    Abstract [sv]

    Genom att arbeta med informationsdesign har jag i detta arbete tagit fram ett förslag på en mobilapp tänkt att användas till projektet Spaden i Eskilstuna. Spaden är ett kommunalt projekt där invånare har möjlighet att påverka småskaliga byggprojekt runtom i Eskilstuna kommun. Målet med min gestaltning är att lägga fram ett förslag på ett lättanvänt, intuitivt verktyg som medborgare kan använda sig av för att lämna synpunkter till kommunen. Den mobila plattformen i mitt förslag erbjuder en ökad insyn i Spaden-projekt i den bemärkelse att invånare kan lämna synpunkter ”ute i fält”, på den plats byggprojektet planeras.

    Jag har i huvudsak använt mig av textdesign för att ge exempel på hur information kan presenteras och utformas i appen. För att få mitt förslag att framstå som genomförbart var det även nödvändigt att beröra ett flertal omkringliggande områden, såsom gränssnitt, utvecklingskostnad, vissa tekniska aspekter och hur appen kan marknadsföras.

    Detta examensarbete skrevs i samarbete med Stadsbyggnadsförvaltningen i Eskilstuna kommun. Både kvalitativa och kvantitativa metoder har använts för att ta fram en basis till mitt designförslag.

    Abstract [en]

    Climate changes together with the increased scarcity of raw material and natural resources place pressure on politicians, industry and society to optimize energy utilization and material recovery. The recycling and sorting of the solid waste and the need for long and short term storage is therefore steadily increasing as is the development of different types of storageand transportation of biofuels. Many of these stores are or will be located close to settlements, town districts and buildings of high monetary value which will increase the potential risk with associated fires and their effect on public health. Methods for the handling and storing organic materials are many, but whether after a short or long time, these all have a propensity to end up with self ignition. Sweden has increased the number of incinerators for solid waste by almost 40 % during the new millennium. Further, numerous upgrades of old incinerators have been carried out and a large volume of storage of waste fuels is needed. This paper presents experience from storage of waste fuels, risks of fire, and issues associated with fire fighting, emissions, and financial impact. Discussions of future trends for the storage of organic material, waste and biofuels as well as the risk of energy and material loss and environmental pollution by smoke and danger for health are included as well as the need for further knowledge and research.

    Determination of Uncertainty of Different CFD Codes by Means of Comparison with Experimental Fire Scenarios2009Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

    This article will summarise the evaluation of four CFD software codes (CFX, FDS4, SMAFS and SOFIE). Evaluation was performed by means of comparing the simulation data with experimental scenarios. The scenarios were chosen to represent scenarios frequently assessed using firesafety design based on performance. The greatest difficulty during validation of CFD-codes is to find well documented relevant experiments. It is true that many large scale experiments including smoke spread have been published but many of them are not described sufficiently and are therefore impossible to use for validation. It is very unusual that data on reproducibility and repeatability is available. After an extensive discussion between the participants in the project five scenarios were chosen. Scenarios 1A (large room with vents), and scenarios 1B1 and 1B2 (corridor with vents) were well documented experiments (repeatability) with ceiling vents and ceiling jets performed earlier at SP in Borås. Scenario 2 is a tunnel fire taken from an experimental study in Boston, US. Scenario 3 is an atrium fire taken from an experimental study in Japan. Lack of well documented fires in retail premises lead us to perform a series of tests in 1/2 scale, 4.1 and 4.2 at SP in Borås. Scenario 5 is an experimentalstudy from Australia including smoke spread from a fire room to an adjacent corridor and a room. The conditions for the simulations included information about the scenarios given above. No information about experimental results was available until the results from the simulations had been sent in to the project manager. The intention was to imitate the working conditions for a consultant as far as possible when using a CFD-simulation to estimate fire safety. In this manner the simulations are dependent on many factors such as the CFD-code used, judgement of input data of the scenarios done by the operator, operator skill etc. The results from the evaluation of the CFD codes showed that the simulation results generally were a good description of the experimental fires studied, but that limitations and specific properties of the different codes, together with the operator factor, can strongly influence the results. The detailed results of all comparisons are given in the final report of the project. It was not possible to include these detailed evaluations in this conference paper but these results are available in the main report as well as in future scientific articles.

    have been evaluated. This poster will focus on

    the evaluation of four CFD software codes.

    The demands of environmental effects in today’s companies have been increasing more and

    more. To be able to withstand customers, cooperatives and government demands the ISO

    14001 certification should not be neglected.

    In January 2007 the general management of SAS decided to introduce an environmental

    management system for SAS Tech. The work which has been carried out is a part of the

    certification process of ISO 14001 which will be completed by the end of year 2009.

    The aim is to create auditroutines for the company in order to be able audit ISO 14001

    standard internally which is a demand to get certified and to keep the certification in the

    future. A schedule has been done which audits different part of the standard at every audit

    during one year. The purpose of internalauditing is to be able to confirm that the

    management system and the defined work procedures are fullfilling the demanded effect. In

    order to simplify work with the audits a checklist is also created for the whole standard.

    The auditroutine documents will be inserted among the documents for the environmental

    management system for SAS Tech, this´ll later on be certified externally of Bureau Veritas.

    The article introduces the Prime Mover Matrix as a conversation piece that will help management build strategic innovation capacity and gain desired influence on industrial standards and thus power. After all, just because a company calls itself innovative and invests in R&D does not mean it is actually innovative. To be strategically innovative means that a company deliberately builds its technical innovative capacity and business innovative capacity in relation to the influence of other actors’ actions and innovations. By doing this, a company will be able to increase its influence on industrial standards and gain the necessary power to reach its objectives. It is a relative position towards a moving target, which is why companies must continuously change through learning. This means that management needs help to reflect on how their own company’s innovative capacity compares to their competitors, and they must unceasingly steer their capacity towards the desired innovation position. Today, we lack intuitive and usable tools that will facilitate strategic conversations on how to best invest for desired innovation capacity. In order to fill this void, this article proposes the Prime Mover Matrix: a model that functions as a conversation piece for triggering an assessment of an industry’s technical, business, and prime movers.

    Abstract [en]

    Oxy-coal combustion has different flue gas composition from the conventional air-coal combustion. The different composition further results in different properties, such as the absorption coefficient, emissivity, and density, which can directly affect the heat transfer in both radiation and convection zones of utility boilers. This paper numerically studied a utility boiler of oxy-coal combustion and compares with air-coal combustion in terms of flame profile and heat transferred through boiler side walls in order to understand the effects of different operating conditions on oxy-coal boiler retrofitting and design. Based on the results, it was found that around 33vol% of effective O2 concentration ([O2]effective) the highest flame temperature and total heat transferred through boiler side walls in the oxy-coal combustion case match to those in the air-coal combustion case most; therefore, the 33vol% of [O2]effective could result in the minimal change for the oxy-coal combustion retrofitting of the existing boiler. In addition, the increase of the moisture content in the flue gas has little impact on the flame temperature, but results in a higher surface incident radiation on boiler side walls. The area of heat exchangers in the boiler was also investigated regarding retrofitting. If boiler operates under a higher [O2]effective, to rebalance the load of each heat exchanger in the boiler, the feed water temperature after economizer can be reduced or part of superheating surfaces can be moved into the radiation zone to replace part of the evaporators

    Abstract [en]

    This study aims to identify business opportunities created by digitalization. The purpose is to evaluate how these opportunities could be utilized, by identifying areas of improvements in the service portfolio.

    This study is a qualitative case study with an abductive approach, mainly using semi-structured interviews to collect data. The case study was conducted at ABB Industrial Automation Services, where the new Collaborative Operations Center was studied. The data was analyzed from a systems thinking perspective, using a Rich Business Framing sessions as an evaluation platform.

    The results illustrate how difficult the transition towards a more digitalized industry is. This stems from how different customers have reached different levels of automation in their plants. Therefore, the service portfolio must be flexible and agile, in order to cater to the different customer segments. This case study identified three customer segments, one focusing on internal activities, while the other two consist of customers that have reached different levels of maturity within digitalization. Different value potentials were identified, leading to a proposal of a service portfolio. The systems thinking approach was then evaluated, leading to the conclusion that it is a useful tool, but a time-consuming process.

    Abstract [en]

    Although the vast majority of vehicle drivers are sober, drunk driving remains to be a major contributor to fatal accidents. Massive deployment of unobtrusive breath alcohol sensing systems could potentially save tens of thousands of lives worldwide every year by preventing drunk driving [1]. The work reported here is ultimately aiming at such a system. The technical performance of the present sensing system with respect to automotive requirements is summarized, and new results towards unobtrusive breath alcohol determination within vehicle compartments are presented. Breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) can be determined unobtrusively if (i) the sensing system provides real-time signals with adequate accuracy corresponding to the local concentrations of both alcohol and a tracer gas, e g CO2, (ii) the dilution of the breath is not excessive in relation to background concentrations, (iii) the sensor location can be seamlessly integrated into the interior of a vehicle cabin. All three of these aspects are addressed in the present paper. More than a hundred prototypes based on infrared spectroscopy were fabricated and subjected to automotive qualification tests in the full temperature range -40 … +85?C. In the majority of tests, adequate performance was noted. Measures are now being taken to fill remaining performance gaps. Test results with human subjects were positive and in accordance with expectations with respect to physiological variations. In-vehicle tests showed that for the best sensor position, passive breath samples allowed BrAC to be determined at a resolution of 2-4% of the US legal limit, providing proof-of-principle for unobtrusive testing. Nevertheless, vehicle integration remains to be the major technological challenge to the objective of deployment on a large scale of unobtrusive driver breath alcohol determination. The feasibility of unobtrusive breath alcohol determination in vehicles, and adequate performance of a sensor system based on infrared spectroscopy have been experimentally demonstrated. The alcohol sensing system may advantageously be integrated into vehicles, and may also be combined with other technologies to monitor driver impairment.

    Storage Techniques for Municipal Solid Waste, Frequency of Fires, and Their Related Emissions2010Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

    The objective of this study was to gather the missing information regarding storage techniques (i.e., loose compact, hard compact, cylindrical bales, rectangular bales) and self-ignition in storage sites for organic recyclable and solid-waste fuels from a life-cycle perspective. There is a need to compile and analyze information regarding self-ignition events because there is a lack of such studies. Its importance is evident from the fact that millions of euros are lost every year in Sweden because of spontaneous fires. These fires cause loss of valuable material and injuries to people, and they are also associated with intense environmental pollution, in particular in the form of smoke and water pollution. This study is based on a questionnaire survey among the members of the Swedish waste management association (Avfall Sverige), whose members service 95% of the Swedish population. The response to the survey was 60%. A total of 96 major surface fires have been reported in the past 10 years at storage sites. 74% of these 96 fire incidents were due to self-ignition, 11% were due to known causes other than self-ignition and 15% were due to unknown reasons. In reference to the type of storage, 50% of these 96 fire incidents took place at sites that store both household and industrial waste, 20% at sites that store only industrial waste, and 30% at sites that store household, industrial, and agricultural waste. Regarding the most frequent cause of fire at any storage site, 33% of respondents relate the fire incidents with extreme hot weather conditions, 8% of respondents report that fire incidents at their storage site are mostly an aftereffect of rainfall, 13% relate the fire incidents with cold weather in December, and 46% of respondents experienced the fire incidents throughout the whole year. Furthermore, detailed statistics were collected regarding different storage techniques followed for municipal solid waste (MSW) in relation to contents and final destination processing plant. It was found that loose compact storage is the most popular way of storing MSW, followed by cylindrical bales. Based on data covering the last 10 years, the average annual amount of emissions of dioxins is (upper/lower bound) TCDD 0.03/0.12 g, PAH 0.98/3.7 tons, PCB 1.66/6.31 g, Hg 16.51/62.59 g, and VOC 18/68 tons from MSW storage fires in Sweden. Estimated emissions of dioxins from fires in waste storage sites correspond to emissions from the incineration of about 0.017 million tons of waste (Avfall Sverige data for 2008). In total, Sweden incinerated 0.35 million tons per annum during the period studied.

    Syfte: Syftet med studien är att undersöka fortsättningsvisanvändarinvolvering inför kommunens webbutvecklingsprocessen, kan hjälpa att få idéer och förbättringsmöjligheter. Detta för att kunna hjälpa kommunen att utveckla sina webbplattformar och nå sina mål. För att begränsa studien, har författaren valt att enbart studera och förstå unga vuxna i åldern18–25 år.

    Metod: Kvalitativ forskning med deduktivt synsätt. Design thinking används för att empatisera med också generera nya idéer och förbättringsmöjligheter. Semi-strukturerade intervjuer och workshopsanvändes för att samla in data.

    Slutsats: Resultat från empiri har belysttydligthur unga vuxna upplevde kommunen webbplattformar. Unga vuxna har gett varierande och ibland samma synpunkter kring hur de upplevde kommunens digitala kanaler vid användningen av kommunens digitala kanaleroch hur de skulle vilja utveckla plattformar. Några hade lite problem med texterna som kommunen publicerar. Några andra upplevde inte detta, utan de hade annat problem. Alltså det var några som sa att det upplevde problem när de sökte jobb, och information på kommunens hemsida.

    Några andra lärde sig först vid praktiskanvändningav kommunens digitala plattform.Unga vuxnas svar och förslag på utvecklingsmöjligheter varieradeberoende på hur problem uppfattades. Då samtliga deltagarna under den här studien har påvisat sina behov och förbättringsmöjligheter, rekommenderas användarinvolverade metoder att användas i en kommunal kontext som utvecklar kommunala webbplattformar.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper gives an overview of the tunnel fire research, both experimental and theoretical work with the exception of computer modelling. The overview shows that the critical velocity for longitudinal flow in a tunnel is the single most well investigated fire phenomenon found in the tunnel fire research literature. This knowledge has reached a high level but there are still some areas that need to be investigated further. For example, very little work has been done on backlayering of smoke upstream a fire and cross-sectional effects on heat release rates, temperatures, flame lengths, fire spread and toxic conditions.

    Extensive work using model scale tunnels has contributed with new information and clarified many phenomena but the lack of good large scale experimental data is and will be a key issue in near future. This concerns mainly the correlation between heat release rate and maximum ceiling temperatures, the influence of ventilation on maximum heat release rate and fire growth rate and fire spread in and between vehicles. The extensive theoretical work which has been conducted concerning the effects of ventilation on heat release rates needs to be further investigated in large scale tests.

    Abstract [en]

    An analysis, based on two different series of model scale tests, of the effects of ventilation on maximum heat release rate and fire growth rates is presented. In both model scale test series, wood cribs of different porosity, size and numbers were used.   Both ambient free burn tests and tests inside a model-scale tunnel were performed. The tunnels varied from 0.3 m to 0.6 m in width and from 0.2 m to 0.4 m in height. The longitudinal velocity varied between 0.22 m/s and 1.12 m/s.   

    The tests show that for a higher porosity wood crib and higher velocities than 0.45 m/s, an increasing ventilation rate increases the maximum heat release rate in the range of 1.3 to 1.7 times the value measured outside the tunnel under ambient conditions. For the lower porosity wood crib and higher velocities, the corresponding increase in the maximum heat release rates was 1.8 and 2.2, respectively.  For the case with a velocity of 0.67 m/s, the linear fire growth rate increased by a factor of 5–10 times compared to the free burn case, depending on the dimensions of the tunnel cross-section.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper, we will present the collaboration between Malardalen University and the local industry in the context of our two master programs in computer science, Master in Software Engineering and Master in Intelligent Embedded Systems. Within both programs, there is an extensive cooperation with national giants such as ABB, Bombardier, Ericsson, SAAB and Volvo, as well as strategically important, high competence, SMEs. We will describe how we use our industrial partners to assure the quality and industrial relevance of our educational master programs. For example, they provide us sharp industrial equipment, give guest lectures at our courses, organize industrial visits, provide internships and theses for our students, and, whenever possible, give employment to our students. The education method that we use is Problem-Based Learning (PBL), which implies that large parts of the programs are performed in project form. The projects are supplied by our industrial partners, and are solved in collaboration with them. The aim with sharp industrial projects is to prepare students for work in industry directly after the completion of their education, and to make our students are highly competitive on the national and international job market, both in the industry as high-skilled expert and in the academia as researchers or PhD students.

    Abstract [en]

    In industrial manufacturing rigorous testing is used to ensure that the delivered products meet their specifications. Mechanical maladjustment or faults often show their presence as deviations compared to a normal sound pro-file. This is the case in robot assembly, the selected application domain for the system. Manual diagnosis based on sound requires extensive experience, and the experience is often acquired through costly mistakes and reduced production efficiency or quality loss caused by missed faults. The acquired experience is also difficult to preserve and transfer, and often lost if personnel leave the task of testing and fault diagnosis. We propose a Case-Based Reasoning approach to collect and preserve experience. The solution enables fast experience transfer and leads to less experienced personnel required to make more reliable and informed testing. Sounds from normal and faulty equipment are recorded and stored in a case library together with a diagnosis. Addition of new validated sound profiles continuously improves the system’s performance. The system can preserve and transfer experience between technicians, reducing overall fault identification time and increases quality by reduced number of missed faults. The original sound recordings are stored in form of the extracted features to-gether with other experience, e.g. instructions, additional tests, advice, user feedback etc.

    In 1983 a “Grand Old Man” of Ballistic Science, Dr. Robert J. Eichelberger, wrote1 : ”Ballistic technology is generally considered a mature technology – as it should be after centuries of intensive attention of some of the finest scientific minds of the world.” He predicted that increased understanding of relevant physics and chemistry and development of mathematical techniques and computer models would be key elements in the future of ballistics and weapon system design. These predictions were very accurate! But to-day’s developments and those of the foreseeable future go beyond this. Warheads and ballistics – interior, exterior and terminal – are very dependent on the use and properties of energetic materials – propellants and explosives – for their functioning. New, potentially very powerful substances such as the N5+ and N5– ions and metallic hydrogen were created in labs. Air-breathing propulsion – ramjets etc. - and efficient use of the high combustion energy of some metals adds to the performance increase potential. Increased use of intelligence, computers, sensors and fuzing in weapons, munitions and armours has added another dimension to the efficiency achievable. New high-performance materials have also meant great increases in effects and protection potential. Developments possible in the next 20 years may have similar effect on warfare as the revolution in weapons, munitions and armour that occurred in the late 19th century. The statement that ”Ballistic technology is generally considered a mature technology” is no longer true. Any nation that will abstain from following the developments closely and exploiting their advances will run the risk both of having weapons, munitions and protection that prove inadequate and of making grave mis-investments.

    During the twentieth century, few breakthroughs occurred in energetic materials. Hexanitrobenzene was judged only 25 years ago to be the theoretically best explosive. Hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) later proved to be 20% better than octogen and 6% better than hexanitrobenzene. In the early 1990s, FOA (National Defence Research Establishment, Sweden) synthesized CL-20, enabling Sweden to purchase it from the United States. In 1995, an effective synthesis for ammonium dinitramide (ADN) was found. ADN gives much lower signature in rockets than ammonium perchlorate (AP), higher performance, and low environmental impact. Diaminodinitroethene (FOX-7) is a high explosive with lower sensitivity than TNT and similar performance to hexogen (RDX). N-guanylurea dinitramide (FOX-12) has properties similar to NC but is very insensitive and inherently more thermally stable. An FOI effort to synthetize new high energy density materials started with tetrahedral tetraazatetrahedrane (N4), sponsored by the U. S. DoD/DARPA. This nonnatural substance was modeled by numerical quantum mechanics, and promises to have three to four times the energy of octogen. So far, the existence of this molecule has not been verified; but efforts continue. Other nitrogen clusters, such as N8 or polymeric Nx, promise even higher yields. The pentazolate ion (N- 5) was successfully made at FOI by laser synthesis. With the N+ 5 counterion, synthesized by the U. S. Air Force Research Laboratory, it could form a very energetic all-nitrogen molecule. The step in energy density from octogen to N4 is much greater than the change from black powder to high explosives, such as picric acid or trinitrotoluene, occurring in the 1870s. That change most certainly caused a complete revolution in warfare methods and weapons technology.

    The product introduction process plays an important role in development of new products and launching them to the market on-time with a high quality. The product introduction process has been studied primarily in highvolume manufacturing industries and therefore, the influences of the characteristics of low-volume manufacturing industries on the product introduction process has not been investigated. The aim of this paper is to study challenges and potentials of information management during the product introduction process in low-volume manufacturing industries by a multiple-case study in two Scandinavian low-volume manufacturing companies. The paper contributes in covering the knowledge gap about the information management during the product introduction process in low-volume manufacturing industries.
