Background: As even more patients with complex nursing needs are cared for at home, nurses who work with home healthcare need a broad competence and good knowledge in making emergency assessments at home. The aim: The aim is to examine nurses' experiences of emergency assessments at home. Method: A qualitative survey study analyzed according to Elo & Kyngä's description of content analysis. A total of 19 nurses active in home healthcare in two municipalities in Västra Götaland participated. Results: Six subcategories and two categories were identified in the content analysis. The categories are: Challenges in emergency assessments at home and Need of support. Conclusion: The results show that there are organizational difficulties that make emergency assessments difficult in the home. Difficulties in making safe emergency assessments at home are also due to skills shortages among both nurses and nursing staff. In order to increase the possibility of safe assessments at home, skills development and adapted decision support are needed for both nurses and nursing staff.
