    Innovation Enablers and Their Importance for Innovation Teams2016Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this research is to develop an understanding of factors that enable innovation teams to conduct agile innovation work in an industrial context. The background and reason for this research are not only that innovation is necessary for companies that want to stay in business, but also that these companies need to increase the speed of their innovation work to stay competitive. Research has demonstrated that cross-functional (X-functional) innovation teams are fast and agile, and are therefore assumed to be suitable for these activities. Still, there is much knowledge to be gained.

    Prior research has identified factors that are seen as important from an organizational, team, and individual perspective to enable teams to work with potentially innovative outcomes. However, in cases where teams have been created with the purpose of conducting innovation work, i.e. innovation teams, problems related to e.g. performance and learning have occurred, and the innovation work has stopped shortly after conducted research projects due to the high level of complexity.

    The research question (RQ) that this thesis explores is the following: “Which innovation enablers are important for innovation teams when conducting agile innovation work in an industrial context?” Based on the RQ, two sub-questions are formulated and operationalized to answer the RQ.

    Qualitative data have been collected from five innovation teams in two phases. Two innovation teams in two small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) were studied in the first phase to clarify the situation for innovation teams before innovation work is begun. In the second phase, which built on the first one, three innovation teams in a large industrial company were studied as they conducted three separate innovation projects.

    This research revealed five main findings: first, knowledge about important innovation enablers (Enablers) revealed from a literature study; second, the Innovation Team Model (ITM), demonstrating innovation teams before innovation work is begun in relation to the individuals and organization in a holistic way; third, the innovation team creation process (CIT-process), a stepwise process in how to create an innovation team; fourth, the innovation facilitator, who supports and facilitates the innovation team throughout the CIT-process and the innovation projects; and fifth, the Extended Innovation Process (EIP), an extension of the traditional innovation process by a pre-phase, i.e. a Preparation-phase, to gather and prepare the innovation teams for forthcoming work. The findings regarding the importance of the CIT-process, the EIP, and the innovation facilitator were unexpected.

    The findings formed the Innovation Team Framework (ITF), which represents all of the findings in relation to each other. The EIP is used as the basis for which the other innovation enablers are provided to the innovation teams through an innovation facilitator’s competence throughout the innovation project. The ITF is multidimensional: it could serve as a tool to describe both the simplicity and the complexity when creating an innovation team and forthcoming work and activities.

    All separate findings within this research contribute to prior research in individual ways, however, the ITF is the main scientific contribution of this study to Innovation management.

    Practitioners can use the ITF as a complement to already established methodologies for product development or similar; however one should be aware of the limited nature of the data set that served as the basis for analysis and development of the ITF.

    Further studies regarding the ITF and its detailed models and processes are suggested.

    This review consolidates research on innovation enablers for

    innovation teams, defined within this research as factors that enable a crossfunctional

    team within an organization to conduct innovation work, to provide a

    deeper understanding of what factors enable innovation teams to conduct

    innovation work, which means that this research involves three areas to provide

    a holistic picture: the organizational context, the team itself, and the individuals

    within the innovation team. A systematic database search was conducted in

    which 208 relevant articles were identified and analyzed thematically way.

    Twenty innovation enablers related to innovation teams were identified:

    awareness, capabilities, climate, collaboration, culture, dedication, economy,

    education, empowerment, entre- / intrapreneurship, human resources,

    incentives, knowledge, knowledge management, management, mind-set, need,

    processes, strategy, and time. This review contributes to prior research a deeper

    understanding of what key factors enable innovative work for innovation teams.

    Suggestions of both academic and practical use for the identified innovation

    enablers are included in this review, and direction for future research is

    suggested.

    Abstract [en]

    Product lifecycles are shorter than ever and agile innovation processes and teams are being developed to meet challenging product lifecycle deadlines. Teaching how to create innovation teams is however shown to be both complex and time consuming, which is not optimal in a time where the business environment demands faster pace when innovating. This research has explored the potential of using Prisoner's dilemma as a workshop tool to stimulate learning and collaboration, which is the core of innovation team’s work, to be further developed to educational tools if being successful. The workshop setting was based on the participating organisations' individual and concrete ideas to be developed, where game elements were designed as game mechanisms. Management from six organisations participated in the research, three of the organisations conducted a workshop designed as a modified Prisoner's dilemma, and the other three organisations participated in a non-gamified workshop based on the same content as the gamified one. Empirical data were collected through statement-based questionnaires, rich field notes, and observations from the video-recorded workshops. The findings indicate that Prisoner's dilemma may be used as a workshop tool for educational purposes. However, significant findings indicate that collaboration felt somewhat mandatory and learning was not optimized due to the dilemma. The research' limitations are discussed and further research is suggested.

    Produktionsoptimering av elektromagnetiska omrörare - "ORD 43P" och "EM Stabilizer"2013Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave

    Examensarbetet inom produktutveckling – konstruktion utfördes under perioden februari till juni 2013 och omfattar 15 högskolepoäng (C-nivå), och är den slutliga kursen inom högskoleingenjörsprogrammet Innovation och produktdesign.

    Examensarbetet behandlade problematiken kring produktionsanpassning och kostnadsoptimering av två stycken elektromagnetiska omrörare vid företaget ABB, Process Automation, Metallurgy i Västerås. Efter kontakt med handledaren från ABB, Jan-Erik Eriksson, påbörjades projektarbetet med att tillverkningsanpassa konstruktionen av produkterna ORD 43P och EM Stabilizer.

    För att åstadkomma kostnadsoptimerad och produktionsanpassad konstruktion tillämpade författarna följande produktutvecklingsverktyg: Design for Cost, Design for Manufacture och Design for Assembly. För att kontrollera att konstruktionen blev optimal, men också att den inte brister under belastning använde examensarbetarna det datorbaserade hållfasthetsverktyget finita elementmetoden i CAD-programmet SolidWorks.

    Val av komponenter baserades på komponenternas pris per kilo.

    För att välja det optimala materialet, det vill säga högsta hållfasthet till lägsta pris använde författarna materialdatabasprogrammet CES EduPack. De utvalda materialen från programmet kunde inte författarna påfinna som standard på marknaden, varför författarna ändrade strategi till att jämföra och välja material utifrån marknadsundersökning av standardmaterial hos leverantörer.  

    ORD 43Ps komponenter optimerades konstruktionsmässigt gentemot befintliga komponenter och härvstag och isolerplattor kostnadsreducerades markant. Komponenten stomme grundutförande undersöktes översiktligt. 

    Genom att produktutveckla komponenterna härvstag, isolerplattor och stomme grundutförande minskade kostnaderna för ORD 43P med 2,47 %. 

    Författarna ansåg att ORD 43Ps totala kostnader kan minska mellan 10-25 % eftersom många av dess komponenter är överdimensionerade och består av dyrare material än vad som krävs. 

    EM Stabilizer’s komponenter, lock och tryckluftsslang, utformades med optimal konstruktion och kostnadsreducerades. 

    Genom att produktutveckla komponenterna lock och tryckluftsslang minskade kostnaderna för EM Stabilizer med 1,3 %. 

    Författarna förmodar att EM Stabilizer’s kostnader kan minska, eftersom den är relativt ny på marknaden. ABB vill säkerställa att produkten uppnår sin garanterade livslängd genom att överdimensionera många av produktens komponenter och använda dyrare material än vad som är nödvändigt.

    Denna rapport innefattar ett examensarbete av Jimmy Kämäräinen Bergstrand, studerande på Mälardalens Högskola inom Ingenjörsprogrammet, Innovation och produktdesign.

    Uppdraget har utförts för företaget Nordic Gym i Bollnäs och utfördes mellan den 2/2-2012 till 9/6-2012.

    Det uppdrag Nordic Gym tilldelade författaren bestod av att konstruera ett prototypunderlag för en CrossFitstation samt ta fram information om vilka träningsövningar denna typ av konstruktion bör erhålla. Då Nordic Gym inte producerar liknande konstruktioner tidigare, vill de ha underlag för att kunna föra in detta i sin verksamhet.

    För att angripa problemet rätt utfördes noggranna förstudier i projektets uppstart. Genom fältstudier som bestod utav funktionstester och intervjuer skapades ett bra grundmaterial för att definiera problemet. I förstudierna utfördes även fördjupning inom träningen CrossFit och mycket ny kunskap togs in, allt ifrån träningsövningar till anatomi för att skapa en bred förståelse om träningsutförandet. För att skapa en förståelse om den nuvarande marknaden upprättades en konkurrentanalys där författaren kunde urskilja hur konkurrenter har löst det uppställda problemet. Studierna visade tydliga krav på hållfasthet och att konstruktionen bör erhålla hög anpassningsbarhet.

    Då författaren klargjort aktuella konkurrenter och fått in produkt- och marknadskrav utifrån förstudierna kunde en QFD skapas. Den hade som syfte att urskilja hur väl konkurrenterna möter de satta kraven som ställs på en CrossFitstation. Här kunde författaren fastställa att MoveStrong är den konkurrenten som uppfyller marknads- och produktkraven bäst.

    Efter fastställd huvudkonkurrent skapades en kravspecifikation som bestod utav krav från marknaden och uppdragsgivaren. Dessa krav har varit riktlinjer och styrt arbetet i rätt riktning.

    I nästa skede påbörjade författaren sin idégenerering och olika koncept började ta form. Totalt blev det åtta koncept som sedan skulle värderas. I samband med värderingen av koncepten hölls ständig kontakt med handledare från uppdragsgivaren Nordic Gym. Därifrån kom mycket input om hur de önskade att konstruktionen skulle formges och vilka material som skulle användas.

    Koncepten värderades med hjälp av Pughs matris, för att urskilja dess styrkor och svagheter. Tre utav de åtta koncept blev väldigt snarlika och fick därför genomgå noggrannare utvärdering. Genom att tillämpa en ny QFD samt en FMEA kunde ett slutgiltigt koncept med viss redigering fastställas. Konceptet skapades i CAD för att upprätta ett utförligt prototypmaterial.

    Vid CAD-konstruktion upptäcktes formgivningsproblem och det skapades totalt sex stycken CAD-koncept innan författaren och uppdragsgivaren var nöjda med slutresultatet.

    För att kunna möta den stora målgruppen av olika kunder och användare har slutresultatet av CrossFitstationen berikats med modulegenskaper, den har totalt 11 stycken olika delar med 13 träningsredskap. Tillsammans skapar de en helt ny CrossFitstation som skall tillfredsställa många olika användare och med hjälp av dess flexibilitet görs detta möjligt.

    I denna rapport presenteras produktutvecklingen av glidbelag till friluftspulkor åt företaget Segebaden. Arbetet är genomfört som ett examensarbete inom Produktutveckling- konstruktion under våren 2012 på Mälardalens Högskola.

     

    Glidbelag är skenor som sitter under friluftspulkor vars syfte är att minska slitaget på pulkan samt minska friktionen mot underlaget. Belagen som finns på marknaden idag är tillverkade i plast och är därför inte speciellt slitstarka. Pulkorna är ofta tungt packade och dras ibland över sten och grus. Detta ger en kraftig nötning på belagen som med tiden får högre friktion mot snön. För att lösa problemet har detta arbete undersökt möjligheterna att tillverka belagen i höghållfast stål istället för plast. 

     

    Arbetet inleddes med en förstudie där problem och behov identifierades. Därefter sammanställdes resultatet och utifrån det genomfördes idégenerering och konceptgenerering. Koncepten utvärderades mot ställda krav och ett slutgiltigt koncept valdes. Under arbetet har mycket tid avdelats till beräkningar och tester för att kontrollera att konstruktionen uppfyller förväntade belastningar.

     

    Resultatet är en bockad stålprofil i det rostfria höghållfasta stålet HyTens 1800. Profilen träs på en plastprofil som monteras på en fästskena som sitter fast på pulkan. Genom denna lösning blir det en jämn yta mot underlaget samtidigt som belaget är lätt att byta. Produkten är tillverkad av återvunnet material och är återvinningsbar. För att få låg friktion mellan belaget och snön används en struktur som är framtagen av Primateria som arbetar med utveckling av glidytor för längdskidor och utförsskidor.

    Abstract [en]

    It is a well-established view that, over time, companies in a business-to-business setting develop long-lasting business relationships. The business relationship between two companies involves a wide range of exchanges on products, technical and economic issues. It also has a social content as it engages people in both companies. Business relationships are, therefore, argued to be founded on a varying extent of exchanges and content of behaviour. This thesis deals with the current and complex issue of the integration of information technology in such business relationships.

    Integration in this thesis refers to when information technology is purposefully used and inseparable from the business relationship. A special standardized questionnaire was used to collect extensive empirical data on 353 business relationships between suppliers and one of their important customers. The results of the analysis of the data in the thesis show that high information technology integration, in terms of exchanges and behaviour, increases the efficiency of information exchanges in business relationships. Integration is also connected to the importance of business relationships for the development of information technology and increases a company’s knowledge on this technology. Furthermore, the results show that what is fundamental for the integration of information technology is its combination with the strength of the business relationship. Thereby, the integration of information technology has a wider impact on business relationships than simply facilitating higher efficiency under certain circumstances. It affects the general competence in using information technology, and allows new opportunities for the business relationship and the companies.

    Through its rich empirical content, theoretical approach and proximity to current business situations, this thesis is of interest to researchers and students who wish to understand the employment of information technology in business relationships, or for business professionals who want to further understand their situation regarding information technology in order to make decisions about further employment.

    Technological Change in an International Industrial System2007Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    Industrial systems resist change, more often, because heavy production facilities and industrial constructions are expensive and have long economic lives, but also because people tend to defend ingrained conceptions of how things are and how activities ought to be performed. Starting out from the question: “How does technological change come about in an international, industrial system?” the thesis investigates the interplay between technological, social, and economic factors. Empirically the work is located to the steel and metals industries and covers business exchange within and between several economic entities performing international business operations.

    It is shown that technological change is driven by strategic intention, but that it also occurs as a result of chance or “necessity”, or follows on everyday enterprise operations. In an attempt to realize strategic intentions actors involve in games of negotiation while referring to different power bases. Backed by organizational role (hierarchic level/managerial position), personal “luminosity” (charisma/leadership), or control over critical resources (that other actors are interested in) various arguments are put to the test on “the arena for negotiations and change”. While involving in negotiations actors may relate to existing business and/or social relations for support or they may take advantage of full-blown coalitions.

    Constrained by the games of negotiation, which unfold in an institutional environment, the process of technological change adopts evidently evolutionary characteristics, and it follows implicitly that the single actor has at its disposal only limited possibilities to determine the process outcome. Technological change as an evolutionary process consists of three underlying sub-processes, viz. innovation, interaction, and institutionalization, it is argued.

    Titel: Läris – Ett roligt inlärningshjälpmedel

    Bakgrund: Hjälpmedelsinstitutet gav i uppdrag att utforma ett hjälpmedel för personer med kognitivt handikapp. Barn i särskolan har ofta ett kognitivt handikapp och har svårt för inlärning och att omforma sina kunskaper. Efter självupplevda erfarenheter av att undervisa och att bli undervisad är användningen av spel och tävlingar ett väl fungerade sätt som, enligt min åsikt, idag inte används i tillräckligt stor utsträckning för inlärning i skolan. Detta är något som eleverna i särskolan borde få ta del av i ett hjälpmedel som underlättar deras kunskapsinhämtning.

    Syfte: Syftet med arbetet är att ta fram ett portabelt hjälpmedel för elever på särskolan som underlättar deras inlärning och gör det på ett roligt sätt.

    Tillvägagångssätt: Författaren har valt att arbeta med litteraturstudier, idégenerering, skissning och därefter samtala med personer inom området kring olika idéer och uppslag. Därefter har en slutgiltig design för produkten skapats.

    Slutsats: Arbetet har lett fram till en produkt som är anpassad efter alla elevers olika förmågor och behov. Den är enkel och tydlig i sitt formspråk och sin informationsdesign. Den har olika funktioner som kan anpassas efter eleven. Produkten använder sig av vanligt förekommande lekar/spel i sin ”undervisning” och som inte kräver ny inlärning av deras funktion.

    Stegia AB har sedan ett antal år tillbaka använt sig av outsourcing i olika former. Initialt med ganska liten egen involvering för att sedan involveras allt mer på senare åt genom en egen fabrik först placerad i Taiwan och nu i Shanghai Kina.

    Verksamheter med global spridda enheter utsätts löpande för utmaningar och svårigheter internt vilka kan kopplas till språk, geografisk läge och kultur utöver de tekniska och organisatoriska utmaningar som finns inom verksamheten. Inom ramen för detta bedriver Stegia AB R&D och försäljning i Sverige samt produktion i Shanghai, Kina. Detta för med sig många svårigheter som detta examensarbete undersöker närmare. Genom en fallstudie har samtliga personer som utbyter information inom företagets enheter involveras i projektet där R&D och produktion i globalt spridda verksamheter undersökts hur det påverkar verksamheten genom olika svårigheter.

    För att genomföra detta har intervjuer skett såväl i Sverige och i Shanghai för att förstå den miljö som arbetet löpande sker i. Data har samlats in från företagets processer kopplade till produktion av egenutvecklade produkter där cykeltider, materialflöden, ledtider och studier i produktionen genomförts för att kartlägga olika faktorer som påverkar det dagliga arbetet.

    Det har visat sig att förtroende mellan de olika enheterna, tid som åtgår för att invänta återkoppling på olika uppgifter samt olika synsätt på arbetet är faktorer med stor inverkan på det dagliga arbetet. För att hantera dessa problem föreslås förflyttningar enheterna emellan för att skapa förståelse för respektive enhet internt såväl om externt. Vidare finns flertalet utmaningar kopplat till kvalitetssäkring och flöden som påverkas av kommunikationen internt i företaget där brist på data och i flera fall felaktig data ger följd fel inom organisationen. Sammantaget blir kommunikationsutmaningarna påtagliga inom dessa typer av verksamheter där många mindre problem snabbt påverkar verksamheten.

    Abstract [en]

    This study reviews literature on paradoxical tensions between value co-creation and capture in interorganizational relationships (IORs). The purpose of this review is to make a re-evaluation of the literature by engaging a paradox theory lens, thereby identifying factors that render tensions salient and factors that lead to virtuous or vicious cycles. This review of 143 articles reveals factors that make tensions salient; these relate to plurality (e.g. coopetition), scarcity (e.g. lack of experience with IORs), change (e.g. changes in collaboration scope) or combinations thereof (e.g. IORs in weak appropriability regimes). Results also uncover factors that resolve paradoxical tensions of value co-creation and capture, thus spurring virtuous cycles (e.g. carefully mixing trust and contracts), as well as factors that promote vicious cycles, owing to the emphasis on either value co-creation or capture (e.g. myopia of learning). This review also uncovers a new category of factors that may stimulate either virtuous or vicious cycles, depending on the extent to which they are enforced. This finding expands the value co-creation–capture paradox resolution, and brings to light new dynamics in the paradox framework of dynamic equilibrium. The authors thus contribute by: (1) reassessing the existing literature and applying paradox theory to the well-known hazard of value co-creation and capture; (2) highlighting factors that amplify paradoxical tensions related to this hazard; and (3) outlining factors that solve the paradox by embracing its contradictory poles and factors that hinder paradox resolution by emphasizing either value co-creation or appropriation.

    Abstract [en]

    In order to develop a well-balanced product, it is necessary to consider not only the customers, but also all the other stakeholders throughout the product's life cycle. A holistic view is needed in order to manage all criteria, considering as many perspectives and interests as possible. This paper presents a model that provides a common understanding for stakeholders involved, together with the requirements, functions and sub-systems of the product being developed. The model supports the decision-making process, and supports the designer to balance the interests of different stakeholders and the related functions. This results in a product developed according to all known demands from various stakeholders. This, in turn, will enhance the possibility of success in the market. The model has been applied in an industrial case study.

    Abstract [en]

    EQpack AB is a company specializing in packaging solutions for the industry. Their range of packaging and packaging solutions is wide, ranging from the automotive & engineering industry, to electronics, pharmaceuticals and food-industry.In the manufacturing process of EQpacks most profitable products, EQspacer, which is a laminated pallet spacer, problems sometimes arise in the form of machine stops. EQspacer consists of a corrugated board laminated in PE foam or PP-fabric.The purpose of the study at EQpack is to create a deeper understanding of what conditions and properties affect the corrugated board sheets before and during production.Based on the purpose and background of the problem, two research questions were formulated:Q1. What affects the reliability of the lift of corrugated board?Q2. How can the reliability of lifting corrugated board improve?The work consists of a literature study, a case study, and practical tests. The literature study was carried out to gain a deeper understanding of the problem. Data collection was produced from books and scientific articles, but also practical in the form of interviews and observations. The case study is built with the help of several different production-development tools, which gives an overview of production and conceptual capabilities. By also testing the theories in practice, a comparison could also be made.The study resulted in two conceptual solutions that consisted of a metal sheet board and an alternative lifting method. Deformed corrugated board with large gaps can mislead the sensors on the machine. The sensor reads the thickness of the corrugated board by reading the measurement from edge to edge. After that, the pallet is lifted as high as the thickness of the previous corrugated board. If the corrugated board is deformed it leaves a gap which the sensor believes is an empty plan. This causes the corrugated board to be lifted all the way to the emergency stop sensor, resulting in machine stops. The role of the metal sheet is to ensure that the corrugated board remain flat, which in turn will reduce the machine stops. When the machine picks up corrugated board, it sometimes gets double layer. This is because a vacuum is created between the corrugated boards. This leads to machine stops or after processing. The alternative lifting method should reduce these machine stops. With the two conceptual solutions, the company can decrease the numbers of stops with at least 75% per day.

    Fram tills idag har stor del av kullagers tillståndsövervakning skett genom att analysera vibrationer som ökar i takt med att kullager slits. Tillståndsövervakning av maskinella komponenter är en viktig del för att åstadkomma hög tillgänglighet i maskiner där underhåll kan planeras in först när komponenter är slitna men innan de går sönder. I insamlingen av vibrationsdata är risken stor för att omgivningens vibrationer följer med i insamlingen vilket ställer krav på filtreringsmetoder som är beroende av att känna till omgivningens vibrationer. Studier har visat på att övervakning av kullagers friktionsmoment kan tillhandahålla samma värde utan att kräva input från den externa miljön. Tidigare studier har huvudsakligen studerat kullagers friktionsmoment i testriggar vilketmedför att aktuella metoder inte är tillämpbara i kullagrets verkliga kontext. Syftet med studien var att åstadkomma en kullagerinfästning som möjliggör för tillståndsbaserat underhåll genom mätning av friktionsmoment. Forskningsfrågan som därför avsågs besvaras löd: Hur kan en infästning för kullager konstrueras för att möjliggöra friktionsmätning av kullager i sin tänkta kontext? Det första målet för studien var att åstadkomma en fungerande prototyp för mätning av friktionsmoment, och det andra målet var att identifiera testmetoder av felkällor och uppnå likvärdig prestanda gentemot liknande studier för mätning av vridmoment. 

    Studiens metod utgjorde sig av en litteraturgranskning som huvudsakligen undersökte trådtöjningsgivare(töjningssensor), optiska sensorer, lastceller, Wheatstonebryggor och felkällor, samt en fallstudie. Fallstudien utgjorde sig av fyra produktutvecklingsfaser: planering, konceptutveckling, utveckling på detaljnivå och testning och vidareutveckling. Baserat på planeringsfasens benchmarking av sensorer och litteraturgranskningen valde studien implementera trådtöjningsgivare i en lastcell som bestod av ett kullagernav med ekrar. (En trådtöjningsgivare kan liknas vid en klisterlapp med metalltrådar som mäter töjningar i en lastcell genom att resistansen i metalltrådarna förändras). I konceptutvecklingen upprättades kravspecifikationer och ett flertal olika lastceller utvärderades genom 3D-utskrivna modeller. Utvecklingen på detaljnivå bestod av beräkningar och simuleringar av diverse hållfasthetsaspekter samt simulering av vridmotstånd för att uppnå rätt upplösning och mätområde. Lastcellen har på uppdrag av fallföretaget dimensionerats mot att ge ett sensorutslag på 1mV vid ett vridmoment på 0,146 Nm. Angivet vridmoment motsvarar i det här fall det största vridmomentet som tvåfriska kullager bör uppvisa. I den här fasen undersöktes ekrar som bestod av tunna flänsar eller olika hålgeometrier där de tunna flänsar uppvisade störst töjningar. Den resulterande lastcellen bestod av tre eker-par med tunna flänsar och hade en simulerad känslighet på 6,85 mV/Nm. I testning och vidareutvecklingsfasenanpassades lastcellen för implementering till en av fallföretagets produkter. Konceptet simulerades mot egensvängningar, axiella krafter, radiella krafter och vibrationer samt testades fysiskt mot mätområde,upplösning, linjäritet, hysteres, repeterbarhet och drift. 

    Studien har resulterat i en lastcell med två trådtöjningsgivare i en halv Wheatstonebrygga som kan mäta kullagers friktionsmoment med en upplösning noggrannare än 0,001 Nm. Det primära mätområdet är 0 - 0,146 Nm och inom intervallet uppvisar lastcellen en känslighet på 7,8 mV/Nm, ett linjäritetsfel på 0,65%, en hysteres på 2,32% och ett repeterbarhetsfel på 1,12%, där den största felkällan ger upphov till ett fel på 0,0034 Nm. Jämfört med liknande studier har fallstudiens lastcell uppnått en väsentligt högre hysteres då den bästa erhöll en hysteres på 0,15%. Den största skillnaden gentemot liknande studier var att ekrarna i aktuell studie bestod av tunna flänsar med hög flexibilitet, medan liknande studier bestod av styvare ekrar med hålgeometrier. En styv eker kan i teorin uppvisa samma töjning som en tunn fläns förutsatt att hålgeometrin kan göras tillräckligt stor,alternativt att ekerns djup kan göras tillräckligt litet. På grund av tillverkningstekniska aspekter i fallstudien kunde inte hålgeometrins väggar göras tunnare än 0,7mm. Hålgeometriernas estimerade töjningarna bedömdes därför bli för låga vilket resulterade i att studien gick vidare med tunna flänsar. En av de huvudsakliga fördelarna med hålgeometrier var däremot att de uppvisade väsentligt lägre deformation givet samma töjning. Baserat på resultatet för fallstudien drogs slutsatsen att stora deformationer medför en större hysteres. Fenomenet kan förklaras genom att en flexibel eker har en större deformation att återhämta sig ifrån jämfört med en styv. (Hysteres kan beskrivas som kvarliggande deformation/spänningar efter en lastcykel). En av de huvudsakliga slutsatserna från studien var därför att en lastcell bör implementera fler trådtöjningsgivare för att öka känsligheten framför att öka känsligheten genom att öka töjningarna. Ytterligare en slutsats var att en lastcell avsedd för mätning av kullagers friktionsmoment endast lämpar sig för applikationer där externa laster inte överstiger kullagrets utmattningsgräns.

    Abstract [en]

    An increasing number of companies are focusing their efforts on project management. Project management is frequently used as an enabler for meeting an uncertain and turbulent environment. Consequently, the overall effectiveness of the project management process is essential for long-term profitability. The aim and final effects of project management are to predict the outcome, i.e. cost, time and quality. However, uncertainty is inherent in the objectives of the project itself, as we use assumptions and expectations in defining and realizing the outcome of the project. A project’s ability to identify and react to uncertainty will influence the outcome of the project. Presently, risk management processes exist in several forms and are often used to manage uncertainty. However, it is frequently argued in academia as well as for the practitioner that risk management does not live up to expected results.

    The overall objective of this research is to improve the process for managing risks and opportunities within a project organization. The research starts from the single project view, followed by the strategic link to business strategy by including the project portfolio management perspective. Finally, the research focuses on opportunities and the ability of a project to realize them. Thus, the research questions addressed concern how risk is conceived in a theoretical global context and how this would assist in developing a methodology for risk management in an international project organization. They also involve how risk management within a project portfolio could be conducted and its effectiveness measured. Finally, the research questions also address how the management of opportunities could be improved.

    This research includes the development of four methodologies, based on industrial need. A holistic approach with a systems perspective has been used in order to handle the complexity of the research task. Both empirical and theoretical material has been used for developing the proposed methodologies. The developed methodologies for project risk management and the measures of its effectiveness have been tested and improved over a five-year period within the complete case company. Subsequently, two of them were implemented.

    The developed methodologies show that the risk management process in a single project does not foster learning and is not directly applicable within a portfolio of projects. Furthermore, the risk management process is not able to address all types of uncertainty. The project manager is a major factor in an effective management of uncertainty. When identifying and managing opportunity, having the ability to create a holistic view, to oversee both customer expectations, and to communicate project related information are important factors. Furthermore, the implementation also showed that it is actually possible, through the consistent use of a risk management process, to develop a cultural behavior within an organization that is much more preventive and proactive than before.

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship of two significant concepts withinthe manufacturing industry. Namely, the widely popular Lean production and the arising Industry 4.0. The lack of a common framework concerning their relationship requires further exploration, as stated by several researchers. For companies to stay competitive within a changing market it is of importance to adapt to new technologies, indicating that the understanding of this relationship is essential, as Lean production is extensively used in industries today. To increase the understanding of the concepts and their relationship three research questions were formulated, as followed:

    RQ 1: How can Industry 4.0 support Lean production?

    RQ 2: How can Lean production support the implementation of industry 4.0?

    RQ 3: What are the challenges of implementing Industry 4.0 in Lean production?

    The study was conducted using qualitative research methods such as the narrative literature review and thematic analysis, allowing for the identification of themes and structuring of the study in a narrative approach. Second-hand data was collected through academic databases using search terms highly relevant to the research questions.

    The theoretical framework of the study provides a foundation for the understanding of the concepts. Whereas the results are centered around the relationship of Industry 4.0 and Lean production with themes relevant to the research questions and subthemes to follow. The analysis highlights important aspects of the results in relation to the theoretical framework, while also discovering insights connecting the research questions together.

    The conclusion presents aspects of how Industry 4.0 technologies can support Lean production through factors such as increased continuous improvement, support of people, improved JIT, Kanban, maintenance and communications. Where the general benefits will be productivity, quality and speed of introducing new products, adapting to high variability of market demand. Furthermore, describing how Lean production can support the implementation of Industry 4.0, as the degree of Lean maturity directly influences the efficiency of Industry 4.0 implementation. The employment of Lean principles such as continuous improvement, focus on people and standardization can result in a more effective implementation and utilization of Industry 4.0. Challenges of implementing Industry 4.0 in Lean production such as the risk of counterproductive implementation because of the lack of common framework, limitations of certain Lean practices, Lean professionals and ICT professionals limited knowledge of eachother's fields and the understanding of how to apply Industry 4.0 based on lean principles.

    Lastly, recommendations are offered for companies aspiring to implement Industry 4.0, as they should evaluate their current level of Lean maturity in order to understand when it is most efficient to incorporate the new technologies. Companies seeking to aid their Lean objectives should concentrate on technologies such as IoT and CPS as they seem to have the most positive impact on Lean. In addition, recommending further research regarding the relationship of Industry 4.0 readiness and Lean maturity, exploring which degree of Lean maturity to efficiently integrate and utilize certain Industry 4.0 technologies and when to implement certain Industry 4.0 technologies to aid the advancement of Lean maturity.

    Detta examensarbete utgör den sista delen av högskoleingenjörsutbildningen med inriktning mot innovation och produktdesign vid Mälardalens högskola i Eskilstuna. Examensarbetets omfattning är 15 svenska högskolepoäng.

     

    Projektet har genomförts på uppdrag av Scania AB, som är ett världsledande företag inom tillverkning av lastbilar och bussar. För att anpassa uppgiften till Scanias arbetssätt har alla deras grundvärden tagits i beaktning: kunden först, respekt för individen, eliminering av slöseri, beslutsamhet, laganda och integritet.

     

    Huvudsyftet med projektet var att få en inblick i och presentera det centrala temat - produktutveckling från idé till ett färdigt förslag på lösning. Denna produktutvecklingsprocess är ett nödvändigt steg inför tillverkningen av en prototyp.

     

    Uppgiften kom från Scanias transmissionsavdelning, och huvudmålet med den var att konstruera ett helt nytt mekaniskt lyftredskap som skulle anpassas till ett antal olika krav och önskemål. Syftet var att Scanias operatörer på transmissionsavdelningen skulle kunna använda lyftverktyget när de utför sitt dagliga jobb vid testmaskinen. Förväntningarna på lyftredskapet var att det skulle tillfredsställa kundbehoven, vara optimalt, lätthanterligt samt säkert vid användning.

     

    Fokus i den här rapporten ligger på att visa utvecklingsprocessen, från idé till den färdiga produkten som ett sista steg innan prototyptillverkningen. Frågeställningar som behandlats i den här rapporten är:

     

    -        Hur projektet planerats

    -        Hur analyser har utförts och hur framtagningen av kravspecifikationer har gått till

    -        Hur det säkerställts att rätt koncept valts

    -        Hur säkerställningen av lyftverktyget gått till

     

    I ett försök att summera alla arbetsinsatser i det här projektet blev resultatet ett konstruktionsunderlag i form av CAD-ritningar av olika komponenter, hållfasthetsanalyser samt riskbedömningar som bekräftar att lyftredskapet kan användas i framtiden.

    Behandlingsassistenter och lärare på Lövsta skolhem, ett behandlingshem för ungdomar mellan 12-21 år, har i nuläget svårigheter att enas om hur skolgången ska bedrivas och finna en bra samarbetsform för skolundervisningen.

    Syftet med studien är att belysa den framväxande organisationsutvecklingen på Lövsta skolhem och utveckla konkreta förslag för behandlingsassistenter och lärare att finna samarbetsformer och en gemensam målbild för de omhändertagna ungdomarnas skolgång.

    Metoden är av kvalitativ karaktär vilket gjort det möjligt att i studien undersöka kontexten i organisationen och skapa en helhetsuppfattning.

    Förslagen som presenteras för behandlings- och skolverksamheten är följande; struktur och kontinuerlighet i KNESS- mötena, enhetliga riktlinjer i arbetsutförandet, att medarbetarna följer de angivna rutinerna och att den ledande funktionen lyssnar och tar aktiv del av deras samlade kunskaper och idéer.

    ABSTRACT

    Introduction and purpose

    Development of a VSM tool has been done by performing experimental field work at ABB Robotics, a company that mass produces industrial robots and associated accessories. The tool development, the primary part of the project, mainly puts focus on production aspects. Furthermore, it has been centered on plant layouts of the product layout kind (production line).

    The purpose of the development is to create a tailored VSM tool that auto generates a foundation for value stream maps based on calculations and possibly simple simulation. The purpose is broken down into two questions where concrete problems can be illustrated:

    A) How should the VSM tool plainly signal capacity vs. demand, time balances in production and the ratio between value and non-value adding aspects as well as intuitively promote knowledge and in a simple and fast manner be applicable to different kinds of production lines?

    B) Which constraints are placed on the potential of the VSM tool due to the current situation of the company, how does this contradict the main principles of VSM and how can the company work to maximize the tool´s potential in the future?

    Methodology and knowledge

    The development which is characterized by continuous counseling and feedback with the internal mentor is mainly based on laboratory work in Excel. In addition, the work has also involved the making of a user guide as well as an adjustable function for indicating production effects with colors. An evaluation of the tool and the user guide has also been made, which mainly is supported by a test run with the internal mentor and the nature of the methodology.

    The knowledge that the development uses as its footing mainly involves process- and value stream maps from the company, discussions with company personnel, self-performed laboratory work and theory from Rother and Shooks book “Lära sig se” (2005) and Drew. A. Locher´s book “Value Stream Mapping for Lean Development” (2008).

    Results

    The VSM tool manages, in a relevant way, to factor in all aspects that can be interpreted using a typical value stream map. In addition it also provides the following: balances between workstations and production lines, suggestions for amount of WIP between these, simple simulation of WIP between these, disturbance aspects, three total times; manufacturing lead time, inventory time and value adding time as well as a graphic illustration over production courses. The results are considered to fulfill the purpose of the project.

    Conclusion and future meaning

    The development results in a hybrid solution of sorts, a tool that exists somewhere in-between the typical draw-by-hand VSM work and simulation software. Its advantage is that it combines VSM theory with intuitive, swift and practical usage, which goes well in hand with today´s fluctuating conditions where time pressure of different kinds are present. The drawback is that the concept as a whole requires complementing in the form of Lean knowledge and gemba observations. Furthermore, there are implications associated with some types of parallel production and editing of the tool, which is to be addressed before implementation. In order to fully utilize the tool, the company also has to examine production times and make a minor adjustment to the process of collecting disturbance data. Three suggestions for the future are given; to study availability, transport aspects and the measuring of production times.

    Abstract [en]

    The gas turbine was one of the most important technological developments of the early 20th century, and it has had a significant impact on our lives. Although some researchers have worked on predicting the performance of three-shaft gas turbines, the effects of the deteriorated components on other primary components and of the physical faults on the component measurement parameters when considering the variable inlet guide valve scheduling and secondary air system for three-shaft gas turbine engines have remained unexplored. In this paper, design point and off-design performance models for a three-shaft gas turbine were developed and validated using the GasTurb 13 commercial software. Since the input data were limited, some engineering judgment and optimization processes were applied. Later, the developed models were validated using the engine manufacturer's data. Right after the validation, using the component health parameters, the physical faults were implanted into the non-linear steady-state model to investigate the performance of the gas turbine during deterioration conditions. The effects of common faults, namely fouling and erosion in primary components of the case study engine, were simulated during full-load operation. The fault simulation results demonstrated that as the severity of the fault increases, the component performance parameters and measurement parameters deviated linearly from the clean state. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the measurement parameters to the fault location and type were discussed, and as a result they can be used to determine the location and kind of fault during the development of a diagnosis model.

The report concludes that the existence in practice of theoretically important aspects are diverse and that the most appropriate way of governing the aspects are through the creation of a performance management process.

    The theoretical chapter is established for dual purposes. The first is to give the reader a comprehensive understanding of what has been done in the field of performance measurement and management so far and the second is to answer the first research question imposed.

    The empirical chapter investigates to what degree the existence of factors singled out in theory are present in practice. Further, the chapter also answers research question two.

    Finally the result and analysis chapters focuses on cross-analysing the case studies made and generate a recommendation. Research question three is answered under these headings.

    It is generally accepted by academics and practitioners alike that production performancemeasures ought to be derived from the strategy of a company. However, unlike the context that measurement systems operate in, they appear to be static. Hence, companies often fail to continuously reflect the dynamic business environment and their new priorities in their performance measurement systems. In the rapidly changing environment of today the development, implementation and use of adequate performance measurement frameworks are some of the major challenges confronting organisations and are also significant success factors. The purpose of this paper is to present key contributing factors in creating dynamic abilities in a production performance measurement system. The factors are derived by a literature study, a case and by contrasting the case to the literature. The case presented is a participatory study that stretches over 10 months and follows a project leader with the task of re-designing and implementing a support structure for a production performance measurement system. Following the introduction, the paper is divided into three sections: the literature review, the case study presentation and finally a discussion regarding what factors amplify and inhibit the dynamics in the support structure of a performance measurement system.     Abstract

    Purpose – The purpose of this study is to develop and validate a work-process for formulation of maintenance strategies within manufacturing industry.

    Design/methodology/approach – Literature studies and an industrial case study are combined to develop the proposed work-process.

    Findings – A process for formulation of maintenance strategies is proposed. The process is developed through a combination of previous research results, and a case study, in which three industrial organizations, participating in collaboration with researchers, have formulated maintenance strategies for their companies.

    Practical implications – Formulated maintenance strategies are the very foundation for maintenance excellence. However, many manufacturing companies lack maintenance strategies, partly due to lack of competence in how to formulate functional strategies. This paper gives example of how such maintenance strategies may be formulated requiring a low level of resource.

    Originality/value – The paper presents a work-process for formulation of maintenance strategies. The formulation process is easy to use and does not demand any larger amount of resources. Hence, it should be possible to use also at smaller companies who lack both manpower and specialist competence in maintenance strategies.

    In industry, there is a constant demand for increased productivity in order to stay competitive. Still, Swedish industry has an average utilization of about 60% in its production systems. One important factor for increasing the equipment utilization is effective maintenance of production assets.

    Within process industry a strategic view on maintenance activities is common and most companies regard maintenance as a profit centre. Meanwhile, the discrete units manufacturing industry still in many cases view maintenance as a cost driver. However, with the spread of Toyota-inspired production concepts, the manufacturing industry is beginning to view maintenance as a strategic asset. Still, though, many companies have no formulated maintenance strategy.

    The main purpose of the research, presented in this thesis, has been to develop a work-process for formulation of effective maintenance strategies for enterprises in the manufacturing industry.

    Through one descriptive and two prescriptive case studies a work-process for formulation of maintenance strategies has been developed. The descriptive study revealed some of the differences between companies with and without maintenance strategies. It also showed how some companies view the strategic contributions of maintenance. The first prescriptive study showed how stakeholder involvement may contribute to the identification of relevant performance measures for the maintenance activities. Stakeholder involvement also contributes to the organizational acceptance of the maintenance strategy. Last, the second prescriptive case study led to the development of a work-process for formulation of maintenance strategies. The work-process was tested and verified in three companies, handling different challenges for their maintenance activities. All three companies intend to use the formulated maintenance strategy as a road map for the development of their production maintenance.

    In order to keep production in Sweden the industry has to stay competitive on a global market. This fact increases the demand of high utilisation of automated production equipment. However, research has indicated that the average utilisation of production equipment in Sweden is about 60%. One key factor for increasing the utilisation is effective maintenance of the production equipment. Still, within the manufacturing industry, maintenance is often regarded as a cost driving necessity rather than a competitive resource. In a survey, published 2004, about 70 % of the respondents consider maintenance a pure cost centre. The same survey also revealed that 28 % of the respondents have no maintenance strategy or policy at all. The aim of this paper is to discuss the role of maintenance strategies as a means of making maintenance contribute to competitiveness. The paper is based on a theoretical overview and a case study in which six companies have been studied regarding the perceived quality of their maintenance, the challenges they face, and their view on the strategic impact of production maintenance. In the case study, four companies, which are dissatisfied with their current maintenance, are compared with two reference companies, well reputed for their maintenance excellence. The findings indicate that a strategic view of maintenance is essential for achieving the desired level of maintenance performance. This strategic view has to be held, not only by the production and maintenance management, but by the company management group. While the two reference companies have well formulated maintenance strategies, including aligned measures, acting as roadmaps for their continuous improvement of their maintenance, the four studied companies lack both strategic goals and relevant measures for their maintenance activities. The reasons for this are individual for each company but they share an insight that they need to develop their maintenance in order to stay competitive in their business areas.

However, with the automotive industry as a driving force, the manufacturing industry is beginning to view maintenance as a strategic asset. Still, though, many companies have no formulated maintenance strategy. The aim of this paper is to exemplify what factors manufacturing companies consider important when formulating their maintenance strategies. As a base for this, a case study has been performed in which interviews have been conducted in six companies to find out what factors they consider to be of strategic importance for their maintenance. The results from the interviews are then analyzed and discussed in the light of some previously presented studies on the topic of maintenance strategies. The findings of the study indicate that some factors, e.g., financial considerations and spare parts handling are common for the studied companies, while others, e.g., workforce and technological level are company specific. The company specific factors may depend on contextual factors such as branch and/or company size. But which factors the companies regard as strategically important seems to depend also on the managers’ knowledge in maintenance management and maintenance technology.

    Today, many manufacturing companies have chosen to outsource the maintenance function, often as part of a cost reduction program. The result of the outsourcing has been successful in some cases and unsatisfactory in others. In order to make a sound sourcing decision the company needs to be fully aware of the strategic importance of the maintenance activities. Such awareness will also have an impact on the result of the chosen sourcing strategy. To assess the strategic impact of maintenance, it is essential to find relevant measurements in order to evaluate the performance and quality, as well as the profitability of the investments that maintenance activities are supposed to be. In order to be relevant, the measurements should be well aligned with the company’s vision and mission for the maintenance, which in turn should be supporting the company’s over-all business strategy.

     

    The objective with this paper is to discuss and exemplify the importance of assessing the strategic impact of the production maintenance when evaluating maintenance related sourcing decisions.  Together with a theoretical overview, this paper will present a case study performed at three companies with different sourcing solutions.

     

    The findings of the study indicate a relationship between the alignment of the over-all company strategy, the used maintenance performance measurements, and the perceived contribution of maintenance for fulfilling the competitiveness of the company. Regardless of how companies choose to source its maintenance it is obvious that a strategic view of the maintenance function will support the sourcing process by setting relevant measurements and target values for the expected performance and development of the maintenance function. One way of achieving this might be to use a model for alignment of maintenance performance indicators and business strategy.

    Abstract [en]

    Optimum maintenance may be expressed as: “to achieve the agreed plant operating pattern, availability and product quality within the accepted plant condition (for longevity) and safety standards, and at minimum resource cost.” But in order to achieve this, the use of performance indicators is necessary in order to evaluate both the efficiency and the effectiveness of the maintenance activities. There are numerous measures to be used for this and not always easy to select which ones to use. Several authors have expressed the need for alignment with the main organizational goals, and also the need for stakeholder involvement when identifying feasible measures. In this paper a case study is presented, in which an attempt to identify suitable maintenance performance indicators through stakeholder involvement has been performed. Except for the maintenance department, external customer, that is, the production department has been involved in expressing their expectations on the use of maintenance performance indicators. The result from the investigation, together with the expressed vision and mission of the maintenance and production department, has formed a solid foundation for establishing a feasible set of maintenance performance indicators.

    Openness, broad involvement and inclusion of different perspectives are considered a useful strategy for successful innovation. We suggest this is valid also for foresight practice as a part of an innovation process. In this paper, collaborative signal scanning regarding sustainability, act as the foundation for an intervention in an interactive research study discussing how to distribute and improve foresight practice, based on broad involvement for sustainable innovation? This research was performed as a university industry collaboration. The intervention consisted of two parts: moderated networking meetings with the purpose of sharing and reflecting on weak signals about sustainability and access to a learning module consisting of practical and theoretical material on corporate foresight, accessible via a digital learning platform. Participants express new insights, changed habits both in private and professional situations, and a strong incentive to pursue this work. The lack of time is a hinder for the individuals.

    This study focuses on the tense appropriability-openness relationship, defined by some as paradox. Based on an international survey of 415 manufacturing firms, we investigate how the use of different kinds of intellectual property protection mechanisms (IPPMs) affects interfirm R&D collaboration while considering partner location in the analysis as well. Our results show that the use of formal, semi-formal or informal IPPMs has different effects on openness in terms of partner variety and depth of collaboration with academic partners, value chain partners and competitors. Moreover, when considering location we uncover previously hidden appropriability-openness liaisons showing that semi-formal or informal IPPMs are mainly valid in relation to national partners, whereas formal appropriability explains international collaborations. One implication of the study is that to better understand the appropriability-openness relationship it is imperative to differentiate between national and international settings. We further suggest that the potential paradox delineating this relationship has a geographical dimension.

    There is to date abundant evidence about the way openness-performance liaisons are shaped, yet parallel streams of research point towards an intricate relationship between appropriability and openness. Accordingly, while openness may reveal ample opportunities, risks of e.g. misappropriation should also be accounted for in open innovation processes, as they might affect performance. Recent research highlights the scarcity of studies investigating openness, appropriability and performance, and suggests a further need to analyze this in different stages of the innovation process. This study therefore aims to investigate the effects of three groups of intellectual property protection mechanisms (formal, semi-formal and informal) and openness (in terms of collaboration depth with eight types of partners) on two types of innovation performance (efficiency and novelty) across innovation phases. The analysis is based on a sample of 340 manufacturing firms from three European countries. Findings show that in early stages of the innovation process, efficiency is positively linked to the use of semi-formal appropriability mechanisms, such as contracts, yet negatively related to the use of formal ones, such as patents. The latter potentially illustrates the high uncertainty and increased risks of imitation or misappropriation in early innovation phases. Informal appropriability mechanisms contribute to novelty in earlier as well as later stages. Results further indicate novelty is explained by university collaboration throughout the innovation process, while competitor collaboration positively associates with novelty in later innovation stages. Vertical collaborations with supplier and customers reveal contrasting effects, which could also have implications linked to imitation risks. Furthermore, the negative effects of formal appropriability mechanisms and supplier collaboration on innovation performance in distinct stages of the innovation process might have implications for the so-called paradox of disclosure.

    I denna rapport avhandlas formgivningen och produktutvecklingen av ett klackskydd som tillåter användaren att gå i högklackade skor både inomhus och utomhus utan att skada klacken och underlaget som den går på.Arbetet är ett examensarbete på Mälardalens Högskola på 15 hp på kandidatnivå inom Produktdesign – Formgivning. Den var planerad att utföras under 10 veckor på heltid under våren 2012 men avslutades istället hösten samma år.Examensarbetet ska resultera i ett koncept som uppfyller direktiven som angivits i uppstarten som efterhand vidareutvecklats till konkreta krav. Arbetet bakom konceptet ska presenteras muntligt samt redovisas skriftligt i form av denna rapport. Utöver det har en prototyp tagits fram för att förmedla en känsla för storleken och semiotiken den utstrålar.Arbetsgången har varit att genom en förundersökning om marknaden globalt sett förstå hur problemet har lösts i andra länder. Undersökningarna har både varit utförda på egen hand och genom att utnyttja företag och myndigheter som vill främja idébärares väg mot företagande.Metoderna som använts är främst verktyg inom produkt- och processutveckling. För att definiera problemet har Funktionsanalys, QFD och Kravspecifikation ställts upp.För idé- och konceptgenerering lades stor vikt på att främja kreativiteten med hjälp av andra aktörer för att erhålla en bredare förslagsbas än vad en person kan generera.Praktiska tester har gjorts för att testa och bekräfta påståenden. De har bedömts i Pugh’s matris och olika DF-verktyg.Resultatet blev ett klackskydd som kan ses som en förbättring av en befintlig produkt.

    Abstract [en]

    Volvo Construction Equipment’s driveline development department initiated this thesis work. It was calculated for two students working for 20 week period of time, which equals 30 hp each. The reason for Volvo CE to start the cooperation was the large number of variance of companion flanges and propeller shafts generating additional work for several departments within Volvo.

    The problem statement consisted of questions, which should result in information about the number of variants and combinations of propeller shafts and companion flanges used; the reason for the quantity of variants and what factors are affecting the choice of propeller shafts and companion flanges. They should also give answers to how article reduction can be implemented and what recommendations can be given to Volvo for the future.

    Using a Gantt chart as a planning tool helped the working process to progress in a structured way. Different methods of data collection were done to secure the problem understanding. Tools such as a literature review, function diagrams, and interviews were used to complete the data collection. Co-workers from the purchasing department and the part number reduction team were interviewed. Besides the in-house contact an opportunity was given to interview the suppliers during visits at their factories.

    Computer software was used as a resource of confirming information and mapping currently used components. The mapping process resulted in interesting findings, which were further researched. Together with the information from the interviews, reasons for the variety of used components were clarified. To deepen the problem understanding a more detailed variation mapping was made, showing what driveline components were generating most variants of companion flanges.

    The findings made and the recommendations received from the suppliers were unitized in a best case scenario. The questions from the problem statement were analyzed and answered. The recommendations given regarding to Volvo Construction Equipment’s propeller shaft program included guidelines for modularization. The success of modularization is based on among other factors, on particular documentation, continuous communication and close cooperation with the suppliers. This report can be defined as the first step towards a modularized propeller shaft program for Volvo CE’s haulers and wheel loaders.

    The role of the manufacturing units has a big impact on a company’s business. If competitive priorities and the production weapons can be merged together and describe a factory profile, it can be a factor that provides the competitive advantages for the company. This thesis has two objectives in this area, the industrial and the academic.

    The industrial objective will investigate how we can visualize and describe a manufacturing structure and make the desired positioning. The manufacturing footprint structure will be set up according to the performance objectives Innovation, Flexibility, Lead-time and Efficiency representing the product life cycle that also support decisions for the make or buy process. The result is a model that describes the manufacturing structure and a conflict area, or a “Black Hole”, is indentified and is leading to the academic research questions; why most of the manufacturing units are positioned in the conflict area and how to leave the “Black Hole”? The intersection in the views of positioning, knowledge and the network paradox are analysed and a scaled model connected to Dreyfus knowledge model, brings some understanding to the positioning problem.

    A process model is proposed for the characteristic profiles of the concept factories and how to move to the desired positions. This concept can be applied on a group of manufacturing units and handle the trade off dilemmas for the separate units by letting a group of units achieve top performance for all the performance objectives. The visualization and relation to the products life cycle can contribute to communication and developing the manufacturing footprint strategy. The model has been tested, in a positioning context for strategic purchasing with experience of supplier quality audits for positioning suppliers, with positive result.

    Further research of top performance factories would be interesting to do in order to find out their 8M profiles and identify more trade off dilemmas, connecting them to the different performance objectives in order to support the development in moving to different desired directions.

    This paper seeks to identify the contributions of artificial intelligence (AI) to supply chain management (SCM) through a systematic review of the existing literature. To address the current scientific gap of AI in SCM, this study aimed to determine the current and potential AI techniques that can enhance both the study and practice of SCM. Gaps in the literature that need to be addressed through scientific research were also identified. More specifically, the following four aspects were covered: (1) the most prevalent AI techniques in SCM; (2) the potential AI techniques for employment in SCM; (3) the current AI-improved SCM subfields; and (4) the subfields that have high potential to be enhanced by AI. A specific set of inclusion and exclusion criteria are used to identify and examine papers from four SCM fields: logistics, marketing, supply chain and production. This paper provides insights through systematic analysis and synthesis.

    Processing capacity distribution has become widespread in the fog computing era. End-user services have multiplied, from consumer products to Industry 5.0. In this scenario, the services must have a very high-reliability level. But in a system with such displacement of hardware, the reliability of the service necessarily passes through the hardware design. Devices shall have a high quality, but they shall also efficiently support fault management. Hardware design must take into account all fault management functions and participate in creating a fault management policy to ensure that the ultimate goal of fault management is fulfilled, namely to increase a system's reliability. Efficiently and sustainably, both in the system's performance and the product's cost. This paper analyzes the hardware design techniques that efficiently contribute to the realization of fault management and, consequently, guarantee a high level of reliability and availability for the services offered to the end customer. We describe hardware requirements and how they affect the choice of devices in the hardware design of networking systems.

    Wipro Infrastructure Engineering i Östersund, tillverkare av hydraulcylindrar, vill anpassa tillverkningen av två högvolymsprodukter i det manuella produktionsflödet genom resurssnålare tillverkning för att möta det nya kundkravet om en ledtid på 48 timmar mot tidigare ledtid på 10 arbetsdagar.

    Produktionen av hydraulcylindrarna Reach och Sideshift kan delas in i en sekvens om fyra processteg; maskinbearbetning av cylinderrör och kolvstång, svetsning, montering och slutligen lackering och packning.

    Värdeflödeskartor över det nuvarande tillståndet för hydraulcylindrarna Reach och Sideshift visade att den värdeskapande tiden i processerna stod för 2,1 % och 1,6 % av ledtiden för Reach respektive Sideshift. Genom observationer identifierades slöserier främst i lager och väntan.  Aktiviteter som inte tillför värde men som är nödvändiga identifierades främst i materialförsörjningen av tillsatsmaterial till processerna. Arbetsinnehållet och arbetsmängden till respektive process styrs genom produktionsberedning i ett MPS-system. Varje process arbetar individuellt utan hänsyn till behovet i nästa process. Detta medför att produktionsprocesserna upplevs som isolerade öar som trycker fram material genom hela tillverkningen.

    Med värdeflödeskartor av nuvarande tillstånd som grund och med Lean-metodik som angreppsätt, skapades värdeflödeskartor som visar på ett önskat framtida tillstånd. Ett flertal förbättringsåtgärder genomfördes i syfte att reducera upptäckta icke-värdeskapande aktiviteter i material- och informationsflödet. Flera produktionsprocesser kopplades samman för att bilda en produktionscell. En supermarket för bearbetade cylinderrör och kolvstänger som stödjer FIFU infördes. Kanbanstyrning av tillsatsmaterial implementerades. En kanban-tavla sattes upp för att förenkla informationsflödet och ett kontrollerat lager av färdiga produkter infördes.

    Resultaten av förbättringsåtgärderna visar på en minskning av ledtiden genom hela värdeflödet med 50 % för båda produkterna till 4,1 dagar. Andelen värdeskapande aktiviteter ökade med 43 % och 69 % för Reach respektive Sideshift. Seriestorlekarna minskade med 65 % och tiden från start av order i produktionscellen till färdig produkt tar endast 20 timmar.

    Slutsatserna från resultatet visar på att ett resurssnålt, förbrukningsstyrt och sammanlänkat värdeflöde går att uppnå med hjälp av metoder och verktyg inom Lean. Ett väsentligt steg i ledtidsreduktion har uppnåtts och författarens åsikt är att företaget genom fortsatt arbete med Lean kan nå en ledtid på 48 timmar.

    Abstract [en]

    The Swedish aluminum producer Kubikenborg aluminum AB has during its production had interference on a machine which function is to squeeze out 4 pieces of sleeves from a hanger with a total of 4 pieces of legislation with a cap on each pin. Problems have resulted in stoppages for the company, which is both expensive and time consuming. Our work has therefore been focused at looking for the causes of this decline. During the first period of the thesis we focused on the measurements of the reliability on the machine, to get an idea of the number of non-response. The later part of the thesis work, has been focused on identifying the various causes of problems, that has resulted in the disruptions in the production.

    Abstract [en]

    The paper is based on a multiple-case study of conditions for product-based innovations. Key actors from 18 cases were interviewed concerning the specific character of the innovation process, its parts and phases, with a focus on the realization phase. The cases are analyzed and discussed on the basis of an experience-based framework with seven specific components. In addition, the data are illustrated and discussed by more general themes of successful and unsuccessful innovation processes. It is concluded that the components of the used framework are necessary but individually not sufficient to maintain a continuous friction-free innovation process. The dynamics of the innovation processes are well illustrated by the framework.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose Although prior research provides evidence that production ramp-up is often disrupted by supplier-related problems, it fails to discuss how the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and various types of suppliers integrate their functions and operations to secure preparations for production ramp-up. The purpose of this paper is to investigate OEM-supplier integration in a new product development (NPD) project to prepare for production ramp-up. Design/methodology/approach The results presented in this paper are based on a real-time, longitudinal study of a single collaborative NPD project in the mechanical engineering industry. The NPD project involves seven suppliers and it is carried out in a large Swedish company (the OEM) and fits the theory-elaborating approach of this research. Findings This study argues that the aspect of timing in OEM-supplier integration, the OEM's research and development (R&D) attitude toward collaboration and the OEM's (R&D) operating procedure are challenges affecting the preparation for production ramp-up. The following three mechanisms to facilitate OEM-supplier integration in order to prepare for production ramp-up are also discussed: the mediator's role, the OEM's face-to-face meeting at the project level and suppliers' formal face-to-face meetings with the OEM and internally. Originality/value This paper elaborates on and extends prior research on production ramp-up by conducting an empirical analysis that incorporates supplier integration in NPD. It bridges the gap between the literature on production ramp-up and on supplier integration in NPD and clearly indicates that supplier integration is an important prerequisite for successful production ramp-up.
