The launching and establishment of a social problem: An analysis of the debate on Swedish national level gymnastics in Dagens Nyheter 2012-2013.2015In: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, E-ISSN 2002-066X, Vol. 52, no 1, p. 61-79Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In 2012 Sweden's largest daily newspaper, Dagens Nyheter, published a number of articles on the state of affairs in Swedish national level gymnastics. In these articles, ex-gymnasts, coaches, parents and physicians stepped forward and testified about recurrent wrongdoings and abuse against young (particularly) female gymnasts. In response to the criticism, the accused coaches and representatives of the Swedish Gymnastics Federation downsized or dismissed the criticism as inaccurate. This being said, and using discursive psychology and a qualitative design, this article sheds light upon this debate by viewing it as a struggle between a hegemonic discourse of "the goodness" of sports, on the one hand, a number of unfavorable and negative testimonies of the state of affairs in Swedish national level gymnastics on the other. More concretely, this struggle has been analyzed with regard to the discursive and rhetoric resources the involved parties' used to pursue their claims about the state of affairs in Swedish national level gymnastics and the impact these resources had for their credibility and legitimacy. Questions were: Who is entitled "to spell out" their view on the state of affairs within Swedish national level gymnastics? What is mediated and how? How are descriptions and accounts about reality constructed as credible and factual? It is concluded that social problems are launched via co-production; in this process, the gymnastics community, the research community, single individuals, and the media - were co-actors.

A narrative study of newly graduated registered Swedish nurses' establishment in the profession and the portrayal of a healthcare organisation2019In: Journal of Health Organization and Management, ISSN 1477-7266, Vol. 33, no 4, p. 413-425Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the participants talk about their experiences as newly graduated nurses, managers and nursing colleagues in the context of "newcomers' establishment in the profession" and to identify how they portray the healthcare organisation in their narratives. Design/methodology/approach A narrative approach is used to reveal and illustrate three perspectives on the topic "new-comers' establishment". In total, 14 interviews are conducted with 4 managers, 4 nursing colleagues and 6 newly graduated registered nurses. The focus of this study is how a healthcare organisation embraces and retains newly graduated registered nurses and how this is perceived. Findings The newcomers' establishment is facilitated by an orientation programme and an orientation period, individual support provided by managers and colleagues, and the creation of trust to boost confidence in nursing situations. The organisation is portrayed as struggling with high workloads, nursing shortages, high levels of responsibility and showing concern and an interest in the newcomer. The parties criticise the university for not teaching the most basic knowledge, thereby revealing the existence of a theory-practice gap. Originality/value The research shows how building trust amongst the organisation's members is essential for creating a satisfying workplace and the retention of newly graduated registered nurses. Empirical descriptions of newly graduated nurses, managers and nursing colleagues experiences of "newcomers establishment" are rare, which is why the description of such "establishment" in this research increases the value of the paper.

Children helping to co-construct a digital tool that is designed to increase children’s participation in child welfare investigations in Sweden.2022In: Qualitative Social Work, ISSN 1473-3250, E-ISSN 1741-3117, Vol. 21, no 2, p. 367-392Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

How do children (aged 6-12 years) understand and make use of a digital tool that is under development? This article builds on an ongoing interdisciplinary research project in which children, social workers (the inventers of this social innovation) and researchers together develop an interactive digital tool (application) to strengthen children's participation during the planning and process of welfare assessments. Departing from social constructionism, and using a discursive narrative approach with visual ethnography, the aim of the article is to display how the children co-construct the application and contribute with "stories of life situations" by drawing themselves as characters and the places they frequent. The findings show that the children improved the application by suggesting more affordances so that they could better create themselves/others, by discovering bugs, and by showing how it could appeal to children of various ages. The application helped the children to start communicating and bonding when creating themselves in detail, drawing places/characters and describing events associated with them, and sharing small life stories. The application can help children and social workers to connect and facilitate children's participation by allowing them to focus on their own perspectives when drawing and sharing stories.

    Abstract [sv]

Impact of Alternative Maternal Demand-Side Financial Support Programs in India on the Caesarean Section Rates: Indications of Supplier-Induced Demand2016In: Maternal and Child Health Journal, ISSN 1092-7875, E-ISSN 1573-6628, Vol. 20, no 1, p. 11-15Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: This paper examines two state-led public–private demand-side financial support programs aiming to raise hospital delivery rates in two neighbouring Indian states—Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The national Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) was complemented with a public–private partnership program Janani Sahayogi Yojana (JSaY) in Madhya Pradesh in which private obstetricians were paid to deliver poor women. A higher amount was paid for caesarean sections (CS) than for vaginal deliveries (VD). In Gujarat state, the state program Chiranjeevi Yojana (CY) paid private obstetricians a fixed amount for a block 100 deliveries irrespective of delivery mode. The two systems thus offered an opportunity to observe the influence of supplier-induced demand (SID) from opposite incentives related to delivery mode. Methods: The data from the two programs was sourced from the Departments of Health and Family Welfare, Governments of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, India. Results: In JSaY program the CS rate increased from 26.6 % (2007–2008) to 40.7 % (2010–2011), against the background rate for CS in Madhya Pradesh, of only 4.9 % (2004–2006). Meanwhile in CY program in Gujarat, the CS rate decreased to 4.3 % (2010–2011) against a background CS rate of 8.1 % (2004–2006). Conclusions: The findings from India are unique in that they not only point to a significant impact from the introduction of the financial incentives but also how disincentives have an inverse impact on the choice of delivery method.

Thailand and Sweden as welfare regimes: examples from the healthcare sector2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The characteristics of a welfare state is largely related to social justice and welfare reforms. This is mainly in the form of legislation, economic transfers and services that help to ensure that all citizens receive a basic economic security and access to services such as health care and nursing. A key factor for this is a country's economy and political will. In Thailand, there was a strong economic growth during the 1970s. The corresponding development in Sweden took place in the mid 1940's. Health and welfare is the main area of collaboration between the Ministry of Health in Thailand and Mälardalen University. The aim of this study is from a welfare perspective, a comparison of the similarities and differences in the basic elements of the health care systems in Thailand and Sweden.

The study is based on analysis of national policy documents from Thailand and Sweden as well as from United Nations Agency.

Both countries emphasize health and welfare from a social rights perspective in constitutions and other laws. E.g. the Thailand Constitution of 2007 states that a person shall enjoy an equal right to receive standard public health service, and the indigent shall have the right to receive free medical treatment from State's infirmary. The Swedish Constitution recognizes that the personal, economic and cultural welfare should be the fundamental goal of public activity through, among other things promote social care and social security, and good conditions for health. In the Swedish Health Care Act of 1982, the goal is a good health and care on equal terms for the entire population.

Both Thailand and Sweden have a national system of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), which is defined according to World Health Organization (WHO) as ensuring that all people can use the promotive, preventive, curative, rehabilitative and palliative health services they need, of sufficient quality to be effective, while also ensuring that the use of these services does not expose the user to financial hardship.

In terms of selected indicators shows for the year 2012 that the Total health expenditure (THE) % of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) amounts in Thailand 4% and 10% in Sweden, general government expenditure on health as % of GDP are 3% resp. 8%, prevention and public health services are 9 resp. 4%, physician density per 1,000 population 0.3 resp. 3.9. The proportion of beds at public/private hospitals are 78/21% resp. 99/1%.

The example from the health care system shows that the two countries have legislation that emphasizes health as a social right and a public financing of health care. In terms of specific indicators, there are wide variations in terms of costs to society and the individual including prevention and public health services, access to doctors and proportion of beds in public and private hospitals.

Is leisure time sitting associated with mortality rates among men diagnosed with localized prostate cancer?2020In: European Journal of Cancer Prevention, ISSN 0959-8278, E-ISSN 1473-5709, Vol. 29, no 2, p. 134-140Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVE: Being physically active postdiagnosis has been associated with lower rates of prostate cancer progression and mortality, but studies investigating postdiagnostic time spent sitting are lacking. We aim to study the association between leisure time sitting after a prostate cancer diagnosis and overall and prostate cancer-specific mortality. METHODS: Data from 4595 men in Sweden, diagnosed with localized prostate cancer between 1997-2002 and followed-up until the end of 2012, were analyzed. Time spent sitting during leisure time postdiagnosis was categorized into <2, 2-3, 3-4, and >4 h/day. Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) of postdiagnosis leisure time sitting and a joint variable of sitting time and exercise, and time to overall or prostate cancer-specific death. RESULTS: The results showed no significant associations between postdiagnostic leisure time sitting and overall or prostate cancer-specific mortality rates. When the joint effect of both sitting and exercise time was considered, borderline significantly lower mortality rates for overall and prostate cancer-specific mortality were seen among participants that sat the least and exercised the most compared to the reference category with participants sitting the most and exercising least (HR: 0.75; 95% CI: 0.56-1.00 and HR: 0.61; 95% CI: 0.36-1.05, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: No significant association between leisure time sitting and mortality rates among men diagnosed with localized prostate cancer was seen. This study does not support an association between leisure time sitting per se; however, being physically active may have beneficial effects on survival among men diagnosed with localized prostate cancer.

The role of a behavioural medicine intervention in physiotherapy for the effects of rehabilitation outcomes in exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (ECRA) - the study protocol of a randomised, controlled trial2017In: BMC Cardiovascular Disorders, ISSN 1471-2261, E-ISSN 1471-2261, Vol. 17, no 1, article id 134Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: To help patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) benefit from the positive health effects attained by exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR), adherence to these programmes according to international guidelines is important. Strategies to increase adherence to exercise-based CR are mainly an unexplored area. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of a behavioural medicine intervention in physiotherapy, containing goal-setting, self-monitoring and feedback, with the aim of improving rehabilitation outcomes for exercise-based CR, compared with usual care. Methods: This is a randomised, controlled trial. A total of 160 patients with CAD will be included consecutively at the Coronary Care Unit at a university hospital in Sweden. Patients are randomised 1:1 using sealed envelopes to usual care or a behavioural medicine intervention in physiotherapy, in addition to usual care for 4 months. Outcome assessment at baseline, 4 and 12 months includes submaximal aerobic capacity (primary outcome), exercise adherence, muscle endurance, level of physical activity, biomarkers, anxiety and depression, health-related quality of life, patient enablement and self-efficacy (secondary outcomes). Discussion: This is the first study to evaluate the role of an integrated behavioural medicine intervention in exercise-based CR in the effects of rehabilitation outcomes. The results of this study will provide valuable information about the effect of these interventions in exercise-based CR and it has the potential to inform and assist in further treatment in secondary prevention for patients with CAD. Trial registration: The study include all items from the World Health Organization Trial Registration Data Set. Trial registration number: NCT02895451, 2016-08-16, retrospectively registered.

Engagement and disengagement in school: A quantitative study examining behavioural and emotional engagement and disengagement in school among 6th graders in Sweden2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Education affects both the health and personal development of an individual, and higher levels of education are associated with better health and higher socioeconomic status. There are gender differences in school performance in Sweden, with girls performing better than boys. Engagement can influence positive school performance, whereas disengagement can lead to alienation and indifference toward school and affect school performance negatively. The aim of the study was to examine the associations between behavioural and emotional engagement and disengagement, and if there are gender differences in engagement and disengagement, among children in 6th grade in Sweden. The study was conducted through quantitative method using secondary cross-sectional data. The result showed a positive association between behavioural engagement and emotional engagement (rho=0.84, p<0.001) and between behavioural and emotional disengagement (rho= 0.74, p<0.001). Girls had statistically significant higher behavioural and emotional engagement than boys, whereas boys had higher behavioural and emotional disengagement than girls. In conclusion, the levels of behavioural and emotional engagement are associated, as are the levels of behavioural and emotional disengagement. There are gender differences, where girls are more likely to be engaged in school compared to boys and boys are more likely to be disengaged in school compared to girls.

Changes in sexual behavior among high-school students over a 40-year period2021In: Scientific Reports, E-ISSN 2045-2322, Vol. 11, no 1, article id 13963Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate sexual behavior, contraceptive use, risk factors as well as sources of sex information among first-year high-school students in Sweden. Secondly, to assess differences between genders and study programs as well as changes over a 40-year period. A repeated cross-sectional survey was conducted in two cities. A questionnaire comprising 77 items was used. The study population consisted of 415 students (63.4% females). The median age of sexual intercourse was 15 years. In total, 37% had had sexual intercourse, compared to 56.3% in 2009 and 45% in 1999 (p < 0.001), and the proportion of students who had their first sexual intercourse was not influenced by gender. More students in vocational programs (46.3%), compared to theoretical (33.3%), had experience of at least one sexual intercourse (p = 0.019). The same extend of contraception use at first and latest intercourse was reported, compared to previous studies. Forty-nine percent were mostly informed about sex from the internet, while in previous years, magazines, family and youth clinics were the main information sources. Comparing over time, students were in general less sexually experienced and less engaged in non-penetrative sex and physical intimacy. These findings call for a new approach, when designing sex and relationship education and health-care counseling in adolescents.

Carers’ ambivalence in conflict situations with older persons2013In: Nursing Ethics, ISSN 0969-7330, E-ISSN 1477-0989, Vol. 20, no 2, p. 226-237Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to illuminate the meaning of professional carers’ experiences in caring situations when a conflict of interest arises with the older person receiving care. The findings reveal the complexity of the carers’ ambivalence when facing a conflict of interest, weighing between the older persons’ right to self-determination and external demands. The carers are alone in their ambivalence and the conclusion is that they need help and support to be more present in the encounter. The implication for this study is a person-centred practice, and to focus on people as interdependent on support carers to maintain older people’s right to self-determination in the relationship.

The aim of this study was to illuminate the meaning of older people’s dependence on caregivers’ help, and of their opportunity to make independent decisions.

Background. Throughout the world, the older population is growing, and in Sweden, the system of care for older people is currently undergoing change. Older people in the need of care are expected to live at home for as long as possible.

Design.A qualitative and life world approach was used.

Methods. Audio-taped interviews were conducted with twelve older persons living at home, dependent on daily municipal home help service. A phenomenological hermeneutic method was utilised to disclose the meanings of lived experiences.

Finding. The findings revealed three themes : being facilitated to make one’s own decisions, being hindered from making one’s own decisions, struggling for vs. resigning oneself to losing the opportunity to make one’s own decisions.

The comprehensive understanding revealed that as older people become more dependent on caregivers’ help, their opportunity to self-determine is challenged and this is stressful for them.

Conclusion. The older persons assess their opportunity to self-determine differently, depending on who they are as a person. The caregivers need an awareness of this, and further research is needed to gain knowledge and understanding of how caregivers can improve the way they support and enhance older people’s opportunity to decide for themselves.

Implications for practice. The findings revealed older persons need to exercise more self-determination and caregivers’ need for knowledge to enable this. Further, it indicates a move towards a person-centred approach to focus on persons as individuals and see them as interdependent. The findings contribute to improvements in similar contexts worldwide.

Coping patterns and their relation to daily activity, worries, depressive mood, and pain intensity in acute Whiplash Associated Disorders2013In: International Journal of Behavioral Medicine, ISSN 1070-5503, E-ISSN 1532-7558, Vol. 20, no 2, p. 293-303Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    BACKGROUND:

There is a lack of knowledge regarding how individuals with acute whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) appraise and cope with situation-specific stressors.

    PURPOSE:

The aim of the study was to describe the daily process of coping reported in a daily coping assessment by individuals with acute WAD within 1 month after the accident. More specifically, profiles of coping strategies were identified and patterns between stressors, primary and secondary appraisals, and coping strategy profiles were described in relation to reported level of activity, worries, depressed mood and pain intensity during the day.

    METHOD:

A descriptive and exploratory design was applied. Two hundred and twenty-nine whiplash-associated disorders-daily coping assessment (WAD-DCA) collected during seven consecutive days from 51 participants with acute WAD in Sweden, were included. Cluster analysis was used to obtain coping strategy profiles and data were graphically visualised as patterns through the coping process.

    RESULTS:

When measuring coping as a daily process relating to the specific stressful situation, different coping process patterns appeared. During days with a high degree of physical and mental well-being, high self-efficacy beliefs seemed to be working as an important secondary appraisal, whereas during days with a low degree of physical and mental well-being primary appraisals of the stressor as a threat and catastrophic thoughts were present in the coping process.

    CONCLUSIONS:

Early identification of situational- and individual-specific stressors, appraisals and coping efforts as measured by the WAD-DCA may contribute to the understanding of the coping process in the acute stage of WAD and its possible impact on recovery and adjustment.

Daily stressors in patients with acute Whiplash Associated Disorders2012In: Disability and Rehabilitation, ISSN 0963-8288, E-ISSN 1464-5165, Vol. 34, no 21, p. 1783-1789Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Stressors in acute whiplash associated disorders (WAD), as reported on a daily basis, have hitherto been neglected in research. The primary aim of this study was to describe the most stressful daily situation or event reported by individuals with acute WAD within a month of a whiplash trauma. Another aim was to describe the meaning and significance of these daily stressors, i.e. primary appraisal. Method: A descriptive design with a content analysis approach was used. 260 WAD-daily coping assessments (WAD-DCA) generated during 1 week by 51 participants with acute WAD were included in the study. Stressors were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The reported stressors generated 13 categories covering a wide range of stressful situations in daily life related to (i) work, (ii) physical symptoms, (iii) feelings and cognitions, (iv) family and home responsibilities and (v) recreation. The majority of the stressors were appraised as "expected" as well as "disabling". Most threatening stressors were related to work, driving and feelings/cognitions. Conclusions: The wide variety of stressors indicates that it is not only pain itself that influences daily life in acute WAD. Early identification of individual and situation-specific stressors gives new data regarding what bothers individuals suffering from WAD after a collision and may be helpful in understanding the coping process in relation to specific stressors and stressor appraisals

    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the comparative effectiveness of current standard treatment, against an individually tailored behavioural programme delivered via the Internet or face-to-face for people with acute whiplash associated disorders.

DESIGN: A multicentre, randomized, three-group design, with concealed allocation.

SUBJECTS AND SETTINGS: A total of 55 participants (37 female), age 18-65, with acute Whiplash Associated Disorder (Grade I-II), recruited at two emergency clinics in Sweden.

INTERVENTIONS: Before randomization all participants received standard self-care instructions. The Internet and face-to-face groups followed a seven-week behavioural programme involving individual tailoring, via email (Internet group), or in sessions at a physical therapy unit (face-to-face group). The control group only received the self-care instructions.

MAIN MEASURES: Pain-related disability, pain intensity, self-efficacy in daily activities, catastrophizing and fear of movement/(re)injury. Assessments were performed at baseline (2-4 weeks postinjury) and at three, six and 12 months postintervention.

RESULTS: Both the Internet (n = 16) and face-to-face (n = 14) group showed a larger decrease in pain-related disability than the control group (n = 16); -12 and -11, respectively, compared with -5 in the control group at 12-months follow-up. Significant differences between the groups in overall treatment effect were shown in all outcomes except pain intensity. All groups improved significantly over time in all outcomes, except for fear of movement/(re)injury and catastrophizing in the control group.

CONCLUSION: An individually tailored behavioural programme improved biopsychosocial factors in patients with whiplash associated disorders up to 12 months after treatment. Internet-delivered intervention was as effective as clinic-based face-to-face therapy sessions.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Janusz Korczak was a Polish writer, doctor and leader in the field of education and social work who introduced the concept of children’s rights in the early 20th century. Through his work Korczak contributed to the first international treaty to address children’s rights: the 1924 Geneva Declaration of the Rights of the Child. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) was not opened for ratification until 1989. Twenty-five years later, in 2014, children, young people and adults from 41 countries spanning the continents of Africa, America, Europe, Asia and Oceania met at a world conference on children’s rights and participation titled Children as Actors for Transforming Society (CATS).

The life of children in sheltered housing2015In: Rights of Children in the Nordic Welfare States / [ed] Gro Hellesdatter Jacobsen, Aarhus: Aarhus Universitetsforlag , 2015Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The chapter provides in-depth knowledge of how children’s lives change when they move with their mothers into a women’s shelter and how the activities for children at the residence reveal and address their needs. The chapter also presents how mothers perceive the situation of their children. More children than women live at this shelter. Almost all the children are victims of violence. Most were born in Sweden, but several have mothers or fathers who were born in another country. Some of the children are subjected to honour-related violence, with threats of kidnapping. No systematic violence and security assessment at which the children can make their voices heard is ordinarily conducted at the shelter. Half of the school-age children did not attend school for several months and received home schooling only to a very limited extent. Many of the younger children did not attend preschool. Resilience can be promoted for children in the life at a shelter also by volunteers.

Undergraduate education, graduate programmes, and dissertations: Within the field of social work in Sweden2013Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

This report contains information about undergraduate education and graduate programmes in Social Work, as well as a compilation of all theses written since the subject was established as an academic discipline in Sweden in the 1970s. As of 2013, Sweden has 16 universities or colleges that offer undergraduate training and instruction in the field of Social Work. Most also offer third-cycle courses on site. Swedish academic research in Social Work originated within a primarily sociological context, but because there are now several graduate programmes and a large number of senior researchers in the field, the knowledge base of Social Work has been deepened and is a discipline in its own right. This report begins by briefly describing the context in which the PhD theses are written. The background section reveals a process of development in which many changes have occurred and are still occurring. These changes are discussed from a gender perspective. In this report you will find the titles and authors of all theses in Social Work written in Sweden between the years of 1980 and 2012. Information is also provided on where to find abstracts and full-text copies of the theses.

New Tools in Welfare Research2013Conference proceedings (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In New tools in Welfare research various tools for qualitative and quantitative research on welfare are presented. The anthology presents both new and established theoretical perspectives and research methods in welfare research. The anthology has been developed within the framework of the Nordic Summer University and thus influenced by different research traditions at colleges and universities in the Nordic countries.Research tools in which people are involved are described, people's own statements and experiences are utilized and can be interpreted on the basis of established theoretical perspectives as phenomenology, hermeneutics, and interactionism. The research approaches presented enables people in different ages to participate even themselves and formulating the image of their living conditions. In the anthology shows how research using these approaches can be together with children, adults or old people in different life situations. It is also shown that comparative approaches may offer new insights into the various dimensions of the welfare system as a cultural practice.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This article describes a new model designed to provide professionals, parents and other important people in day-to-day contact with children and young people to create space for resilience-based interventions which can also be called Resilient Therapy (RT). Children living in vulnerable situations, on the run or in crisis can display incredible resilience and develop successfully "against all odds" to become what are known in Swedish as “dandelion children”. The children may have experienced traumatic events or other events with a great psychological strain. The basic idea of RT is that the adults in the child's environment may use different approaches to help to strengthen the child's resilience. The article presents a magic box with five different approaches that include tools to build and develop the child's resilience and promote optimal development.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Speak Up! Voices of European Children in Vulnerable Situations: An Explorative Study of Children’s Rights in Greece, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Sweden, the uk, Ireland and the Netherlands2015In: The International Journal of Children's Rights, ISSN 0927-5568, E-ISSN 1571-8182, Vol. 23, no 3, p. 569-601Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the Speak up! study is to increase our knowledge of European children in vulnerable situations or with special needs, and their own views about their rights and what needs to be improved. The methodology was to play a children’s rights game and to hold in-depth discussions about children’s rights in focus groups with children in vulnerable situations and in control groups. The qualitative study of children took place in eight European countries. Children, particularly children in vulnerable situations or with special needs, are insufficiently aware of their rights. Children living in vulnerable situations have very little experience of being listened to. They face discrimination due to disability, ethnic background or social disadvantage, and also due to being under 18-years-old. This study concludes that children in vulnerable situations or with special needs should not be viewed as passive victims but as social actors with the right to be listened to.

    Abstract [en]

Acomparative qualitative study titled Speak up! was conducted with children in eight European countries. The aims were to increase our knowledge about European children in vulnerable situations or with special needs and to elicit their views about their rights and what needs to be improved. The methodology of the project involved playing a children’s rights game and holding in-depth discussions in focus groups with children in vulnerable situations and with control groups. The vulnerable groups comprised children with disabilities, asylum-seeking children, children living in ‘urban pockets of poverty’, Roma children, Traveller children, children in juvenile justice institutions and children in care. The control groups were made up of children with mixed backgrounds from ordinary classes in regular school. According to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN CRC) all children have the right to be listened to, however many children, particularly children in vulnerable situations or with special needs, have very little experience of being listened to. They face discrimination due to disability, ethnic background or social disadvantage, as well as for being under 18 years old. The methodology of the Speak up! project shows that children in vulnerable situations or with special needs can take part in research and other activities where they communicate their experiences and suggest ideas for how to improve their situation in line with the UN CRC. Consultations need to be adapted to their specific circumstances and communication needs, and the children need to be able to trust the interviewer/moderator.

Compliance with behavioural guidelines in Sweden during the Covid-19 pandemic: The role of personality traits and perceptions of the situation2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Covid-19 pandemic caused countries across the world to implement a wide range of restrictions and recommendations to control the spread of the virus. The current study aimed to investigate how differences in personality traits and differences in how an individual perceives the situation of Covid-19 among Swedish university students affect the overall compliance with guidelines applied by their government. A total of 106 university students completed a questionnaire measuring personality traits (Big Five) and perceptions of the situation (Situational Eight DIAMONDS) in relation to their self-estimated compliance. The data analysis showed that the students complied with the guidelines with a mean of 77%. Individuals who were less agreeable and perceived less adversity in the Covid-19 situation complied more. All predictor variables could account for approximately 28% of the explained variance in compliance. These results are of importance in a preparatory purpose for governments to efficiently cope with future threats.

National self-image as an obstacle to ensuring children’s rights in the context of domestic violence and family law: the case of Sweden2018In: Journal of Social Welfare and Family Law, ISSN 0964-9069, E-ISSN 1469-9621, Vol. 40, no 4, p. 426-440Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to highlight and discuss contradictions and challenges in the current policy and practice regarding fathers’ violence towards mothers and children in the Swedish welfare state. In particular, professional discourses and understandings of domestic violence in disputes about contact, custody, residence and maintenance, following parental separation, are analysed. My research suggests that abusers find ways to manipulate professionals and get them unwittingly to enable their continued control of victimised mothers and children. One conclusion is that oppression is maintained through processes of familialisation and selective repression. These discursive practices reproduce intersectional inequalities and, in doing so, in many cases result in the administration rather than prevention of further violence.
