthermore, palliative care is not only directed towards the patient but also extends to providing support to their caregivers, which is crucial in creating a supportive and empathetic environment for both the patient and their family members. The aim: Was to describe nurses' experiences of palliative care. Method: Data collection from scientific articles was conducted using a helicopter perspective and an inductive approach. Subsequently, the analysis of the articles was carried out with the support of a literature review according to Friberg's methodology. Results: Three themes were identified; The importance of extensive experience in palliative care, the importance of effective communication, and the importance of good relationships. Conclusion: Nurses experienced that caregiving in palliative care required a relationship with patients and family members built on mutual respect and understanding, and that there was a lack of resources in terms of education and time.
