The contribution of local environments to competence creation in multinational enterprises2014Inngår i: Long range planning, ISSN 0024-6301, E-ISSN 1873-1872, Vol. 47, nr 1-2, s. 87-99Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines the competence development of subsidiaries in multinational enterprises. We analyze how local subsidiary environments affect the development of technological and business competencies among other units in the multinational enterprise. We test our predictions using data from 2,107 foreign-owned subsidiaries located in seven European countries, by means of structural equation modeling - namely, LISREL. By bringing the local environment to the fore, we contribute to the literature on the emergence and determinants of firm-specific advantages. We link local subsidiary environments to the development of the competencies of other units in the multinational enterprise. The role of the multinational enterprise is characterized as integrative, as it may bridge local competencies and environments that are conducive to competence creation, and as it facilitates the use of resources residing locally throughout the organization. Thus, we contribute to an enhanced understanding of location as a determinant of the creation of units of competence and centers of excellence within multinational enterprises. In other words, we demonstrate that country-specific advantages are beneficial for competence creation in units other than the local subsidiary. We thereby link country-specific advantages to the creation of firm-specific advantages in the multinational enterprise - i.e., the multinational enterprise can build and augment firm-specific advantages by making the most of country-specific advantages.

Headquarters’ orchestration of Subsidiaries’ Contribution to MNCPerformance2014Inngår i: Local Contexts in Global Business, Vancouver: Academy of International Business , 2014Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Anchored in a subsidiary evolutionary framework, this paper analyzes how headquarters of multinational corporations canorchestrate its network of subsidiaries. Headquarters orchestration is a valueadding activity aimed at increasing the performance of the organization. Grantingsubsidiaries autonomy and giving them attention is found to positivelyinfluence the scope of subsidiary activities as well as the level of subsidiarycompetencies. This corresponds to how headquarters, as a hub-type of firm, canadd value by orchestrating for subsidiary evolution. Furthermore, our resultsindicate that if subsidiaries evolve it has positive effects on the overall performanceof the multinational corporation. Thus, our findings help to explain howheadquarters may create value within the multinational corporation in terms ofincreasing subsidiaries’ contribution to performance. The results, based on asample of 2107 subsidiaries, elucidate the entrepreneurial role and function ofheadquarters as an important orchestrator of the multinational corporation forsubsidiary evolution and value creation. Theoretically, this extends theunderstanding of drivers and effects of subsidiary evolution and assigns animportant role and function to headquarters in the orchestration of networkedmultinational corporations.

Network Influence on MNC Subsidiary Initiativ2014Inngår i: The Intersection of International Entrepreneurship Knowledge: Bridging the Gap Between Entrepreneurship and International Business / [ed] Valerie Bell, Yang-Pei Lin, Spiros Batas, Denis Frydrych and Elizabeth Montoya Martinez., 2014Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Value-chain networks are of major importance to multinational subsidiaries, yet they have failed to receive significant attention in the literature. We extend the knowledge-based view of the firm by exploring whether three different types of multinational subsidiary networks have dissimilar impact on their initiatives. The level and degree of subsidiary entrepreneurial activities enhances subsidiary performance and generate positive externalities in both the wider multinational corporation (MNC) system and the host country (Birkinshaw, 2000; Dimitratos et al., 2009). Despite the increased interest in the determinants of subsidiary initiative and knowledge integration, the existing literature has primarily focused on the characteristics of the knowledge, e.g. tacitness, stickiness, causal ambiguity, and attributes of the sender and receiver, such as, motivation and absorptive capacity; while the location, or sources, of the knowledge remain largely un-researched with a few exceptions (see e.g. Forsgren, 1999; Foss and Pedersen, 2002). Likewise, network theorists have emphasized different forms of networks as productive for entrepreneurial initiatives (Coleman, 1998; Burt, 2000); and described structural characteristics impeding entrepreneurial activity leading to organizational myopia (Uzzi, 1997; Hansen 1999). Very few, if any, attempts have been pursued to explain how the different types of networks a subsidiary is simultaneously involved affect its entrepreneurial initiatives. We develop four hypotheses based on MNC network and initiative literature streams.

750 UK based subsidiaries originating from the US, EU and Japan were randomly selected, adding up to a total sample of 2,250 subsidiaries. After excluding subsidiaries that were not eligible to participate in the survey, the actual sample of subsidiaries ended up being 1,770 subsidiaries. A structured questionnaire was pretested by academics and subsidiary managers in order to check its comprehensibility and clarity before the launch of the survey. The data collection from the 1,770 subsidiaries included three postal waves and two rounds of follow-up phone calls in between. The total number of usable responses that we employed to test our hypotheses was 268 subsidiaries. A structured questionnaire was posted to each subsidiary’s managing director; while a second top management respondent also participated in the survey

in 10% of the sample to establish inter-rater reliability. The overall response rate across the entire sample of subsidiaries was 16%. The Likert scales draw from previously developed measures. We also took measures to control for common method variance following the suggestions of Podsakoff et al. (2003).

Based on this sample of 268 subsidiaries and a moderated regression analysis, we find that value-chain networks have a higher positive impact than multinational corporation networks and non value-chain networks; because they may provide the subsidiary knowledge with market opportunities that it lacks and that the other types of networks cannot effectively provide. However, value-chain networks have a negative effect on initiative of a subsidiary operating in an environment of high uncertainty; because they can constrain the exploration and creation of new knowledge that cannot be provided by any of the networks. Contrary to our expectations, the combined effect of value-chain and non-value chain networks has a negative influence on enhancing initiatives; and, the combined effect of value-chain and MNC networks does not affect entrepreneurial initiatives.

This paper has considerable research implications. As regards the knowledge based view, the paper argues that not all firm-external knowledge is equally valuable in developing entrepreneurial initiatives. The value of this knowledge may depend on whether the subsidiary needs that knowledge. Since an MNC subsidiary tends to lack knowledge about its local and foreign country market opportunities and such knowledge is difficult for it to acquire because it is tacit, establishing networks with value-chain partners that have this knowledge generates entrepreneurial initiatives. This is especially the case when subsidiaries operate in an environment of high certainty. Furthermore, knowledge accessed through both value-chain and other types of networks may not bring synergistic effects as it is likely to be complex and time consuming to manage.

The paper also contributes to the theme of subsidiary entrepreneurship. This is the first study to more fully examine the role of subsidiary value-chain networks in enhancing entrepreneurial initiatives. Prior studies focus primarily on MNC networks and host-country networks. Additionally, this is seemingly the first study that compared the relative effects of all three types of networks on subsidiary entrepreneurial initiatives. It shows that, after considering the effects of other types of networks, value-chain networks appear to have the largest positive influence, especially when the subsidiaries operate in an environment of high certainty.

The paper also contributes to managerial practice. Subsidiary managers who wish to develop initiatives are advised to establish value-chain networks with customers, suppliers and distributors. This is especially the case for subsidiaries operating in a stable environment. In addition, managers are advised to pursue networking activities with solely value-added partners since the simultaneous implementation of all types of value added activities is seemingly detrimental for entrepreneurial initiatives.

Internal MNC structures’ bearing on externally embedded subsidiaries’ organizational performance2015Inngår i: Handbook on International Alliance and Network Research / [ed] Larimo, J & Nummela, N, Cheltenham: Edward Elgar Publishing, 2015, s. 155-170Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The theoretical research stream that depicts multinational companies (MNCs) as networked organizations has offered new insights on contemporary enterprises’ way of functioning. However, the majority of the research has focused on external embeddedness, that is, MNC subsidiaries’ local business relationships, and its impact on subsidiary organizational performance. This conceptual chapter addresses the lack of research focusing on internal embeddedness, that is, subsidiary relationships with headquarters and sister subsidiaries. Internal embeddedness is discussed from two dimensions: the internal production network and the MNC manager’s social network. The characteristics of each dimension and how they relate to earlier research, leads to a number of theoretical propositions. The chapter concludes with a discussion on how external and internal embeddedness relate, as well as how they may impact the subsidiary’s (organizational) performance.

UNPACKING INTERUNIT KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER IN MULTINATIONAL ENTERPRISES2015Inngår i: GLOBAL STRATEGY JOURNAL, ISSN 2042-5791, Vol. 5, nr 3, s. 241-255Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We examine the success of knowledge transfer within an MNE network by unpacking aggregate knowledge flows into individual projects. We assess knowledge transfer performance along two dimensions: utilization of transferred knowledge and transfer cost. We argue that the substitutive versus complementary nature of subunits' activities is a key determinant of knowledge utilization at the target subunit. Further, we posit that headquarters' incentives and monitoring are crucial factors affecting both the utilization and transfer cost dimensions. Our empirical results, based on 141 individual intersubunit knowledge transfer projects involving 49 subunits in 12 European countries largely support our arguments. Our methodology highlights the fact that aggregate measures of interunit knowledge flows can be misleading since they may include individual projects with widely differing levels of success. Knowledge Creation and Protection in Subsidiaries Embedded in Local Technology Clusters2016Inngår i: International Business in a Multi-speed Global Economy / [ed] Kevin Ibeh, 2016Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

MNE subsidiariesface a trade-off between the ambition to source knowledge that is embedded in the host-location and the need to protect their corporation’s knowledge-based assets from external appropriationby close competitors. In this paper, we explore how foreign subsidiaries operating in a highly competitive knowledge-based cluster or chestrate their local linkages with non-value chain partners to strategically manage the knowledge imperatives to which they are exposed.

Our results show that subsidiaries establish heterogeneous patterns of interaction with different non-value chain agents in the host location, as their perception regarding the role these agents may play varies. More specifically, in the presence of fierce competition, when higher spillover risks should compel them to refrain from local interaction, subsidiaries do shy away from competitors. However, some simultaneously pursue their knowledge creation objectives by linking to agents that minimize spillover risks while still offering learning opportunities, such as the local university. This leads us to conclude that spillover risks, by themselves, do not automatically drive the choice to avoid interaction, as subsidiaries are able to strategically differentiate between various types of partners. In so doing we reconcile the extant contradiction between the strategic deterrence and physical attraction theses

    Abstract [en]

Later years' globalization and increased competition has forced firms to re-evaluate their current configuration and location of activities An emerging shortage of talent and a recognition of knowledge sources far more spread around the globe have Induced firms to re-think their configuration of knowledge-intensive activities, such as R&D Disaggregation and dispersion of activities is though a double edged sword as it simultaneously enhances the access to resources and talent increasing the value of knowledge development activities in the firm, but also add to the costs of management and coordination In this article we discuss how designing the configuration of R&D activities and the utilization of organizational coordination and control mechanisms help firms to stay on top of the costs induced by inter-task interdependencies among the disaggregated R&D activities and thereby leveraging the knowledge and capabilities developed in the offshored activities We utilize the Danish wind mill company Vestas as an empirical example to illustrate our discussion.

Although the core concepts underlying IB and IHRM provide a common lexicon and epistemology, this commonality is often more implicit than explicit. We highlight not only the common ground but also the lack of critical dialogue between the two fields. This paper asks: What can each field learn from the other? What do scholars from IB learn from IHRM and vice versa? We identify a possible agenda and concerns regarding theory building as a basis for dialogue between the two fields. © 2019

MNESubsidiary Relationships and R&D role evolution at the Dual Context Nexus2014Inngår i: ACHIEVING A NEW BALANCE:The Rise of Multinationals from Emerging Economiesand the Prospects for Established Multinationals / [ed] Annie Wei and Frank McDonald, 2014Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Subsidiaries ofmultinational enterprises operate in an often conflicting dual context. Theyare at the same time a part of the external local host country environment andthe internal (MNE) global network. There is as yet limited integratedexplanation of the simultaneous co-evolution of internal subsidiary R&D andknowledge density and breadth in this dual network in particular, theconditions under which subsidiaries tap into local knowledge sources and whichnetwork partners are most useful and the attendant relations and role evolution(or diminution) within the MNE. This paper reports on a qualitative study offour MNE subsidiaries that are both internal MNE ‘centre of excellence’ andlong-serving and leading members of a mature high-tech cluster. In a series ofsemi-structured interviews with key knowledge holders the evolution ofsubsidiary R&D roles were teased out and the importance and quality ofrelations in the dual context are identified.

A holistic approach to acquisition of strategic resources2007Inngår i: Journal of European Industrial Training, ISSN 0309-0590, Vol. 31, nr 8, s. 660-677Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - The aim of this article is to provide a holistic framework for the acquisition of strategic resources. Design/methodology/approach - The literature dealing with resource creation is reviewed and analyzed from a resource-based point of view. The major methods of acquiring resourcesare identified through the literature review and the applicability of the framework proposed is illustrated with an empirical example. Findings - Three ways of acquiring strategic resources are identified - direct investments, organizational processes, and product market positioning. All three ways of acquisition can be intentional or unintentional. Arguments for using this six-dimension scale are provided through deductive reasoning, literature review, and the empirical example. Research implications/limitations - The study identifies the six dimensions of strategic resource acquisition. However, integration of these dimensions is not a subject addressed in this study. Cluster analysis of companies according to these dimensions could enhance our understanding of the characteristics of companies regarding resource acquisition. Originality/value - Whereas previous studies have generally used a single-theory approach, this study highlights the importance of having a holistic outlook when analyzing resource-based competitive advantages.

Hur normbrytande marknadsföring påverkar svenska konsumenters varumärkesattityd2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Fokusgruppsdiskussionerna spelades in och transkriberades.

MATERIALS MANAGEMENT AND ITS EFFECTS ON COST OF SUPPLIES: MATERIALS MANAGEMENT2008Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Date: 2008-06-05

Course: Master Thesis in Business Administration, 15 ECTS credits. EF0704

Authors: Albert Kofi Assiamah Daniel Allotey Prince Kofi Hanson

    Supervisor: Sigvard Herber

Title: Materials Management and its Effect on Cost of Supplies

Background: In most organizations within the country (Ghana), materials management has

been relegated to the background without any proper control. This means

that companies are investing heavily in materials than is necessary.

Problem: How can materials management minimize the cost of supplies in

    Cocoa Processing Company of Ghana?

Purpose: The aim of this research is to illustrate how the application of

materials management concept can minimize the cost of supplies in Cocoa

    Processing Company of Ghana.

Methods: With regards to primary data, interviews (face-to-face, telephone) and questionnaire

were used. Secondary data has been sourced through literature from the university

library and internet sources, qualitative design method was chosen over others

because of the nature of the research work.

Conclusion: Financially, materials (inventories) are very important to manufacturing companies and on the balance sheet they usually represent from twenty to sixty percent of total

assets. Therefore, if the application of the concept of materials management is accepted with well qualified personnel, it could lead to the minimization of cost. The function of a materials manager is to promote coordination and integration within the supply chain and the major benefits are assumed to be; reduction in interdepartmental conflicts, reduction of inventory levels, increased knowledge of total corporate operations and reduction of materials handling costs among others.

Konsten att internationaliseras: En studie om små företag2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Entrepreneurship in a School Setting: Introducing a Business Concept in a Public Context2017Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Entrepreneurship has during the last decades gained an immense interest in academia, politics and practice. It is argued from politics that more entrepreneurs are necessary for the economic development. In addition, nowadays entrepreneurship is also perceived as a solution to social and societal challenges. This drives a need for entrepreneurial people everywhere in society who can cope with the inconstant and uncertain world of today. As a consequence, there are around the world numerous educational initiatives trying to inspire and fuel an entrepreneurial mind-set. Here, educations of all kind become relevant contexts since they provide an opportunity to affect children, youth’s and adult’s interest and attitudes towards entrepreneurship, and as such give a possibility to reach a vast number of people.

Sweden is no exception, and in 2009 the Swedish Government launched a ‘Strategy for entrepreneurship in the field of education’ in which entrepreneurship is said to run like a common thread throughout education. The main focus is that self-employment is to become as natural as being an employee. As such the Government took an active stand for implementing entrepreneurship in the school setting on a broad front, from preschool to adult education.

This development can be seen as part of New Public Management; a development where concepts from the private sector are lent and transferred to the public sector. Thus, when introducing entrepreneurship in the Swedish educational system, this at the same time means introducing a traditional business concept in a public setting. Therefore, the overall aim of this thesis is to increase knowledge of and insights on how a business concept – entrepreneurship – is operationalised and constructed in a public setting.

When placing entrepreneurship in new societal contexts other questions arise and complexity intensifies. In this qualitative research, the empirical context in focus are schools. It investigates how entrepreneurship is constructed among teachers in their work. But also how this business concept is included in a non-business setting by studying how the entrepreneurship strategy is operationalised in educational practice.

As such the thesis and its findings contribute to the scientific discussions on societal entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship education, as well as on strategy and strategising in a public context. The research also aspire to serve inspiration, insights and food for thoughts on discussions and reflections on entrepreneurship within the school practice.

This compilation thesis include five papers. To be able to fulfil the aim this research use a broad theoretical base and multiple qualitative research methods. The combination of methods include semi-structured interviews, in-depth interview using the stimulated recall method, focus group interviews, participative meetings, observations, document studies, digital questionnaires, written inquiries, analysing texts and critical incidents questionnaires.

    Abstract [en]

Matters of strategy and entrepreneurship are receiving increased attention within the public sector. This paper’s purpose is to advance the understanding how strategizing unfolds in the public sector, an area scarcely researched. The context constitutes of a Swedish public Strategy of Entrepreneurship in Education. With help of the concepts content and process and their relation, the study investigates how entrepreneurship is implemented in the school setting demonstrating expressions of strategizing; how everyday activities are performed and change the outcome of strategy in practice. The paper makes a theoretical contribution to the field of strategic management in public sector and strategizing research by displaying the practitioners’ four main central practices important when it comes to implementing strategy in the public sector. It also enhances the knowledge on how governmental entrepreneurship initiatives are implemented in public settings.

Entrepreneurial Learning in Education: Preschool as a Take-Off for the Entrepreneurial Self2015Inngår i: Journal of Education and Training, ISSN 2330-9709, Vol. 2, nr 2, s. 40-58Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Recently the phenomenon of entrepreneurship by political aspirations has entered the school setting. This is a world-wide development affecting education in practice and theory. In 2009 the Swedish Government launched a strategy stating that entrepreneurship should run like a common thread through the educational system. Since childhood is considered the ideal stage to influence attitudes towards entrepreneurship, and preschool constitutes the beginning of this publicly imposed “red thread”, this setting is of particular interest. In school practice the concept of entrepreneurship is translated into entrepreneurial learning. In this study we seek to investigate what characterises entrepreneurial learning in a preschool context according to preschool teachers by conducting both critical incident questionnaires and an in-depth interview using stimulated recall method. The empirical results suggest that entrepreneurial learning has developed the preschool teachers’ educational discussions and has affected the children’s entrepreneurial skills. Further, when analysing the material as to what supports and hinders a positive entrepreneurial learning situation, four main themes emerged: ongoing reflection, active participation, a meaningful learning situation and a tolerant atmosphere.

Entrepreneurship in Teacher Education - Conceptualization, Design & Learning outcomes2016Inngår i: RENT XXX, Antwerpen, Belgium, 18-19 November, 2016, 2016Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives: Currently some novel initiatives in Sweden aim to introduce entrepreneurship broadly in teacher education programs. The purpose of this paper is to shed light on one of these early attempts. Specifically we will answer the following research questions: How is entrepreneurship conceptualized in teacher education programs? How is the education designed in terms of pedagogy and didactics? What are the main learning outcomes that the education strives for?

Literature review: The broadening of the entrepreneurship concept where entrepreneurship is conceptualized as a general method for human development (Sarasvathy & Venkataraman, 2011) as well as the proposition by Hannon (2013) that entrepreneurism is the development of a set of individual behaviors, skills and attitudes can be applied in many societal contexts, has provided openings to work with entrepreneurship in teacher education. However in relation to entrepreneurship education we still lack knowledge on key educational and didactical issues, in terms of for instance the nature and impact of our activities (Fayolle, 2013) and in relation to teacher education programs this knowledge is even more scarce.

Approach: In this mainly qualitative case study of a Swedish teacher education entrepreneurship module we apply interviews and surveys of both teachers and students to collect our empirical material. Our starting point is that entrepreneurship education activities in this setting needs to be underpinned by thoughts on theoretical concepts and practices from both entrepreneurship and learning theories. We use Fayolle and Gaillys (2008) teaching model framework as an analytic lens to help provide necessary understanding in relation to our pedagogical and didactical questions.

Results: The results show how entrepreneurship education in teacher education is riddled with tensions relating to overall mission, target groups, pedagogy, content and assessments. However, there seem to be viable paths forward that might mitigate these tensions and provide a better opportunity for entrepreneurship education within the realm of teacher education.

Implications and Value: First and foremost, we add to the knowledge about how entrepreneurship is introduced in teacher education programs, helping both researchers and practitioners understand the conceptualization, design in terms of pedagogy and didactic, as well as main learning outcomes. By using and building on Fayolle and Gailly’s (2008) theoretical teaching model framework, we provide structured empirical perspectives and knowledge aggregation on pedagogy and didactic in entrepreneurship education. As such we contribute to the knowledge about how entrepreneurship education is operationalized and perceived in a special case of non-business context, from both a teacher and student perspective.

Introducing Entrepreneurship in a School Setting - Entrepreneurial Learning as the Entrance Ticket2015Inngår i: The 8th International Conference for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Regional Development, Sheffield: Sheffield University , 2015, s. 756-772Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The prevailing economic world order relies on financial progress and business development, and entrepreneurship is seen as an important means to achieve this. To inspire the development of an entrepreneurial mind-set among citizens, public initiatives through education has improved and consequently entrepreneurship education is booming. Positioning our research within the discussion regarding entrepreneurship as a broader societal phenomenon, our contribution lies within a much less researched context – entrepreneurship in the lower secondary school. In this context we focus on the teachers’ perspective to investigate how they approach entrepreneurship and what they actually do when teaching it. Our results indicate that there has been a change in terminology from entrepreneurship to entrepreneurial learning. Furthermore, there has been a change in practice. The empirics show that an entrepreneurial learning approach includes real-life connected projects, collaboration with the surrounding community and practising entrepreneurial skills. Adding to this, working with entrepreneurial learning has in this context resulted in enhancing the motivation of pupils as well as a changed perspective on teaching and learning. Our theoretical contribution lies within the literature on societal entrepreneurship, providing a conceptual model of entrepreneurship education in lower secondary education which is an attempt to clarify and enrich the discussion the discussion on a definition of entrepreneurship in a school setting.

Employee motivation during an organizational divestment: an inductive case study2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Research Questions: What effect does uncertainty caused by divestment have on resistance to organizational change? How does this type of change affect employee motivation?

Purpose: Change processes, such as divestments, are strongly related to employee motivation and engagement. Understanding how organizational divestment affects employee motivation is of great importance and would therefore help companies recognize the importance of minimizing uncertainty factors to increase employee motivation. This leads to the purpose of the thesis, which is to study the effects of divestment on employee motivation and draw links to the ongoing modular divestment at ABB Power Grids.

Method: The research questions and the purpose were answered by using a qualitative approach by conducting eight semi-structured in-depth interviews. When drawing conclusions to answer the research question, the arguments were strengthened by a qualitative foundation. With the usage of a case company, the study aims to provide a better understanding of the effects that an ongoing divestment phenomenon has on employee motivation.

Conclusion: A connection between uncertainty caused by divestment and a decrease in employee motivation was noticed in the conducted research. The uncertainty was mostly caused by the lack of communication regarding the divestment. The lack of communication also had other implications such as spread of rumors regarding the divestment and employees not feeling part of the organization which further demotivated them.

Barriers and Enablers of Knowledge Sharing: A Qualitative Study of ABB, Bombardier, Ericsson and Siemens2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave

Keywords: Knowledge, Knowledge Management, Knowledge Sharing, Factors Affecting Knowledge Sharing

Research Question: What hinders or enables knowledge sharing in Swedish-based multi-national corporations from a cultural, motivational and trust perspective?

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the barriers and enablers of knowledge sharing within multi-national corporations.

Method: The research method chosen to fulfill the purpose of the thesis is a qualitative approach. In order to achieve the purpose both primary and secondary data was sought. In accordance with the qualitative approach, interviews have been carried out with senior managers in ABB, Bombardier, Ericsson and Siemens. Data collected from these interviews represents the primary data. Secondary data has been gathered from company websites.

Conclusion: The results from the studied multi-national organizations suggest that knowledge sharing culture is influenced by communication, rules, regulations and routines (sub-factors of culture). This study shows that communication, rules, regulations and routines are enablers of knowledge sharing in the organizations. However, language and technology (sub-factors of culture) as collaborative tools are proven to be problematic; consequently creating hindrances to knowledge sharing. When it comes to motivational factors (rewards, power and reciprocity), this thesis shows that none of the studied companies offer rewards for knowledge sharing. This confirms the controversy connected with rewards which can either enable or cause hindrance to knowledge sharing. Reciprocity seems to enable knowledge sharing in the studied organizations whereas power remains controversial. The existence of power can either be a barrier or an enabler for knowledge sharing depending on the individual’s perception of power. This thesis also shows that the existence of trust enables knowledge sharing between employees, but the difficulties of building this trust is akey problem for management.

Titel:                       ”JAG ÄR INTE EN MÄNNISKA. JAG ÄR EN ROBOT”

    Handledare:           Amalia Nilsson

Avskaffande av revisionsplikten i småföretag- Hur påverkas berörda fåmansföretag?2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The main issue: On the basis of the authors problem discussion has following questions came along: how will the closed companies be affected by a abolishing of demand on auditing? How could the abolishing of demand on auditing in Denmark and England relate to Swedish possible abolishing of auditing?

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine and describe how closed companies stand to abolishing of demand on auditing and which affects they think they will get.

Method: The authors have chosen to use a qualitative method. With open questions can give space for discussions, which can give the authors better understanding. The empirical material consists of eight different closed companies. The subordinate data were collected before the interview occasion, this because to develop the interview questions.

Conclusion: The authors has come to a conclusion that larger the closed company is, the more of them will keep audit. There are some concerns that the tax authority will introduce time-consuming controls for those companies who does not have audit. The banks look at the auditing as a good basic data of companies financial possibilities but yet they can see that the credit possibilities from case to case and have to adjust to the market. The economics crime authority means that the economics crimes is the largest among the small companies, and the risk for that is bigger if the demand on auditing is going to abolish. The Economic Crimes will reduce if the companies learned more about auditing, in the same time, those that want to be involved with such crimes will anyway find other solutions.

In the paper it has been comparison with how the abolishing of demand on auditing has been in Denmark and England. There has been certain similarity with Sweden. The most companies in those named countries above, thinks that the cost for audit does not exceed the benefit. In Denmark, who recently has abolished the audit demand for small companies has yet no bigger differences, but a survey has claimed that this could change in a few years. England has had since 1993 an exception from the demand on auditing and it has appeared that most companies still keep the auditing in the firm; they mean it is an advantage for them. The advantage for these companies is that auditing provides a benefit and contributes to good public information for the society, which considers to be auditing target.

Företagsrekonstruktion: En ekonomisk analys av Ågerups Grafiska AB2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
