Förhandsbedömningar i barnavårdsärenden: En kvalitativ studie om socialsekreterares upplevelser av sina förutsättningar i arbetet med skydds- och förhandsbedömningar av barnavårdsärenden.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Retoriken i den pedagogiska praktiken2008In: Sjätte nationella konferensen i svenska mned didaktisk inriktning / [ed] Anne Palmér, Uppsala: Uppsala universitet , 2008, 1, p. 70-82Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Transinkludering i praktiken: En undersökande intervjustudie hur verksamheter inom socialt arbete bemöter transpersoner2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim for this study was to investigate how social workers perceive that they are responding to clients who define themselves as transgender. The study has a qualitative basis with six semistructured interviews based on an elaborated vignette method. The selection of interviewees was social workers, three in the field of public authority and three workers at various excutive agencies. The material have been analyzed based on Queer theory and Honneths Recognition Theory. The findings indicate that social work organizations are lacking in knowlege of transgender people and their experiences. There is also a lack of evidence-based procedures, action plans and policies to respond to transgender people within the organizations. The findings also implies that social workers can respond to transgender people and address them more empathically, with greater acceptance as well as recognition through a professional self-reflection and a humble attitude.

PROSTITUTION OCH MÄNNISKOHANDEL FÖR SEXUELLA ÄNDAMÅL: En kvalitativ studie om upplevelser av handlingsutrymme och utvecklingsmöjligheter hos socialarbetare inom kommunala myndigheter och frivilligorganisationer2019Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine how social workers in municipal authorities and NGOs experience their discretion and if there are any areas of development, in social work with youths and adults who are exposed to prostitution or human trafficking for sexual purposes. The study's aim and the questions at issue were answered through eight semi-structured interviews with female social workers in two municipalities in mid-Sweden. The study includes Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory of human development (1979) and Lipskys (1980) concept about street-level bureaucrats. The result shows that all social workers are experiencing that they’ve discretion in their work. A majority experience their discretion as free, because they make assessments and decisions on their own. The majority experience that external factors as workplace climate, colleagues, guidelines, routines, norms, views in society or laws does not delimitate their discretion and all social workers claim that social workers’ knowledge is inadequate. The majority also claims that knowledge is inadequate in society. Other areas of development are resources such as staff, sheltered housing for men and housing for women with active drug abuse. An increased priority of the target group in organisations is also an expressed development area, to strengthen the work around the target group.

    Abstract [en]

This qualitative interview study aims to investigate the collaboration between school, children and adolescent psychiatry and the social service with the intent to help children and adolescents aged 0 to 18 who suffer from mental health problems. The study is based on six semistructured interviews with two school counselors, two employees from the social services and two counselors from children and adolescent psychiatry (BUP). The results show that there are several obstructive and enabling factors when collaborating. The results show that when professionals consult with each other about difficult issues regarding young people suffering from mental illness, it promotes consensus and enables cooperation. Furthermore, the results show the prerequisites for collaboration within organizations is based on the fact that the management reaches domain consensus, in order to agree on how professionals shall collaborate.

How Children of Parents With Dementia Can Make Their Subject Positions Understandable and MeaningfulIn: Qualitative Health Research, ISSN 1049-7323, E-ISSN 1552-7557Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The families of people diagnosed with dementia are commonly first-in-line caregivers. This can have a considerable effect on their lives, health, and relationships. However, few studies have focused on the children in such families. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe how children, in their own narratives, construct themselves as subjects growing up and caring for a parent with dementia. The study applies discourse analysis. The findings show three subject positions: parent to your parent(s), orphan with parents, and time traveler stuck in time. There is a need to support these children, both as children and as young adults. More knowledge is necessary regarding the kind of support they might want or need. For health care professionals, it is important to know that it might not always be easy to ask for information or support as a child caring for a sick parent.

Barnets bästa i skuggan av organisatoriska krav: En intervjustudie om socialsekreterares förutsättningar att utforma umgänget mellan familjehemsplacerade barn och deras biologiska föräldrar med hänsyn till barnets bästa2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine social workers prerequisites to work with the relationship between children placed in foster care and their biological parents taking to account the best intrest of the child. Our research attempts to answer questions about which organizational conditions affect the work with the childrens relationships and what social workers consider when they plan the visitations according to the child’s best intrest. To answer the aim and the questions in the study, family case workers and children case workers were interviewed. The study is based on seven semi-structured interviews. The results shows that the administrative work within social services is mainly affecting the work with the relationships between the children and their biological parents. The manual-based work and the standard documentation that needs to be processed takes time from the social workers and prevent them to meet the children and build a trustful relationship to them. The results also shows that the social workers consider childrens age, maturity and previous relationships to the biological parents when they plan visitations according to the child’s best intrest.

"Man ska vara lite den här perfekta människan": en intervjustudie med skolkuratorer om unga och sociala medier2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examined elementary school students social media use, how they choose to present themselves there and what impact social media use can have on the health of children and adolescents. This qualitative study has been conducted using five semistructured interviews with school counselors. The theories used to analyze the results are social learning theory and dramaturgy theory. The result of the study shows that children and adolescents of today often start using social media in middle school (10-12 years of age), mainly to communicate with others and keep up with events. Furthermore it happens that children and adolescents accentuate positive things about themselves and their lives and present a glorified image of reality on social media. The result also shows that social media can have a big impact on the health of children and adolescents, for instance since they can experience anxiety and low self-esteem because of bullying or be affected by different ideals that can be found on social media.

"Man ska vara lite den här perfekta människan": en intervjustudie med skolkuratorer om unga och sociala medier2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The Two-Step Procedure: Using Gaming Insights to Improve Custody Evaluation Risk Assessment2012In: Sociology Study, ISSN 2159-5526, Vol. 2, no 10, p. 757-766Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Some children are maltreated and societies must protect them. This is done either at child protective services or when parents litigate over child custody, living, or visitation. Custody disputes provide difficult challenges for custody evaluators, particularly because information is often insufficient for high‐precision decision‐making. These challenges are present in both risk assessments (RAs) and investigations for the children’s best interest (ICBIs). Insights from gaming and signal‐detection theory show that thinking several steps ahead leads to statistical advantage which improves decision‐making in game play. The purpose of the present study is to show that gaming advantages can be used to improve RAs in custody disputes. The two‐step procedure is organized as: (1) defining RAs and ICBIs as two sets with intersection; and (2) completing RAs before initiating ICBIs and using liberal RA decision‐making criteria. Formal analysis and mathematical example show that the two‐step procedure reduces the total number of RA errors by about 50 percent and suggest that gaming finesses are transferrable to custody disputes. Furthermore, should the two‐step procedure be implemented, children are potentially protected from maltreatment post litigation. Implementation issues of the two‐step procedure are discussed.

Role and function: Aspects of quality of life of older people in rural Bangladesh2005In: Journal of Aging Studies, ISSN 0890-4065, Vol. 19, no 3, p. 363-374Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to explore the meaning of quality of life (QoL) for elderly people in a rural community in Bangladesh. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with 11 elderly persons aged 63-86 years. Interview data were analysed using content analysis to determine the conceptual meaning of elderly peoples' experiences of QoL. Two major themes emerged from the data as being of utmost importance in QoL of elderly people in rural Bangladesh. These were: (i) having a role in the family and the community and (ii) being functional, both physically and economically. Results also showed that elderly people in rural Bangladesh prioritise being healthy, having a good social network, social support and a secure financial situation in order to have good QoL. This study is a step towards a better understanding of QoL experienced by the elderly people themselves in a rural Bangladeshi context.

EKONOMI – ETT SJÄTTE SINNE I SOCIALT ARBETE: En kvantitativ studie om socionomstudenters ekonomiska kunskaper2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to look into what social workers who work within the field of child and family welfare do in order to make sure that the voices of the children are heard. This study also explore whether or not the social workers believe that the children get to participate in their own investigations. Nine social workers were interviewed whereof eight of them work in the child and family unity and one of them work with family law. The results are analyzed with the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), Hart’s Ladder of Participation as well as Lipsky’s Street-level bureaucracy. The results show that the social workers in general believe that different models are important when speaking to children. Furthermore they point out the importance of speaking to the children at least once during their investigations. Overall the partaking social workers reckon that the children’s voices are heard during their investigations. In conclusion, time pressure and workload can affect the outcome of the child investigations. The social workers think that the children's voices are heard in their investigations though more dialog with them is needed.

Några vuxna dyslektikers röster: Hur uppfattar dyslektiker sin dyslexi?- Hur kan man bäst undervisa barn med dyslexi?2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study has been to describe and analyze family counselors’ professional approach and experiences of meetings with parents. Data, consisting of semi-structured interviews with five various family counselors, working in three different family centers in a middle county in Sweden, was collected.  To analyze the material of the interviews, the reasoning of Giddens about modernity, the reasoning of Paynes about the system theoretical thinking of social work, and Payne’s critical perspective of social work, have been used as the theoretical framework of the study. The result shows that the challenges family counselors experienced are intercultural meetings, complex family relationships and increased digitization. To be able to handle these challenges, the family counselors have interior and exterior form of preparedness for action, which is the professional approach. The interior form of preparedness implies personal experiences, knowledge and approach towards the parents. The exterior form of preparedness implies expressed strategies as solution-focused approach and the principle of children’s well-fare. The preparedness of actions, that family counselors have got, is a guide to them in their professional role, where they to a great extent are their own appliances. The enabling factors that the family counselors are identifying are the family center as an arena and an increased digitization. The results show that the family guidance as social work is mainly reflexive-therapeutic and includes system theoretical thinking. Several modernity aspects are being analyzed in the result, as they express themselves in both parental habits and in the family counselors’ professional approach. The result largely confirms previous studies, even if the family counselor as a family guide profession on family centers, currently is not emphasized in the research.

ICT and Intellectual Disability: A Survey of Organizational Support at the Municipal Level in Sweden2017In: JARID: Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities, ISSN 1360-2322, E-ISSN 1468-3148, Vol. 30, no 4, p. 705-713Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Young adults today have grown up in a society where information and communication technology (ICT) support empowerment and social participation. Young adults with mild-to-moderate intellectual disability are at risk for marginalization by the digital divide. The aim was to map and describe how municipal organizations in Sweden organize support in terms of policy and strategies to enable the use of ICT in social care for adults with a mild-to-moderate intellectual disability. MethodsA quantitative, cross-sectional survey including all municipalities in Sweden (n=290) was conducted (response rate: 51%, n=147). Descriptive statistics were used. Results: Findings indicate a lack of organizational support for staff as well as for young adults with mild-to-moderate intellectual disability. Conclusion: Municipalities request more knowledge about strategies for making ICT available. Despite the lack of comprehensive strategies for ICT, some Swedish municipalities have taken the initiative in this area.

SUICIDPREVENTION I SKOLAN2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The suicide rate among young people is a common cause of death. Studies have shown that suicide prevention is highly effective in preventing young people from taking their lives. The overall objective of this study was to examine how the school is thinking about suicide prevention. A qualitative study was conducted in which school staff was interviewed. Semi-structured interviews were used and the results were analyzed together with previous research about suicide prevention. The humanistic perspective was elected as a source of inspiration, where the focus has been on the philosopher Carl Rogers and his thoughts on hearing and perceptive listening. Furthermore has national guidelines regarding suicide prevention been included in the analysis. Based on collected data, it was found that the school staff that were interviewed worked with a client-centered perspective and surrounding factors such as stress and anxiety. The results also highlight how a collaboration between the school staff and other members of the community looks like, and that the school staff believe that there is a need for an increase of resources in terms of school staff and education about to suicide prevention.

    Abstract [en]

This study has the purpose to examine how Swedish school counselors and school nurses handles and work with cases where honor related violence and opression occurs. We were particularly interested in what interventions are used, how the school counselors and school nurses treats and cater for children’s needs of support concerning honor-related problems, and what challenges the school counselors and school nurses face in cases involving honor-related violence. The study was conducted through qualitative interviews where three school teachers and one school nurse were interviewed. An intersectional perspective was used to analyze the empirical material and previous research within the field. The result shows that the interventions that are being used are both preventive and remedial where education, counselling and reporting to social services were the main actions. The respondents reported that trust, patience and understanding were central in the meeting with the children and young people. The respondents experienced several challenges including lack of cooperation, lack of intervention plans, and that honor-related problems it self is a large and complex field which causes uncertainties about how to handle it. The result also shows that there’s generally a culture-based perspective on honor-related problems in both the literature and among respondents.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to explore professional drug addiction care workers’ attitudes towards harm reduction interventions. The data collection was conducted through digital survey mailed to mangers and staff. In total 73 individuals choose to answer the survey. The biopsychosocial perspective and stigmatization theory were used to theoretically reflect on the results. Most respondents reported positive attitudes towards maintenance treatment, needle exchange programs and overdose prevention with naloxone. The result also shows that the majority of respondents’ have a negative attitude towards injection rooms and decriminalization of drugs for personal use. Moreover, staff with higher education reported more positive attitudes towards maintenance treatment, needle exchange, injection rooms and decriminalization of drugs for personal use. In conclusion, it is important to recognize and spread new developments and evidence-based research regarding harm reduction and decriminalization of narcotics drugs. Based on the respondents’ negative attitudes towards implement injection rooms and decriminalize drugs for personal use, but also the improvement of staffs’ attitudes that present study found it is supposed that neglecting prohibition and showing zero tolerance towards personal use will probably disappear in the future even in Sweden.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study explored how participation constitutes and is constituted by practices of power in group homes for people with intellectual disability. The study used disciplinary power as theoretical perspective and was based on 50 h of observation in two group homes with a total of 15 residents. The analysis identifies practices of power and their relationship to individual agency and participation. The results show that institutional structures construct practices of power that define codes of conduct for the group home residents and their possibility for participation. This study offers implications for the daily lives of residents in group homes for people with intellectual disability.

Understandings of participation in daily activity services among people with intellectual disabilities: a pedagogical sociocultural perspective2019In: Journal of Intellectual Disabilities, ISSN 1744-6295, E-ISSN 1744-6309, Vol. 2, p. 203-215Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study sought to explore different understandings of participation in daily activity services among people with intellectual disabilities. Using a pedagogical sociocultural perspective, the research focused on individuals’ perspectives and understandings as well as their account of social interaction, working and learning. In all, 17 people working in daily activity services were interviewed once, and, of these, 14 were interviewed a second time. Using qualitative content analysis, two themes and three categories were singled out. The results show that participation can be understood in two major ways: social interaction and performing work tasks.

    Abstract [en]

If the earlier consumptions of beggars were defined as "ethnic" swedes, nowadays the group of beggars are mainly accredited as vulnerable EU-citizens of Roma origin. The following study investigated if the conceptions of the beggars can contribute to the social secretary’s ability to affect their discretion. Through semi-structured interviews involving with the administrators of the social work and also including a content analysis of the law section adapting to the authority, some important concepts have been detected. The empirical data contribute to showing how operators in welfare tend to have a habit of displacing responsibility to outside of Sweden. The absquatulate the social workers reflected in the interviews was intertwined with compassion and a behavior of transferring the responsibility for the target group to other nations and structures outside of Sweden. Nevertheless, none of the informants suggested that EU-citizens, on the same conditions as Swedish citizens, should be included in the Swedish welfare. The representatives of social work and their contributions of difference-making, thus their excluding conception of the target group is considered to be a result of social service and governmental conformation. To summarize, the results we can recognize within the investigation of the welfare-systems connection to the EU-citizen, is according to the critics that the the vulnerable EU-citizen has lost his rights and position in a society where beggars can only function as ”invisible”.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Participation in everyday life for adults with profound intellectual (and multiple) disabilities2018Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Adults with profound intellectual (and multiple) disabilities need society’s support to live under “as normal circumstances” as possible. Support should be carried out in accordance with the Swedish disability policy vision of full participation in community and equality in living conditions.

Aim: To highlight and problematise the conceptualisation of participation, and how participation is achieved in implementation plans and in everyday life for adults with profound intellectual (and multiple) disabilities living in a group home or in their own home with support from personal assistants.

Method: Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to gain a deeper understanding of participation. In study I, 17 implementation plans were analysed. In study II, 27 social care managers and staff members were interviewed. In study III, 4 adults with profound intellectual (and multiple) disabilities living in a group home and their 13 staff members were observed.

Results: Documentation of participation focused on self-care and community, social, and civic life. In interviews with staff members and managers, the results showed that participation is abstract and hard to handle. Participation for the adults was about doing or being present in general daily activities. The conditions needed for facilitating participation were the adults’ capabilities, staff members’ knowledge, and resources in the social division. Moreover, the adults were listened to, supported in expressing their views, and their views were taken into account. However, they were not involved in decision-making processes nor did they share the power and responsibility for decision-making.

Conclusions: Participation for the adults is conditional, seldom involves decision-making processes, and is hardly ever connected to social contacts and leisure activities. In addition, attitudes about the adults’ capability present a barrier to participation. The social care division need to better enable and facilitate participation by changing the conditions as well as educating the staff around changing their attitudes about the adults’ capabilities. Managers and staff members need to have a shared understanding of what participation entails so that they all work in the same direction. Furthermore, the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) can be used as a tool when drawing up individual plans so that the adults’ wishes and preferences are considered. Shier’s ladder of participation can be an instrument to increase participation in daily life for adults with PI(M)D.

Staffs’ documentation of participation for adults with profound intellectualdisability or profound intellectual and multiple disabilities2018In: Disability and Rehabilitation, ISSN 0963-8288, E-ISSN 1464-5165, Vol. 40, no 21, p. 2527-2537Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: This study investigated what areas of International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health were documented in implementation plans for adults with profound intellectual disability or profound intellectual and multiple disabilities with focus on participation.

Methods: A document analysis of 17 implementation plans was performed and International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health was used as an analytic tool.

Results: One hundred and sixty-three different codes were identified, especially in the components Activities and participation and Environmental factors. Participation was most frequently coded in the chapters Community, social and civic life and Self-care. Overall, the results showed that focus in the implementation plans concerned Self-care and Community, social and civic life. The other life areas in Activities and participation were seldom, or not at all, documented.

Conclusions: A deeper focus on participation in the implementation plans and all life areas in the component Activities and participation is needed. It is important that the documentation clearly shows what the adult wants, wishes, and likes in everyday life. It is also important to ensure that the job description for staff contains both life areas and individual preferences so that staff have the possibility to work to fulfill social and individual participation for the target group.

    • Implications for rehabilitation
    • There is a need for functioning working models to increase participation significantly for adults with profound intellectual disability or profound intellectual and multiple disabilities.

    • For these adults, participation is achieved through the assistance of others and support and services carried out must be documented in an implementation plan.

    • The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health can be used to support staff and ensure that information about the most important factors in an individual’s functioning in their environment is not omitted in documentation.

    Abstract [en]

    Background

Participation is a central aspect of quality of life, and it is indicative of high‐quality outcomes for people with intellectual disabilities. However, participation is difficult to achieve for adults with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities.

    Aim

To describe staff members’ perceptions of what participation means for adults with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities.

    Method

Using a phenomenographic approach, 27 interviews were analysed resulting in variations in the conditions for participation.

    Results

The interviews revealed conditions for participation at individual, staff and organisational levels.

    Conclusion

Participation appears to be an un‐reflected phenomenon, and several conditions must be met to achieve it. The conditions are experienced being fundamental for adults within the target group to achieve any kind of participation. The staff members and managers’ perceptions of participation as conditional can make it more difficult for adults within the target group to achieve the Swedish disability policy goal of participation.

    Abstract [en]

A large number of children and teenagers are placed in foster care for various reasons. Social services have a responsibility to follow up youths and ensure that they have the same opportunity for positive development as other young people. A qualitative study was conducted with an abductive perspective by gathering material from social workers in this particular field. The research design of this study is an interview study. The theoretical premise was Bronfenbrenners ecosystem theory and Maslows hierarchy of needs theory. The aim of this study was to examine how social services work to secure youths life situation and how social workers promotes teenagers perspective in their work. The collected material was analyzed thematically. Results showed that all social workers in the study perceived that a functioning schooling and network around the teenagers is important. Another outcome was that frequent follow-up work in foster care is important and that four of six municipalities have one responsible social worker that only follows teenagers in foster care. One of the municipalities which do not have one responsible social worker as a separate position is under preparation to develop this profession. A further result in this study was that social workers variously promote teenagers perspective in their work.

    Abstract [en]

The essay examined professional male social workers in social work with semi-structured interviews. The informants' experience of being a man in social work was put in focus. Nine male social workers in the ages 23-65 were interviewed. The theory chosen for this essay was Connell's (2005) hegemonic masculinity theory. The analysis consisted of a framework-like thematic matrix (Ritchie, Lewis, Mcnaughton Nicholls & Ormston, 2014). Among the most significant finds for this study was that it was desirable to recruit more men into social work. Results show that competence was more important than one’s sex and that there were not enough men with a proper social worker degree, which made it difficult to achieve mixed work groups sex-wise. An increased mix of sexes in the work groups would increase the quality of efforts and create a better working environment, according to the informants. Men in social work were in short supply, therefore did the informants find that they gained benefits because of their sex. Benefits in terms of career and wages and disadvantages in terms of a categorically negative stereotyping of men. The conclusion of this paper was that knowledge about masculinities should be increased in social work.
