Mobbning i skolan: Svenska lärares och niondeklassares bedömning av olika mobbningsformer2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Missbruk bland assyrier/syrianer: - En kvalitativ hermeneutisk studie om fem före detta missbrukare2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate a relatively unknown domain, namely the one of abuse amongst Assyrians/Syriacs. Although the community has lived in Sweden for more than 40 years and yields one for the countries larger immigrant groups, there has been little research performed addressing the question of abuse within the community. Hopefully this study will provide useful knowledge to those whom in one way or another deal with abusing Assyrians/Syriacs, such as for instance rehabilitation institutes or social welfare authorities. It might also promote a constructive debate on the issue within this specific community, which the author thinks is lacking, and to further shed light on the question of abuse in general.

By the method of qualitative study, five former abusing Assyrians/Syriacs, with backgrounds in drug substance abuse and/or gambling addiction have been studied. The primary questions have been those of how the subjects got into abusing, the time during the abuse, and how the abuse was overcome. Empirical data was collected through four individual face-to-face interviews and one via e-mail, and the resulting conclusions were drawn by relating the data to the theories of deviant behavior, labeling theory and Goldbergs deviant career model.

The main result of the study is that the respondents to various degrees have suffered a difficult childhood. In the case of many of them one parent was deceased prematurely or for others the parent was largely absent. Furthermore, some had to endure physical violence in different forms, threats, bullying, or discrimination, either in school, at home or by society. It became evident that the respondents have experienced one or several crisis in combination with grief, which has created a sense of insecurity on their lives.

The path away from abuse has been different for the individuals, although they all share having had the support from the closest family. One of the respondents became a born-again Christian and another went through various therapy rehabilitation treatments. The others have managed on their own with the support from family.

Dimensionering av grundläggning med hjälp av Eurokod2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Work to develop the Eurocodes started in 1975 by the European Commission adopted a program to eliminate trade barriers within the construction area. The goal was to create common European design standards that would replace the member countries' own rules. Eurocodes will replace The National Board of Housing Building and Planning, National Rail, The National Road Administration and other agencies' calculation rules for the buildings structures. The transition to the use of Eurocodes looks like this:

    • Eurocodes set to Swedish standards  between 2002 – 2007
    • They can be used parallel with national standards 2006 - 2009
    • The total transition is at the end of 2010/2011.

Right now is going on a lot of work for replacement of the existing standards to Eurocodes.  The transition to the new calculations` standards, many construction companies and consulting firms facing a big changes and competitions. Because of the preparations for the transition, I was commissioned by my examiners to carry out my thesis in the design of foundations by using Eurocodes. The report addresses, the design off foundations according to Eurocode SS - EN1997.

The purpose of this thesis is to point out the main changes occurring in the design of foundations of the implementation of Eurocode SS - EN1997 and the practical and financial implications that will have on the design and performing. The objective of this thesis is that it should be a basis for design and calculation of foundation.

The method of work has been to study existing and future conditions for the design of foundations, literature review and Internet searches have been made to gather information about Eurocodes, and collection of materials from my external supervisor has been made.

Below are a number of questions that will be answered in report:

    • What is the Eurocode SS - EN1997?
    • What are the advantages and disadvantages of Eurocodes?
    • What changes will occur in the design process?
    • What are the practical and economic consequences of Eurocodes for large and small companies?

Result of this work is that it can be used as a basis for design of foundation. In the capital 5 to 8 have been described the fundamental aspects of the design of foundations. Capital 9 relate to the design of various types of ground structures such as the Spread Foundation, Pile foundation and Retaining structures.

Barriers and Enablers of Knowledge Sharing: A Qualitative Study of ABB, Bombardier, Ericsson and Siemens2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis

Keywords: Knowledge, Knowledge Management, Knowledge Sharing, Factors Affecting Knowledge Sharing

Research Question: What hinders or enables knowledge sharing in Swedish-based multi-national corporations from a cultural, motivational and trust perspective?

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the barriers and enablers of knowledge sharing within multi-national corporations.

Method: The research method chosen to fulfill the purpose of the thesis is a qualitative approach. In order to achieve the purpose both primary and secondary data was sought. In accordance with the qualitative approach, interviews have been carried out with senior managers in ABB, Bombardier, Ericsson and Siemens. Data collected from these interviews represents the primary data. Secondary data has been gathered from company websites.

Conclusion: The results from the studied multi-national organizations suggest that knowledge sharing culture is influenced by communication, rules, regulations and routines (sub-factors of culture). This study shows that communication, rules, regulations and routines are enablers of knowledge sharing in the organizations. However, language and technology (sub-factors of culture) as collaborative tools are proven to be problematic; consequently creating hindrances to knowledge sharing. When it comes to motivational factors (rewards, power and reciprocity), this thesis shows that none of the studied companies offer rewards for knowledge sharing. This confirms the controversy connected with rewards which can either enable or cause hindrance to knowledge sharing. Reciprocity seems to enable knowledge sharing in the studied organizations whereas power remains controversial. The existence of power can either be a barrier or an enabler for knowledge sharing depending on the individual’s perception of power. This thesis also shows that the existence of trust enables knowledge sharing between employees, but the difficulties of building this trust is akey problem for management.

    Abstract [en]

The main issue: On the basis of the authors problem discussion has following questions came along: how will the closed companies be affected by a abolishing of demand on auditing? How could the abolishing of demand on auditing in Denmark and England relate to Swedish possible abolishing of auditing?

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine and describe how closed companies stand to abolishing of demand on auditing and which affects they think they will get.

Method: The authors have chosen to use a qualitative method. With open questions can give space for discussions, which can give the authors better understanding. The empirical material consists of eight different closed companies. The subordinate data were collected before the interview occasion, this because to develop the interview questions.

Conclusion: The authors has come to a conclusion that larger the closed company is, the more of them will keep audit. There are some concerns that the tax authority will introduce time-consuming controls for those companies who does not have audit. The banks look at the auditing as a good basic data of companies financial possibilities but yet they can see that the credit possibilities from case to case and have to adjust to the market. The economics crime authority means that the economics crimes is the largest among the small companies, and the risk for that is bigger if the demand on auditing is going to abolish. The Economic Crimes will reduce if the companies learned more about auditing, in the same time, those that want to be involved with such crimes will anyway find other solutions.

In the paper it has been comparison with how the abolishing of demand on auditing has been in Denmark and England. There has been certain similarity with Sweden. The most companies in those named countries above, thinks that the cost for audit does not exceed the benefit. In Denmark, who recently has abolished the audit demand for small companies has yet no bigger differences, but a survey has claimed that this could change in a few years. England has had since 1993 an exception from the demand on auditing and it has appeared that most companies still keep the auditing in the firm; they mean it is an advantage for them. The advantage for these companies is that auditing provides a benefit and contributes to good public information for the society, which considers to be auditing target.

Företagsrekonstruktion: En ekonomisk analys av Ågerups Grafiska AB2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Bedrock heat as an energy source

The sun has warmed up the bedrock and this heat can be used for warming up houses. Approximately 100 – 200 meters down in the bedrock the temperature of the heat is stable. This is a source of energy that can be used by installing a heat pump system. The ground source heat pumps are low maintenance and can last for many years. There is also a pollution risk for the groundwater and therefore the wells in the area. Before the ground source heat pump can be installed the municipality need to give permission, according to the environmental code. To install the system without permission is a crime against the environmental code. A requirement when applying for permission to install the heat pump system is to get the neighbours to agree with the place for the bore hole. The neighbour can appeal against the environmental and health authorities’ decision to give permission to install the ground source heat pump system. However there needs to be more research done regarding the environmental effects that may occur in the future, if the ground source heatpump system continues to increase as rapidly as today.

När den nya tekniken knackar på, öppnar kommunen då?: Den kommunala omsorgens förhållande till Giraff och tekniska hjälpmedel2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose is to gain and create an understanding of how municipalities argue at the prospect of procuring technical aids. The Buying Decision-making Process for B2B is the theoretical base. A qualitative study made up by semi-structured telephone interviews was conducted and in total there were eleven respondents. The conclusion is that on a political and managerial level there is an evident interest for new technology. Delaying factors are the scepticism of the staff and out-dated directives for negotiations. The results do however indicate that the market for technical aids will grow.

Friction as a factor in management control creation: opening up black boxes2008In: 31st annual congress of the European Accounting Association: Management Accounting (MAN), 2008Conference paper (Other scientific)
    Abstract [en]

Management accounting and management control change and design has been the topic of several studies. The traditional manner for studying such processes is to use ostensive theories like institutional theory or structuration theory – or even a combination of them both. In this paper I attempt to open up the black box of management fashion design. I argue that a new approach – a performative approach – is needed to understand this process and I propose that the management fashion theory is a suitable starting point for such studies due to its use of culture creation theorists. In accounting for the procedures of a minor and explorative R&D project which had as one of its goals to develop a management control system I visualizes how nothing turned into something. In this process I shun light on the non applicability of institutional theory as a mean of understanding these procedures.

Waves of fashion: The consuming production of management control2011Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The responsiveness of organizational leaders regarding suggestions related to various managerial techniques has led to the coinage of the ‘management fashion’ idiom. It has been convincingly argued that phenomena like management control systems are prone to trends, and that such trends permeate into the daily life of managers through the use of persuasive rhetoric.

This thesis is a theory-generating study of change in management control systems. More precisely, its purpose is to seek an understanding of how fashions within the field of management control emerge through processes of interaction and co-production. By asking the question “how do the forces involved in the shaping of a market for management control systems interact and combine in order to create management fashions?” the thesis seeks to generate a comprehensive conjecture on the management fashion setting process.

The thesis is based on an empirical case study completed with extensive literature readings. In order to generate theory, a methodology based on abductive reasoning has been produced. Theoretically, the thesis borrows from micro sociological theory on imitation and co-production but extends also into such fields as psychology, aesthetics, rhetoric and economics; aside from the obvious management control and management accounting themes.

The thesis concludes by producing a comprehensive model of the management fashion setting process. The contribution of the thesis can be understood as either providing an alternative to or completing the dominant interpretation of the phenomena. The main difference between the arrived at suggestion and the prevailing interpretation is the role of the actors which is changed from norm following consumers of fashion to creative producers of fashion. This change represents a change in scientific traditions and necessitates the adoption of additional frames of reference when studying management fashion phenomena.

Fiskfaunan i Ekeby våtmark2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Spårvagnstrafik i Västerås?: En förstudie i förutsättningarna för modern spårvagnstrafik2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

County and local traffic trade association Swedish Public Transport Association's goal by 2010 is to double the travel by public transport from 2006 years figures. Such a change will not happen by itself; a systematic effort will be required to create an attractive public transport. A more recent development of public transport is that several Swedish cities

have more or less advanced plans to introduce trams. This thesis work aims to investigate the preconditions of a tram establishment in Västerås. The work is divided into literature study, case study, questionnaire survey and interview. The initial literature study summarizes general information regarding light rail design, construction, costs and financing options. The study also ties in with previous studies in the area to gain useful experience. The case study examines Västerås conditions for trams. The conditions are then used to establish a system proposal of a line system for tram with the associated operational and investment costs. The questionnaire study describes Västerås residents attitudes to a hypothetical proposal for the introduction of light rail transit as part of the city's public transport system.  The interview study resulted in the literature study being supplemented by experiences from an active actor within the tram industry. The thesis analyzes all of the studies individually and then as a unit. Finally, the authors’ own conclusions are presented.

Fejkade orgasmer och Spruckna anus: En studie om konstruktionen av kvinnlig sexualitet i livsstilsmagasinen Slitz och Cosmopolitan2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Molecular studies of the γ-secretase complex activity and selectivity towards the two substrates APP and Notch2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Alzheimer Disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder in the world. One of the neuropathological hallmarks of AD is the senile plaques in the brain. The plaques are mainly composed of the amyloid β (Aβ) peptide. Aβ is generated from the amyloid precursor protein, APP, when it is first cleaved by the β-secretase and subsequently the γ-secretase complex. The γ-secretase complex cleaves at different sites, called γ and ε, where the γ-cleavage site generates Aβ peptides of different lengths and ε-cleavage generates the APP intracellular domain (AICD). The two major forms of Aβ is 40 and 42 amino acids long peptides, where the latter is more prone to aggregate and is the main component in senile plaques. The γ-secretase complex is composed of four proteins; Pen-2, Aph-1, nicastrin and presenilin (PS). The PS protein harbours the catalytic site of the complex, where two aspartate residues in position 257 and 385 (Presenilin 1 numbering) are situated. Most Familial AD (FAD) mutations in the PS gene cause a change in the γ-cleavage site, leading to a shift from producing Aβ40 to the longer more toxic variant Aβ42. Frequently, this often leads to impairments of the AICD production. Another substrate for the γ-secretase complex is Notch. It is important to maintain the Notch signaling since an intracellular domain (NICD) is formed after cleavage by the γ-secretase complex in the membrane (S3-site) and this domain is involved in transcription of genes important for cell fate decisions.

It has been reported that certain APP luminal juxtamembrane mutations could drastically alter Aβ secretion, however their effect on AICD production remains unknown. In this study we want to analyse wether the juxtamembrane region is important for the AICD production. To gain more insight into the luminal juxtamembrane function for γ-secretase-dependent proteolysis, we have made a juxtamembrane chimeric construct. A four-residue sequence preceding the transmembrane domain (TMD) of APP (GSNK), was replaced by its topological counterpart from the human Notch1 receptor (PPAQ). The resulting chimeric vector C99GVP-PPAQ and the wildtype counterpart were expressed in cells lacking PS1 and PS2 (BD8) together with PS1wt. We observed that the chimeric construct did not alter production of AICD when using a cell based luciferase reporter gene assay monitoring AICD production. We also introduced a PS1 variant lacking a big portion of the large hydrophilic loop, PS1∆exon10, since our group has previously observed that this region affect Aβ production143. We found that the absence of the large hydrophilic loop in PS1 gave a 2-fold decrease in AICD-GVP formation from C99GVPwt compared to PS1wt.  The activity of PS1wt and PS1Δexon10 using C99GVP-PPAQ as a substrate gave similar result as the C99GVPwt substrate, i.e. a 2-fold decrease in AICD-GVP formation when comparing PS1Δexon10 with PS1wt. From this data we therefore suggest that the four residues in the juxtramembrane domain (JMD) (GSNK) is not altering ε-cleavage of APP when changed to Notch1 counterpart, PPAQ. Furthermore, we also show that the 2-fold decrease in AICD-production by the PS1Δexon10 molecule is not changed between the two substrates C99GVPwt and C99GVP-PPAQ. This indicates that the luminal region of APP is not directly involved in the ε-site processing. If the luminal region is affecting processing in the γ-cleavage sites, remains however to be investigated.

Identifiering av insektsöverförda organismer i blod hos klövvilt.: Undersökning, bestämning och identifiering av Rickettsia och Trypanosoma i blod hos vilda klövdjur i Södermanlan, Sverige.2010Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Golfens IT-system: förändrade interaktioner2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Inlagd av Fredrik Barthel2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Boosting behavioral change in residential electricity consumption: demand response programs and feedback2011Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

As part of realizing national and European climate ambitions, it is imperative to bring about increased energy efficiency and consumption flexibility in the residential sector of the Swedish power market. In addition to governmental policy instruments to this end, market-based measures play an important role in making behavioral change in domestic electricity use happen. In light of the prevailing lack of incentives for residential consumers to save electricity and cut peak demand at times of physical and financial market constraints, the research studies that form the basis of this thesis have the aim of adding to the body of knowledge on policy instruments for the purpose of boosting behavioral change in residential electricity consumption. The research has accordingly contributed to the general statistics on residential electricity consumption, which constitute the starting point for policy instrument development, and augmented knowledge on the merits of residential demand response programs involving hourly settlements in power trading and demand-based, time-of-use tariffs in power distribution as well as graphic feedback on individual households’ electricity use by means of a statistics service provided over the Internet.

The overall results have shown that household behavior, together with physical factors such as heating systems, help explain the sizeable differences in electricity consumption among homeowners. Statistical analysis of variance has in this context proven to be an effective method for identifying key indicators of policy development. Power suppliers and electricity consumers as well as society as a whole have been found to gain substantially from hourly settlements in retail. To suppliers, the greatest benefits are associated with risk management, while the major advantage to customers is that they are provided with an opportunity to reduce their electricity costs. It has also been empirically demonstrated that electricity users are willing to adjust their consumption to a demand-based, time-varying distribution tariff. Households generally have a favorable attitude towards this type of distribution tariff, seeing as they indirectly have a positive impact on the environment. Providing households with feedback over the Internet on their individual electricity use and demand has been shown to contribute to an increased awareness and lead to energy efficiency in homes. Easy accessibility and simplicity have proven to be key success factors in this context. Combining conventional bar charts, color symbolism and historic feedback is expedient in this respect.

Visualisering av elanvändning i flerbostadshus: Delrapport inom ELAN Etapp III2011Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Visualisering av elanvändning i flerbostadshus: Slutrapport inom ELAN Etapp III2011Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Potential of hourly settlements in the residential sector of the Swedish electricity market: Estimations of risk reduction and economic result2010In: International Journal of Green Energy, ISSN 1543-5075, E-ISSN 1543-5083, Vol. 7, no 3, p. 224-240Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Increased demand response is essential in order to boost the effectiveness of the Swedish power market. The all-embracing installation of automatic meter reading systems enables power suppliers to introduce hourly settlements in the residential sector. The aim of the study has been to assess the impact of electricity retailers’ physical and financial risk in customer segments with different heating systems as well as to estimate the potential of the electricity contract ”Fixed price with the right to return” in terms of economic consequences and risk management. The results show that households whose main heating system consists of a geothermal heat pump constitute the largest physical price and volume risk of suppliers. The gain of introducing hourly settlements in the residential electricity market has furthermore proven to be manifold from both an economic and risk reducing point of view.

Exploring variance in residential electricity consumption: Household features and building properties2012In: Applied Energy, ISSN 0306-2619, E-ISSN 1872-9118, Vol. 92, p. 637-643Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Improved means of controlling electricity consumption plays an important part in boosting energy efficiency in the Swedish power market. Developing policy instruments to that end requires more in-depth statistics on electricity use in the residential sector, among other things. The aim of the study has accordingly been to assess the extent of variance in annual electricity consumption in single-family homes as well as to estimate the impact of household features and building properties in this respect using independent samples t-tests and one-way as well as univariate independent samples analyses of variance. Statistically significant variances associated with geographic area, heating system, number of family members, family composition, year of construction, electric water heater and electric underfloor heating have been established. The overall result of the analyses is nevertheless that variance in residential electricity consumption cannot be fully explained by independent variables related to household and building characteristics alone. As for the methodological approach, the results further suggest that methods for statistical analysis of variance are of considerable value in indentifying key indicators for policy update and development.

    Abstract [en]

In light of global warming, energy conservation is indispensable. Residential electricity use, nevertheless, escapes consumers’ notice. Thus feedback is essential, yet households’ access to information is vastly limited. Smart metering renders continuous feedback over the Internet possible, but users perceive existing web tools to be inaccessible and incomprehensible. Hence the aim has been to design a user interface so as to serve the purpose of increasing awareness and energy efficiency in households. Ease of access and straightforwardness have been established as key factors and conventional bar charts in combination with color symbolism have proven to be useful in this respect.

Introducing a demand-based electricity distribution tariff in the residential sector: demand response and customer perception2011In: Energy Policy, ISSN 0301-4215, E-ISSN 1873-6777, Vol. 39, no 9, p. 5008-5025Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Increased demand response is essential to fully exploit the Swedish power system, which in turn is an absolute prerequisite for meeting political goals related to energy efficiency and climate change. Demand response programs are, nonetheless, still exceptional in the residential sector of the Swedish electricity market, one contributory factor being lack of knowledge about the extent of the potential gains. In light of these circumstances, this empirical study set out with the intention of estimating the scope of households’ response to, and assessing customers’ perception of, a demand-based time-of-use electricity distribution tariff. The results show that households as a whole have a fairly high opinion of the demand-based tariff and act on its intrinsic price signals by decreasing peak demand in peak periods and shifting electricity use from peak to off-peak periods.

Title: Barriers to the implementation of E-learning system with focus on organizational culture

Introduction: Nowadays, Information Technology has become a necessity for businesses not only to gain competitive advantage but also to survive. Strategic use of new educational technologies can enhance learning and teaching process. In order to stay viable in this intense competitive environment, providers of education and trainings have developed efficient and effective learning environment, called E-learning. However with the success there also exist barriers containing the cultural aspects of the organizations throughout the implementation process.

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to describe and analyze critical factors which may affect the implementation of E-learning system with a special focus on organizational culture.

Research Question: What are the critical barriers of implementing E-learning system and what is the role of organizational culture in successful implementation of E-learning system?

Research design:  This research is based on a qualitative approach and based on secondary data collection method. The required literature has been obtained by searching Mälardalen University’s library. Furthermore, authors have used online library (ebrary) as well as other libraries’ databases such as Elin, Emerald, Eric and EBSCO. Reference books from university library were also used in the course of the research. The data has been extracted from articles which are title base keywords search criteria were used for searching articles. Our research is exploratory and based on the Interactive model which consists of three activities which are data reduction, data display, and conclusion. Research analysis emphasizes more on comparing various authors’ view to analyze and describe the critical barriers and role of organizational culture to successfully employ E-learning system in organizations.

Target audience: This research provides a general guidance to the readers and organizations interested in E-learning initiative and for those who have already implemented E-learning.

Conclusion: This research elicited and examined a number of various points of views about the barriers of implementing E-learning system in organizations. Within organization, bridging education is challenging if the organizational culture is unwilling to accept an E-learning initiative. Finally it was suggested that by behavioral change and by motivating the employees can new vitality and momentum can be brought for implementation success. Organization should underpin their implementation strategy of E-learning system proactively to reap the maximum benefits.

EVALUATING THE IMPORTANCE OF A STRUCTURED METHODOLOGY BY MANAGEMENT OF CRITICAL RISK/FAILURE FACTORS IN ERP IMPLEMENTATION2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Studies in recent years have revealed the challenges involved in deploying ERP solutions due to its complexity. Before attempting to implement ERP systems, it is essential to study various aspects such as project management, training, and change management in detail to manage the associated risks. When an ERP project is undertaken with insufficient planning, it may result in failure to integrate business processes and in substantial financial loss. Research has been pursued to identify critical risk/failure factors that may arise during implementation and the measures that should be taken to manage them. However, there is lack of research in identifying the management of critical risk/failure factor using a structured methodology. This raises a question of ‘can a structured methodology identify and manage critical risk/failure factors and support deploying ERP solutions with a better quality?’ A study of Microsoft Sure Step Methodology is performed to identify critical risk/failure factors that frequently occur during ERP implementation. These factors are derived from 8 articles. On determining critical risk/failure factors, we investigated if Sure Step methodology likely contains procedures that approach these factors.

Genetic and phenotypic characterization of trypanosomas2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Trypanosoma theileri, of the subgenus Megatrypanum, a non-pathogenic cosmopolitan blood dwelling parasite of bovine. T. theileri can be cultured at room temperature in several culture media.

Blood samples were collected from deer's. To see if the blood was infected with trypanosomes it was cultivated in 2 ml sheep blood or cell cultivation medium DMEM with antibiotics.

Growth was detected by microscopy to see if there were any trypanosomes.

To determine the species of trypanosomes that was in the deer blood a DNA-preparation was done before a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) could be done. With sequencing the trypanosomes where determined to be Trypanosoma theileri.

Different tests were made to see in what way the trypanosomes best were caught to the objective slides.

Forty samples of borrelia positive serum from forty different patients were tested with the fluorescent microscopy. Forty different samples from blood donors were tested the same way.

Blood samples from 16 different fissiped were taken and to see if they were infected with trypanosomes. Three different PCR's were done on the 16 blood samples.

A small test on human blood was also performed.

Protein identification by immunoblot with western blot and silver staining was done.

With the electron microscopy tests were done in the ordinary way and Critical Dry Point to see if both of the techniques worked.

Enzyme-Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay (ELISA) test were accomplished on two 96 well plates. The wells on the plates were diluted in different ways before they were processed.

”Delad börda är hälften så tung”  Delat ledarskap – ur ett ledar- och medarbetarperspektiv2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine shared leadership from a management and employee perspective of a government aistration. We wanted answers to how the leaders work together and divide the tasks among themselves and how the employees experience this. We also examined how communication experienced by parties involved. Our method to achieve this have been qualitative with the inductive approach in which we survey questions to both leaders as a selection of group employees, received answers to questions concerning trust and labor division, and how communication works. The responses from the respondents give a coherent picture of that it works very well. This image is also of the employee survey conducted in the organization in December 2008. We note that the biggest difference with shared leadership, compared with traditional leadership is that they are two leaders. In our investigated group of respondents replied that shared leadership is an advantage mainly for leaders, as they can juggle issues and support each other and that a prerequisite for success is that the interaction between the leaders work, which we have received indications that it is in our investigated group. Concern that a divided leadership would be seen as unclear was not true. Employees were split between the leaders of performance review etc and all seem satisfied with this. The leaders who share the leadership experience that environment is curious about the shared leadership and sees many benefits in it. We believe that the shared leadership will grow in scale as the leadership today is complex, the pace of change in society has increased and to be sole leader rips. Shared burden is half as heavy.

A Case-Based Decision Support System for Individual Stress Diagnosis Using Fuzzy Similarity Matching2009In: Computational intelligence, ISSN 0824-7935, E-ISSN 1467-8640, Vol. 25, no 3, p. 180-195Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Stress diagnosis based on finger temperature signals is receiving increasing interest in the psycho-physiological domain. However, in practice, it is difficult and tedious for a clinician and particularly less experienced clinicians to understand, interpret and analyze complex, lengthy sequential measurements in order to make a diagnosis and treatment plan. The paper presents a case-based decision support system to assist clinicians in performing such tasks. Case-based reasoning is applied as the main methodology to facilitate experience reuse and decision explanation by retrieving previous similar temperature profiles. Further fuzzy techniques are also employed and incorporated into the case-based reasoning system to handle vagueness, uncertainty inherently existing in clinicians reasoning as well as imprecision of feature values. Thirty nine time series from 24 patients have been used to evaluate the approach (matching algorithms) and an expert has ranked and estimated similarity. On average goodness-of-fit for the fuzzy matching algorithm is 90% in ranking and 81% in similarity estimation which shows a level of performance close to an experienced expert. Therefore, we have suggested that a fuzzy matching algorithm in combination with case-based reasoning is a valuable approach in domains where the fuzzy matching model similarity and case preference is consistent with the views of domain expert. This combination is also valuable where domain experts are aware that the crisp values they use have a possibility distribution that can be estimated by the expert and is used when experienced experts reason about similarity. This is the case in the psycho-physiological domain and experienced experts can estimate this distribution of feature values and use them in their reasoning and explanation process.

The challenge of marketing water filters in Uganda2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Title: The challenge of marketing water filters in Uganda

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to assess why sales of the water filter (CrystalPur) is stagnant. The authors will investigate the viability of the approach used to market CrystalPur with help of the marketing mix after which necessary adjustments best fitted for the Ugandan market will be suggested.

Method: This research takes a qualitative approach. Data collection method used was both interviews and documentation. Telephone interviews were conducted with the management of ATU, schools and health centers that have received the filter as a donation. The secondary data used were articles, related studies and books. Since it is a research based on a qualitative approach, the theories and the findings is synthesized to make implication regarding the study.

Conclusions: The investigation has shown that the target customers are not buying the filter because they doubt its functionality of providing safe water which has thus hindered its acceptance rate. Boiling water is the accepted method which thus makes filtering disadvantaged. Also the filters performance does not meet the expectation of the respondents due its fragility and slow flow rate. The price of the filter was shown to be very expensive and unaffordable by the target group. The channels used to create awareness are not effective due to the low literacy rate affecting the level of understanding. Lastly, the underdeveloped distribution channels have not enabled easy accessibility of the product.

How Nelo´s image is perceived in Germany: An empirical investigation amongst their agents2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this research was to investigate how the German market is segmented and what the German consumers perceive of Nelo’s positioning by assessment of what the Agents corroborate. The insights derived from it points out if Nelo’s image is rightly perceived in the German market.

In this paper a qualitative approach is used. Data collection method used was both interviews and documentation. Telephone interviews were conducted with three different agents operating in southern Germany. The secondary data the authors used were articles and books. Since it is a research based on a qualitative approach, the theories and the findings will be synthesized to make implication regarding the study.

The investigation has shown that the target segment for Nelo in Germany are the middle to high income group in the age 40+, but it is shown that the products offered by Nelo don’t attract this segment in southern Germany. Though product quality is good the design and material used, does not fit with the target customer rendering the brand unknown. Nelo is not well positioned in the target market because it has not been successful in communicating a clear image. To conclude Nelo´s position is not consistent with their image.

Verklighetsutflykten: En narrativ och diskurspsykologisk analys av lajv och dess roll i individens identitetsarbete2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]
