    Abstract [en]

    The use of biomass has increased in recent years due to the efforts to reduce the high emissions of greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide from combustion of fossil fuels. At the same time industrial processes have become more complex because of increased production rates and profitability requirements. A higher degree of automation is needed when the processes are too complex to be handled manually. There is a need to find modeling strategies that can automatically handle the challenges that the conversion of biomass in an industrial process entails, such as operational changes, decreasing component and overall system efficiency, drifting sensors, etc. The objective of this thesis is to develop a methodology for on-line applications in industrial processes. Dynamic process models have been developed for continuous digesters and boilers. Process models have been evaluated for their use in continuous industrial process. Applications that have been studied are monitoring and diagnostics, advanced control and decision support. The process models are designed for on-line simulations. The results shows that the use of mathematical simulation models can improve the use of both process data and process understanding, to achieve improved diagnostics, advanced control and process optimization. In the two examples of industrial processes covered in this thesis, we can see that similar types of models can be used for completely different types of processes, such as pulp digesters and boilers. It also demonstrates the ability to combine soft sensors and hard sensors with physical models to take the information to a higher level of utilization.

    65% of the buildings in Västerås, situated in the region of Mälardalen, Sweden were built before 1970. It is thus time for renovation. The situation is the same in most cities in Sweden and Northern Europe. The depth of renovation can be quite different. In this paper we evaluate some examples where cost is compared to energy saving effect. How to plan renovation to make use of the available capital in the cities is discussed. As a complement to direct renovation actions also behavior change with respect to energy is discussed and exemplified. The cost for energy actions in relation to other renovation aspects is discussed especially for the passive house case in Allingsås, Sweden. The passive house center calculate an extra cost for passive house standard to be 10 000 €/apartment while an external consultant has the figure 40 000 € of the total cost of 120 000 €. With this space heating can be 18 kWh/m2.year, or a reduction by 84 % with respect to space heating and 62% for overall heat and hot water demand. If you use the latter cost figure passive house standard is not motivated from an energy savings perspective while if using the lower figure it is very interesting. For the other less deep renovations we see that adding more insulation and three glass windows is motivated if the degradation has been strong, while a simpler renovation may be ok if the outer surface coating is not too bad. For these less deep renovations we see cost figures of 65 €/m2 respectively 28 €/m2 with reduction of heating and hot water demand of 56 % respectively 34 %.

    This paper discusses the accuracy of different types of models. Statistical models are based on process data and/or observations from lab measurements. This class of models are called black box models. Physical models use physical relationships to describe a process. These are called white box models or first principle models. The third group is sometimes called grey box models, being a combination of black box and white box models. Here we discuss two examples of model types. One is a statistical model where an artificial neural network is used to predict NOx in the exhaust gases from a boiler at Mlarenergi AB in Vsters, Sweden. The second example is a grey box model of a continuous digester. The digester model includes mass balances, energy balances, chemical reactions and physical geometrical constraints to simulate the real digester. We also propose that a more sophisticated model is not required to increase the accuracy of the predicted measurements.

    Abstract [en]

    Forest biomass is a renewable and sustainable source of energy that can be used for producing electricity, heat, and biofuels. The production of biomass for energy is considered to be an important step in developing sustainable communities and managing greenhouse gas emissions effectively. Biomass properties vary and are commonly associated with plant species. Hence, efficient methods to predict biofuel characteristics will greatly affect the utilization and management of feedstock production. In this paper attempt was made to correlate various chemical characteristics with NIR spectra. Wood chips from various plant species was analyzed for lignin content, heating value, ash content and NIR and the results were evaluated with correlation, PCA and PCR. Initial evaluation showed promising results where chemical components in the wood correlate to NIR spectra. A selection of results will be presented in this paper. Further analysis as well as results from PCA and PCR models will be presented in the full paper version.

    This paper covers a method for operator decision support, where physical simulation models are used to connect different physical variables to each other. By comparing energy and material balances for a larger process area inconsistencies in single process parts and sensor measurements can be detected, by following the development between single measurements and values predicted from the simulations. This information then can be used as input to e.g. a BN, Bayesian Network, for decision support. The application has been for a CFB boiler at Mälarenergi AB. The simulators have been made in Modelica respectively a more advanced model in APROS.

    Syftet för denna studie att ge små företag en ökad förståelse för hur de kan internationalisera sig på den holländska marknaden. För att besvara detta användes dessa frågeställningar:

    Vilka möjligheter och utmaningar finns för företag med att internationalisera sig?

    • Vilka möjliga etableringsformer är passande?
    • Hur kan etableringsbarriärer påverka företags internationaliseringsprocess på den utländska marknaden?
    • Hur kan ett kontaktnätverk införskaffas och utnyttjas vid ett företags internationaliseringsprocess?

    Studien är uppbyggd på en kvalitativ forskningsmetod där både primär- och sekundärdata har använts. Primärdata har samlats in genom fem stycken djupgående intervjuer med personer från olika företag som besitter olika kunskap om internationalisering. Sekundärdata har införskaffats genom olika hemsidor. Förutom detta så har även vetenskapliga artiklar använts till den teoretiska referensramen.

    Frågeställning:

    • Vilken är den procentuella förändringen av goodwill och lönsamhet sedan införandet av IFRS 3 i de båda branscherna?
    • Finns det ett samband mellan andelen goodwill och lönsamhet i de båda branscherna?
    • Ökar eller minskar lönsamheten av goodwillnedskrivningar?

    Syfte: Syftet med vår studie är att med hjälp av analyser undersöka sambanden mellan goodwill och företagens lönsamhet samt få en ökad insikt i hur goodwillen och dess nedskrivning hanteras i de valda branscherna. Detta anser vi intressant då IFRS 3 har i syfte att ge internationella riktlinjer hur goodwillen ska redovisas, men på grund av subjektiva bedömningar uppstår skillnader som påverkar företagens lönsamhet. Studiens utfall kan vara av intresse för intressenter inom branscherna.

    Metod: Studien är genomförd med en kvantitativ metod. En statistisk analys genomförts där vi testat signifikanta samband mellan variabler. Materialet till detta är sammanställt från nio företags årsredovisningar, under en tio års period. Resultatet studerades genom sammanställningar i diagram och med regressionsanalyser.

    Slutsats: Studien visade att i byggnationsbranschen har räntabiliteten minskat samtidigt som goodwillen har ökat. I telekommunikationsbranschen har räntabiliteten ökat samtidigt som goodwillen minskat. Detta sedan införandet av IFRS 3. Studien visade att det finns ett samband mellan lönsamhet och goodwill i de studerade branscherna. Inget signifikant värde uppnås på nedskrivningarnas påverkan på lönsamheten vilket gör att vi inte kan uttala oss om det finns ett samband mellan dessa.

    Abstract [en]

    Research Questions: What effect does uncertainty caused by divestment have on resistance to organizational change? How does this type of change affect employee motivation?

    Purpose: Change processes, such as divestments, are strongly related to employee motivation and engagement. Understanding how organizational divestment affects employee motivation is of great importance and would therefore help companies recognize the importance of minimizing uncertainty factors to increase employee motivation. This leads to the purpose of the thesis, which is to study the effects of divestment on employee motivation and draw links to the ongoing modular divestment at ABB Power Grids.

    Method: The research questions and the purpose were answered by using a qualitative approach by conducting eight semi-structured in-depth interviews. When drawing conclusions to answer the research question, the arguments were strengthened by a qualitative foundation. With the usage of a case company, the study aims to provide a better understanding of the effects that an ongoing divestment phenomenon has on employee motivation.

    Conclusion: A connection between uncertainty caused by divestment and a decrease in employee motivation was noticed in the conducted research. The uncertainty was mostly caused by the lack of communication regarding the divestment. The lack of communication also had other implications such as spread of rumors regarding the divestment and employees not feeling part of the organization which further demotivated them.

    Greenhouse climate control is complicated procedure since the number of variables involved on it and which are dependent on each other. This paper presents a contribution to integrate greenhouse inside climate keys parameters, leading to promote a comfortable micro-climate for the plants growth while saving energy and water resources. A smart fuzzy logic based control system was introduced and improved through specific measure to the temperature and humidity correlation. As well, the system control was enhanced with wireless data monitoring platform for data routing and logging, which provides real time data access. The proposed control system was experimentally validated. The efficiency of the system was evaluated showing important energy and water saving.

    The assessment of off-grid electrification programs in developing countries largely based on mini-grid and solar home system (SHS) has shown that they are faced with low development imparts and sustainability challenges, which has resulted in failure of many projects. This study provides solutions on how to surmount these challenges, leaning on the experience of a hybrid solar-diesel mini-grid at Tsumkwe village in Namibia. It provides analyses of a case study based on empirical evidence from field studies, interviews of representatives of households, public institutions and energy providers. In addition, it investigates the technical challenges and economic impacts of the electrification program. HOMER™ and MATLAB™ models were used in the analysis and investigations. The findings show that despite the challenges, the system has been sustained because it keyed into an existing structure with growth potentials. The progressive tariff system adopted by the government helped to cushion costs and allow low income households in the energy matrix. Adoption of strict maintenance measures, and implementation of energy efficiency measures prior to the commissioning of the program, resulted in the reduction of costs. The success elements identified in this study could be extrapolated in other sub-Saharan African countries if the challenges are properly addressed.

    Sustainability and development impacts of off-grid electrification in developing countries: An assessment of South Africa's rural electrification program2016Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)

    Previous studies have shown that provision of sustainable electricity supply to rural households is essential to bring development to off-grid populations. For this reason, most developing countries put large efforts into rural electrification programs to stimulate development and reduce poverty. However, to be sustainable these programs need to recover costs, which poses a challenge to remote low income populations.  This often forces governments and other institutions involved in rural electrification to subsidize the electricity production. It also affects the choice of technology and places a barrier on the level of energy provided in line with the ability to pay for services. As a result of this, most programs have failed to achieve the desired objectives, as the technologies used often do not support income generating activities that could increase the payment capabilities of the beneficiaries and contribute to development.

    This thesis is focused on the rural electrification program of South Africa, the country in sub-Saharan Africa that has the highest access to electricity. It investigates the success elements that influence the sustainability of rural electrification programs and their contributions to socio-economic development. This was achieved by evaluating the South African program that provides solar home systems to off-grid communities, and a hybrid solar-wind mini-grid project in South Africa. The study also draw lessons from other rural electrification programs in neighbouring countries, i.e. an evaluation of a hybrid solar-diesel mini-grid system in Namibia, and a review of two systems, a hybrid solar-biomass mini-grid project in Botswana and a hydro mini-grid program in Lesotho. The study revealed that hydro based hybrid mini-grid systems provide the most cost effective way of bringing energy services to rural settlements. Regardless of technology, successful programs depend on adequate support from the government, implementation of a progressive tariff system that allows the high consuming high income earners and businesses, to cross subsidize the low consuming , low income users. It shows that it is more likely for rural electrification programs to survive if the design considers the existing businesses, population growth and the corresponding load increase. The thesis further shows that provision of sufficient energy to induce income generating activities is essential to decrease the need for subsidies and to ensure the sustainability of programs. In addition, availability of spare parts and a capable management team is essential for the successful operations and maintenance of these systems.

    The introduction of the off-grid electrification program in South Africa using the Solar Home System (SHS) was a central component of the government policy aimed at bringing development to un-electrified households. An assessment of the performance of SHS in many countries provided little evidence to support the development impact of the system. The general perception is that the SHS program is wasting government funds and has no hope of achieving the set objectives. Previous scientific reports have concluded that SHS is the most viable technology for bringing about socio-economic development to rural households. Most of these conclusions have been based on one sided arguments and largely on anecdotal evidence. This study provides a pluralistic view of the subject from the perspective of the energy service companies (ESCOs) and the households using the equipment. The development impact of SHS is subjected to scientific analysis by investigating the economic and social dimensions of the program. Additionally, the sustainability of the South African SHS program is assessed by investigating the challenges facing the ESCOs and the households. The study reveals that illumination provided by SHS electricity has profound impact on the livelihoods of rural households. Due to the limited capacity of SHS for productive and thermal use, there are limited direct economic benefits to the households. The associated economic impact is peripheral to the secondary usage of SHS electricity. SHS has improved the productivity of small scale business owners who utilize the light from SHS to do business at night. Irregularities in payment of subsidy funds and energy bills, high operation cost, non-optimal use of SHS, grid encroachment, and lack of customer satisfaction contribute to make the business unsustainable for the ESCOs.

    Abstract [en]

    Most contributions on the issues of sustainability of rural electrification projects have focused on the technology and business models used to drive the projects. The issues of user education and environmental impact on the technology have received little attention, despite the fact that these challenges affect lives of projects after commissioning. The usage pattern of solar home systems (SHS) by most users that placed their solar panels close to obstructing objects, results in shading of the panels, and geographic location of households in the concession areas of the South African SHS program affects the performances of the system. The non-optimal use of SHS is mainly due to lack of user education. Therefore this paper reports on the impact of geographic location and shading of panels on the economics and technical performance of SHS. The study was done by investigating the performance of 75 WP solar panels operated at two sites in South Africa (Upington in Northern Cape Province and Thlatlaganya in Limpopo Province), the performance of an optimized shaded SHS and a non-shaded one was also investigated. The results show that both geographic location and shading compromise the performance of the systems, the energy output of a solar panel located at Upington is increased by 19% and the state of charge of the battery (SOC) increased by 6%, compared to the panel situated at Thlatlaganya village. Also the life span of the battery is increased by about one year. The SOC of the partially shaded SHS is reduced by 22% and loss of power to the load increased by 20%. The geographical location of the SHS concession areas in South Africa and lack of adherence to the manufacturer's installation specification affects the economics of SHS and the energy output vis-a-vis the sustainability of the program due to reduction in life cycle of the batteries.

    The objective of most rural electrification programs in the developing world is to bring about socioeconomicdevelopment to households. Governments have put in place a number of measures to achievethis goal. Previous studies on rural electrification programs in developing countries show that solar homesystems and mini-grid systems are the dominant technologies. Assessments of a pilot hybrid mini-gridproject at Lucingweni village have concluded that mini-grid projects are not feasible due to high electricityproduction costs. As a result efforts toward rural electrification have been focused on the solar homesystem. Nevertheless, previous studies of the South African solar home system program have shown thatthe development objectives of the program are yet to be met more than a decade after commissioning.Therefore, this study investigates the viability of a hybrid mini-grid as a solution for rural developmentin South Africa. Investigations were based on Lucingweni and Thlatlaganya, two rural Villages where themini-grid and solar home system have been introduced. The mini-grid systems were designed taking intoconsideration available natural resources and existing load profiles. The results show that a village of 300households needs about 2.4 kW h/household/day of electricity to initiate and sustain income generatingactivities and that the solar home system is not capable of supporting this level of demand. We also showthat in locations with hydro resources, a hybrid mini-grid system has the most potential for meeting theenergy needs of the households in a cost effective manner. The assessment shows that with adequateplanning and optimization of available resources, the cost of electricity production can be reduced.

    One of the challenges to the sustainability of the Solar Home System (SHS) electrification program in South Africa is equipment theft. In response to this, communities susceptible to solar panel theft resort to mounting their panels flat on the ground so they can be looked after during the day and taken indoors at night for safe keeping. Other households use their security lights to illuminate their environment and provide security for pole and roof mounted solar panels at night. These actions have consequential effects on the performance of the SHS. Several studies have detected resentment from households regarding the low power quality from these systems. Most scientific contributions on the issue of low power from SHS have focused on the challenges based on the technical designs of the systems. The power losses due to the usage pattern of the system has not received much attention. This study therefore reports on the technical losses as a result of the deviation from the designed and installed specification of the system by the users in order to protect their systems. It also investigates the linkage between the technical and economic losses which affects the sustainability of SHS program. A case study was performed in Thlatlaganya village within Limpopo province in South Africa. Technical analysis using PVSYST solar software revealed that the energy output and performance of the battery is compromised as a result of these practices. Economic analysis indicates that the battery life and the economics of owning and operating SHS are affected negatively. The study recommends solutions to mitigate these losses, and proposes a cost effective way of optimizing the operation of SHS using a Bench-Rack system for mounting solar panels.

    Metod:                     Studien genomfördes i en kvalitativ metodansats i form av semi-strukturerade intervjuer. Dessa intervjuer omfattades av tre fokusgrupper med sex deltagare vid respektive intervjutillfälle.

    Slutsats:                 Studien upplyser att konsumenten upplever både positiva och negativa attityder gentemot varumärkens användning av robot influencer marknadsföring. Konsumenten anser att det är svårt att skapa en relation till ett varumärke som använder sig av robot influencers då detta inte uppfattas som en trovärdig källa. Faktorer som anses som betydelsefulla, för att stärka trovärdigheten och konsumentens positiva uppfattning om varumärket är robot influencers objektiva ställningstagande till varumärket. För att ytterligare öka trovärdigheten till robot influencers objektiva ställningstagande kräver konsumenten kännedom om personen som styr robotens innehåll. Om konsumenten dessutom associerar samarbetet som relevant medför det en möjlighet till positiva uppfattningar gentemot varumärket.

    Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how characteristics on individual level affects team performance.

    Method: This thesis is based on surveys and an experiment. An experiment was chosen due to the nature of the subject and the possibility to acquire complex data. Also using a survey gives both objective and subjective data.

     

    Conclusion: Team characteristics motivation to lead and participatory leadership was found to be positively related to network centrality. Leadership processes was positively related to density. For team characteristics, having several team members with coordinator role was found to be positively related to network centrality. Cooperation was positively related to density. Density was not found to be related to team performance. Network centrality was positively related to team performance. Hence, some team and leadership characteristics were related to shared leadership. Shared leadership had a negative effect on team performance.

    Recommendations from World Health Organization encourage to increased intake of fruits and vegetables, concurrently as the use of pesticides and their influence of the quality of fruit and vegetable has been greatly discussed. Increased intake of conventional fruit and vegetables increases the content of certain chemical substances in the human body. The purpose of this study was to examine the pesticide residues in two fruits and two vegetables and to gain a deeper understanding about how different chemicals affect human health. The methods used were a survey based on a literature study based on article searches in the databases Discovery and PubMed.  Articles corresponding to the study’s aim were included. Exposure to pesticides can pose various risks to human health; increased risk of cancer and / or endocrine disruptors. However an intake of organic vegetables reduces the risk of exposure to pesticide.

    This study focused on the effect of inserting fins into metal foam on the solidification rate. To this aim, a well-designed experimental system with solid-liquid interface visualization was built. Metal foam samples with different fin intervals were prepared for experiments. Solidification process of water saturating in finned metal foam under bottom cooling was experimentally investigated. Results showed that inserting fins into metal foam can make a promotional improvement on solidification rate of water. The solid-liquid interface became curved after inserting fins, compared with metal foam sample without fins. Besides, changing the interval has little effect on the solidification rate.

    Abstract [en]

    This study presented an experimental investigation on solidification behavior of fluid saturated in highly porous open-cell copper foams. Particular attention has been made on the effect of pore parameters (pore density and porosity) on the solidification behavior. A purposely-designed apparatus was built for experimental observations. Results showed that the copper foam had a great effect on solidification and the full solidification time can be saved up to 50%, especially preventing the decrease in solidification rate during the later stage of phase change. The smaller the porosity is, the faster the solidification rate will be. Pore density was found to have little influence upon the solidification rate. In addition, the local natural convection does exist but it has a slight effect on solidification, leading to the slant of the solid-liquid interface.

    Conclusion:            More assignments per auditor can be performed but there is currently insufficient                                knowledge within information technology. The evolution of digitization enables                                increased efficiency and quality within the audit profession.     Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to explore how the multinational corporation Company X implements training and development programs and performance appraisal systems to enhance the employees’ performance.

    Method: To gain an understanding on the phenomenon, primary data was collected and analyzed utilizing a case study. Primary data was collected through a qualitative approach in the form of interviews in order to investigate the concepts in depth and evaluate with greater detail. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews, telephone interviews and email interviews were conducted. Secondary data was utilized to complement and support the primary data.

    Conclusion: The implementation of trainings, development programs and performance appraisal systems at Company X increases the employees’ ability, motivates the employees and offers employees various opportunities, which enhances employee performance. Through the various methods of trainings and development programs, the required knowledge is obtained. Guidance is provided to help employees in their career paths, which enhances organizational effectiveness by improving an employee’s efficiency and motivation. The performance appraisal systems which are; Performance Development Appraisal, Ranking system and management by objectives, are utilized to evaluate the employee performance, to detect strengths and weaknesses and better fit the position of an employee. The opportunities provided at Company X increase an individual's performance by teaching and encouraging working smarter, planning better and prioritizing.

    This study explores the effect that extrinsic cues such as COO, brand image and online store image have on consumers’ online purchase intention. In addition, it examines how firms utilize these extrinsic cues to reach their online consumers. In the pursuance of achieving the purpose of this study, primary data was collected through a dyadic mixed method approach. A survey was conducted to collect data from 205 consumers and email interviews were employed to gather data from 3 managers working in different companies. The companies incorporate COO in their strategies in the pursuance of associating their product with a positive association. However, COO is an extrinsic cue that does not affect the consumers’ online purchase intention thus playing an insignificant role in the online setting.  In regards to brand image, companies use their brand identity to reflect their brand image to their consumers through their products and communication channels.  In contrast, brand image, as an extrinsic cue, does not directly influence consumers’ online purchase intention. Instead, it influences online purchase intention indirectly through online store image. Consequently, online store image is an extrinsic cue that influences consumers’ online purchase intention. Firms reinforce the dimensions that build online store image by increasing ease of use, emphasizing on visual informational content and adapting their payment, currency, language and delivery methods. Hence, online store image is an extrinsic cue that plays a major role for both consumers and firms.

    The Solar Heat Integration NEtwork (SHINE) is a European research school in which 13 PhD students in solar thermal technologies are funded by the EU Marie-Curie program. It has five PhD course modules as well as workshops and seminars dedicated to PhD students both within the project as well as outside of it. The SHINE research activities focus on large solar heating systems and new applications: on district heating, industrial processes and new storage systems. The scope of this paper is on systems for district heating for which there are six PhD students, three at universities and two at companies. In addition there is a seventh PhD in a Swedish national research school focused on energy efficiency within district heating networks (Reesbe). The initial work has concentrated on literature studies and on setting up initial models and measurement setups to be used for validation purposes. Some results of these studies are presented in the paper. The PhD students will complete their studies in 2017-18.

    Syfte: Huvudsyftet är att beskriva hur resebranschen kan justera sitt förhållningssätt gentemot All-inclusiveturism för att bättre gagna en långsiktig hållbar samhällsutveckling i de länder där verksamhet bedrivs. Delsyftet bottnar i att undersöka och analysera hur den rådande All-inclusiveturismen påverkar samhället ur ett långsiktigt hållbart samhällsperspektiv.

    Metod: Studien är av kvalitativ karaktär och baseras på sekundärdata i form artiklar, rapporter och böcker för ämnet relevant litteratur samt primärdata i form av personliga intervjuer med profiler som förespråkar hållbar turism. En fallstudie av den svenska resebranschens förhållningssätt till en långsiktig hållbar samhällsutveckling genomfördes med en deduktiv ansats. Vidare tolkades referensramen och empirins insamlade material för att skapa en analys och slutsats.

    Slutsats: Givet att nedanstående förslag implementeras kan resebranschen justera sitt förhållningssätt gentemot All-inclusiveturism för att bättre gagna en långsiktig hållbar samhällsutveckling i de länder där verksamhet bedrivs.

    Questions:     How does communication and engagement with stakeholders affect the

                           relationship and organizational identity of an institution?    

     

    Purpose:         The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the alumni network through a

                           stakeholder perspective, specifically to understand how to enhance

                           communication.

     

    Method:         This study used a mixed method approach in order to give more understanding                          and in-depth knowledge and answer the research question. Primary data was                            collected by semi-structured interviews and a survey with both opened ended                            and closed ended questions. Two tables were made in order to explain the                                connections between the interview and survey questions with the theoretical                              background.

     

    Conclusion:   It was concluded that MDH and the alumni want a continued relationship with                           engagement and embeddedness. At the moment this is difficult since the                                   communication is very limited and one way. To help improve this, stakeholders                         need to be identified sooner. The idea is that the more stakeholders that are                             informed while still studying at MDH, the more likely they will be to continue the                         relationship. A key factor for this to happen is for the communication to be more                       grounded. When communication is flowing and two way, where the relationship                         builds on engagement and forms into embeddedness, the organizational identity                         can then be realized.

    Abstract [en]

    Today agriculture sector has a big contribution to the development of economy for many countries. Irrigation is a method which supplies amount of water required in proper time to the cropped land and contributes to the increases of agriculture productivity. Using diesel pump to deliver water to the place of use causes problems both in terms of profitability and environmental perspectives. Higher price of diesel increases operation costs of diesel water pumping system thereby reducing the incomes. In addition the use of diesel pump emits a huge amount of CO2 emissions which cause global warming. A possible solution to those problems is to use solar energy, a source of energy which is environmental friend and available for free.

    The main target of this thesis is to design and optimize a cost effective PVWPs considering three alternatives with tank storage, battery storage and a system without storages medium. The two areas in Eastern province of Rwanda were taken as case study to grow coffee and cassava with five hectares each.

    To run simulations, different tools have been used. Those includes CROPWAT to determine water requirements for two crops; MS Excel to design a PVWPs directly connected to irrigation system, make economic analysis, evaluate CO2 emissions and calculate other parameters. Furthermore in PVsyst software the design and simulation for PVWPs with storages medium has been carried out. 

    Results showed that using PVWPs directly connected to irrigation system is the most profitable way when compared to the rest two alternatives.  They also showed that systems designed to irrigate coffee becomes the most profitable due to huge amount of electricity surplus and higher price per kilogram of coffee. Finally fully replacement of DWPs results in annual reduction of CO2 emissions by 6.6 tonnes.

    The purpose of this study is to examine how construction logistics work for the ongoing

    project “Årstastråket” Stage 1, and to identify the logistics problems that the project may

    have. The aim then is to find solutions to these problems in order to avoid them in the

    upcoming projects. The study will include delopment of a standard template that can be used

    in logistics planning of the project. At the beginning of the study a comprehensive literature

    review of the available literature including reports and research articles was done to obtain a

    deeper knowledge of the subject in question. The result of this study is based on conducted

    case studies on the construction site, such as interviews and site visits. The majority of

    collection in the case study was mainly collected from 11 site visits, which then was

    supplemented with the information obtained from the interviews. The interviews were

    conducted with the local manager and supervisor of the project at “Årstastråket” Stage 1. In

    this study the construction logistics worked generally well, both in terms of transport- and

    material flow at the construction site. The main logistics problems identified in “Årstastråket”

    Stage 1 was particularly poor logistics planning of the project at an early stage, lack of visual

    communication and constant updating of construction site plan alongside project developing.

    The new developed standard template for logistics planning of the project at an early stage

    can be used in order to achieve the established goals and make the project even more

    effective.

    Abstract

    Is it possible to create a more inclusive citizenship? The main objective of this essay is to explore the different possible ways of how to create a more inclusive society and citizenship based on the two principles of jus soli and jus sanguinis and how these principles are connected to the question of distributive justice. The method used is primarily a qualitative text analysis of academic literature. Theories in the field of political science such as theories of justice, theories of democracy- and citizenship have been implemented in the essay to achieve a more complete analysis of possible ways to create a more inclusive citizenship. The result of this research was that with inclusion follows exclusion and that it is impossible to create an inclusive citizenship from neither principles nor content. Citizenship is a human right according to The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Many theorists agree on that with citizenship there should also be freedom, rights and obligations. Therefore, a part of the study will examine how large a roll the state should play in terms of positive and negative freedom. To illustrate how the two priciples and the citizenship content can be used in real life, two contries will demonstrate how citizenship can be used in practice. The two contries are Sweden and the United States of America. The conclusion is that how to become a citizen and the question of justice are intimately connected, but that the puzzle of inclusion and exclusion can not be finally solved within the nation state.

Arbetet bygger på en kvalitativ inriktad studie med hjälp av intervjuer och en enkätundersökning.     This thesis project will evaluate which kind of electrical motor is best suited for aircraft propulsion and which parameters effect the efficiency. An economic analysis was conducted, comparing the fuel price (Jet A1) for a gas turbine and the electricity price for an electric motor of 1MW. The study was conducted by using analytical methods in MATLAB. Excel was used to compile and present the data. The data used in this thesis project were assumed with regards to similar studies or pre-determined values. The main losses for the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) were calculated to achieve a deeper understanding of the most important parameters and how these parameters need to improve to allow for future electric propulsion systems. The crucial parameters for the losses were concluded to be the temperature, voltage level, electrical frequency, magnetic flux density, size of the rotor and rotational speed. The three main losses of a PMSM was illustrated through the analytical equations used in MATLAB. The calculations present how the ohmic losses depend on the temperature (0-230°C) at different voltages (700V and 1000V), how the core losses depend on frequency (0-1000Hz) at different magnetic flux densities and how the windage losses depend on rotational speed (7000-10000 rpm). It could be concluded that at 8500 rpm an efficiency of 91,26% could be achieved at 700V, 1.5T and 90.4% at 1000V, 1.65T. The decrease in efficiency is a result of the increase in magnetic flux density. When looking at the economic viability of electrical integration the power to weight ratio and energy price was compared for the gas turbine and electrical motor including an inverter and battery. This resulted in a conclusion that a pure electrical system may not compete with a gas turbine in 30 years of time due to the low energy density of the battery. It was also concluded that the emissions during cruise could be lowered significantly. If the batteries were charged in Sweden the emissions would decrease from ~937 kg CO2 to ~31 kg CO2. If the batteries were charged in the Nordic region the emissions would decrease to ~119kg CO2. However, if the batteries were to be charged in the US the carbon dioxide emission would be ~1084 kg CO2, which is an increase in CO2 emission compared to the gas turbine.

    PREDICTION AND MEASUREMENTS OF THE GAS BUBBLES INDUCED MIXING IN A BIO-REACTOR WATER MODEL2013Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    Biogas is a fuel gaining increased interest. To be commercially viable the biogas production process needs to be further improved with advanced industrial standards where the technical, economic and environmental aspects are fully considered.

    Understanding fluid dynamics and the microbial reactions in the digestion process is necessary to accurately model and predict the biogas production. In connection with the Swedish company SvenskVäxkraft AB we focus on reactors where part of the produced gas is re-injected at the bottom to generate a strong recirculation with a gas-lift effect with a rising flow in the core. The mixture motion in this type of bio-reactors is entirely induced by the gas.

    Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to study the effect of gas plumes of bubbles in the range smaller than 10mm with a maximum local gas volume fraction lower than 10%. This study shows that considering the appropriate models to account for the added agitation and turbulence by the bubbles improves the prediction of the liquid flow characteristics. Neglecting the induced bubble effect leads to erroneous results where the radial dispersion of the gas concentration, the liquid velocity and the turbulence are significantly underestimated.

    To validate the model we performed local measurements in an experimental facility where a laboratory water-model is equipped with advanced instruments to measure the gas volume fraction as well as the liquid and gas vertical velocities.

    It was found that using the bubble induced turbulence model by Sato et al. [8] with the Tomyami models for the drag and lift forces [3-6], provides predictions in good agreement with the measured quantities.

    This study shows that for such processes where the flow is mainly created by the bubbles presence, the pseudo-turbulence (the turbulence induced by the bubbles) and the bubble size distribution need to be properly considered.

    Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka huruvida kreditgivningsprocessen har förändrats sedan revisionspliktens avskaffande samt vad detta medfört för konsekvenser för småbolag vid kreditprocessen.

    Studien har även som syfte att ta reda på hur rådgivningsföretag vägleder nystartade bolag när det kommer till kreditbehov.

    Studien har en kvalitativ forskningsmetod med semistrukturerade e-mail intervjuer som datainsamlingsmetod.

    I studiens slutsats framkom att samtliga banker var överens om att kreditgivningsprocessen inte har förändrats sedan lagändringen om slopad revisionsplikt år 2010. Dock ser bankerna olika på hur en oreviderad årsredovisning kan medföra ett informationsgap inför kreditbedömningen. Informationsgapet i sig kan leda till att bankerna kräver andra medel för att väga upp icke reviderade rapporter som en följd utav revisionens avskaffande. Beträffande rådgivningsorganisationerna fann studien en skillnad hur revisonen vägleds för de bolag som befinner sig i ett finansieringsstadium. Respondenten från Småföretagarnas riksförbund såg på oreviderade rapporter som ett icke påverkande underlag vid kreditbedömningsprocessen vars ett företags helhet bedöms. Nyföretagarcentrum ansåg dock att revisionsfrågan bör diskuteras med finansiärerna för att kunna bedöma huruvida icke reviderade rapporter har en påverkan för småbolagen vid kreditärenden.

    Sammanfattning

    Turkiet är ett land som, i takt med en stärkt ekonomi, fått ett ökat inflytande i omvärlden. Landet står dessutom i egenskap av kandidatland till EU på Europas tröskel. Men hur stark är egentligen demokratin i Turkiet och vad har landet för utsikter att utvecklas mot en konsoliderad demokrati? Genom analysfrågan:Har demokratin i det turkiska samhället stärkts under perioden 2002 till 2013? ämnar denna uppsats svara på frågeställningen: Vilka förutsättningar har samhället i Turkiet att utvecklas i riktning mot demokratisk konsolidering, sett utifrån Juan J. Linz och Alfred Stepans teori? I denna uppsats utgörs demokratisk konsolidering av tre antaganden:

    • De demokratiska institutionerna och principerna åtnjuter ett utbrett samhälleligt stöd.

    • Alla beslut som fattas och alla åtgärder som vidtas i samhället genomsyras av de demokratiska principerna och ett demokratiskt agerande.

    • De demokratiska principerna och institutionerna är så starka att de inte låter sig påverkas av större samhällsomvandlingar eller av landets ekonomiska status.

     Med det turkiska samhället avses valda delar av landets civil- samt politiska samhälle. Tidsaspekten som berörs är 2002 till 2013.

    Uppsatsen kommer fram till att demokratin i det turkiska samhället till del har stärkts. Samtidigt som det politiska samhället upplevt breda demokratiska reformer har civilsamhället i landet gått bakåt. Detta leder fram till slutsatsen att det turkiska samhällets förutsättningar för en demokratisk konsolidering i närtid bedöms som minimala. Däremot anses det turkiska samhället på sikt ha goda möjligheter till demokratisk konsolidering. Detta givet att en fortsatt vilja avseende demokratisk konsolidering finns hos landets politiker, samtidigt som EU och andra demokratiska krafter stöttar Turkiet i denna strävan.

    Abstract [en]

    Rural electrification programs usually do not consider the impact that the increment of demand has on the reliability of off-grid photovoltaic (PV)/battery systems. Based on meteorological data and electricity consumption profiles from the highlands of Bolivian Altiplano, this paper presents a modelling and simulation framework for analysing the performance and reliability of such systems. Reliability, as loss of power supply probability (LPSP), and cost were calculated using simulated PV power output and battery state of charge profiles. The effect of increasing the suppressed demand (SD) by 20% and 50% was studied to determine how reliable and resilient the system designs are. Simulations were performed for three rural application scenarios: a household, a school, and a health centre. Results for the household and school scenarios indicate that, to overcome the SD effect, it is more cost-effective to increase the PV power rather than to increase the battery capacity. However, with an increased PV-size, the battery ageing rate would be higher since the cycles are performed at high state of charge (SOC). For the health centre application, on the other hand, an increase in battery capacity prevents the risk of electricity blackouts while increasing the energy reliability of the system. These results provide important insights for the application design of off-grid PV-battery systems in rural electrification projects, enabling a more efficient and reliable source of electricity.
