    Abstract [en]

Background: The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding until the child is 6 months old. Despite this recommendation, few women are breastfeeding for recommended amount of time. Breast milk is considered to be the best nutritional food for the newborn and also has positive health effects on both the mother and the child. The breastfeeding statics in Sweden has a falling trend, it shows that only 13% breastfeed until the child is 6 months old. The midwifes promotional breastfeeding work has an important role to play in todays society. Purpose: To identify the reasons why women stop breastfeeding before the child is 6 month of age. Method: Web-based survey with a mixed method of design. A data analysis with descriptive statistics and a qualitative analysis. Results: The survey was conducted by 160 participants. During the pregnancy 86% wanted to breastfeed for 6 months or longer, but only 26% breastfed according to their intention. The surveys revealed that the information provided from maternity welfare is idealistic rather than realistic and half of the assigned survey group felt that they have not received adequate support regarding breastfeeding from maternal welfare to child health care. Primaparas considered breastfeeding to be more difficult than expected and the partner was considered to be the most important support during the period of breastfeeding. Midwifes instruct with hands-on technology. Multiparas breastfeed to greater extent and 6 months or longer in comparison to first parturients, even tough they are not offered to participate in childbirth and parenting preparation courses. Conclusion: Mothers, both primaparas and multiparas stopped breastfeeding of stress factors of breastfeeding, insufficient milk production, the baby was given another food replacement, poor weight gain in the child and mental illness. Mothers demand individualized breastfeeding information, sessions, and spontanious support by midwifes.
