    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this paper is to discuss how a political driven transition of a large company, Apoteket AB in Sweden with 12,000 employees - the pharmacy state monopoly - can be designed and managed to become a free market competitive player. The reregulation process, with a great variety of stakeholders involved, has since 2006 been followed, documented and analyzed. In the domain of pharmacy products and services - essential for health and well-being - a design and innovation process must be handled with care for balancing pharmaceutical and business strategies. The research contribution and expected learning outcome of this paper are to give insights; first on processes and methods for organizational designs and transformation; second to get experience from designing and implementing a management strategy to lead the reregulation to success; and third to get knowledge on how traditional professional roles can be changed and developed by designing a process with clear goals, conscious learning and a communicative strategy.     Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this paper is to discuss how to design entrepreneurial mindsets in different academic cultures and its motives with focus on engineering and management education. Empirical data are collected from, Sweden, Ukraine and India in a ten-year period from 1998-2009. The theoretical framework is based on an integrated view of innovation, design and entrepreneurship sciences. Our findings are that it is quite possible to open up more traditional or narrow mindsets of engineering and management to more broad and multi-scientific approaches, relevant in our complex world. An entrepreneurial mindset has close links to innovation and is characterized by relentless pursuit of opportunities, thinking different, intuitive and executive, is risk-taking and eliminates pre-existing routines. It focuses more on technology and business creation than on state-of-the art technology and business administration. In this approach the culture and climate in an organization and the eco-system around the universities also can be changed to high-light creativity, design and innovation. We have learnt that a strong, open and visionary leadership is necessary in such a challenging work.

    Abstract [en]

    The need for reducing poverty and to develop the standard of living in rural areas around the world is enormous. Ideas for new approaches have to be created, developed and implemented. Design thinking and methods combined with innovation in practice and management - as Design Inspired Innovation - could be such a concept to provide for rural people to empower themselves and improve their living conditions. On the other hand it is important to learn from the sustainable lifestyle practices being followed in rural villages and extrapolate them to the urban setting. The purpose of this paper is to discuss an initiative between Swedish and Indian researchers, MBA students and their networks. It is based on appropriate design research methodology, ethnographic design research and innovation science. Experiences from initial empirical studies show that master students gathering data in the field (focusing in the areas such as ICT, banking & finance, health care, entrepreneurship, energy and agribusiness), analyzing and interpreting the data together with researchers can get new insights of opportunities in innovation and entrepreneurship at the 'bottom of the pyramid'.

    Abstract [en]

     Long term growth and future jobs in society rely on that industry is able to realize new sustainable product ideas and develop these to profitable products in the market. This encompasses both short time-to-market and continuous development and adaption of existing products and processes to improve productivity. Innovative skills are required in both product/service development and in product/service introduction. Thus, there is a need for new innovative methods and models that supports and strengthens industry in generating new ideas and realizing these into successful products and improved processes. This paper discusses and compares engineering design, innovation, and design. The paper argues that there is a need to integrate the disciplines and work practices of innovation and design in the engineering design field and to build multi-disciplinary environments to be successful in research, education and in industry. A conceptual framework for innovation and design inspired product realization is presented in the paper.

    Abstract [en]

    Science and Technology Park's (STP) often offers business incubators to Idea owners where they can develop ideas into companies. The scope of this paper is a study in how the RAFT-model, a “How to”-model based innovation process, affected four Idea owners with environmental innovations in different business areas. This paper also shows how twenty-one Swedish STPs offer Innovation Advice (IA) to Idea owners and think of IA as a competitive offer. All Idea owners found the RAFT-model useful and consider using the RAFT-model again. Two ideas were still in a developing progress and the other two were shut down. Five of the STPs thought IA as a competitive offer to Idea owners, the others found IA proper to be offered by other organizations. Conclusions from this study are that the RAFT-model was appropriate to environmental innovations and STPs found IA valuable for Idea owners but not as a competitive motive.

    Abstract [en]

    On the background of a changing industrial landscape and key elements of the realization of complex integrated products, this paper discuss and explore an "innovative" approach towards product concept development methodologies by focusing on creativity, multidisciplinary teams, and decision-making. Throughout 2006-2009 a product realization methodology, the idPeo methodology, has been developed in a university/industry collaboration milieu. Based on a briefly reported literature review, the paper presents the methodology, briefly the three generations of conducted cases and the evolution of the methodology over the years. It is argued that the approach for innovative product realization in concept development, if implemented correctly also into companies' product development process, could contribute to increased flexibility, creativity and tolerance for change. It could also decrease lead time, increase product performance, and decrease uncertainty.
