Ekologisk status på Stäholmsbäcken: Enligt EU:s vattendirektiv2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

DJ-indexets resultat var sämst och fick därmed styra, one out – all out.

How Do Organizations Expand their ERP beyond its Core Capabilities: A case study at ABB Robotics2008Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Researchers and practitioners alike believe it is not until an organization expands their ERP system that they will reap the full benefits of it. The question of how to expand an ERP system beyond its core is investigated in this thesis. It is done by reviewing ERP research and comparing this with empirical data collected in a case study made at a focal company. The focal company is a member of the business network Automation Region. The case describes how the focal company moved from using an ERP system to where they now have an e-procurement system connected to their core ERP and has developed a sales process system which might become their e-commerce system in the future to take control of their supply chain as a whole. It shows how a process thinking view has aided them in putting the customer in focus and incorporating parts of the TQM philosophy. The conclusion reveals that it is crucial to understand and work with processes and there are motives and obstacles to consider when expanding an ERP system. It furthermore uncovers the importance of giving this expansion of the ERP system, the move beyond the core ERP, a proper name such as Extended ERP, eERP. It is important because then, when we understand the eERP fully, we will be ready for the next level of business which may very well be ERP2 or Second Generation ERP which incorporates entire business networks.

Genus genom ögat: En innehållsanalys av genusrepresentation i populär animerad film2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Gender Encounter during Interactive Marketing2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Gender encounter during interactive market is indeed a dynamic aspect of a marketing that

affects its’ outcome which is to seal sales. The dynamic implication gender encounter has brought

about the researching of both same gender and cross gender encounter in this paper. The division

and independent investigate of same gender and cross gender encounter had given a clear motive

on the gender preference among male and female students towards same/cross gender encounter.

In actualizing this purpose, quantitative approach was use while the realist is the explanatory grid

which constructed arguments in a deductive manner. In fulfilling the quantitative approach

criterion, an online survey was carried out among students at Mälardalen University. Online

questionnaire were distributed through a convenient sampling method and 389 valid responses

were analyzed. The results shows majority of students prefers same gender encounter to cross

gender. Therefore for an interactive marketing section to be successful as regards to gender

differences, same gender encounter should be considered.

Impact of Culture on Mobile Phone Purchasing A Comparison between Thai and Swedish Consumers2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 60 poäng / 90 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

“Mobile phones as a communication technology fits into culture rather than imposes on a culture” (Xin, 2006).Therefore, the main purpose of this research was to investigate and to understand the impact national culture has on mobile phone buyer behaviour of Thai and Swedish consumers. The research was also conducted to identify whether there was a significant cultural difference of buying behaviour for these two cultures when purchasing mobile phones.

Hofstede’s cultural dimensions (individualism/collectivism and power distance) was addressed in order to examine if culture influences Thai and Swedish consumers when purchasing a mobile phone.

In order to examine the difference between Thai and Swedish consumers, a data analysis was conducted through the SPSS statistical program using an Independent Sample T-test and Pearson Correlations. The questionnaires were distributes to both Thai (70 sets) and Swedish (70sets) students in the University of Malardalen. The findings indicated that there is a significant difference between Thai and Swedish consumers in term of mobile phone purchasing behaviour as far as Hofstede’s cultural dimensions.

A major contribution to this study is that it will provide an insight into the differences in culture between Swedish and Thai consumers, the Eastern and Western cultural divide and how culture influences mobile phone purchasing behaviour.

The findings will also assist managers in mobile phone organizations to manage the dynamics of culture through time as well as to enhance their communications and promotional strategies within an overall marketing strategy. Incorporating culture into their overall marketing and communications strategies will enable organizations to meet customer needs and expectations, sustain and increase growth along with market share and to maximize profitability.

    Abstract [sv]

    Pt-Co catalyst-coated channel plate reactor for preferential CO oxidation2011Inngår i: International journal of hydrogen energy, ISSN 0360-3199, E-ISSN 1879-3487, Vol. 36, nr 5, s. 3778-3788Artikkel i tidsskrift (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

To achieve preferential CO oxidation, a PteCo catalyst-coated channel plate reactor (CCPR)was produced via conventional mechanical milling and catalyst coating. The proposedreactor performed well under a wide range of operating temperatures and providedsatisfactory results at low temperatures (CO concentrations of 1e10 ppm at 413e443 K and1e50 ppm at 413e453 K). In the proposed CCPR, significant deactivation was not observedduring continuous operation for 100 h. In addition, the reactor exhibited excellent toleranceto undesirable conditions, including reaction temperature runaway and feedingstream failure. Characterisation results indicated that the catalytic activity of the proposedCCPR was high due to the formation of Pt3Co intermetallic compounds and nanoscalemetal particles. The capacity per channel of the proposed CCPR was approximately 50e100times greater than those of conventional microchannel reactors; thus, problems associatedwith excessive reactors were significantly reduced. In general, the results indicated thatCCPR has great potential in the small-scale production of hydrogen for fuel cells.

    Transesterification of Pistacia chinensis oil for biodiesel catalyzed by CaO–CeO2mixed oxides2011Inngår i: Fuel, ISSN 0016-2361, E-ISSN 1873-7153, Vol. 90, nr 5, s. 1868-1874Artikkel i tidsskrift (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates the use of CaO–CeO2 mixed oxides as solid base catalysts for the transesterificationof Pistacia chinensis oil with methanol to produce biodiesel. These CaO–CeO2 mixed-oxide catalysts wereprepared by an incipient wetness impregnation method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Ramanspectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The cerium improvedthe heterogeneous catalytic stability remarkably due to the defects induced by the substitution of Ca ionsfor Ce ions on the surface. The best catalyst was determined to be C0.15-973 (with a Ce/Ca molar ratio of0.15 and having been calcined at 973 K), considering its catalytic and anti-leaching abilities. The effects ofreaction parameters such as the methanol/oil molar ratio, the amount of catalyst amount and the reactiontemperature were also investigated. For the C0.15-973 regenerated after five reuses, the biodiesel yieldwas 91%, which is slightly less than that of the fresh sample. The test results revealed that theCaO–CeO2 mixed oxides have good potential for use in the large-scale biodiesel production.

    Characterization of flue gas in oxy-coal combustion processes for CO2 capture2012Inngår i: Applied Energy, ISSN 0306-2619, E-ISSN 1872-9118, Vol. 90, nr 1, s. 113-121Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Oxy-coal combustion is one of the technical solutions for mitigating CO2 in thermal power plants. For designing a technically viable and economically effective CO2 capture process, effects by coals and configurations of flue gas cleaning steps are of importance. In this paper, characterization of the flue gas recycle (FGR) is conducted for an oxy-coal combustion process. Different configurations of FGR as well as cleaning units including electrostatic precipitators (ESP), flue gas desulfurization (FGD), selective catalytic reduction (SCR) deNOx and flue gas condensation (FGC) are studied for the oxy-coal combustion process. In addition, other important parameters such as FGR rate and FGR ratio, flue gas compositions, and load of flue gas cleaning units are analyzed based on coal properties and plant operational conditions.

Bioenergy polygeneration, carbon capture and storage related to the pulp and paper industry and power plants2013Inngår i: Biomass as Energy Source: Resources, Systems and Applications / [ed] Erik Dahlquist, Taylor & Francis Group, 2013, 1, s. 163-176Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The use of energy is approximately 140 000 TWh per year globally. It is then interesting to note that biomass production is approximately 270 000 TWh/year, or roughly twice as much. This shows that biomass is not a marginal energy resource but more than enough to cover all our needs for both energy and food, if just the biomass is used efficiently. There has been a lot of discussion about using food for energy. This is quite relevant, and if we look at all resources like agricultural and forestry waste, the need to use food for energy is not needed. We can cover all our needs anyhow. The resources we have available and some other aspects like using the energy efficiently is covered in this book. One way of using energy efficiently is to use waste biomass or cellulosic materials in bio refineries, where production of fibers and products from fibers is combined with production of most chemicals we need in our daily life. This includes clothes, soap, perfume, medicines etc. Conventional pulp and paper applications are also covered. But it also includes bio-fuel for vehicles and even fuel for aviation is covered. It also includes production of heat, cool and electricity. That is, biomass can cover all our needs. The difficulty is to use the resources efficiently without harming the productivity long term. This book has the aim to give facts and inspiration to professionals like engineers and researchers, students as well as those working for different type of authorities or societal organizations.

Design & Implementation of Integrated Management System2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 60 poäng / 90 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The main aim behind this project of Design & Implementation of Integrated Management System was an exertion to bring three management systems under one roof, based on ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 & BS 18001:2007 guidelines at Ecoil Company. This has been done by analyzing the three standards in detail and by bringing similar requirements among the system as single requirement with addition to other requirements. For example the standards EMS 14001 and OHSAS 18001 has requirements in addition to the basic requirements that are required by all three standards. This similarity helped in integration of the three frameworks. The framework of all the three systems works on the basis of PDCA cycle of continual improvement that is the key to all three standards. This is another reason which has enabled us to combine three systems into ONE Integrated Management System.

IMS provides the framework to the organization in which all the processes, activities are then carried out within the brackets of policies and guidelines towards the Health, Safety, environment & quality. It also helps in positioning the organization as HSE responsible and providing a framework to respond the HSEQ related inquiries of the customers, stockholders and other interested parties. Ecoil, the company is new and number of employees is very less so our team has suggested the suitable timeframe for IMS implementation is six month. The work has been carried out under the guidelines of international standards of ISO9001, ISO14001 and BS18001 systems. First we have conducted Gap analysis, but as the company is new so Gap Analysis did not help us so much. For the ECOIL we have to start the design phase of the systems from the scratch. In the designing phase we have visited the ECOIL plant and study thoroughly in connection with the basic and necessary things need to be improved, hazard identifications and objective setting. Later, series of required steps have been taken; first of all we have reviewed the existing preliminary documents and modified their policy by aligning it with the requirements of IMS. The second main task was to identify the IMS objectives and targets in order to align all the activities. Consequently, HSE Hazards were recognized, objectives related to IMS have been identified with the help of Ecoil Management. We have prepared manuals for Ecoil containing system & operational procedures, designed different forms for record keeping, which was the most time taking activity of this project, delivered HSEQ awareness sessions and competence trainings to the employee.

Now the next step was the pre-assessment audit of the implemented system. As the company needed draft system first due to the scarce resources to avoid any kind of risk which is appreciated approach. So the draft IMS system has been made ready for ECOIL, no doubt they can implement it in shorter possible time, as the foundation of system has been set, the Management understands and vision is clear so implementation on grounds will not take immense time in the presence of proper resource. Ecoil is committed and doing that.

The results of implementing IMS on ground could be seen after ONE year at least in the form of much improvements and systematic running of everything. However, several suggestions could be made to the Ecoil’s management to put their all efforts on the track of continual improvement w.r.t Quality, Health and Safety and Environment in order to achieve Win-Win ambiance.

    Intensification of biodiesel synthesis using metal foam reactors2010Inngår i: Fuel, ISSN 0016-2361, E-ISSN 1873-7153, Vol. 89, nr 11, s. 3450-3456Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This study presents a technology for continuous and high-efficiency alkali-catalyzed biodiesel synthesis using a metal foam reactor combined with a passive mixer. A metal foam reactor with higher pore density produces smaller droplets that result in higher efficiency of biodiesel synthesis. Compared with conventional stirred reactors, the time for high methyl ester conversion can be shortened remarkably by the use of metal foam reactors. Experimental results reveal that a metal foam reactor of 50 pores per inch exhibits an energy consumption per gram biodiesel of 1.01 J g-1, merely 1.69% and 0.77% of energy consumption of the zigzag micro-channel and conventional stirred reactors, respectively. Moreover, biodiesel yield per reactor for the metal foam reactor is approximately 60 times that of the zigzag micro-channel reactor, thus overcoming the problem of numbering up an excessive number of reactors in the application. These results indicate the great potential of metal foam reactors in small-fuel biodiesel processing plants for distributive applications.

TRIPS Agreement’s Impact on the Accessibility of Pharmaceuticals in the Developing Countries: Developed Game-Theoretic Model2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Problem:

The problem under consideration is the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) agreement called Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and its impact on equal access to essential drugs in the least developed countries. Especially the countries of sub-Saharan Africa lack such access. Moreover, these countries are the ones where severe diseases like AIDS/HIV, tuberculosis and malaria are widely spread over the population. The authors focus also on patents and their obligatory length imposed through the articles of TRIPS agreement.

    Purpose:

The purpose of the thesis is to describe and analyse the impact of global trade regulations (TRIPS in particular) on the accessibility of essential drugs in developing countries, and to come up with a possible solution as the way of coping with the problem is concerned. The investigation includes detailed description of solutions accomplished by Brazil and India, and their importance for the least developed countries, in terms of importing generic pharmaceuticals from these.

    Method:

Qualitative method was used in order to obtain data from interviews with citizens of Botswana, Ghana, Ethiopia and South Africa for better understanding of the situation in these countries. Furthermore, the theories included in the theoretical background of this paper were gathered through deep research in the field of studies regarding Intellectual Property protection and World Trade Organization’s agreements and other legal acts.

    Results:

The result of the analysis is a model developed from the Game-Theoretic Model, and called Developed Game-Theoretic Model. It is a tool which the least developed countries can use while negotiating prices of medicines with pharmaceutical companies, having the possibility of importing the pharmaceuticals from other countries manufacturing the patented product under compulsory licensing.

Effect of the Chinese acquisition on the brand image of Volvo Cars2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Volvo is one of the most visible and famous symbols of Swedish engineering industry. After the recent world economic crisis the Chinese-based Geely Holding Group became the new owner of Volvo Cars. The question is whether the acquisition affects the image of the brand, and if so what is the character of this effect. Thus, this thesis provides the insight in the situation and attempts to give the answer to this question. It identifies the tendencies and provides an example of what changes in the brand image of Volvo have already occurred and what can be expected.Purpose:The purpose of this research is to identify, describe and analyze the effect that the acquisition by Geely Holding Group had on the brand image of Volvo.Method:Within this research a survey was conducted. The issues of concern regarding the change of the Volvo brand image were identified through literature study and observations in the specialized automobile on-line discussion panels. Based on the collected information and theoretical background, a questionnaire was designed and placed in the Volvo discussion forums in three countries – USA, Germany, and Great Britain. The total of 172 responses were received. The obtained data was processed statistically and theoretically on the basis of the theoretical framework.ResultsThe obtained results demonstrate that the brand image has been affected by the acquisition, and the character of this effect varies depending on the aspect of the brand image. Such attributes of Volvo, as safety, quality, and design have been influenced positively, whereas the associations with environment and family are found to be affected in a negative way. The image of a typical Volvo owner has been blurred too.

The Absence of IKEA - A Study into the South African Furniture Market2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Title: The Absence of IKEA - A Study into the South African Furniture Market

     Research questions:

    - Is the South African furniture market favourable for IKEA?

    - Would it be beneficial for IKEA to have production there?

    - How could IKEA promote itself if they were going to enter the South African market?

    Purpose of the research:

The purpose of the paper is to identify possible opportunities and threats for IKEA in the South African furniture market by describing the market from a furniture company’s perspective. The paper will also point out strengths and weaknesses on the South African market that can be helpful for Swedish furniture firms that are interested in establishing business in South Africa.

    Methodology:

Different method approaches were used including; observations, a survey among consumers and interviews with the Swedish Trade Council, a marketer and furniture companies. The information gathered through these approaches was complemented with previously published data.

    Conclusion:

It was discovered that the investment climate in South Africa is favourable and that there is a market for IKEA. However, considering the current condition of the market, we argue that the market is not favourable enough from a manufacturing perspective and therefore not beneficial for IKEA to set up production. The biggest threat identified is the furniture store Mr Price because of its similar concept. To begin with IKEA should focus on brand building followed by in store marketing.

En studie om varumärkesidentitet ochvarumärkesimage inom utbildningssektorn2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Nivå: Kandidatuppsats i företagsekonomi, inriktning marknadsföring, 15 poäng

Författare: Danijela Vukovic, Marielle Vägermark, Shiman Zarifnejad

    Handledare: Cecilia Erixon

2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

PCB i byggnader: Handlingsplan för saneringsarbetet i Eskilstuna kommun2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Polychlorinated biphenyls, PCBs, were used in elastic sealants in buildings during the years1956-1973. Studies of PCB have revealed that it is harmful for humans and animals, especially water-living predators and other top-predators. It is also a persistent organicpollutant and remains in the environment for a very long time. To reduce the levels of PCB inthe environment, it has to be removed from the buildings. According to Swedish law, theproperty holder has to decontaminate sealants with a PCB level of 500 mg/kg or above. Themunicipalities are the supervising authority and they shall follow up the decontaminations toassure that the PCB has been properly removed from the buildings. The PCBdecontaminationin Eskilstuna municipality has not been a prioritised work, hence, there isPCB left in the buildings which need to be removed. To facilitate the decontamination-work,a plan of action has been developed. This plan will assist the inspector in prioritising thedifferent cases.
