    Abstract [en]

    A new simple approximation that can be used for modeling of one type of Sommerfeld integrals typically occurring in the expressions that describe sources buried in the lossy ground, is proposed in the paper. The ground is treated as a linear, isotropic and homogenous medium of known electrical parameters. Proposed approximation has a form of a weighted exponential function with an additional complex constant term. The derivation procedure of this approximation is explained in detail, and the validation is done applying it in the analysis of a bare conductor fed in the center and immersed in the lossy ground at arbitrary depth. Wide range of ground and geometry parameters of interest has been taken into consideration.

    Abstract [en]

    Vibration analysis and the Shock Pulse Method (SPM) are two of the most popular condition monitoring techniques used in Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) policy, especially for rotating equipment. To illustrate the extent to which advanced CBM techniques (in this case, vibration analysis and SPM) are applicable and cost effective in a manufacturing company, a pilot pro-ject was followed in real time. The pilot project was performed at a large manu-facturing site in Sweden. The purpose of the project was to implement online condition monitoring of five critical gas circulation fans in the hardening pro-cess of the manufacturing company. This paper presents some of the main findings of the online condition monitor-ing of the fans for a period of two years. Consequently, based on the empirical data, the company was able to gain great profit due to preventing production losses by preventing breakdowns of the fans.

    Abstract [en]

    The first objective of this research has always been carry out a study of visual techniques SLAM (Simultaneous localization and mapping), specifically the type monovisual, less studied than the stereo. These techniques have been well studied in the world of robotics. These techniques are focused on reconstruct a map of the robot enviroment while maintaining its position information in that map. We chose to investigate a method to encode the points by the inverse of its depth, from the first time that the feature was observed. This method permits efficient and accurate representation of uncertainty during undelayed initialization and beyond, all within the standard extended Kalman filter (EKF).At first, the study mentioned it should be consolidated developing an application that implements this method. After suffering various difficulties, it was decided to make use of a platform developed by the same author of Slam method mentioned in MATLAB. Until then it had developed the tasks of calibration, feature extraction and matching. From that point, that application was adapted to the characteristics of our camera and our video to work. We recorded a video with our camera following a known trajectory to check the calculated path shown in the application. Corroborating works and studying the limitations and advantages of this method.

    Abstract 

    Eskilstuna Strängnäs Energi och Miljö is an energy company that provides electricity to its customers in the Eskilstuna and Strängnäs region. The company is currently facing stability problems in its electrical grid caused by a change in load patterns and increased implementation of renewable energy sources. Research has shown that batteries can provide flexibility which allows stabilisation on these evolving grids. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate how a grid connected battery and its inverter can provide stability in a distribution grid where the production of electricity suddenly changes. To get the results that were requested, a simscape-MATLAB model was used, which follows the IEEE requirements for inverter-based resources. The results from the simulation were presented in multiple graphs and revealed the capability of a battery to restore a balance between production and consumption of electricity very quickly. The results also showed that a grid forming inverter provides a faster response from the battery, allowing it to stabilize the grid faster than a grid following inverter. The results showed that the grid forming inverter is more suitable for the future electrical grid that is getting weaker than the grid following inverter

    Abstract [en]

    This study investigates how Human Factors (HF) is applied when designing and developing Immersive Visual Technologies (IVT), including Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality, and Virtual Reality. We interviewed fourteen people working at different organizations, that develop IVT applications in the Nordic region. We used thematic analysis to derive themes from the interviews. The results showed an insufficient knowledge and application of HF in IVT development, due to the lack of awareness of both scope and significance of HF, resource allocation strategy, market inertia, stakeholder's involvement, standardization of HF application and IVT uses, and technology maturity. This situation could be improved by allocating experts, adjusting organizational strategy to balance resource allocation, training developers and user organizations to raise awareness and to encourage co-creative design and knowledge sharing, create a sense of ownership amongst stakeholders, and ensure the usefulness of the technology to the user's work.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper, we present the latest design of a magnetic field applicator designed to expose a dielectric body to electromagnetic microwave radiation by means of a magnetic near-field for microwave imaging purposes. Numerical simulations show that unwanted surface waves created from electric fringing fields of the applicator can be separated from the desired fields inside the breast due to their different polarizations. The applicator working principle is demonstrated in an experimental measurement setup with three different tissue-mimicking loads. A propagating electromagnetic wave is invoked directly inside the load based on its dielectric properties, leading to a decreasing reflection coefficient with increasing load permittivity, which could be verified in numerical simulations and experimental measurements.

    This chapter focuses on the LSTM model and is concerned with the design of a high-performance and energy-efficient solution to implement deep learning inference. The chapter is organized as follows: Section 2.1 introduces Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs). In this section Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) network models are discussed as special kind of RNNs. Section 2.2 discusses inference acceleration with hardware. In Section 2.3, a survey on various FPGA designs is presented within the context of the results of previous related works and after which Section 2.4 concludes the chapter.

    En RMRC, Rail Mounted Railway Crane, är en kran för hantering av containertrafik till och från järnvägsvagnar. Kranen som är helt manuellt styrd utrustas med en semiautomatik som hjälper operatören att positionera kranen. Målpositionen för containern kommer från terminalens logistiksystem. För positioneringen har en lämplig regulator tagits fram som tar hänsyn till den mekaniska påverkan på motorer och växellådor som finns vid acceleration och retardation. Regulatorn har tagits fram och testats i en simuleringsmiljö. Den har sedan implementerats i ett PLC-system och provkörts i labmiljö med PLC och motorer. Regulatorn har förbättrad prestanda jämfört med den regulator som tidigare använts för andra typer av kranar. Den är också lättare att trimma in vid idriftsättning.För positionsåterföringen på de tre rörelserna lyft, tralla och kranåk, har olika typer av givare undersökts och rekommenderat.

    Jag har i denna uppsats studerat problemet med att man förlorar mycket upp- märksamhet när man använder hörselskydd i bullriga industrimiljöer. Förlusten av uppärmsamheten kan leda till små och stora skador, men även i vissa fall dödsolockor.

    I denna uppsats har jag presenterat en potentiell lösning till detta problem och även en prototyp av denna lösning. Prototypen består av en sändardel som fästes på fordonet och sedan en mottagardel som fästes på personens härselkå- por.

    Denna uppsats är ett examensarbete på 15hp, Basic level 300, för examen som Högskoleingengör inom Mekatronik på Mälardalens Högskola.

    Jag fann detta projekt mycket lärorikt och även intressant. Jag ser detta som en potentiell lösning på ett befintligt problem ute på marknaden.

    A novel method for detecting uavs using parallelneural networks with re-inference2022Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    In this paper, we present a novel method for detecting UAVs using diverse parallel neural networks with re-inference. The parallel networks are of type Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). We first set up a lowthreshold (2 respectively 20%) for each of the individual networks to detect a flying object. If all networks detecta flying object in the same area of a video frame with some overlap, we zoom into that area and redo the objectdetection and classification (re-inference step). To ensure correctness and reliability of the results from severalparallel CNNs, we introduce total confidence Tc as a measurement. We also introduce the intersection overunion for multiple parallel networks, IoUAll , and use that as threshold for calculating a reliable Tc . The resultsshow great improvements regarding accurate detection of flying drones, reduced mispredictions of otherobjects as drones, and fast response time when drones disappear from the scene.

    Abstract [en]

    Agrivoltaic systems work on the principle of combining farmland with Photovoltaic energy conversion giving the land it sits on dual purpose. Moreover, by combining solar electricity conversion and crop production additional benefits such as water saving and, in some cases even higher crop yields compared to open field conditions. For this technology to be wildly implemented a deeper understanding on the effects the agrivoltaic system has on the underlying farmland is required. In this work, an IoT sensor station used for monitoring albedo, temperature, and humidity inside an agrivoltaic system is developed. The work is carried out through researching and testing electrical components that is to be used inside of the monitoring station as well as development of the code used by the microcontroller to communicate between the different sensors. The prototype station was then tested a total of three times at Kärrbo Prästgård and the gathered data compared with pre-installed sensors located at the testing site. After each test run the IoT stations performance was analyzed for potential improvements to be implemented before subsequent tests. The final design of monitoring station showed a high accuracy in the albedo data during daytime with some deviations during early mornings and late afternoon due to the inherit limitations in the sensitivities of the electrical components used to measure solar radiation.

    Abstract [en]

    Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy can be used for characterizing and monitoring the state of batteries. However, the difficulty in the onboard acquisition limits its wide applications. This work proposes a new method to obtain the impedance spectrum by using convolutional neural network, which uses the impedance measured at several characteristic frequencies as input. The characteristic frequencies are determined according to the time constants corresponding to the characteristic peaks and valleys of contact polarization and solid electrolyte interphase growth processes from the distribution of relaxation time. The proposed method is validated based on the dataset which contains the impedance spectra of eight batteries over the whole life cycle. The predictions coincide with the ground truth, with a maximum root mean square error of 0.93 mΩ. The developed method can also be quickly adapted to acquire the impedance spectrum of other batteries with different chemistries and be used for predictions of various battery states based on the transfer learning approach.

    Abstract [en]

    ASSA AB develops different types of products that can be used in or around doors. ASSA offers a complete door solution to the customers. Many of these products are linked together and work for a complete formation of access control. ASSA has recently developed a new communications bus for some of their products. One advantage of the new communication bus is that each product should be able to offer different kinds of added values to the customers.

    This master thesis main focus is to find a model to describe the predicted life length of ASSA:s motor lock called 811C50, which includes a study that determine which environmental parameters that can affects the motor locks life length. This master thesis is also a pre-study for further work of an existing motor lock.

    The chosen test model, full parameter test, leads to a life length equation. This equation shall later on be implemented in the motor locks so the motor locks itself can predict its own life length. To make the equation completed different parameters, that can affect the motor locks life length, are needed. This can be implemented through different technological tests and to succeed with the test, right test equipment is needed. No establish test equipment was available, which required that new test equipment, which could test all motor locks, were build. On the bases from interviews with engineers at ASSA it was established that the following parameters probably can affect the motor locks life length: temperature, air humidity, dust, corrosion, side load and vibration. Not until certain factors and coefficients have been determined, for the equation, can the equation be used.

    Software Product Line Engineering has reached a phase of evolution that has turned the Software Product Lines into more accessible and easier to use not only for those who are rigorouslyspecialized in using them but for everyone. We acknowledge all the benefits gained from this methodology and all the existing contributions given by different authors over time since its discovery. Itsmassive usage initiated the development of a new approach that was specifically designed to handlethe variability of the Software Product Lines called Variability Modeling. The most known technique of Variability Modeling for developing Software products turned out to be Feature Modelingbecause it was seen that the usage of features made the modeling process easier, so they becamethe primary thing to be dealt with. The modeling engineers decided on using feature diagrams toinclude and present these features.However, more complicated scenarios in the Software Product Lines were faced with its massivegrowth and usage, so the Variability Modeling was now identified as Complex Variability Modelingand is taken under study by this thesis work. The wide spectrum of Variability Modeling is definedby different aspects such as modeling approaches and languages, software product family requirements, the applicability in industry, and the extraction and expressiveness of commonalities andvariabilities in Variability Models.     Circular Business Models for Electric Vehicle Battery Second Life: Challenges, enablers, and preconditions from an ecosystem perspective2023Licentiatavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

    Sustainability has become a critical issue due to global warming, scarcity of resources, and the high costs of raw materials. It is vital to reconsider linear business models and value creation processes and transition towards circularity. The growth of the electric vehicles market is promising; however, it comes with a major downside. Soon there will be a considerable number of used batteries without the original capacity and potentially hazardous that cannot go to landfill due to environmental and economic reasons. In this regard, the use of electric vehicle batteries in second life (EVBSL) is suggested as a solution. EVBSL comes with benefits such as the extension of the battery life cycle, extracting value from the remaining capacity of the battery, reduction in the upfront costs of the electric vehicle, and create new revenue streams for the companies. And since various actors are involved in EVBSL, it is essential to study this phenomenon from an ecosystem perspective.

    Despite the recent focus of researchers on EVBSL, there are several gaps in the current literature on this topic. The first gap concerns the challenges and enablers of implementing circular business models (CBMs) for EVBSL. The second gap concerns the second life operations of electric vehicles (EV). There is a lack of research on the solutions that can guide the ecosystem actors to manage EVBSL-related activities. And the third gap concerns the limited research on the preconditions of circular business model innovation for the EVBSL that focuses on the transition from linear business models to CBMs. Therefore, this thesis aims to develop knowledge of the factors that influence the implementation of CBMs for EVBSL from an ecosystem perspective.

    This study intends to address these gaps by conducting qualitative research. An exploratory research design has been deemed adequate due to its flexibility and compatibility. This research draws on the existing literature on the second life of EV batteries, and circular business models. In total, 20 interviews and 15 workshops have been conducted covering 15 companies in the EVBSL ecosystem. Purposeful sampling was employed to select the EVBSL ecosystem actors with the aim of covering the key actors such as OEMs, battery manufacturer, recycling companies, remanufacturers, energy utility companies, material supplier for battery parts, construction and housing company, and public transportation companies. The collected data was analyzed via qualitative methods such as thematic analysis. 

    The results of this study have led to the identification of nine key challenges and seven key enablers. Moreover, two dimensions (i.e., time frame and responsible entity) are identified from the empirical data, through which companies can structurally categorize and work with the identified key challenges and enablers. Based on this, a guiding framework is suggested that could support firms in the EV battery ecosystem to establish and manage various configurations for second-life operations in a series of phases such as firm-level initiation, ecosystem construction, firm-level optimization, and ecosystem orchestration. Finally, the current linear business models (traditional sales of products and services, product maintenance and support, R&D, consultancy, and services), upcoming CBMs (regenerating, looping, and sharing), and the preconditions (for value creation, capture, and delivery) for the circular business model innovation are extracted. 

    This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge in several ways. It enhances the current literature on challenges and enablers of EVBSL by covering various actors in this ecosystem and extends the knowledge on the scope of these factors. Moreover, this study is the first one that suggests a guiding framework for the ecosystem actors through configurations for second-life operations while shedding light on the preconditions of circular business innovation for EVBSL. This study also provides interesting insights for practitioners and managers in the EVBSL ecosystem.

    Abstract [en]

    Background: Testing is an integral component of the software development process. It demands both time and resources. Model-based testing (MBT) is a testing strategy that automates the testing process and generates test cases using formal models. In this way, model-based testing enables its users to efficiently manage and complete testing tasks while keeping costs to a minimum. Online MBT is a subset of MBT that runs models against the Software Under Test (SUT) in real-time, enabling continuous testing and early problem identification. For testing complicated software systems, online MBT can be especially helpful. Numerous open-source online MBT tools have been created in recent years to facilitate online MBT activities.  

    Objectives: This study aims to conduct a systematic mapping study of the online test generation capabilities of open-source model-based testing tools. The purpose of this study is to present the current online Model-based testing tools; to investigate the actual solution provided by online Model-based testing tools; to present the research topics addressed in relation to online MBT tools; to present the online MBT tools' capabilities in terms of model specification, test generation, test description, and overall support; and to present the pros and cons of the aforementioned online MBT tools.

    Method: To achieve the study's objective, the author conducted a systematic mapping study of the relevant literature. A systematic mapping study on online MBT tools was presented. In this study, research questions, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the snowballing technique were employed; however, this study was limited to a classification of online MBT tools, and the systematic mapping study was used to analyze online MBT tools based on the actual solution provided, research topics addressed, MBT tools capabilities in terms of model specification and test generation, as well as their advantages and disadvantages.

    Results: One of the most studied online MBT tools, Uppaal, was renowned for its capacity to simplify the SUT model's structural complexity during test production. Other research areas in model-based testing included distributed online test generation, model-checking techniques to test suite generation, and hybrid online testing for communication-based railway control systems. Using model-based methodologies, researchers also investigated automated test-suite execution, on-the-fly testing, and multilingual website testing. The main disadvantage of using online MBT tools was the need for additional research to ensure proper library functionality and the potential for producing test suites with unreasonable characteristics. The benefits of using online MBT tools included significant performance improvements and increased accuracy in uncertainty quantification.

    Conclusion: These findings can assist the research community in identifying the current online MBT tools, solutions, research topics, advantages, disadvantages, and research gaps on online MBT tools, as well as possible future research directions.

    This thesis aims first to investigate whether solar panels on the container can provide the process of desalination with energy at the desired location, as well as to dimension a photovoltaic system and battery storage that can run the facility off-grid. Then investigate whether solar cells can be an effective energy solution for Millennium Desalination Device (MDD).

    The results of this study show that the most annual solar production from containers is 11 510 kWh in Gobabeb, Namibia with a modular efficiency of 22,8 %, which corresponds to 8,2 % operating time per year and is the longest operating time that can be obtained from the all three scenarios. This means that with existing technology and only solar panels on the container, desalination plant is impossible to drive all year round off-grid.

    The installed power for driving 100 % operating time for one year is 141 kW in Gobabeb and 179 kW in Visby, the corresponding module surface will be lowest 618 m2 and 1184 m2 with modular efficiency of 22,8 %, but there are no additional spaces for all equipment like MDD, solar cells and battery in the container. If the operating time drops to 50 %, the installed power will be 71 kW in Gobabeb, the corresponding module surface will be lowest 415 m2 and battery storage capacity will be at least 160 kWh. Net volume with all equipment will be less than the volume of the container.

    The cost will be at least 0.2 Swedish kronor per liter of pure water produced with a life of 25 year for solar modules. Usage fee per liter of delivered water is 0.03 Swedish kronor in Gotland and it means MDD is not a cost-effective solution for Gotland at nowadays. But costs may fall in the future with the price reduction of solar cells and batteries. For water shortage areas, this can be a valuable way to solve the water crisis, but it also depends mostly on the area’s water price.

    Increasing the deployment of Renewable Energy Resources (RES) , along with innovations in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), would allow prosumers to engage in the energy market and trade their excess energy with each other and with the main grid. To ensure an efficient and safe operation of energy trading, the Peer-to-Peer (P2P) energy trading approach has emerged as a viable paradigm to provide the necessary flexibility and coordinate the energy sharing between a pair of prosumers. The P2P approach is based on the concept of decentralized energy trading between prosumers (i.e., production capabilities or energy consumers). However, security protection and real-time transaction issues in the P2P market present serious challenges. In this paper, we propose a decentralized P2P energy trading approach for the energy market with high penetration of RE. First, the P2P energy market platform proposed coordinating the energy trading between energy providers and consumers to maximize their social welfare. A distributed algorithm is applied to solve the market-clearing problem based on the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM). In this way, the computational complexity can be reduced. Furthermore, a P2P Manager (P2PM) utility is introduced as an entity to solve the synchronization problem between peers during the market clearing. Finally, through a real-time application using Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL), the effectiveness of the proposed P2PM is verified in terms of synchronizing the market participants and improving the power transaction.

    Within this decade, wireless technology has been used in process control in various industries. WirelessHART is one of the standards, used for creating communication networks for such purpose. Since the technology is relatively new, there are many known and unknown risks in deploying it in real life applications.ABB’s WirelessHART Tool is used for generating simulation scenarios that can be used for evaluating the performance of WirelessHART networks under different conditions.This paper describes in detail, how ABB’s WirelessHART Tool was extended by adding various new functionalities. The topics cover what obstacles we have faced, which solutions were used and why, how our solutions were evaluated and the outcomes. Furthermore, the paper documents the application structure of WirelessHART Tool.

    For a blind swimmer to be able to exercise in a swimming pool today, human assistance is required to notifying the swimmer in due time when and if she is too close to the edge. The purpose of this thesis was to see whether or not it is possible to replace and even improve the human intervention using a warning system built around a tablet mounted next to the pool edge. A secondary goal was to evaluate how suitable a tablet pc is for robotic applications. The system proposed utilizes a tablet’s built-in frontal facing camera, OpenCV as vision library, FM modules for the wireless warning system and is intended for the Android environment.

    Videos of the real scenario have been analyzed on a computer using OpenCV and a detection algorithm searching for the swimmer’s red swimming cap has been developed. Next, the algorithm was implemented on an Android tablet. The result obtained shows that it is perfectly possible to use a cheap tablet to accurately detect and notify the blind swimmer in due time when she is too close to the edge. If calibrated thoroughly, the likelihood of a missed detection is actually lower with this system as compared to human intervention, as humans can only warn the swimmer when she is above the water.

    Model-Driven Development is a development approach which is being used frequently in the automotive context in order to design models. EAST-ADL is an architectural language which models systems according to their architectural features, whereas Simulink is a tool environment which models systems according to their behavior. In this thesis work, we propose a set of transformation rules that take into consideration the EAST-ADL architectural model details and the behavioral specifications in Simulink, and generate a formal model, which can be verified UPPAAL model checker. Moreover, we implement these proposed transformation rules in a tool that automates them. The transformation rules proposed in this thesis work would be implemented for every EAST-ADL file with Simulink behavior specifications, generated by the MetaEdit+ tool. Properties like timing constraints, triggering and hierarchy in both EAST-ADL and Simulink have been considered by the transformation rules. Finally, the Brake-by-Wire case study is used to validate the tool and assess the mapping of the elements.

    In wireless communication there is commonly much unnecessarycommunication made in directions not pointing towards the recipient. Normallyomni directional antennas are being used which sends the same amount ofenergy in all directions equally. This waste of energy reduces the lifetime ofbattery powered units and causes more traffic collisions than necessary. Oneway of minimizing this wasted energy and traffic collisions, is to use anothertype of antenna called “smart antenna”. These antennas can use selectableradiation patterns depending on the situation and thus drastically minimize theunnecessary energy waste. Smart antennas also provide the ability to sense thedirection of incoming signals which is favorable for physical layout mappingsuch as orientation.This thesis presents the prototyping of a new type of smart antenna called theSPIDA smart antenna. This antenna is a cheap to produce smart antennadesigned for the 2.4 GHz frequency band. The SPIDA smart antenna can usesixty-four different signal patterns with the control of six separate directionalmodes, amongst these patterns are six single direction patterns, an omnidirectionalsignal pattern and fifty-six combi-direction patterns. The thesispresents complete building instructions, evaluation data and functional driversfor the SPIDA smart antenna.
