"Man anmäler sin oro, inte en person": En kvalitativ vinjettstudie om skolkuratorers bedömningar av och samverkan kring barn som far illa2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Hård elektronisk musik: En etnografisk studie om deltagandet i den Svenska Hardstyle-scenen2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this ethnographic study is to describe and understand what participation in Hardstyle parties in Sweden means and what importance the participation has for those who participate. The central issue of the study is based on the importance of participants attributing their participation in the Hardstyle party/culture. The result also deals with a stigma perspective that outsiders have about the partaking in the party culture, where participation is deteriorated and identified in different ways. Participation in the Hardstyle culture has some kind of life-changing influenza, where community and solidarity grew strong from the group's diversity. The hardstyle participation is analyzed from an emotional sociological perspective where concepts such as interaction rituals, emotional energy, gemeinschaft, gesellschaft and culture are key inspirators.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

EU-citizens who are coming to Sweden to beg is a current topic. The purpose of the study was to investigate the actions offered by the municipality and non-profit organizations to help these people. A qualitative approach was chosen and altogether five interviews were carried out, three with municipal representatives and two with different non-profit organizations. The result showed that there is a number of different actions and many of these are based on collaboration with the two parties. All informants were of the opinion that the implementation worked well but that there were clear limitations. The limitations included lack of knowledge about the current group and language difficulties. The results also showed that the most common merits was that the vulnerable EU-citizens were treated as people and that they got food and a roof over their heads. The results were analysed by previous research, Maslow's hierarchy of needs and Antonovsky’s sense of coherence. One of the study’s conclusions was that further knowledge about vulnerable EU-citizens who begs is necessary.

C-uppsats inlagd av Peter andersson: Hur upplevs påtvingad behandling?2009Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract:

Behandlingshemmet lyder under SIS (Statens institutionsstyrelse).

Schymans feminister: En kritisk diskursanalys i hur media framställer Feministiskt initiativ2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Pappaledigheten -2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Studies show that children's participation in social services inquiries are flawed (Inspektionen för vård och omsorg, 2014). Children's views are described as a low priority compared to adults (Östberg, 2010). The aim of this study was therefore to examine how social workers perceive children's participation in inquiries where children are suspected of being victims of domestic violence. The study has been conducted with a qualitative approach in the form of focus group interviews with social workers. Participation models and theory of professions based on the concepts of jurisdiction and discretion has been applied in the analysis of empirical data. The result shows that there is a consistency in how the informants define children's participation but that it has a complex meaning in practice. The informants describe that methods can facilitate children's participation. However, it also appears that there are obstacles such as the children’s age, parent’s involvement, high workload and lack of time. Furthermore, the study shows that social workers perceive children as active participants in inquiries. However, the protection aspect is emphasized as a main factor for children's participation. This study thus highlights that there are both obstacles and opportunities in the practical work regarding children's participation.

Gemensam syn på socialt ansvar - en faktor att beakta vid rekrytering: En diskursanalys om Corporate Social Responsibility2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Through qualitative telephone interviews, individuals' experiences of workplace-related bullying in human-care professions have been investigated in this study. Theories of recognition and stigma have been used as interpretative tools in the analyzes. The experiences of bullying have been spread, but some experiences are shared by informants. Some of the informants stated that the bullying was hidden and the perpetrators wanted to make them look stupid by hiding information. Many of the informants stated that the boss was included in the bullying. The results of the study indicate that bullying has given the participants serious consequences. Mobbing could lead to mental and physical consequences such as anxiety, stomach pain, stress, numbness and sleep discomfort, in addition, the majority of informants were called in sick because of the bullying they were subjected to. The interviews ended in a positive spirit, as most stated that they are doing well today, although some of them are still affected by what has happened to them. The conclusions that can be drawn are that bullying occurred both subtle and direct. The bullying affected individuals physically and mentally. Seven of eight informants were called in sick as a consequence, however, the majority of informants now feel fine.

    Abstract [sv]

Gideonsbergs IF (damer) och Västerås SK (herrar).

Livet som missbrukare- före detta missbrukande kvinnor berättar.2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Gender regimes, citizen participation and rural restructuring2008Collection (editor) (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

This book aims to unravel how rural gender regimes are constituted, enforced, made sense of and resisted, and ho struggles of resistance lead to empowerment and change in various countries in the four corners of Europe as well s Australia and India. The book focuses on the intricate relationship between laws and institutions and everyday life. It analyzes on the one hand how laws and institutions are constituted and on the other hand how gender regimes are built at the local rural level, sometimes in compliance with these frames and sometimes contesting them, The articles, in diverse ways, give voice both to women’s struggles for recognition and men’s voices in gendered rural societies. Through applying the concept of the welfare state and gender regimes within rural research, this book contributes to the further development of a comparative theoretical framework for rural gender studies. The importance of integrating rural gender studies into both the mainstreams of rural and feminist research has been emphasized in previous research, as has that of developing comparative analytical frameworks. The conceptual framework adopted in this volume wets out to meet this challenge by approaching rural gender relations and the meeting point of two core research areas: gender regimes and rural transformative processes. Research into gender regimes offers a promising analytical framework for comparing gender relations in diverse rural settings. At the same time, by addressing rural concerns deriving from the specificity of rural transition processes and gender regimes, the approach also contributes to an elucidation of the complexity of citizenship.

Poverty and Governance: Rural Municipal Strategies Facing Ethnic and Social Marginalisation and Long-Term Unemployment in Hungary2016In: The Uppsala Yearbook of Eurasian Studies / [ed] Kaj Hobér, London: Wildy, Simmonds & Hill Publishing , 2016, 1, p. 183-211Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper is to scrutinise the way that public work [közfoglalkoztatás] is adapted and utilised, as a national tool for the reintegration of the long-term unemployed into the world of labour in Hungary in a rural municipality characterised by highly ethnified unemployment. Public work as a workfare strategy to counteract welfare dependency of long-term unemployed was first formulated in 1996. Municipalities became obliged to organise public work from 2000. Meanwhile, it became a central tool for counteracting unemployment from 2009 as part of the “Way to work” [Ùt a munkához] strategy of the Socialist-Liberal coalition. The conservative government renamed this strategy as START, reducing eligibilities attached to it several times between 2011 and 2015.[1] Public work as a strategy to overcome long-term unemployment was subjected to extensive and varied criticism[2] describing public work as a “cul de sac”, rather than leading out of exclusion from the labour market, and was accused of being non-voluntary and having punitive features.[3]Studies indicate that the rate of return to the labour market even decreased in villages utilising extensive public work programmes

The Role of Public Private Partnership in the Governance of Racialised Poverty in a Marginalised Rural Municipality in Hungary2019In: Sociologia Ruralis, ISSN 0038-0199, E-ISSN 1467-9523, Vol. 59, no 3, p. 494-516Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores the local governance of poverty alleviation in a marginalised Hungarian rural community, with over 50 per cent Roma inhabitants, most of whom were either unemployed or participated in public work projects. Kisbalog is among those marginalised rural communities which are characterised by increasing social polarisation and ethnic cleavages as a result of selective outmigration and a municipal leadership which negotiates access to public work along racialised notions of deservingness. Hungary follows the EU concept of public private partnerships for local governance. This article unravels the room for manoeuvre for NGOs working for poverty alleviation in the context of the racialised narratives of a paternalistic local welfare state. Utilising Young's notions of social justice it explores the complicit nature of recognitional, associative and distributional justice in order to understand the interplay in partnerships between public and private agencies. From among three types of strategies, coercive, isolated and deliberative, the last one has the potential to bring about transformative changes.

Gendering Postsocialism: Old Legacies New Hierarchies2018Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

When the Berlin Wall fell in November 1989 and when, two years later, the Soviet Union crumbled and was divided into 15 independent states, the huge space formerly called the Communist Bloc or the countries of state socialism seemed to disappear forever, and an unprecedented process of change began. This process was just as unique from a historical perspective as the earlier attempts to build communism and/or state socialism. The changes had different speeds and directions, and while some states embraced the process of democratisation in order to “return to Europe”, others were experimenting with the ideals of a strong authoritarian state, religion, and a “return to tradition” to build a new society.

Now, however, nearly 30 years later, the different countries of this huge geographical space often continue to be addressed according to their common past, or as countries still in a state of transition or transformation from their previous condition – as postsocialist. In some cases the communist past seems to have been totally overcome, and these countries are recognized as European and democratic states with well-functioning market economies (as in the case of many countries that have joined the European Union). However, their position in the formerly socialist space can suddenly be remembered in exceptional circumstances, like during the refugee crisis of 2015 (Dalakoglou, 2016). In other cases, the changes do not seem to be thorough due to the emergence of authoritarian regimes and corruption. Thus, the states that have experienced slower changes are more frequently referred to through their past as “formerly” or “post” socialist.

In deference to these temporal interpretations, following Madina Tlostanova, we approach postsocialism not only in temporal terms, but also in spatial terms – as a space populated by millions of people whose experience is “underconceptualized” in the analysis of globalisation (Tlostanova, 2017, pp. 1-3). In choosing to analyse postsocialism as a “critical standpoint” in order to avoid the essencialisation of the region (Stella, 2015, p.133), we consider it important to explore gendered changes focusing on institutions, discourses, memories, identities, and fantasies that in one way or another connect to this postsocialist condition.

Although taking place in varied shapes and degrees, the dismantlement of state socialism and the emergence of “capitalism” in the former state socialist countries led to radical shifts in their economies as well as in the welfare state’s involvement in social citizenship. Gender relations were a key arena for the moulding of state-socialist citizenship where institutions, guarding women’s reproductive rights as well as their work opportunities, were raised to create the ideal socialist citizen. Gender norms and gender relations have also been a prime field for forming the postsocialist citizen. While we assume that the bondage between economic regimes and gender norms is not deterministic (Asztalos Morell, 1999), the contributions to this book further explore the connectivity between gender and economy without assuming reductionist causality or restricting the sphere of gender norms to the sphere of economic importance.

Thus, the main aim of this book is to explore changing gendered norms and expectations in relation to the postsocialist transformation in Eastern Europe and Eurasia. We explore how the gendered legacies of state socialism are entangled with the geopolitical re-orientation of the region and the simultaneity of socio-economic, political, and cultural changes in this geographical space. How are gender expectations shaped in the conflict between impulses towards more gender equality versus the re-naturalisation/re-traditionalisation of gender norms, and how are the new gender norms entangled with the neoliberal economic demands, precarities, “multifaceted injustice” (Suchland, 2015, p. 188), new forms of socio-economic differentiation, and insecurities? How can the analysis of gender norms and expectations in the space of former state socialism contribute to a study of global developments in gender relationships?

Missbruk bland assyrier/syrianer: - En kvalitativ hermeneutisk studie om fem före detta missbrukare2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate a relatively unknown domain, namely the one of abuse amongst Assyrians/Syriacs. Although the community has lived in Sweden for more than 40 years and yields one for the countries larger immigrant groups, there has been little research performed addressing the question of abuse within the community. Hopefully this study will provide useful knowledge to those whom in one way or another deal with abusing Assyrians/Syriacs, such as for instance rehabilitation institutes or social welfare authorities. It might also promote a constructive debate on the issue within this specific community, which the author thinks is lacking, and to further shed light on the question of abuse in general.

By the method of qualitative study, five former abusing Assyrians/Syriacs, with backgrounds in drug substance abuse and/or gambling addiction have been studied. The primary questions have been those of how the subjects got into abusing, the time during the abuse, and how the abuse was overcome. Empirical data was collected through four individual face-to-face interviews and one via e-mail, and the resulting conclusions were drawn by relating the data to the theories of deviant behavior, labeling theory and Goldbergs deviant career model.

The main result of the study is that the respondents to various degrees have suffered a difficult childhood. In the case of many of them one parent was deceased prematurely or for others the parent was largely absent. Furthermore, some had to endure physical violence in different forms, threats, bullying, or discrimination, either in school, at home or by society. It became evident that the respondents have experienced one or several crisis in combination with grief, which has created a sense of insecurity on their lives.

The path away from abuse has been different for the individuals, although they all share having had the support from the closest family. One of the respondents became a born-again Christian and another went through various therapy rehabilitation treatments. The others have managed on their own with the support from family.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Involuntary Marriages From a Human Rights Perspective: Towards an Analytical Framework2018In: The Journal of Mesopotamian Studies, ISSN 2147-6659, Vol. 3, no 1, p. 95-120Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to develop an analytical framework for understanding involuntary marriages from a human rights perspective based on the United Nations’ human rights conventions and the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. The empirical material used as a basis for an analytical framework consists of 16 thematic open-ended interviews with Kurds in Sweden. A total of eight of the 16 respondents were below 18 years of age when they married. The results from these interviews show that the majority of interviewees’ marriages are arranged. The results also show that the reasons behind these marriages and the consequences of them are complex and go beyond being mere expressions of gender roles. In addition to the fathers who typically have greater influence than the mothers do, there are differences in power and influence among women as well, such as mothers’ power over daughters and step-mothers’ power over step-daughters. Therefore, there is a need for new and wider perspectives on involuntary marriages, and the analytical framework developed in this article is a part of such a purpose.

    Abstract [en]

Developing a program theory for a project and evaluate the project based on this program theory has both its merits and limitations. These merits and limitations in turn may be depend on the existing attitude towards a particular program theory. This study is about exploring how different phases and parts of the national learning project Care on equal terms (2011-2014) functioned in relation to the program theory developed in the beginning of the project. The result shows that the program theoretical perspective on the project contributed to a better structuring of the various forms of evaluation, given a broader understanding of the project's components and provided better opportunities to improve monitoring of the project by the research team in collaboration with the project management of the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR) and the participating health care units.

Mångfaldens organisering: Om integration, organisationer och interetniska relationer i Sverige2007Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this dissertation is to examine inter-ethnic relations between organizationally active people with different ethnic backgrounds. I focus on relations that are based on a mutual interdependence between parties, mutual respect, common procedural rules, real opportunities that expressly approve or reject a proposal in a decision or deliberation situation free from compulsion, where people, who have different ethnic backgrounds, strive after insight and understanding in their relations.

In this dissertation I present three empirical cases about cooperation, consultation and participation as forms of inter-ethnic relations from the organizational fields in the society. These cases are examples of what I characterize as “organizing inter-ethnicity”, or organizing people with different ethnic backgrounds around common concerns. Organizing inter-ethnicity is in turn a part of organizing and integrating diversity in society. Drawing on the results of three case studies, I distinguish between opportunities and barriers.

My case studies clearly illustrate that the tensions that influence the patterns of and variation in opportunities and barriers have sources that reach well beyond ethnicity. Tensions between old and new organizations, between working immigrant organizations and refugee organizations, between organizations from same group or between organizations that have conflicts from their members’ countries of origin provide some examples of the difficulties that generate barriers to broad interest constellations between organizations.

Empowering Unaccompanied Children in Everyday Life in a New Country: A Resilience Support Centre in Sweden Evaluated from the Perspective of Program Theory2016In: Revista de Asistenta Sociala, ISSN 1583-0608, Social Work Review, ISSN 1583-0608, Vol. 15, no 2, p. 35-56Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children coming to Sweden are almost all fleeing from violent or threatening situations in their home country and have been sent abroad for their protection. They form a specific growing group of children looked after by local authorities in kinship foster families, network foster families or traditional foster families, as well as in small institutions (HVB-hem) or interim accommodation (Mellanbo) as preparation for independent living. This study explores success factors and impeding factors in a social work intervention for empowering unaccompanied children at a support centre for daily activities in a Swedish municipality from a program-theory perspective. The unaccompanied children in this study are staying in foster families. The data was collected at the centre and with a mixed method design. The results show that unaccompanied children’s relationships with other children improved; they developed their ability to plan and adapt; some of them started to attend regular schools; and traumatic experiences were processed to some extent. All of these can be interpreted as increased empowerment in unaccompanied children’s everyday life. However, there were still significant gaps in participation in clubs and associations and leisure activities, and some children were mentally unwell. Success factors, challenges and risks coexist in a transnational life situation in which most unaccompanied asylum-seeking children continue to interact with their parents and other family members in their home country or another country using modern technology (online parenting).

    Abstract [en]

Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children coming to Sweden are almost all fleeing from violent or threatening situations in their home country and have been sent abroad for their protection. They form a specific growing group of children looked after by local authorities in kinship foster families, network foster families or traditional foster families, as well as in institutions (HVB-hem) or interim accommodation (Mellanbo) as preparation for independent living. This research study explores some daytime activities within social work for unaccompanied children at a support centre, Solitario. The centre existed for three years and some of the activities are now included in regular activities by the local authorities supporting unaccompanied children. The methods used in this study were 12 in-depth interviews with children, in-depth interviews with all staff at the centre and systematic longitudinal assessments performed by staff of 17 children attending the centre in 2009 as well as in 2011. The results show that there is a breakdown of the structures and communities that should support the unaccompanied child in the everyday life. There is not good enough cooperation and coproduction in supporting the best of the child in line with United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN CRC). The basic idea of UN CRC is that the child should be seen as an independent subject and actor. Because of their living situation, unaccompanied children are forced to take action and to do so independent of their microsystem – their nuclear family – or with just a trans-national support in web-based microsystem relationships.

    Abstract [en]

Beyond school performance. An analysis of PISA 2006 from an intersectional perspective.

One of the central questions in recent discussions about Swedish school is those factors that influence school performance. Socio-economic background, gender, ethnicity, birth country are some aspects that are mentioned in many international and national studies. Swedenis one of the participants in Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the results ofPISA since 2000 show deteriorated results in reading performance, mathematics and science among 15-year-old students. In order to set school performance in a broader context we analyzed data for the Swedish part of PISA 2006, in which 57 countries (of which 30 OECD-countries) participated, with some multivariate methods from an intersectional perspective. Our analysis of PISA 2006 show complexity of different social, economic and cultural factors for students´ school performance which strengthens even by the preliminary results from PISA 2009 presented when we finished our analysis. Further, our results show that students´ school performance have connections also with social inequality in Swedish society.

    Abstract [en]

Change-projects can be evaluated in different ways. One of the ways is to evaluate with process thinking, which means that evaluators are involved in the process from the very beginning. Involvement of evaluators already in the beginning of a project can mean several challenges for both the project itself and the evaluators. This study is about describing and analyzing how and with what results the perspective of process thinking on evaluation of the national learning project Care on equal terms was used. The results indicate, among other things, that it was a good choice to bring in evaluation perspective at the beginning of the project. Process thinking has, among other things, contributed to the activities throughout the project, and played a role in learning from and implementation of the project itself.

Health Care Provider’s Perceptions about and Experiences of Achieving Equitable Health Care: An Evaluation Study2017In: Quality in Primary Care, ISSN 1479-1072, E-ISSN 1479-1064, Vol. 25, no 5, p. 289-296Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: In June 2011 the Swedish government signed an agreement with The Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR), for a three year project to develop and implement “Health care on equal terms.” The project, which involved seven Primary Health Care Units (PHCU) from five county councils in different parts in Sweden, was completed in early 2014. The aim of the project was to develop methods and activities that could promote more equal health care provision in socio-economically disadvantaged areas.

Aim: To assess and compare health care providers’ experiences of and perceptions about equitable health care at the beginning and end of the national project “Health care on equal terms”.

Methods: A web survey was sent to all staff at the seven participating Primary Health Care Units (PHCU) at the beginning (2012) and the end (2013) of the project. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and the open issues with content analysis.

Results: In 2013, the percentage of health care providers who reported thinking patients’ ethnicity had no or very little impact on access to care increased, but the proportion of those who reported that they had “no idea” that patients’ gender, age, mental health and physical functioning were significant for access to care was lower in 2013 than in 2012. The results from analysis of the open-ended questions did not show meaningful changes in the respondents’ perceptions of the issues addressed in 2012-2013, but the analysis contributes to a deeper explanation of the answers.

Conclusion: The main conclusion is that it was possible to implement changes aiming for more equitable care through projects with a focus on learning.

Fejkade orgasmer och Spruckna anus: En studie om konstruktionen av kvinnlig sexualitet i livsstilsmagasinen Slitz och Cosmopolitan2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study aims to broaden the understanding of, and knowledge about, the way youth-counsellors interpret and apprehend mental health of adolescents and their experiences of meeting with adolescents. Semi structured interviews with youth-counsellors of different occupations, dealing with adolescents, were carried out. The results show that youth-counsellors encounter both poor and good mental health among the adolescents they meet. When young people suffer from poor mental health it shows in a multitude of ways, for example; stress and anxiety. Ways of coping vary between individuals. Some seek out help on their own, some need the support of others and some develop negative behavioural patterns. Results show that youth-counsellors can support adolescents with poor mental health by having open dialogs, taking preventive actions and cooperating with other authorities. Youth-counsellors observe that poor mental health does not protrude in different ways regardless of sex but that girls tend to seek out help more often than boys. According to the results of this study, the work done by youth counsellors overall still needs development. Also, the pre-emptive work with reducing mental health problems of adolescents needs to be developed within their profession.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was that based on professionals' knowledge and experiences of young adults explore how the provision in chapter 4 § 4 SoL used in practice and whether it allows the chance to self-sufficiency .This was done through qualitative interviews with welfare benefits administrators, counselor , and young adults with connections to the subject .The study is inductive with a hermeneutic approach and the material has been analyzed using Maslow's hierarchy of needs , empowerment theory and previous research. The result showed that a competence-raising effort will ultimately lead to self-sufficiency, but also develops the participants' psychological well-being. Although participation in skill-enhancing activity is a requirement to receive welfare benefits, the young adults have a positive experience of the activities and counselors in contrast to previous research. The reason for the positive outcome seems to depend on the individual aid and the design.

Kärlekens tid har bevarat dess längtan: en hermeneutisk studie om kärleksrelationen i det senmoderna samhället2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]
