    Abstract [en]

    Title: The customers visit at the car dealership – A thesis about customerperceived service quality

    Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to examine customer perceived servicequality during the visit to the car dealership. The information canlater be used by car retailers to improve their service quality.

    Method: In order to satisfy our purpose, the authors decided to use bothqualitative and quantitative research methods. The empirical datawas collected by both questionnaires and semi‐structuredinterviews, which both took place at Bilia in Västerås. The abovemethods were both based on and analyzed using SERVQUAL, theGapanalysis and the model for total perceived quality.

    Conclusion: The customers pointed out that most of the different dimensions ofthe service delivery can be improved. While keeping that in mind,the study showed greater need for improvement in the SERVQUALdimensions named Responsiveness and Empathy and whatGrönroos calls Functional Quality. These areas can be described ashow the customers are met and taken care of during their visit atthe car dealership. In other words, the main areas that needimprovement are related to the human interaction between thecustomer and the company. According to the authors, if thecompany manages to increase the perceived quality in these areas,a competitive edge will be gained. This will lead to increased salesof used cars.

    Abstract [sv]

    Markförstärkning i ett vägbygge kan göras på olika sätt. I detta examensarbete jämför vi två av dessa metoder, nämligen massutskiftningsmetoden och användning av kalkcementpelare ur energi- och miljösynpunkt. För att jämföra dessa två metoder togs fram ett excelbaserat räkneverktyg där resultatet av energiförbrukningen fås i kWh och koldioxidemissioner i ton CO2. Denna jämförelse gjordes för ett specifikt vägprojekt som använde massutskiftningsmetoden för vägunderbyggnaden. Det som ingick i beräkningen var schaktning, fyllning, krossning, sprängning, transporter och kalkcementpelare. För denna uträkning användes data från både entreprenörer som var med i projektet och företag som hade dokumenterade data.

    Metoden som förbrukade minst energi och som släppte ut minst koldioxidemissioner var massutskiftningsmetoden. Det som gjorde att kalkcementpelare till en sämre metod var den höga energiförbrukningen som krävdes för tillverkningen av kalk och cement. Det som krävde mest energi i tillverkningsprocessen var ugnar där höga temperaturer krävdes.

    Skillnaden mellan utskiftningsmetoden och kalkcementpelare i objektet var att i massutskiftningsmetoden krävdes urgrävningar för att schakta bort jordmaterial med dålig hållfasthet och ersätta det med bergmaterial med hög hållfasthet. I denna metod går energi åt till schaktning, fyllning och transport. Medan förstärkningsmetoden med kalkcementpelare förbrukar energi för tillverkning, transport och installation. Eftersom metoden går ut på att vägbyggnaden ska vila på pelarna genom att borra ner dessa i marken istället för att schakta bort stora volymer och transportera dem till fyllningen så är det lätt att tro att kalkcementpelare sparar energi genom att minska massförflyttning och långa transporter. Resultatet av detta examensarbete har visat motsatsen.

    Abstract [en]

    This degree project studies the future regulations for the installation of electronic flight bags (EFB) with focus on the hardware and its safety implications in which the task was given by Bromma Air Maintenance (BAM). The aim is to ease the operator to handle issues dealing with EFB; such as lithium battery fire in the cockpit, placement of EFB in the cockpit, etc. This also addresses flight safety, flight controls, emergency evacuation and solutions in dealing with such issues. Flight safely is a vital factor to be considered since it jeopardizes lives. As recent reports indicate an increase in lithium battery powered devices incidents on aircrafts, this paves the way to find new solutions and procedures to mitigate them. By studying the current regulations, Acceptable Means of Compliance (AMC), Advisory Circular (AC) regarding the usage/installation of EFB and future regulation draft (NPA) this study analyzed the changes, which indicated that there were not many significant changes made to the future regulation (new AMC). Although many chapter of the current AMC have been removed and introduced into a new section under AMC & GM (Guidance Material). Different placement of the EFB in cockpit has also been studied in this degree project, which has shown that depending on the placement choice of the aircraft operator there are advantages and disadvantages. This follows by studying the lithium (Li-ion) batteries: technology, mitigation of fire and procedures for lithium battery fire while also studying the recent incidents regarding lithium batteries fire and explosion in commercial and cargo flights. The solutions consist of using the latest technology to propose a new approach to charge the batteries, and store the burning batteries as well. This lead to a smart inductive charger and a smart fire contamination bag to be integrated into the procedures.

    Sustainable flue-gas quench: For waste incineration plants within a water-energy-environment nexus perspective2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    The function of a flue-gas quench is to remove additional contaminants from flue-gas and to reduce the wastewater from a waste incineration plant. The aim of this degree project is to find how the system is affected by using a quench and what factors limits the performance. This is done by modelling and simulating a waste incineration plant in Aspen Plus. Data and plant schematics were obtained by a study visit to Mälarenergi Plant 6 situated in Västerås, Sweden, which were used as model input and for model validation. The results have shown that the amount of wastewater can be reduced by more than half compared to a plant without a quench. The heat produced in the condenser, when discharging water to the boiler, would be lowered by up to 20%. For systems with a quench present when more water was discharged to the boiler both the heat production and the pollutant capturing became better. However, the system has limits regarding the amount that could be recirculated, in the form of temperature limits in different parts of the system. In addition, if the heat load is low there is an insufficient amount of wastewater generated in the condenser to run the quench. In that situation, clean (fresh) water needs to be used instead. Using clean water is unwanted since the plant will then consume more resources while still producing less heat than a plant without a quench would.

    Abstract [sv]

    Detta examensarbete fokuserar på energieffektivisering av flerbostadshus som är uppförda under 1960-talet. Eftersom sektorn bostäder och service står nuförtiden för cirka 40 % av landets totala energianvändning, så är det värt att försöka åtgärda befintliga byggnader som läcker onödig stor energi. I den här rapporten redogörs för vilka möjligheter som kan leda till minskad energianvändning i byggnader vid omfattande ombyggnation. Det finns två viktiga anledningar till varför fastighetsbolagen bör satsa på energieffektivisering vilka är ekonomin och miljön. Syftet med detta arbete är att fokusera på att minska energianvändningen i ett flerbostadshus som är beläget i Skultuna. Boendesvanor gällande hushållsel kommer inte att tas upp i denna rapport. De föreslagna åtgärderna berör endast byggnadsteknik och installationsteknik. Nybyggnation av passivhus i kvarteret Berggrottan har redovisats för att ge insikt om de olika byggnadstyperna gällande energiförbrukning och byggnadsteknik. Passivhuskonceptet har diskuterats för att ge inspiration och vetskap om hur man kan applicera passivhustekniken vid ombyggnation och för att se om det är möjligt att skapa ett lågenergihus vid ombyggnation eller inte. Den undersökta byggnaden är en av de typiska trevåningars lamellhus som har producerats i stort antal under perioden 1960-1975. Detta arbete ska fungera som ett utvecklingsunderlag för Mimer som satsar på energifrågorna och vill göra besparingsåtgärder i sina gamla flerbostadshus särskilt de som förbrukar mycket energi. De studerade förslagen har indelats i två kategorier. Den ena handlar om byggnadstekniska åtgärder, vilka är tilläggsisolering av fasader, tilläggsisolering av vindsbjälklaget och byte av fönster. Den andra handlar om installationstekniska lösningar, vilka är montering av Wanpan golvlist och installering av solfångare. Resultatet från utförda energiberäkningar visar att transmissionsförlusterna minskas från 47 % till 24 % om de föreslagna byggnadstekniska åtgärderna följs. Dessutom besparas totalt 116 700 kr/år . Till slut kan konstateras att möjligheten att skapa lågenergihus finns, men om ytterligare åtgärder införs. Det är svårt att bestämma vilka åtgärder är effektivast eftersom det beror i första hand på vilka förutsättningar som finns. Varje byggnad är unik och har sina speciella förutsättningar, så därför är det viktigt att studera den som ett helt system.

    Abstract [en]

    Progressive collapses may occur when a bearing wall is eliminated for various reasons. It can be a gas explosion or collision accident of a train or a vehicle, but also during renovation of a building component. After the wall has been eliminated, the building should be undamaged and not suffer a progressive collapse. Such an event can be avoided through a vertical link. The purpose of this study is to examine how secure today's vertical strap’sare against progressive collapse, and to find a solution for reduced risk of collapse Method: This study includes a literature review and a case study. The literature review was performed by a deepening of the existing literature that investigated the progressive collapse and the vertical drag strip. The studies found through the database Google school and Discovery. The case study was conducted in Kadesjös which is an engineering office where drawings and calculations were performed. Result: The result indicates that the vertical strap used today cannot withstand the design load if the entire wall (including the screw attachment) is eliminated. The threaded rod will then be pulled out of the floor and a progressive collapse occurs. By mounting a 70x70mm plate in the floor this can be prevented. Without the plate it takes only 58 kN to pull out the threaded rod from the floor, but with the plate the connection’s capacity is increased to 100 kN and then the anchorage pipe limits the capacity. Conclusion: The conclusion of this thesis is that a plate that increases the vertical strap’s capacity and thereby increases the safety against progressive collapse should be used.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose: Literature on knowledge transfer has mainly studied this topic at macro level. The purpose of this research is to explore the university's role in the university-to-industry knowledge transfer on a micro level. This study is focused on the role played by Mälardalen University (MU) in the knowledge transfer to local industry by focusing on the university practices accomplished to this end. The research question is: Through which practices does Mälardalen University take part in the university-to-industry knowledge transfer?

    Methodology/Approach:

    The case study is about MU in Sweden, in Västerås and Eskilstuna campuses. A qualitative study approach was conducted to explore the research question and sub-questions. With the use of semi-structured interviews primary data was collected. Information in the literature review and theoretical framework chapters were collected by drawing from the databases: ‘ABI/inform’ and ‘Google Scholar’.

    Findings/conclusion:

    Based on the data collection, it can be concluded that the learning processes at MU rely on (experiential) ‘work and project-based-learning’ practices. These processes provide students with the knowledge demanded by the industry. The close collaboration between university and industry improves the preparation of students entering the job market in several ways. This research highlights which successful practices may be implemented at university level to promote the knowledge transfer to industry while supporting learning processes, particularly effective for engineering/nursing students. It also provides us with additional findings on the importance of co-creation practices in the development and innovation of knowledge creation.

    Limitations:

    A limitation of this study is the selective focus on one university. Another limitation is that the industrial perspective is excluded. However, such a limitation sheds light on a focus for possible future research.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to analyze Volvo CE´s current innovation management strategy and compare it with the European Committee for Standardization´s (CENT/TS) standardized innovation management system. The study can be helpful for the organization to understand the gap between their current management system and the recommendations found in the CEN/TS innovation management system. A qualitative research methodology with a deductive approach combined with action research has been used to answer and fulfill the research question and purpose of this study. Our theoretical framework will introduce the five areas presented in CEN/TS IMS (2013) and describe their content more detailed with help from theoretical frameworks related to these areas. We will also consider other theorist's perspectives and compare their thoughts, description and models with what is been described in the CEN/TS regarding these five areas.Empiricism: Interviews with three of Volvo CE´s innovation coaches has been made to gain an understanding about the current status of the company´s innovation management strategies related to the requirements the five areas mentioned within CEN/TS IMS. In the Analysis section, a gap analysis has been made between Volvo CE´s current innovation management strategies and the requirements of the CEN/TS IMS for each area covered by this study. Overall, we think that Volvo CE have a good potential to develop a fully functional IMS in accordance with the requirements of CEN/TS 16555-1 into their organization with their current innovation management model as a starting point to build upon, and by following the references and recommendations provided by this study, the company has great chances in succeed with this mission

    Tidigare studier har visat att kvinnor upplever högre arbetstillfredsställelse än män samt att äldre medarbetare är mer motiverade till arbete än yngre. Syftet med denna undersökning var att undersöka om det fanns några skillnader mellan anställdas upplevda arbetsmotivation och arbetstillfredsställelse beroende på deras kön och ålder. Deltagare var 97 anställda från tre olika arbetsplatser som utgjordes av en grundskola, ett industriföretag samt en bilfirma i södra Sverige. 53 av deltagarna var män och 44 kvinnor. Åldersgrupperna bestod av 48 yngre (18-40 år) och 49 äldre (41-65 år) deltagare. Arbetsmotivation mättes med Basic Psychological Needs Scales och bestod av delskalorna autonomi, kompetens och samhörighet. Arbetstillfredsställelse mättes med Minnesota Job Satisfaction Questionnaire och i form av inre, yttre samt generell tillfredsställelse. Resultatet visade signifikanta skillnader mellan åldersgrupperna gällande både arbetsmotivation och arbetstillfredsställelse men inga signifikanta skillnader mellan män och kvinnor.

    Syftet med vårt arbete var att undersöka om och hur elever upplever sitt inflytande över undervisningen i grundskolans tidigare år. Vår undersökning bygger på en kvantitativ enkätundersökning av elevers upplevelse gällande sitt elevinflytande, samt efterföljande kvalitativa intervjuer, och är utförd på en kommunal F-4 skola, som är belägen i en medelstor kommun. Enkätundersökning omfattar 90 stycken elever och intervjuerna är genomförda med 4 stycken elever. Resultaten av enkätundersökningen visar på att eleverna i stor utsträckning upplever att de har ett reellt inflytande (61 %) samt att en klar majoritet av eleverna är nöjda med i vilken utsträckning de upplever sin möjlighet till att påverka under lektionstid (82 %). Resultaten i undersökningarna både går emot och bekräftar tidigare forskning på området. Resultaten gällande elevernas upplevelse av att kunna utöva ett reellt inflytande är diametralt motsatt i jämförelse med tidigare forskning.Däremot stämmer resultaten gällande elevernas upplevelse av att vara nöjda med sin möjlighet till inflytande bra överens med den tidigare forskningen. Våra resultat överensstämmer med styrdokumentens intentioner.

    Abstract [en]

    Executing software processes in the cloud can bring several benefits to software development. In this paper, we discuss the benefits and considerations of cloud-based software processes. EXE-SPEM is our extension of the Software and Systems Process Engineering (SPEM2.0) Meta-model to support creating cloud-based executable software process models. Since SPEM2.0 is a visual modelling language, we introduce an XML notation meta-model and mapping rules from EXE-SPEM to this notation which can be executed in a workflow engine. We demonstrate our approach by modelling an example software process using EXE-SPEM and mapping it to the XML notation.

    Abstract [en]

    Engineering safety-critical systems is a complex task which involves multiple stakeholders. It requires shared and scalable computation to systematically involve geographically distributed teams. The paper proposes a model-driven cloud-based enactment architecture automating safety-critical processes. This work adapts our previous work on cloud-based software engineering by enriching the architecture with an automatic support for generation of both, product-based safety arguments from failure logic analysis results and process-based arguments from the process model and the enactment data. The approach is demonstrated using a fragment of a process adapted from the aerospace domain.

    Over the years, software development has evolved to meet the needs of new types of applications and to embrace new technological disruptions. Today, we witness the rise of mobility where the role of the conventional high-end PC is declining. Some refer to this era as the Post- PC era. This technological shift, powered by a key enabling technology, cloud computing, has opened new opportunities for human advancement. Consequently, the evolving landscape of software systems drives the need for new methods for conceiving them. Such methods need to: (a) address the challenges and requirements of this era and (b) embrace the benefits of new technological breakthroughs. In this paper, we list the characteristics of the Post-PC era from the software development perspective and describe two motivating trends of software development processes. Then, we derive a list of requirements for the future software development from the characteristics of the Post-PC era and from the motivating trends. Finally, we propose a reference architecture for cloud-based software process enactment as an enabler for Software Development as a Service. The architecture is the first step addressing the needs that we have identified.

Decision sup- port can help make the task allocation a more informed and systematic process. The challenges in allocating tasks to distributed sites exist because of three dis- tance dimensions between sites (geographical, temporal and cultural). An informed task allocation decision needs to consider these distances. Therefore, in this paper, we propose to integrate and semi-automate the calculation of an existing Global Distance Metric (GDM) into an architecture that supports executing cloud-based software processes. We analyze the potential of integrating the GDM into this archi- tecture and identify the needed extensions to the architecture.

    Abstract [en]

    Using cloud computing to execute software processes brings several benefits to software development. In a previous work, we proposed a reference architecture, which treats software processes as workflows and uses cloud computing to execute them. Scheduling the execution in the cloud impacts the execution cost and the cloud resources utilization. Existing workflow scheduling algorithms target business and scientific (data-driven) workflows, but not software processes workflows. In this paper, we adapt three scheduling algorithms for our architecture and propose a fourth one; the Proportional Adaptive Task Schedule algorithm. We evaluate the algorithms in terms of their execution cost, makespan and cloud resource utilization. Our results show that our proposed algorithm saves between 19.74% and 45.78% of the execution cost and provides the best resource (virtual machine) utilization compared to the adapted algorithms while providing the second best makespan.

    This degree project comprises 30 credits, i.e. 20 weeks of work. The work mainly deals with the energy balance for a multi-family house in Västerås and the requirements for energy conservation in the Swedish building code, BBR. Calculations of the energy balance are supplemented by a number of interviews.

     

    Energy conservation in general has become more important in recent years and the subject is in line with increased public awareness. This importance and attention is explained by environmental problems in general and global warming in particular, but also by rising energy prices. The Swedish authority Boverket has gradually changed the regulatory framework in order to improve the energy efficiency for new buildings. Boverket issues the Swedish building code BBR which includes energy requirements for buildings. The new BBR 16 was published after only about 6 month after the previous version BBR 15.

     

    This degree project includes a commission from the company Abetong AB to compare the previous BBR 15 against the new BBR 16 and find any changes, and compile these changes as clear as possible. The work also includes answers to some specific questions from the same company. One question is whether existing multi-family houses from the company would meet the new energy requirements of BBR 16. The energy balance of these houses is studied specifically when an exhaust air heat pump or a ventilation heat exchanger is used in order to save energy. To make this work particularly interesting, the window area was changed to see how this would affect the energy use in the buildings.

     

    To answer these questions, the energy simulation program VIP+ was used for calculations. These computer calculations have also been supplemented by hand calculations as a control measure. All results from the different calculations are put together and analyzed in this report.

     

    The overall conclusion from the calculation results is that the existing multi-family houses perform well with the present technology, and that they meet the new energy requirements in BBR 16. This means that no further measures in order to save energy in the houses are necessary in order to meet the newest requirements.

    Studies in recent years have revealed that use of ICT can significantly impact knowledge sharing in organizations by enhancing the knowledge sharing process, reducing knowledge sharing barriers, and introducing technology barriers. While this has been identified in many studies and a significant research has been carried out to identify knowledge sharing barriers, there exists a considerable dearth of research when the question of ‘which knowledge sharing barriers can ICT reduce and how?’ is posed. This thesis aims to address this question by studying the case of an organization using ICT for knowledge sharing. The study was carried out using questionnaire and interview findings and results showed that if ICT is effectively used, a number of knowledge sharing barriers - in addition to time and space barriers - can be successfully reduced. Organizational and individual knowledge sharing barriers saw most reduction by ICT while technology barriers did not see any reduction by use of ICT alone. This is in coherence with different studies that use of ICT for knowledge sharing introduces its own technology barriers. However the results show that if employees are tech-savvy and management considerably supports employee involvement in the process of design and deployment of ICT enabled knowledge sharing, technology barriers can also be greatly reduced and even entirely eliminated.

    Problem Statement: “How suitable is Bangladesh telecom market for an internationalized telecom company (TeliaSonera), and what could be a preferable entry strategy for such market?”

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate Bangladesh telecom market in order to find out the potentiality of the market which could be considered by the company to think about starting a business there and also to determine a suitable entry strategy from the company depending on the factors have been investigated.

    Methodology: The project is based on both primary and secondary information retrieved in connection with the theoretical framework. A qualitative approach of research and analysis has been considered to reach the desirable result.

    Theoretical Framework: The theoretical framework has been created with Porter’s (1998) five forces and National Diamond together with factors that influence the international entry strategy described by Franklin R (1998)

    Findings: While presenting the data, we have followed a structure. We have divided all our data in four parts. They are namely, The Focal Company Factors, Home country (Sweden) factors, the Focal country (Bangladesh) Factors, and the Focal country’s (Bangladesh) Telecom market factors. All data have been presented under the respective headings of these parts and also with some corresponding subheadings.

    Analysis: The analysis is based on the result of a consolidated evaluation of relevant theory and empirical information collected accordingly. All the collected information has been observed through the gloss of theoretical framework and has been used for answering the problem statement.

    Conclusion: After investigating the factors of Bangladesh telecom market, we can conclude that it will be a good idea for TeliaSonera to expand their business in Bangladesh as both the industry and the country has a lot of potential to offer. An Investment entry mode (Joint Venture) has been suggested. It is worth mentionable that this paper is a preliminary idea about the market to encourage TeliaSonera to expand in Bangladesh which reveals the opportunity for further research.

    Syftet med undersökningen är att belysa och bidra med kunskap om lärares upplevelser av och förhållningssätt kring genus i skolundervisningen. Undersökningen söker svar kring lärarnas medvetenhet i hur de agerar gentemot pojkar och flickor när de undervisar. Forskningsansatsen är kvalitativ. Datainsamlingen genomfördes med fem halvstrukturerade intervjuer. Resultatet visar att jämställdhet är något som är viktigt för lärarna. Deras medvetenhet är stor då de alltid försöker att behandla pojkar och flickor lika. Lärarna har en generell syn på pojkar och flickor som de inte alltid anser stämmer överens med hur pojkar och flickor är i verkligheten. Alla lärarna anser att det är viktigt att genus förs in i skolpedagogiken och att jämställdhet ska råda både i klassrummen och den övriga skolmiljön. En slutsats är att lärarna associerar ordet genus med jämställdhet. Lärarna lägger inte någon vikt vid de sociala, kulturella och historiskt förankrade värderingar som bidrar till att vi agerar som vi gör gentemot de olika könen. Utan kunskap och förståelse kring genusbegreppet så finns en risk att reproduktionen av könsroller och strukturer fortsätter.

    Researchers have proposed different methods for testing digital logic circuits. The need for testing digital logic circuits has become more important than ever due to the growing complexity of such systems. During the development process, testing is focusing on design defects as well as manufacturing and wear out type of defects. Failures in digital systems could be caused by design errors, the use of inherently probabilistic devices, and manufacturing variability. The research in this area has focused also on the design of digital logic circuit for achieving better testability. In addition, automated test generation has been used to create tests that can quickly and accurately identify faulty components. Examples of such methods are the Ad Hoc techniques, Scan Path Technique for testable sequential circuits, and the random scan technique. With the research domain becoming more mature and the number of related studies increasing, it is essential to systematically identify, analyse and classify the papers in this area. The systematic mapping study of testing digital circuits performed in this thesis aims at providing an overview of the research trends in this domain and empirical evidence. In order to restrict the scope of the mapping study we only focus on some of the most widely-used and well-supported hardware description languages (HDLs): Verilog, SystemVerilog and VHDL. Our results suggest that most of the methods proposed for test generation of digital circuits are focused on the behavioral level and Register Transfer Levels. Fault independent test generation is the most frequently applied test goal and simulation is the most common experimental test evaluation method. Majority of papers published in this area are conference papers and the publication trend shows a growing interest in this area. 63% of papers execute the test method proposed. An equal percentage of papers experimetnatlly evaluate the test method they propose. From the mapping study we inferred that papers that execute the test method proposed, evaluate them as well.

    The report includes an analysis of cooling and heating systems of electric aircraft as this is the main area of ​​the work. There are several cooling systems and heating systems, but this work focuses only on small aircraft, which means that the systems available are limited due to the size importance of the systems. These systems should keep the batteries at constant temperature during all operations the aircraft is going through. As the effect on batteries may vary depending on the temperature.

    The vision of this work is to find a solution to how the battery can maintain constant temperature for a powered aircraft.

    The work also includes a study on different types of batteries and its specifications. The study also includes various battery cooling types that can be installed in a powered aircraft.

    The method of this work is to collect facts in the background, then analyze the fact under the method and compare the different aircrafts, batteries and different cooling as well as heating systems that may be suitable for an electric aircraft.

    The main result of the report landed on the Extra 330LE aircraft. The choice of battery is lithium ion batteries, due to the high power and light weight the batteries have. Both heating and cooling systems selected for both Extra 330LE and Lithium Ion batteries are direct air cooling and insulation system Tesla uses.

    The report summarizes the possible cooling and heating systems that an electric powered airplane can have for best performance, in other words, how will these cooling and heating systems affect the aircraft, such as the weight, cooling and heating ability and if the aircraft is capable of having such heat or cooling system.

    Gender expression of individual cushions of Silene acaulis was shown to vary between years. Fifteen of thirty-nine (= 38%) cushions monitored changed gender expression between 1993 and 1995. Cushions dominated by female flowers were shown to be more stable in gender expression than cushions dominated by male or hermaphrodite flowers.

    Pollen viability among genders and limitation of female seed production in a natural trioecious population of the circumpolar cushion plant Silene acaulis was examined. Pollen viability was estimated by an in vitro pollen germination experiment. Both male and hermaphrodite flowers displayed large variation in pollen viability (0-53% in hermaphrodite and 0-54% in male flowers). There was a significant difference between genders in pollen viability: male plants had on average higher pollen viability than hermaphrodite plants. Resource and pollen limitation of seed production was studied by an experiment consisting of three treatments; (I) hand-pollination and removal of all other flowers on the cushion, (II) harid-pollination without removal of other flowers, and (III) open pollination without removal of flowers, Hand-pollination increased seed production, whereas removal of flowers had no effect on seed production. Abortion of pollinated ovules during seed development and seed mass did not differ among treatments. To control for effect of fruit number on seed production, data from naturally pollinated individuals was used. There was a positive correlation between both total number of seeds and fruit number, mean seed number per fruit and fruit number, respectively. These results indicate that seed production of S. acaulis is mainly limited by pollen availability whereas resource competition between fruits is not important as a limiting factor. The possible role of male quality differences between genders and pollen limitation of seed production for maintenance of trioecious reproductive systems is discussed.

    The aim of this study was to test if early no overing species respond with increased seed production to climate warming as is predicted for late-flowering seed-risk strategists. Experimental climate warming of about 3 degrees C was applied to two populations of the cushion-forming plant Silene acaulis (L.) Jacq. The experiment was run at one subarctic site and one alpine site for 2 years and 1 year, respectively, using open-top chambers (OTC). The 2-year temperature enhancement at the subarctic site had a marked effect on the flowering phenology. Cushions inside the OTC started flowering substantially earlier than control cushions. Both the male and female phases developed faster in the OTCs, and maturation of capsules occurred earlier. The cushions also responded positively in reproductive terms and produced more mature seeds and had a higher seed/ovule ratio. After 1 year temperature enhancement at the alpine site there was a weak trend for earlier flowering, but there was no significant difference in seed production or seed/ovule ratio.

    The adoption to sustainable production is a continuous but necessary strive for manufacturing operations, including small and medium enterprises, SMEs. Meeting the future needs of the economic, social and environmental dimensions provides challenges for SMEs. In order to meet these challenges, understanding of internal and external enablers is required. Studies focusing on the enablers for sustainability among SMEs are rare; hence these companies are important players in the supply chain to focal companies. In order to enhance the understanding of the adoption of sustainable production for the sector surface treatment SMEs, an exploratory study has been conducted. In this study, the focus has been placed in the identification and analysis of the challenges and enablers for adoption of sustainable production. Two stages of empirical data collection were undertaken: a focus group session and an online questionnaire. The findings present challenges based on the limitations of the surface treatment process but also where enablers for the social, economic and environmental for meeting those challenges are interrelated. The results showed that these SMEs face challenges in their way towards sustainable production, mainly due to: low economic profitability, need for improvement in old working procedures, lack of fully understanding regarding environmental legislation, difficulty in ensuring workforce, lack of technology development and resistance towards change. These challenges could be faced through internal and external enablers, where the support of large-size customers and other stakeholders is critical for this sector.

    A common understanding of sustainable production principles and the identification of sustainable manufacturing practices among practitioners are key starting points in studying how manufacturers are making their operations more sustainable. However, there is a lack of insight in the literature connecting conceptual sustainable production principles, and the practices reflecting these principles. Using semi-structured interviews founded on the sustainable production principles posed by the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production, this paper presents an outlook of how companies in different industries carry out manufacturing practices related to the sustainability production principles. Results showed that the majority of sustainable manufacturing practices remain strongly centered on the environmental dimension of sustainability, with the greatest number of practices emanating from principles concerning energy and material conservation, and waste management. Similarly, reactive sustainable manufacturing practices prevailed over proactive sustainable manufacturing practices, as most of the practices aimed to comply with regulatory and market pressures. Quality and environmental management systems were acknowledged as important tools for putting sustainable production principles into practice; while Swedish environmental and social regulations were found to drive sustainable manufacturing practices. This study connects sustainable production principles with sustainable manufacturing practices and opens the way for further studies on a global or sector-specific scale.

    The purpose of this study is to do a comparison between luxurious fashion stores and normal/regular ones, describe the differences in terms of the store design and discuss the influences and their impact on the customer experience. The second purpose is to give suggestions to normal/regular fashion stores from Sweden regarding improvements that they might need to enhance the customer’s shopping experience.

    In order to complete this study, both primary and secondary data were collected. Primary data was collected by performing three different methods. First was an observation, which was done in both luxurious and normal/regular fashion stores. An interview was performed with the manager of H&M Västerås. Last but not least method was to apply a questionnaire in order to find out the customer’s opinion concerning their shopping experience. The secondary data was gathered from Mälardalen’s University data bases and library and also from online resources.

    Conclusion:               The luxurious fashion stores have a unique way of displaying their garments, which gives an idea of neatness, comfort and order. They also have special services that add to the customer’s shopping experience, enhancing it. Even thought normal/regular fashion stores are different from luxurious, they give a big importance to the quality, the price and displaying their garments in a specific order.

    When it comes to the shopping experience customers’ encounter, most of them considered that it is important to have helpful staff, right temperature, appropriate music and light and clean environment. Overall it can be seen, that even thought they are completely different, the normal/regular fashion stores still try to offer the best experience to their customers.

    Abstract [en]

    Energy assessment in buildings is an essential topic in order to achieve the set goals for energy efficiency. This thesis investigated the energy consumption in various scenarios in Husmuttern’s buildings. Different purposes (school and apartment), locations (Spain and Sweden) and materials combinations are modelled and analysed. The models were created in the building performance simulation tool IDA ICE. After the yearly energy demand results were obtained they were processed and analysed. Then several factors were changed in the model in order to investigate different impacts in the energy consumption of the building, such as the overall heat transfer, hot water consumption, windows and doors. Also, PV panels were installed in the model to obtain the potential penetration of renewable energy in the buildings. The results showed the different consumption in the buildings depending on the purpose and location, and the impact of the changed factors in the overall energy consumption. The change of windows to more efficient ones showed that the apartments improve their consumption more than the schools, especially in when the Spanish location is considered. This case also had the biggest possible change when the hot water demand is varied. Whereas if the door was the changed, the Swedish apartment has the most possible improvement.

    Cost analysis aims at determining the amount of resources required to run a program in terms of its input data sizes. Automatically inferring precise bounds, while at the same time being able to handle a wide class of programs, is a main challenge in cost analysis. (1) Existing methods which rely on computer algebra systems (CAS) to solve the obtained cost recurrence equations (CR) are very precise when applicable, but handle a very restricted class of CR. (2) Specific solvers developed for CR tend to sacrifice accuracy for wider applicability. In this paper, we present a novel approach to inferring precise upper and lower bounds on CR which, when compared to (1), is strictly more widely applicable while precision is kept and when compared to (2), is in practice more precise (obtaining even tighter complexity orders), keeps wide applicability and, besides, can be applied to obtain useful lower bounds as well. The main novelty is that we are able to accurately bound the worst-case/best-case cost of each iteration of the program loops and, then, by summing the resulting sequences, we achieve very precise upper/lower bounds.

    Cost analysis aims at determining the amount of resources required to run a program in terms of its input data sizes. The most challenging step is to infer the cost of executing the loops in the program. This requires bounding the number of iterations of each loop and finding tight bounds for the cost of each of its iterations. This article presents a novel approach to infer upper and lower bounds from cost relations. These relations are an extended form of standard recurrence equations that can be nondeterministic, contain inexact size constraints and have multiple arguments that increase and/or decrease. We propose novel techniques to automatically transform cost relations into worst-case and best-case deterministic one-argument recurrence relations. The solution of each recursive relation provides a preciseupper-bound and lower-bound for executing a corresponding loop in the program. Importantly, since the approach is developed at the level of the cost equations, our techniques are programming language independent.

    Kroppsuppfattningen handlar om hur en person ser på sin egen kropp. Höga nivåer av narcissism har tidigare sammankopplats med låga nivåer av kroppsmissnöje och höga nivåer av självkänsla (A. L. Jackson, S. K. Ervin & N. C. Hodge, 1992). Enkät undersökning genomfördes med syfte att studera om nivån av kroppsmissnöje hos pojkar i åldrarna 16 till 19 år (n = 104) påverkades av graden av narcissism samt graden av bas- och förvärvad självkänsla och nivån av BMI. Resultaten visade att narcissism var svagt korrelerande med både bas- och förvärvad självkänsla. Det fanns ingen skillnad mellan vare sig åldersgrupperna eller BMI nivåerna gällande nivån av kroppsmissnöje. Resultaten i den aktuella studien var överlag inte i linje med tidigare forskning.

    Abstract [en]

    This study is based on a socio-cultural perspective and the purpose was to show what the preschool class staff using for methods and activities to promote the students' language and language development. To carry out the study, a quantitative survey was used with mostly closed questions but also some open questions. The questionnaire was sent out to staff working in preschool classes. The questionnaires were sorted on the basis of which of the study's question they belonged to and the answers were analyzed, using descriptive statistics. The results showed that teachers in the preschool class, among other things, uses the Bornholm model, group and couple work as well as sound plays to promote pupils' language and language development in preschool class. Several of the teachers use the same methods. Even on the open questions, several of the respondents described the similar activities and methods.

    Abstract [en]

    This study develops models for predicting the economic lifetime of drilling machines used in mining. It uses three cases, each represented by a MATLAB code, to develop an optimisation model. The resulting ORT is fed as input to an artificial neural network (ANN) and the results translated into a relatively simple equation. The study finds that increasing the purchase price and decreasing the operating and maintenance costs will increase a machine's ORT linearly. Decreased maintenance cost has the largest impact on ORT, followed by increased purchase price and decreased operating cost. The ANN method gives a series of basic weight and response functions which can be made available to any engineer without the use of complicated software. It also helps decision-makers determine the best time economically to replace an old machine with a new one; thus, it can be extended to more general applications in the mining industry.

    Abstract [en]

    Scheduling theory generally assumes that real-time systems are mostly composed of activities with hard real-time requirements. Many systems are built today by composing different applications or components in the same system, leading to a mixture of many different kinds of requirements with small parts of the system having hard real-time requirements and other larger parts with requirements for more flexible scheduling and for quality of service. Hard real-time scheduling techniques are extremely pessimistic for the latter part of the application, and consequently it is necessary to use techniques that let the system resources be fully utilized to achieve the highest possible quality. This paper presents a framework for a scheduling architecture that provides the ability to compose several applications or components into the system, and to flexibly schedule the available resources while guaranteeing hard real-time requirements. The framework (called FSF) is independent of the underlying implementation, and can run on different underlying scheduling strategies. It is based on establishing service contracts that represent the complex and flexible requirements of the applications, and which are managed by the underlying system to provide the required level of service.

    Att hantera och förebygga konflikter har de senaste åren blivit en allt mer omfattande del i läraryrket. Om konflikter mellan elever inte uppmärksammas eller hanteras kan de komma att ge negativa konsekvenser genom att påverka undervisningen samt elevernas välbefinnande i skolan. Denna kvalitativa studie har syftet att studera hur lärare uppfattar sitt arbete med att hantera samt förebygga konflikter som uppstår mellan elever. För att studera detta har en fenomenografiskt intervju och analysmetod tillämpats. Fenomenografin grundar sig i hur människor uppfattar världen de lever i och specifikt för ansatsen är distinktionen mellan hur någonting är samt hur något uppfattas vara. Tio stycken lärare från fyra olika grundskolor har intervjuats och deras uttalade uppfattningar ligger till grund för det utfallsrum som vi fått. Uttalandena kring fenomenet konflikt har resulterat i sju olika kategorier. För att skapa dessa kategorier har vi utifrån uttalandena i intervjuerna uppmärksammat de likheter och skillnader som är signifikanta. Resultatet visar på att lärare uppfattar att konflikter på sociala medier, skojbråk, elaka blickar, raster och trånga utrymmen som de mest framträdande orsakerna till att konflikter uppstår. När konflikterna uppstår finns en generell uppfattning att lärarna hanterar konflikterna genom att direkt ta tag i dem, oavsett vad det handlar om eller hur omfattande konflikterna är. Goda relationer mellan elev och lärare samt mellan elever uppfattas vara betydelsefullt för hur konflikten hanteras men också för det förebyggande arbetet. För att bygga och utveckla starka relationer uppfattas samarbetsövningar och grupprocesser vara en stor del i arbetet. En ytterligare bidragande faktor för att skapa goda relationer är att vara omhändertagande samt visa engagemang för eleverna.
