    Research question: In what way are small-­‐scale coffee farmers in the region of Junín, Peru, able to benefit from “Organic” certifications or conventional coffee cultivation to develop sustainable?

    Purpose: The purpose of this field study was to get an understanding of how and if organic farming is an adequate solution for sustainable development of small-­‐scale coffee farmers in developing countries or not.

    Method: This bachelor thesis was done as a field study financed by the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) under the program of Minor Field Studies provided by the International Programme Office for Education and Training. For the field study a qualitative method has been used to better submit how the people involved understand and interpret their surrounding reality and to get a deep insight in their lives. The nature of the research question and the test subjects provided for a qualitative method rather than a quantitative. Qualitative measuring methods used for primary data gathering were, in-­‐depth interviews, observations, participations, spontaneous conversations, videos and photographs. Secondary sources used include literature, news magazines, public documents, and statistical data provided by organizations, institutions, webpages, and libraries through both Internet and physical form. The theoretical framework that lays a ground for the study has been based upon scholarly journals, scientific studies, scientific articles and other relevant existing research. The data that was gathered were later analyzed by qualitative methods.

    Conclusion: Small-­‐scale coffee farmers in developing countries are able to benefit from organic certification but it cannot be considered a sustainable development. There’s too little emphasis on the social and economical aspects and too much focus on the environmental factors by the organic certification to make it interesting to many farmers. For a small-­‐scale coffee farmer to benefit from the organic certifications he need to have a very low intense cultivation from the beginning, before becoming certified. The organic certification incurs increased costs for the farmer and is more labor intense while it at the same time provides limited productivity ability and only gives a slightly better price to the farmer for his product. Farmers that grows conventional coffee and have a somewhat managed plantation will not benefit from certifying organic as it would give them the same income or less. The organic growing procedure also prohibits the use of important pesticides as insecticides and herbicides that makes organic farmers further susceptible and sensible for diseases and plagues on their crop. The numerous facts that make organic growing low productive labor intense makes it more motivating for many farmers to chose conventional coffee cultivation instead of organic and working with certification.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the flue gas fan in Mälarenergi’s Unit 6 and try to find what is causing the vibrations increase.

    The Fast Fourier transform (FFT) method was used for this degree project. A comparison was made with previous studies using FFT in order to pinpoint the source of the problem with vibrations. After a possible source had been identified, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was performed using ANSYS to visualize the problem. Two cases were simulated using two different turbulence models: the K-epsilon model and the Large-eddy simulation (LES) model. The result from the CFD simulations was compared with previous studies that used similar turbulence models.

    The flue gas fan’s high vibrations are most likely flow-induced. The simulation result indicates that LES model performed better than the Kepsilon model. The lack of validation in this degree work means that it is hard to know the accuracy of the model. Based on the simulation results the most promising solution seems to be inlet straighteners.

    Locum AB är en av Sveriges större fastighetsförvaltare med ett bestånd av ca 2,1 miljoner kvadratmeter lokaler i Stockholms län med en vision om att tillhandahålla vårdmiljöer för vård i världsklass. Karolinska uppgår till ca 394500 m2. Det finns en eftersträvan att minska energiförbrukning och miljöpåverkan.

    Syftet med examensarbetet är att skapa en arbetsstrategi hur man kan arbeta systematiskt med energieffektivisering och optimering på ett sjukhus så att sjukhuset drivs så ekonomiskt som möjligt i avseende på energiförsörjningen.

    Ett antal beräkningsexempel har genomförts för att kunna göra överslagsberäkningar i vardagen över hur pass mycket en driftavvikelse kostar för en fastighetsägare vilket ger ett beslutsunderlag hur mycket resurs som skall avsättas för att åtgärda avvikelsen.

    En litteraturstudie har genomförts och ett antal intervjuer har gjorts med berörd personal vilket har resulterat i en kartläggning av hur sjukhuset sköts idag. En omfattande genomgång och övervakning har skett av driftövervakningssystemet för att få en överblick av alla processer och sammankopplade flöden för att få en förståelse för vad som påverkar vad vid eventuella optimeringar och i synnerhet vid driftavvikelser och haverier. Slutligen har en analys av ett antal felindikatorer tagits fram, både efter egna och andras erfarenheter samt några generella överslagsberäkningar har genomförts för att underlätta för daglig personal hur mycket resurser som ska avsättas för avhjälpande av uppkomna driftavvikelser samt hur mycket en felaktig styrning kan påverkas rent ekonomiskt.

    Slutsatserna är att varje sjukhus bör ha en strategiplan för hur energiförbrukningen ska följas upp. Många driftavvikelser är tillfälliga och kan även på kort sikt få ganska stora ekonomiska konsekvenser. I systemen kan det finnas optimeringsproblem som kan vara svåra att identifiera. Att hitta dessa kan vara ett tidskrävande arbete och kräver en hel del kunskap om systemet och vilka konsekvenser utanför systemet som en förändring kan medföra.

    Man bör regelbundet analysera medieförbrukningen. Att aktivt övervaka och styra en anläggning kan öka möjligheter att göra energibesparingar även vid manuell drift av aggregat som till exempel kylåtervinning. Är sjukhuset under byggnation eller ombyggnation så kan det vara värt ur ett rent energiekonomiskt perspektiv att övervaka de nya anläggningarna beträffande optimering och energiförbrukning.

    Development of Robust Production Equipment: A guide to strong collaboration between users and suppliers2016Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    The result of today’s global and increasingly tough competition is narrow market windows and a demand for quick volume increases in production. This in turn means increased demands for a rapid and effective development of production equipment that ensures high performance right at the start of production. Robust production equipment with a high level of production efficiency and reduced costs for operation and maintenance therefore make up one of the most important factors for strong competitiveness and high profitability for Swedish industrial enterprises. Strong collaboration between users and suppliers is the key to success in this type of investment project. This handbook therefore presents a model that can be used by manufacturing companies who want to develop robust production equipment. The model and the other recommendations of the handbook focus on projects that are to be carried out in strong collaboration and are targeted at both users and suppliers. The model has been deve-loped through “EQUIP – User-supplier integration in production equipment design”, which has received funding from the Knowledge Foundation 2013–2016. The model consists of seven development phases based on the production equipment life cycle: Phase 1 – Preliminary study Phase 2 – Concept study Phase 3 – Procurement Phase 4 – Detailed design Phase 5 – Construction Phase 6 – Installation and commissioning Phase 7 – Production In each phase, critical activity steps and recommendations are presented for how to distribute responsibility within and between the parties involved. The model adopts a life cycle perspective for development projects in order to facilitate collaboration and to more clearly visualise the link between activities and their impact on the project success. Within the scope of an investment project, there is a great potential for developing sustainable production solutions. For this reason, this handbook also presents seven guidelines that may provide you with support in developing production equipment that remains secure, lean and sustainable throughout the equipment life cycle. The main purpose of the handbook is to facilitate collaboration through the whole investment project in a way that benefits both parties and which contributes to lasting relationships. The results of the research project show that there is a great interest in improved collaboration from both users and suppliers. For this reason, support, tools and preparedness from both parties are required to venture into investing time and resources in collaboration from the beginning, in the early phases of a new development project. This is then the potential to lay the foundation for long-term collaboration and for designing the best possible production equipment in the shortest time possible.

    Av dagens globala och allt hårdare konkurrens följer korta marknadsfönster och krav på snabb volym- uppgång i produktion. Det innebär i sin tur ökade krav på snabb och effektiv utveckling av produktions- utrustning som säkerställer hög prestanda direkt vid produktionsstart. Robust produktionsutrustning med hög produktionseffektivitet och minskade kostnader för drift och underhåll är därför en av de viktigaste faktorerna för stark konkurrenskraft och hög lönsamhet för svenska industriföretag. God samverkan mellan beställare och leverantör är nyckeln till framgång i denna typ av investerings- projekt. Denna handbok presenterar därför en modell som kan användas av tillverkande företag som vill utveckla robust produktionsutrustning. Modellen och övriga rekommendationer i handboken fokuserar på projekt som ska genomföras i stark samverkan och riktar sig till både beställaren och leverantören. Den har utvecklats i forskningsprojektet ”EQUIP – kund- och leverantörsintegration i utformning av produktionsutrustning” som finansierats av KK-stiftelsen under 2013-2016. Modellen består av sju utvecklingsfaser som är baser- ade på produktionsutrustnings livscykel: Fas 1 – Förstudie Fas 2 – Konceptstudie Fas 3 – Upphandling Fas 4 – Detaljerad utformning Fas 5 – Uppbyggnad Fas 6 – Installation och driftsättning Fas 7 – Produktion I varje fas presenteras kritiska aktivitetssteg och rekommendationer för hur ansvaret för dessa bör fördelas inom och emellan deltagande parter. Inom ramen för ett investeringsprojekt finns stor potential att utveckla hållbara produktionslösningar. Därför presenterar denna handbok även sju guider som kan stödja er i att ta fram produktionsutrustning som är säker, lean och hållbar under hela utrustningens livscykel. Huvudsyftet med handboken är att underlätta samverkan under hela investeringsprojektet på ett sätt som gagnar båda parter och bidrar till varaktiga relationer. Forskningsprojektets resultat visar att det finns ett stort intresse för främjad samverkan från både beställ- are och leverantör. Därför behövs stöd, verktyg och beredskap från båda parter för att våga investera tid och resurser på samverkan redan från början, i de tidiga faserna av ett nytt utvecklingsprojekt. Det är då potentialen att lägga grunden till långsiktig samverkan och utforma bästa möjliga produktionsutrustning på kortast möjliga tid är som störst.

    In this paper we present the elements of a nexus approach linking water and energy and soil (or WES) to address urban environmental issues. If the notion of "nexus" has become mainstream in order to grasp the interactions between priority issues (especially between Water-Energy-Food or WEF nexus), it is considered both undisputed and ambiguous. After a review of the scientific literature on the concept of nexus, this paper proposes a WES nexus approach that focuses on: the urban scale as a priority action context, on soil - and its multidimensional trait (land, substrate, subsurface) - as a factor not yet sufficiently taken into account and on a heuristic approach that is not intended to give a prior definition of the nexus but rather to explore how the (WES) "nexus" is locally appropriated.

    Frågeställningar: För att kunna undersöka ersättningen för lokalkostnader ur ett kommunalt perspektiv har vi valt följande frågeställningar:

    - Vad ingår i kommunernas lokalkostnader? 

    - Använder kommunerna genomsnittlig lokalkostnad eller faktisk lokalkostnad vid fördelning av ersättningen för lokalkostnader?

    - Har det skett några förändringar i kommunernas lokalkostnader sedan skollagen ändrades?

    - Hur uppfyller kommunerna transparensen för ersättningen av lokalkostnader?

    Syfte: Syftet med uppsatsen är att få insikter i hur kommunerna uppfyller lagens intentioner om likabehandlingsprincipen och transparens vid ersättningen för lokalkostnader.

    Metod: Undersökningen utfördes med en kvalitativ metod, för att få förståelse för informationen som inhämtades. Vid insamling av primärdata var intervjuer den datainsamlingsmetod som användes med ett frågeformulär. Därefter analyserades den empiri som blev insamlad från intervjuerna.

    Slutsats:  Slutsatsen redovisar att det inte går att jämföra hur kommunernas hyror bestäms. Men det går delvis att dra slutsatser om vad som ingår i lokalkostnaderna för kommunerna. Kommunerna använder sig av genomsnittlig lokalkostnad per elev när de ger ersättning för lokalkostnader till fristående grundskolor. Det har skett förändringar i kommunernas lokalkostnader sedan skollagen ändrades år 2010. Fyra av fem kommuner kan visa underlag för hur ersättningen för lokalkostnader har beräknats.

    Syfte: Syftet är att utreda om tillämpningen av komponentavskrivningar bidrar till nytta för de allmännyttiga bostadsföretagens redovisning och vilka kostnader som tillämpningen av komponentavskrivningar ger upphov till.

    Metod: Studien utgår från en kvalitativ forskningsstrategi med semistrukturerade intervjuer som insamlingsmetod. Ett målstyrt urval av de allmännyttiga bostadsföretagen tillämpades. Operationaliseringen gjordes utifrån intervjuguiden och insamlandet av empirin transkriberades och kodades för att underlätta analysarbetet.

    Slutsats: Studien har enbart inriktat sig på de sju allmännyttiga bostadsföretagen som är med i studien. Därför går det inte att dra några slutsatser om alla allmännyttiga bostadsföretag i Sverige. Det har framkommit att komponentavskrivningar bidrar till nytta för fem av de sju allmännyttiga bostadsföretagen. Kostnader för tillämpning av komponentavskrivningar är merarbete och kostnader för dataprogram.

    Abstract [en]

    In the past five years the energy- and climate advisors representing the municipality of Västerås Sweden have conducted an energy-saving campaign concerning households, which will be completed during fall 2015. The aim of the campaign was to raise awareness of the free energy-guidance provided to inhabitants of Västerås and the necessary actions of households’ energy saving, to reach goal attainment of local and national environmental goals concerning climate change. In preparation of new innovative and effective ways to reach out to the public in the future, this study aims to identify future options by examining good examples through a case study of four different Swedish municipalities strategies and experiences with campaigns and information incentives. First scientific literature was reviewed to build a foundation of findings that the interviews could rest on. Thereafter preliminary investigation and one interview per municipality were conducted to get a deeper understanding of the information activities and approaches towards energy friendly behavior. The result show most monitoring and evaluation were based on statistics of people reached and the experience of the advisors or the inhabitants through surveys. All energy- and climate advisors agree upon the fact that the economical incentives to motivate energy conservation is dominating opposed to environmental incentives. The groups that are the hardest to reach are for instance individuals with low interest, not susceptible or those who do not speak the language. The good examples identified are represented by e.g. projects targeting the majority of households by monthly challenges, motivating climate friendly behavior and sustainable development in Örebro. Information incentives performed in Eskilstuna through meetings with an Arabic speaking energy advisor. As well as the 600m2 energy exhibition in Jönköping localized in connection to a shopping center.

    Abstract [en]

    Over the past decades a variety of different approaches to realize Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) have been undertaken. This article gives an overview of present and past approaches by classifying and comparing CAES processes. This classification and comparison is substantiated by a broad historical background on how CAES has evolved over time from its very beginning until its most recent advancements. A broad review on the variety of CAES concepts and compressed air storage (CAS) options is given, evaluating their individual strengths and weaknesses. The concept of exergy is applied to CAES in order to enhance the fundamental understanding of CAES. Furthermore, the importance of accurate fluid property data for the calculation and design of CAES processes is discussed. In a final outlook upcoming R&D challenges are addressed.

    Pledge-and-review is an essential pillar for climate change mitigation up until 2020 under the auspices of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. In this paper, we build on a survey handed out to participants at the Seventeenth Conference of Parties in 2011 to examine to what extent climate negotiators and stakeholders agree with existing critiques towards pledge-and-review. Among the critique examined, we find that the one most agreed with is that the pledges fall short of meeting the 2 degree target, while the one least agreed with is that pledges are voluntary. We also find that respondents from Annex 1 parties are more critical than respondents from Non-Annex 1 parties. Negotiators display strikingly similar responses regardless of where they are from, while there is a remarkable difference between Annex 1 and Non-Annex 1 environmental non-governmental organizations. We build on these results to discuss the legitimacy of pledge-and-review.

This thesis gives an overview about the theoretical background of maintainability respectively design for maintenance and presents how companies in the Swedish manufacturing sector are dealing with design for maintenance for their machines. This work discusses the behavior and dealing with the topic design for maintenance from the perspective of the users.In order to answer the research questions of this thesis, a literature review and expert interviews were used. Industrial experts from maintenance departments of Swedish industrial companies answered the interview questions for this research which serve as a foundation for the results and the analysis.The results of the research questions and the conclusion are summarized on the basis of the expert interviews. It enables the reader to know to what extent design for maintenance is considered, how important it is, how communication affects the design and therefore the maintainability and finally a rating of how important a range of maintainability attributes are for them.For the Swedish manufacturing industry design for maintenance is a topic which is considered as important, but a lot of effort in improving maintainability due to the design is not conducted.     Abstract [en]

    Climate change is one of the global challenges of our time. The energy sector is at the focus of the European efforts to combat climate change as it accounts for 80% of the total greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union. Buildings, on the other hand, represent 40% of the energy use and 33% of the total greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union, giving the buildings sector also a key role in the European climate strategy. There are, at the same time, strong interdependencies between the energy and buildings sectors due to the high amount of energy used by buildings and their rising importance as active components in the future energy systems. These interdependencies do not only influence the investment decisions in the energy and buildings sectors, but also the effectiveness of the European climate strategy. Cooperation between the energy and buildings sectors can create beneficial outcomes for the both sectors as well as the environment. It may also encourage innovation, improve the energy performance of buildings, and help achieve a higher penetration of renewable energy into the energy system.

    This licentiate thesis investigates the relationship between the energy and buildings sector at the inter-company level. Presenting the data collected from interviews and a web survey answered by the energy and buildings sectors in Sweden, this thesis examines the level of cooperation between these two sectors, discusses trust issues between stakeholders, presents the factors that negatively impact cooperation, and provides recommendations for the minimisation of these factors.

    The findings presented in this thesis indicate an insufficient level of cooperation between the energy and buildings sectors in Sweden, to which the following factors have been identified to contribute in a negative a way: district heating monopolies; energy efficiency in buildings; building regulations; self-generation of electricity; and energy use patterns. The emphasis on self-interest by stakeholders within the both sectors appears to create trust issues between stakeholders. Accordingly, shifting the focus from self-gains to mutual gains is deemed necessary to improve the cooperation between the energy and buildings sectors. This, however requires significant changes in current practices and business models. It has been identified that the development of smart energy systems that allow a closer interaction between the energy and buildings sectors through flexible energy supply and use would minimise many of the factors that negatively impact cooperation.

    Abstract [en]

    Buildings account for approximately 40% of the energy demand and 33% of the total greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union. Accordingly, there are several efforts that target energy efficiency in buildings both at the European and Swedish levels. The role of buildings in climate change mitigation, however, is not limited to energy savings. Buildings are expected to become key elements of the future smart energy systems by supplying and using energy in a more flexible way. Reducing the energy demand in buildings effectively and shifting the role of buildings in energy systems from ‘passive’ consumers to ‘active’ prosumers, however, require close interaction and cooperation between the energy and buildings sectors.

    Based on the data collected from interviews and a web survey, this doctoral thesis investigates the relationship between the energy and buildings sectors in Sweden at the inter-company level, presents key stakeholder views on smart energy features in buildings and investigates the opportunities and barriers for their adoption in Sweden and Hong Kong.

    The results of this thesis suggest a potential for improving the cooperation between the Swedish energy and buildings sectors, which was identified to be influenced by the following factors: district heating monopolies; energy efficiency efforts in the buildings sector; unsuccessful technology-neutrality of the building regulations; self-generation systems in buildings; and energy use patterns. Shifting the focus from self-gains to mutual gains appears crucial to strengthen the inter-sectoral cooperation, as there are several opportunities for achieving mutually beneficial solutions for the two sectors. This would, however, require significant changes in current practices and business models as well as the introduction of new technologies, which would allow for a more flexible energy supply and use. Accordingly, technologies that target flexible energy use in buildings are considered the most important smart energy features in buildings. The current high costs of technologies, such as home automation and smart electrical appliances, however, create the strongest barrier to adoption. Therefore, the introduction of new business and ownership models and the elimination of the institutional and regulatory barriers are crucial to achieve a wide-scale development of smart energy features in buildings. The results from Hong Kong suggest that institutional and regulatory barriers can particularly create strong hinders to the adoption of technologies.

    It is possible to achieve more sustainable energy systems, where buildings are active elements of networks that supply and use energy in a more flexible and ‘smarter’ way. Cooperation between the energy and buildings sectors can play a key role in the adoption of smart energy features in buildings and pave the way for the smart built environment of the future.

    The development of active buildings through renovation – Is it possible?2013Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    Energy consumption in buildings is an important part of the EU energy policy. Until recently, buildings were considered as passive elements in the electricity network that solely consume electricity. The transformation of the today's grid to a Smart Grid is expected to introduce radical changes to the role of buildings in the energy system. Buildings of today will become an active element in the future electricity network and participate in micro-generation, energy storage, vehicle-to-grid and demand response activities. Sweden constructed a large number of buildings in the 60's and 70's within the so called Million Homes Program, which aimed to provide Swedish citizens with 1 million new living spaces with modern facilities in a 10 years period. Buildings of the program have poor energy efficiencies and are reaching an age where extensive refurbishment emerges as a necessity. Large projects for the renovation of such buildings will be conducted in the future, but there are several barriers to them. Cooperation between building and energy sectors is a necessity for not only refurbishing these buildings to become more energy efficient, but also upgrading them to active buildings. This transformation might require the introduction of new actors and business models to markets.

    The development of smart grids is expected to shift the role of buildings in power networks from passive consumers to active players that trade on power markets in real-time and participate in the operation of networks. Although there are several studies that report on consumer views on buildings with smart grid features, there is a gap in the literature about the views of the energy and buildings sectors, two important sectors for the development. This study fills this gap by presenting the views of key stakeholders from the Swedish energy and buildings sectors on the active building concept with the help of interviews and a web survey. The findings indicate that the active building concept is associated more with energy use flexibility than self-generation of electricity. The barriers to development were identified to be primarily financial due to the combination of the current low electricity prices and the high costs of technologies. Business models that reduce the financial burdens and risks related to investments can contribute to the development of smart grid technologies in buildings, which, according to the majority of respondents from the energy and buildings sectors, are to be financed by housing companies and building owners.

    Buildings are expected to play a key role in the development and operation of future smart energy systems through real-time energy trade, energy demand flexibility, self-generation of electricity, and energy storage capabilities. Shifting the role of buildings from passive consumers to active players in the energy networks, however, may require closer cooperation between the energy and buildings sectors than there is today. Based on 23 semi-structured interviews and a web survey answered by key stakeholders, this study presents the views of the energy and buildings sectors on the current energy challenges in a comparative approach. Despite conflicting viewpoints on some of the issues, the energy and buildings sectors have similar perspectives on many of the current energy challenges. Reducing CO2 emissions is a shared concern between the energy and buildings sectors that can serve as a departure point for inter-sectoral cooperation for carbon-reducing developments, including the deployment of smart energy systems. The prominent energy challenges were identified to be related to low flexibilities in energy supply and use, which limit mutually beneficial cases, and hence cooperation, between the energy and buildings sectors today.

    This paper provides the perceptions of the energy and buildings sectors, municipalities and researchers in Sweden about active buildings that provide smart grid services to their inhabitants. As part of this study, we conducted 23 semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders to present the perspectives of stakeholders that are involved in the development process. Our study shows that there are several barriers to development of active buildings and points out the importance of energy policy mechanisms to support the development. It is necessary to introduce new measures in order to financially encourage the stakeholders and motivate the end-users to invest in smart grid technologies. The elimination of the intersectoral barriers and the promotion of cooperation amongst stakeholders could pave the way for a more efficient and smarter grid.

    Residential energy consumption has a significant share in the final energy use in Sweden. Despite this relationship, it is hard to say that there is cooperation between the building and energy sectors for energy issues in buildings. In the grid of the future, buildings will no longer be a passive element of the electricity system; instead, they will acquire an active role in the operation of the grid. The cooperation between the building and energy sectors could play a key role for a successful development of smart grid technologies in buildings.In this paper, we describe the Swedish case and analyse the barriers to cooperation between the energy and building companies with the help of interviews with several stakeholders. This study showed that there is a demand for new business models in order to accommodate smart grid developments in buildings. Collective projects and new roles that reduce the power differences and barriers between the two sectors could contribute to the cooperation and support the development of future energy services in buildings.

    Buildings account for more than 40 % of the total energy demand in the European Union (EU). The energy sector is responsible for 80 % of the total greenhouse gas emissions in the EU, of which more than a third are emitted as a result of energy use in buildings. Given these numbers and the large potential for energy savings in buildings, the energy and buildings sectors emerged as key contributors to fulfilling the European climate targets. Effective cooperation between these two key sectors can contribute significantly to the efficacy of the European climate strategy. However, there may be factors that negatively impact the relationship between the energy and buildings sectors and put cooperation in climate-friendly developments at risk. Based on 23 semi-structured interviews and a web survey answered by key stakeholders, this paper provides a snapshot of the current level of cooperation between the energy and buildings sectors in Sweden and identifies factors that impact the interdependencies between the two sectors.

    The findings show that the current business models in energy supply and the regulations in place limit the development of mutually beneficial cases between the energy and buildings sectors. This paper contributes to improved knowledge for policymaking that affects both sectors and highlights issues for further study.

    Syfte: Syftet med denna studie är att öka förståelsen för hur ett ledarskap på distans med ett geografiskt avstånd fungerar samt hur kommunikation och arbetsrelation påverkar ledarskap med ett geografiskt avstånd inom bemanningsbranschen.

    Metod: Studien baseras på en kvalitativ forskningsmetod och utgår från en deduktiv ansats. Studiens empiriska referensram framtogs genom insamling av sju semi-strukturerade intervjuer som genomförts med respondenter från fem olika bemanningsföretag.

    Slutsats: Studien har visat att ledarskap på distans har både för- och nackdelar vilket bygger på aspekterna kommunikation, arbetsrelation samt geografisk närhet. Aspekterna kommunikation, arbetsrelation och den geografiska närheten har även visat vara grunden till ett effektivt distansledarskap samt att ett ledarskap på distans ställer högre krav på ledaren och medarbetaren i förhållande till ett fysiskt närvarande ledarskap.

    Metod:                         Uppsatsen är en kvalitativ studie, som har likheter med en explorativ undersökning. Studien har intervjuat en testrespondent och sedan fem ytligare respondenter som studien grundar sina slutsatser på. 

     

    Slutsats:                              Syftet med studien var att undersöka hur samarbete med fokus på kunskapsöverföring mellan kollegor påverkas av ett provisionsbaserat arbetssätt inom mäklarbranschen. Vad studien har kommit fram till är att alla respondenter delar med sig av sin kunskap. Det finns en gemensam bild mellan respondenterna att bra samarbete gynnar kontoret. Bra samarbete bidrar till Bra förutsättningar för kunskapsöverföring. Sammanfattningsvis känner respondenterna inte att deras provision baserade lön påverkar viljan att dela med sig av sina kunskaper. Det framkom under studien genomförande att viljan att dela objekt eller kunder inte lika stark som att dela sin kunskap.

    Syfte: Syftet med undersökningen är att förklara de incitament som leder till att medarbetare väljer att stanna inom organisationen och jämföra det med företagets human resource-arbete för att behålla anställda.

    Metod: Undersökningen var av kvalitativ karaktär. Medarbetare samt human resource-chefer på tre företag intervjuades. Intervjumallen baserades på de valda teorierna samt den sekundära information som varit till underlag till studien. Intervjuerna analyserades genom en innehållsanalys och resultatet presenterades i de teman som varit återkommande i empirin.

    Slutsats: Undersökningen bekräftade den tidigare empirin om hur Generation Y som medarbetare karaktäriseras. Generationen är uppväxta med många möjligheter och är den högst utbildade generationen. Detta ger Generation Y större makt på arbetsmarknaden. Undersökningen visade att medarbetarna inom denna generation var mer drivna av kunskap än av finansiella mål. Att låta medarbetarna växa organiskt är därför ett av de viktigaste incitamenten för ökad lojalitet. Därför bör human resource-avdelningarna nischa sig mot vad Generation Y efterfrågar eftersom de är en majoritet på arbetsmarknaden.

    Because of the shortage of housing that effects Sweden and the increasing demands for sustainable building new solutions for construction needs to be developed.

    One solution to this problem is a loadbearing structure made out of crosslaminated timber. This type of material has a high prefabrication factor wich will shorten construction times and it’s environmental freindly.

    However there is one drawback with this type of loadbearing structure and that is that it’s sensitive to dynamic windforces.

    Until 1994 it was forbidden by law to build higher than two storeys with a loadbearing timber structure. Therefore the development in this area has fallen behind the development of steel and concrete structures.

    Because of the many advantages that this type of structure provides the area needs to be explored, developed and the knowledge must be spread to increase the use of crosslaminated timber structures.

    The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to examine what parameters that effect a buildings dynamic characteristics and how tall it is possible to build with the chosen dimension of the loadbearing structure.

    UNDERSTANDING THE PRODUCTION BEHAVIOUR OF COMBINED HEAT AND POWER PLANTS: A mathematical programming approach2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    This thesis investigates how combined heat and power plants (CHP) produce electricity, with respect to several external factors including outdoor temperature and electricity prices. The purpose is to develop and evaluate a tool, with the aim to increase the understanding of CHP plants electricity production behaviour. This tool resulted in an optimisation model, developed in Python and using the CVXPY package. The objective of the model is to include a system of production units and optimise the production from these by minimising the production costs, while also considering technical constraints. Inspiration for the model was found from a literature review and from interviews with people working in the CHP sector, where the latter also provided historical production data used for validation. When comparing the modelled yearly electricity production with the historical data for the same year, it was found that the model deviated less than 10 percent for the two real district heating systems where the model was implemented. In conclusion, it is seen that the model behaves similar to the actual plants when looking at the electricity production; however, the behaviour of the model is slightly exaggerated with faster changes in the electricity production. Though, the results show that the developed model can be used to enhance the understanding of how CHP plants produce electricity.

    Abstract [en]

    The hindered-settling velocity function for the modelling, simulation and control of secondary settling tanks can be determined from batch tests. The conventional method is to measure the velocity of the descending sludge-supernatant interface (sludge blanket) as the change in height over time in a vessel with constant cross-sectional area. Each such experiment provides one point on the flux curve since, under idealizing assumptions (monodisperse suspension, no wall-effects), the concentration of sludge remains constant just below the sludge blanket until some wave from the bottom reaches it. A newly developed method of estimation, based on the theory of nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations, is applied to both synthetic and experimental data. The method demonstrates that a substantial portion of the flux function may be estimated from a single batch test in a conical vessel. The new method takes into consideration that during an ideal settling experiment in a cone, the concentration just below the sludge blanket increases with time since the mass of suspended solids occupy a reduced volume over time.

    Abstract [en]

    This study reports on an attempt to remove management accounting's calculative practices at the operational level of a Swedish Public Agency. Using a Habermasian perspective, the study shows how the agency has attempted to replace the previous accounting practice, which involved target setting, performance management and measurement with a new leadership philosophy, and accounting practices that aim at generalizing the individual's private interest toward organizational interests. The result is interpreted as an attempt to make the individual responsible for the welfare of the collective in which, in its absence, the kind of validity that accounting's calculative practices enable is very much present as a longing to soothe the anxiety and uncertainty brought about by the responsibility to lead oneself.

    Abstract [en]

    Grassland and farmland degradation is considered as one of the worst environmental and economic threats for China. The degradation process negatively affects food and water security, economy, society and climate changes.

    Photovoltaic water pumping (PVWP) technology for irrigation is an innovative and sustainable solution to curb the grassland degradation. At the same time it can promote the conservation of farmland, especially in remote areas of China. The combination of PVWP technology with water saving irrigation techniques and sustainable management of the groundwater resources can lead to several benefits. These include enhancing grassland productivity, halting wind and rainfall erosion, providing higher incomes and better living conditions for farmers.   

    This doctoral thesis aims to bridge the current knowledge gaps, optimize system implementation and prevent system failures. This work represents thus a step forward to solve the current and future nexus between energy, water and food security in China, using PVWP technology for irrigation.

    Models for the dynamic simulations of PVWP systems, irrigation water requirements (IWR) and crop response to water have been presented and integrated. Field measurements at a pilot PVWP system in Inner Mongolia have been conducted to analyse the reliability of the models adopted. A revision of the traditional design approaches and a new optimization procedure based on a genetic algorithm (GA) have been proposed to guarantee the match between IWR and water supply, to minimize the system failures and to maximize crop productivity and thus the PVWP system profitability and effectiveness.

    Several economic analyses have been conducted to establish the most cost effective solution for irrigation and to evaluate the project profitability. The possible benefits generated by the PVWP system implementation have been highlighted, as well as the effects of the most sensitive parameters, such as forage price and incentives. The results show that PVWP system represents the best technical and economic solution to provide water for irrigation in the remote areas compared to other traditional water pumping technologies. The environmental benefits have been also addressed, evaluating the CO2 emissions saving achievable from the PVWP system operation. The assessment of the feasible and optimal areas for implementing PVWP systems in China has been conducted using spatial analysis and an optimization tool for the entire supply chain of forage production. The results show that the potentials of PVWP systems in China are large. Nevertheless, the feasible and optimal locations are extremely sensitive to several environmental and economic para­meters such as forage IWR, groundwater depth, and CO2 credits that need to be carefully taken into account in the planning process.   

    Although this doctoral thesis has used China as case study, PVWP technology can be applied for irrigation purposes all over the world both for off- and on-grid applications leading to several economic and environmental benefits.

    Abstract [en]

    Grassland degradation is considered as one of the worst environmental and economic problems in China because of the negative impacts on water and food security. The application of the photovoltaic water pumping (PVWP) technology for irrigation is an innovative and sustainable solution to curb the progress of grassland desertification and to promote the conservation of farmland in remote areas. The combination of PVWP with water saving irrigation techniques and the sustainable management of the water resources enhances the grass productivity enabling to halt wind and rainfall erosion and to provide higher incomes and better living conditions for farmers. PVWP systems have been used for more than 40 years especially for drinking purposes, livestock watering and irrigation in small-medium size applications. Nevertheless, several knowledge gaps still exist and system failures still occur, which are mainly bounded to the system design procedure and optimization. The technical and economic feasibilities related to the system implementation, especially effectiveness and profitability, need to be addressed. Moreover, irrigation in remote areas constrained by availability of water resources has to be investigated for a better understanding of PVWP system integration with the environment and for optimization purposes. This thesis is to bridge the current knowledge gaps, optimize system implementation and prevent system failures 

     

    Validation of the models adopted and optimization of the system on the basis of solar energy resources and exploitable groundwater has been performed for a pilot PVWP system in Inner Mongolia. The match between the water supplied through the pumping system and the grass water demand has been studied, and the effects of pumping on the available resources and the crop productivity have been evaluated. The economic analyses have also been conducted in order to establish the most cost effective solution to provide water for irrigation and to evaluate the project profitability. In addition, the CO2 emission reductions by using PV technology have been assessed as well.

     

    It was found that the proper designed PVWP system represents the best technical and economic solution to provide water for irrigation in the remote areas compared to other water pumping technologies, such as diesel water pumping and wind power water pumping due to the high positive net present values and short payback periods.

    Solar home systems (SHSs) represent a viable technical solution for providing electricity to households and improving standard of living conditions in areas not reached by the national grid or local grids. For this reason, several rural electrification programmes in developing countries, including Namibia, have been relying on SHSs to electrify rural off-grid communities. However, the limited technical know-how of service providers, often resulting in over- or under-sized SHSs, is an issue that has to be solved to avoid dissatisfaction of SHSs’ users. The solution presented here is to develop an open-source software that service providers can use to optimally design SHSs components based on the specific electricity requirements of the end-user. The aim of this study is to develop and validate an optimization model written in MS Excel-VBA which calculates the optimal SHSs components capacities guaranteeing the minimum costs and the maximum system reliability. The results obtained with the developed tool showed good agreement with a commercial software and a computational code used in research activities. When applying the developed optimization tool to existing systems, the results identified that several components were incorrectly sized. The tool has thus the potentials of improving future SHSs installations, contributing to increasing satisfaction of end-users.

    Abstract [en]

    Many cities around the world have reached a critical situation when it comes to energy and water supply, threatening the urban sustainable development. From an engineering and architecture perspective it is mandatory to design cities taking into account energy and water issues to achieve high living and sustainability standards. The aim of this paper is to develop an optimization model for the planning of residential urban districts with special consideration of renewables and water harvesting integration. The optimization model is multi-objective which uses a genetic algorithm to minimize the system life cycle costs, and maximize renewables and water harvesting reliability through dynamic simulations. The developed model can be used for spatial optimization design of new urban districts. It can also be employed for analyzing the performances of existing urban districts under an energy-water-economic viewpoint.

    The optimization results show that the reliability of the hybrid renewables based power system can vary between 40 and 95% depending on the scenarios considered regarding the built environment area and on the cases concerning the overall electric load. The levelized cost of electricity vary between 0.096 and 0.212 $/kW h. The maximum water harvesting system reliability vary between 30% and 100% depending on the built environment area distribution. For reliabilities below 20% the levelized cost of water is kept below 1 $/m3 making competitive with the network water tariff.

    Grassland is of strategic importance for food security of China because of the high number of livestock raised in those areas. Grassland degradation due to climate change and overgrazing is thus regarded as severe environmental and economic threat for a sustainable future development of China. Photovoltaic water pumping (PVWP) systems for irrigation can play an important role for the conservation of grassland areas, halting degradation, improving its productivity and farmers' income and living conditions. The aim of this paper is to identify the technically suitable grassland areas for the implementation of PVWP systems by assessing spatial data on land cover and slope, precipitation, potential evapotranspiration and water stress index. Furthermore, the optimal locations for installing PVWP systems have been assessed using a spatially explicit renewable energy systems optimization model based on the minimization of the cost of the whole supply chain. The results indicate that the PVWP-supported grassland areas show high potential in terms of improving forage productivity to contribute to supplying the local demand. Nevertheless, the optimal areas are highly sensitive to several environmental and economic parameters such as ground water depth, forage water requirements, forage price and CO2 emission costs. These parameters need to be carefully considered in the planning process to meet the forage yield potentials.

    Abstract [en]

    Grassland plays a key role for the food security of China because of the large number of livestock raised in those areas. Thus, grassland degradation due to climate change and overgrazing is considered as one of the most severe environmental and economic threat for the future sustainable development of China. Photovoltaic water pumping systems for irrigation can play a fundamental role for the conservation of grassland areas. This paper investigates the geospatial distribution of the technically suitable grassland locations for the implementation of photovoltaic water pumping systems. The technically suitable grassland areas were taken as starting point to assess the optimal locations. The assessment of the optimal locations was conducted using a spatially explicit optimization model of renewable energy systems based on the cost minimization of the whole forage supply chain. The results indicate that the photovoltaic water pumping systems provide high potential for improving forage productivity, contributing to meet the local demand. The optimal areas are highly sensitive to several environmental and economic parameters such as increased forage potential yield, forage management costs, forage water requirements, ground water depth, forage price and CO2 price. Most of the optimal areas are selected when the market forage price ranges from 300 to 500 $/tonne DM, indicating that the forage produced using PVWP technology for irrigation is already competitive compared to the imported forage.

    The exploitation of solar energy in remote areas through photovoltaic (PV) systems is an attractive solution for water pumping for irrigation systems. The design of a photovoltaic water pumping system (PVWPS) strictly depends on the estimation of the crop water requirements and land use since the water demand varies during the watering season and the solar irradiation changes time by time. It is of significance to conduct dynamic simulations in order to achieve the successful and optimal design. The aim of this paper is to develop a dynamic modelling tool for the design of a of photovoltaic water pumping system by combining the models of the water demand, the solar PV power and the pumping system, which can be used to validate the design procedure in terms of matching between water demand and water supply. Both alternate current (AC) and direct current (DC) pumps and both fixed and two-axis tracking PV array were analyzed. The tool has been applied in a case study. Results show that it has the ability to do rapid design and optimization of PV water pumping system by reducing the power peak and selecting the proper devices from both technical and economic viewpoints. Among the different alternatives considered in this study, the AC fixed system represented the best cost effective solution.

    Abstract [en]

    Photovoltaic water pumping (PVWP) and wind power water pumping (WPWP) systems for irrigation represent innovative solutions for the restoration of degraded grassland and the conservation of farmland in remote areas of China. The present work systematically compares the technical and economic suitability of such systems, providing a general approach for the design and selection of the suitable technology for irrigation purposes. The model calculates the PVWP and WPWP systems sizes based on irrigation water requirement (IWR), solar irradiation and wind speed. Based on the lowest PVWP and WPWP systems components costs, WPWP systems can compete with PVWP systems only at high wind speed and low solar irradiation values. Nevertheless, taking into account the average specific costs both for PVWP and WPWP systems, it can be concluded that the most cost-effective solution for irrigation is site specific. According to the dynamic simulations, it has also been found that the PVWP systems present better performances in terms of matching between IWR and water supply compared to the WPWP systems. The mismatch between IWR and pumped water resulted in a reduction of crop yield. Therefore, the dynamic simulations of the crop yield are essential for economic assessment and technology selection.
