    Abstract [sv]

Adolescent Children of Alcoholics on Disclosure: Support, and Assessment of Trustworthy Adults2011In: Child and Adolescent Social Work Journal, ISSN 0738-0151, E-ISSN 1573-2797, Vol. 28, no 2, p. 133-151Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to describe adolescent children of alcoholics’ (COA) perspectives on disclosure and support. COA reported assessing the trustworthinessof adults before disclosing their home situation. Before disclosure theymay have raised their own level of consciousness, told a peer, told an adult stranger,or in-directly communicated with an adult. These findings are the result of interviewswith 27 adolescents attending support groups for COA in Sweden. Adults, who ask questions, listen carefully and cooperate with the child/adolescent, and who are knowledgeable about families with alcohol problems, are considered as supportive and trustworthy. The adolescents reported psychological, communicative, environmental, and generational aspects of the disclosure process.

Elderly immigrants in Sweden: 'Otherness' under construction2006In: Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, ISSN 1369-183X, Vol. 32, no 8, p. 1341-1358Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Informed by a social constructionist approach, this article reviews and evaluates the research literature on elderly immigrants in Sweden, shedding light on how a specific category is created and comes to be regarded as a social problem. There is a pervasive 'problematisation' of elderly immigrants in Sweden. The paper argues that a social category of 'elderly immigrants' has been constructed among those concerned with elderly care and policy, even though there is ample evidence that the elderly group is exceptionally diverse and that, apart from a non-Swedish background, the various constituent groups have little in common. They have nonetheless been consistently approached as if they were an easily identifiable and homogeneous social category posing an unusual challenge for elderly-care planners and providers. Thus, as a socially constructed 'problem, these elders seem to have become yet another 'Other' in Swedish society.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine how the staff of non-profit and municipal sheltered housings experience the opportunities and limitations of the organisations as well as how they experience cooperation. The study has a qualitative method in which eight semistructured interviews were conducted with four employees from two non-profit sheltered housing and four employees from two municipal sheltered housing. A survey from the National board of health and welfare (2013) shows that in the year of 2013 71 % of Sweden's sheltered housing were non-profit and 21 % were municipal sheltered housing. These sheltered housings had different conditions in helping battered women, as shown by previous research. The results of this study show that the staff from the non-profit sheltered housing to a greater extent experienced that they were free in designing their work and giving the women a social context but could be limited in short-term agreements with the municipality. Staff from the municipal sheltered housing felt safer with the organisational form however they could experience limitations regarding that the decision-making process were ineffective and that they could not design their own work to the same extent. Staff from the municipal sheltered housing to a greater extent experienced that they had good conditions for cooperation, however all of the interviewees experienced some limitations regarding cooperation.

Communicative behavior in family conversation: Comparison of amount of talk in Finnish, SwedishFinnish, and Swedish families2006In: Journal of Pragmatics, ISSN 0378-2166, Vol. 38, no 11, p. 1795-1810Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The present study is a part of a project aiming at studying whether or not there are differences in the communicative behavior among three Nordic groups: 20 Finnish families in Finland, 20 Finnish families living in Sweden, and 20 Swedish families in Sweden. Families with a 9- to 13-year-old target child were compared with regard to amount of talk during family mealtimes. The Swedish families differed distinctly from the Finnish and SwedishFinnish ones in that they produced more talk. The two latter groups behaved quite similarly even though the SwedishFinnish families had lived in Sweden for 13-25 years. Particular emphasis was placed on studying pauses, which were remarkably shorter and less frequent in the Swedish families. The study showed that the contribution by different family members to conversation was quite similar in all the groups, with a dominance of the mother.

ICF-CY as a Tool in Elementary School: An interview study of teacher experiences and perceptions of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health for Children and Youth in their Work in Elementary School2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    AIM OF THE STUDY

The aim of this study was to explore if ICF-CY can support teachers in elementary schools in their work in promoting children’s health, development and learning. A further aim was to bring forward what teachers experience as benefits and disadvantages in using the classification.

    METHOD

After an introduction to ICF-CY, six elementary school teachers filled in questionnaires based on ICF-CY for 94 children. In conjunction with this, the teachers were interviewed about their experiences and perceptions of the work.

    RESULTS

The results show that through their work with the ICF-CY questionnaires the teachers experienced an active process of reflection and learning. They obtained new perspectives which gave them a more holistic picture of children’s situations than they had before. The teachers found the ICF-CY to be a useful instrument to support work within the school environment towards individualized education, based on the children’s possibilities. They also felt that the importance of cooperation between the persons around each child became clearer by using ICF-CY because no single individual is in possession of all the necessary information about the child’s situation, but by combining different perspectives it is possible to establish a common ground on which education and intervention can be based. At the same time, however, the teachers found the classification somewhat overly comprehensive and in some ways complicated. Therefore they felt that an introduction to the ICF-CY is essential before adopting it.

    CONCLUSIONS

The teachers’ experience of seeing each child’s situation more clearly after conducting a classification by using the ICF-CY questionnaires indicates that ICF-CY should be introduced to parents, teachers and other professionals working with education and intervention for children. The way in which assessment carried out with ICF-CY as an instrument affects the process of education and intervention remains to be examined.

    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative interview study which examines the foreign-born women's experiences of integration based on living in a segregated area in Södertälje. The study aims also to examine how women perceive their identity of living with different cultures. Semi-structured interviews were conducted at the home of the women. Previous research highlights, among other things, that the language skills, education, community are important aspects of the experience of integration and discrimination is an obstacle to it. The result showed that the Södertälje area does not constitute an obstacle to women's opportunities for integration. The women experience language, education and community as significant aspects of its integration and discrimination constituted temporary obstacle. The results further show that women perceive their identity between the Swedish culture and their culture of origin. Equality and rights was somewhat women including set value of the Swedish culture. Controlling and high expectations were attitudes from their own family culture they disowned. The analysis used an intersectional perspective and integration theory which supports the study's themes. The study concludes that there is still an ongoing form of discrimination against immigrant women, which impedes their integration. It is important not to regard immigrant women as a homogeneous, but a heterogeneous group, with individual abilities and resources.

The significance of play and the environment around play2006In: Early Child Development and Care, ISSN 0300-4430, Vol. 176, no 2, p. 207-217Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to increase the knowledge and understanding of play and its significance, to illuminate play and its significance to the individual and the social interplay, and also to compare the environment around play today with adult memories of environments in childhood. The purpose of the study is also that the result and the content can lead to deeper knowledge about play and its significance for the individual and social interplay. Personnel, parents and children from the age of three to five years were interviewed, drew a scene of a play and gave a description of play. The significance of play for the social interplay that this study shows is that it is fun, children and adults appreciate and learn from each other, and it is a way to be together and get insight into how the other thinks in play.

En studie om äldre invandrare i Västerås kommun2007Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [sv]

Varför stannar killarna kvar i projektet?

    Abstract [en]

The aim for this study is to examine how social workers construct clients with substance abuse problems and their support needs. The aim is also to investigate the impact of the client’s gender towards the social workers. In order to answer the aim, the study’s focus is to clarify what affects social workers assessments as well as any differences between men and women. The selection of the study consists of eight social workers who work with assessments regarding support needs for men and women with substance abuse problems in Sweden. Data has been collected using a vignette and semi-structured interview. The findings show that assessments are affected by manual work, client’s life situation, social workers own values, laws and norms of society. The findings also show that social workers offer different assistance depending on whether the client is female or male. The assessments are based on individual conditions, but the choice of assistance is determined by expectations that men and women have different needs. For clients to be offered the right help, it is important that social workers and clients exchange knowledge with each other.

    Abstract [en]

Youth criminality is a important topic nowadays and the aim of this study is how the social services and the police collaborate between eachother to handle the problems caused by youth criminality in Eskilstuna kommun. 10 qualitative interviews were used to gather material. The interview candidates were either working with the social services or the police, or were involved in the collaboration work. The results from this study showed that the municipality work with collaboration in different ways, for example with methods as ‘Sociala insatsgrupper’ och SSPF The result also shows that collaboration occur on a structural level. The study illustrate what encourage and prevent collaboration. Communication, roles and coordination are examples of what encourage. Lack of communication and resources, but also secrecy prevent collaboration. Based on the result, it is concluded that there are several important organisations in the municipality for a functioning collaboration. An extended perspective had therefore been interesting for further studies.

Konsten att samverka: - rektorer och socialsekreterares upplevelser om samverkan2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Previous research shows a constant increase of mental illness among children and young people since the 1980s and the statutory assignment of the student school health team includes to work preventive in order to promote the students' health. Through seven semi-structured interviews with professionals within the student school health team, this study aims to investigate how they perceive their ability to work health promotive and preventive regarding mental illness. The study has taken place in a medium sized city in the middle of Sweden and the participants are exclusively women. The result of the study shows that there are both obstacles and opportunities in the work against mental illness. The professionals' action space and the support of the organization is emphasized as acceptable and proves to be a base for the student health team to be able to fulfill its mission. There are however some shortcomings in collaboration, job descriptions and evaluations which complicates a successful work. The result thereby shows that there is a development potential in the work of the student school health team. Continued research within the subject could give the professionals better opportunities to complete their assignment and actively work to promote the mental health of children and young people.

This study explores the content of issues discussed at planning meetings, and the relation between content and activities implemented in everyday interventions. Longitudinal data from five families and their C-YHS-teams were used. Data were analyzed using conventional content analysis. The results illustrate a process with a high degree of correspondence between families' concerns, experienced problems, the formal decisions and the activities they generated. Concerns were focused on the future, and related actions focused on supporting adults in the environment, mostly the parents, thus indirectly relating to the child. Problems were focused on the current situation, and to a larger extent concerned actions directly related to the child. Although a family-centred service, interventions focused on the proximal environment, may be underreported.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims at investigating gender, gender interaction and sexuality among homosexual women with Assyrian belonging. The focus has been on describing their experiences of being homosexuals as well as the difficulties they face from an intersectional perspective. The result portrays that in the research and among the respondents there is generally a cultured image of heteronorms that cannot be deviated. Individuals who deviate from cultural norms are considered abnormal. The respondents suggests that her sexual orientation is limited to her from an intersectional perspective because homosexuality is invisible in gender-gender interactions and sexuality where there are also different power relationships. The challenges experienced by respondents were the implementation of the cultural norm in society as well as intersectionality overriding and subordination maintained in interplay between sex and sexuality in their daily lives. Consequently the respondents lives in different roles to avoid losing contact with relatives and avoiding the hegemony of society.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate how social services in a county in central Sweden work preventively against honor-related violence and oppression. The study aims to investigate the obstacles, challenges and preventive opportunities that social workers face in the work. Based on a qualitative data collection method in which six social secretaries were interviewed, the study has shown that the majority of respondents have a critical view towards that the problem of honor is cultured and investigated solely from cultural features. The study also showed that the respondents felt that there was a lack of competence in the social service regarding honor matters and emphasized that there is a great need for excellence in education on the subject and also that there was a great need for aimed education in fields that focus on honour related violence and oppression. It was found that respondents disagreed on whether the social service´s work is preventing honor-related violence and oppression. Some of the socialworkers considered that the social service`s work is preventing and some disagreed. The respondents also emphasized the importance of increased cooperation between the social services and the school in preventing the work against the violence.

Children as Research partners in a Research circle2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This presentation is about a Swedish study in which two groups of young people are actors, one group as research partners and another group as respondents in a study about young people’s participation. A model of the research circle, based on the Scandinavian study-circle tradition with democratic ideals, was created with young people invited as research partners in the research circle by academic researchers. The innovative design of the study included young people in the knowledge construction about youth participation. The young research partners formulated the research questions and implemented a ‘Youth survey’ among other students in secondary and upper secondary schools. Respondents in the survey are 100 students (15-18y) from mainstream schools and special schools for the Hard-of Hearing. The aim of the study was to define young people’s perspectives on participation in school-life. The young people in the study identify to have friends, being able to exert influence and understanding as central aspects of participation. They describe that the experience of participation depend on their opportunities to enact agency, responsibility, and control. Access to a free and supportive communicative context, with the agency to contribute to the interaction and decision-making is key when promoting young people’s participation in school. In this presentation, the innovative research model, as well as the report written by the adolescents in the research circle will be presented.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to examine how interaction between different activities can be organized.      The background of the essay highlights why collaboration is becoming common, and what it means for professionals involved in it. Collaboration is becoming common because the government insists on collaboration in practical work and that it is referred to in legal text. Collaboration is a comprehensive change to something unknown which could lead to fear of interaction within professionals who practice it.          The method used was qualitative and the empirical data were obtained through semi-structured interviews. Five respondents participated, three from one collaborative work and two from another. They are professionals in various professions involving humanitarian work in collaboration with each other. Results were analyzed through profession theory, collaboration theory, the user perspective, projects as labor as well as previous research.      The results show that there are various factors that inhibit and/or promote collaboration and conditions that may promote and/or inhibit collaborative success and efficiency. An example of a factor that can inhibit or promote interaction depending on how it is managed is the professional language, while management is a condition that promotes collaboration.

Clients’ perceptions of contact with professionals within Health Care and Social Insurance offices2003In: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health, ISSN 1403-4948, E-ISSN 1651-1905, Vol. 31, no 4, p. 275-282Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aims: An increasing number of people interact with professionals within healthcare and social insurance offices during periods of sick leave due to musculoskeletal disorders. Knowledge of clients' perceptions of such contact is scarce. This study analysed clients' perceptions of theircontact with professionals within healthcare and social insurance offices. Methods: A cohort study was conducted in the municipality of Linköping, Sweden. Participants were all citizens who in 1985 were aged 25-34 years and had at least one new sick-leave spell due to back, neck, or shoulder diagnoses exceeding 28 days (n = 213). In 1996, 11 years after inclusion, a questionnaire about perception of contact withprofessionals, self-perceived health, and mental health was administered. Register data on sickness absence and disability pension from 1985-96 were also obtained. Results: Factor analysis indicated the existence of three dimensions of contact with professionals: supportive treatment, distant treatment, and empowering treatment. Women perceived their contact with both social insurance officers and healthcare professionals as more supportive than did the men. Respondents with disability pensions perceived their contact with social insurance officers as more supportive and empowering than persons without disability pensions. Respondents with mental health problems perceived their contact with both types ofprofessionals as more distant. Respondents with neck/shoulder diagnoses perceived their contact with healthcare professionals as more empowering than respondents with low back diagnoses. Conclusion: There was a relationship between clients' perceptions of contact withprofessionals and the sex, disability pension, diagnosis, and mental health of clients.
