    Diversity barometer: attitude changes in Sweden2020In: Nordic Social Work Research, ISSN 2156-857X, E-ISSN 2156-8588, Vol. 10, no 1, p. 21-38Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

he aim of this article is to elucidate and discuss the results of the 2016 Diversity Barometer (Mångfaldsbarometern) and compare these results with those obtained from ten years of the longitudinal Diversity Barometers for 2005?2014. An additional aim is to demonstrate whether and how Swedish people?s experiences of and attitudes toward people with a foreign background and ethnic diversity have changed.A random sample of the Swedish population took part in the annual study, which was carried out in the form of a nationwide postal survey. The results show that negative attitudes toward ethnic and cultural diversity in general, and migrant population in particular, have increased to some extent and with respect to certain issues. Views on diversity in relation to culture and religion ? especially Islam ? were more negative than views on diversity in relation to work. Those who have larger experience of contact with foreigners show a more positive attitude toward diversity compared with those with limited experience and contact. Individuals who have higher education, those who identify themselves as female, younger persons and those living in large cities are more positive than other groups. In our analysis of the empirical data, we proceeded from a social work perspective and applied contact theory and group conflict theories relating attitudes to group position.

Changes Regarding Attitudes Towards Ethnic and Cultural Diversity in Sweden: The Diversity Barometer (2005-2018)2020In: International Journal of Social Science Studies, ISSN 2324-8033, E-ISSN 2324-8041, Vol. 8, no 5, p. 1-1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article aims to discuss changes in attitudes towards immigrants in Sweden from 2015 onwards, based on the results of the longitudinal Diversity Barometer studies from 2005-2014, 2016 and 2018. The Diversity Barometer studies are based on a national, representative, and randomly selected sample from the Swedish population, with a new sample selected each time. We have analyzed the changes from a sociological perspective, using theories such as contact theory and group conflict theory. The results show an increase in negative attitudes towards ethic and cultural diversity generally, and towards immigrants specifically. Diversity in culture and religion – especially towards Islam – is more negatively perceived as compared to diversity in the work domain. Societal groups with extensive experience from contact with foreigners, those who identify themselves as women, those who are more educated, younger people and city dwellers, have all a more positive attitude towards diversity than others.

The securitization of asylum seeking in Sweden after 2015 in light of experiences of asylum-seeking girls with roots in Afghanistan2018In: The migration crises? Criminalization, security and survival / [ed] Dina Siegel, Veronika Nagy, Uppsala: The HAgue:Eleven , 2018, p. 363-388Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter aims to shed light from a gender perspective on the issue of security for asylum seeking adolescent girls in context of increased securitisation of the asylum-seeking process following the migration vogue of 2015. Half of those 163,000 asylum-seeking people who arrived to Sweden in 2015 were children, and half of them were unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC), a majority being boys from Afghanistan. As a response Sweden has reversed its open asylum regime to the minimum EU standard in 2016, including restrictive attitude towards granting residency for UASC. This article explores how the securitization radically changed the preconditions for the establishment of asylum-seeking adolescent girls. Beyond the review of previous research and new data sources it also explores the issue through the analyses of the life stories of two girls of Afghan origin. One of them arrived with her parents through family affiliation with her brother who had previously received asylum as an UASC. The other girl arrived as an UASC in 2015. The narrative analysis provides a voice to two girls and their experiences, and is to complement the research on post 2015 securitisation with focus on gender based vulnerabilities of adolescent girls.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

A picture of the deteriorating situation for women in Iran

After the Islamic Revolution in Iran 1978-79, the situation has become much worse for women, in terms of rights and resources. The aim of this article is to describe this change with the help of demographic data and to argue that it is the result of the repressive policy of the Islamic regime and, ultimately, of islamic ideology. In particular, Iranian women suffer from the return to more traditional laws of marriage and from reduced opportunities to get an education, or a job.

Sociologiska texter om familj, etnicitet, feminism och rasism2004Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

deras integrering i samhället.

    Abstract [sv]

Securitisation of the Swedish migration policy and the situation for unaccompanied children2023In: Crisis and the Culture of Fear and Anxiety in Contemporary Europe. / [ed] Zamorano Llena, C.; Stier, J.; Gray, B, New York: Taylor & Francis, 2023, p. 103-118Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Sweden has been recognised as one of the most generous countries in terms of the governance of migration and asylum. The 2015 “refugee crisis” placed the Swedish migration and asylum system under extreme pressure when more than 163,000 refugees arrived in 2015. Like other EU members, Swedish migration policies have become gradually more restrictive, legitimised by the discourse of securitisation, whereby migration is addressed as a threat. By taking “securitisation” as a conceptual point of departure, the aim of this chapter is to analyse the official statements and non-official motives behind the securitisation turn of Sweden’s post-2015 migration policy and relate them to the vulnerable situation unaccompanied immigrants experienced when they came to Sweden in 2015 as refugees and asylum seekers. However, even if some of the interviewees had experienced racism and other negative attitudes and felt ill at ease waiting for their residency permit, unaccompanied immigrants are not necessarily vulnerable victims without the capacity and will to learn a new language, educate themselves and find a job.

Hedersrelaterad problematik i skolan: - en kunskaps-och forskningsöversikt2010Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Diversity Barometer 2020: Attitudes towards Immigration and Ethnic Diversity in Sweden2021In: Social Sciences, E-ISSN 2076-0760, Vol. 10, no 10, article id 401Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Migration is topical in many counties, and attitudes towards immigration and ethnic diversity are volatile. In our longitudinal "Diversity Barometer ", we have studied changes in Swedes' attitudes towards immigration and ethnic diversity in Sweden since 2005, using a postal questionnaire sent to a random sample of the Swedish population aged 18-75. In this article, we analyzed data from 2020 (n = 1035) in comparison with previous Diversity Barometer surveys from 2005 to 2018. The findings showed that Swedes had increased contact with immigrants from the Middle East, Asia and Africa. The majority had good experiences of studying or working with people with foreign background, although those with bad experiences had also increased. Attitudes towards immigration and ethnic diversity were more positive in 2020, thereby stopping a negative trend that started with the refugee influx in 2015. Positive attitudes were more established among women, younger people, those with higher education, people living in larger cities and those with more contact with people with foreign background. Sympathizers of political parties closer to the left wing were more positive towards immigration and ethnic diversity. We used political correctness, contact theory, strain theory and theory about group conflict/threats to provide hypothetical explanations for the observed changes in attitudes.</p>

Broken dreams of a better life in Sweden: Thai women’s lived experiences of intimate partner violence by Swedish men in international marriages2018In: Global Health Action, ISSN 1654-9716, E-ISSN 1654-9880, Vol. 11, no 1, p. 1-10Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Intimate partner violence by men against women has detrimental effects on equality, health and integration. Migrated and ‘imported’ wives experience an increased risk of intimate partner violence. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore Thai immigrant women’s lived experiences of intimate partner violence in Sweden. Method: Semi-structured interviews based on the critical incident technique with specific questions about experiences of male-to-female intimate partner violence were used to collect data. The participants were Thai immigrant women who had lived in Sweden for more than five years. Qualitative content analysis was used to identify patterns and variations in the transcribed data material. Results: Eighteen interviewees reported psychological, physical, economic and/or sexual violence in their international marriages. These Thai women described being faithful and silent and reliable housewives. However, this did not keep them from being replaced and losing dignity as a result of intimate partner violence, including experiencing broken dreams and deception. Although their dreams were broken, they did not give up their efforts to achieve better lives in Sweden. Conclusions: The vulnerability of imported wives in international marriages needs to be further recognised by health and welfare agencies in Sweden, as elsewhere, to ensure that these women have equal access to human rights, welfare and health as other citizens. From a health promotion perspective, home-based health check-ups are needed to stop the exploitation of imported wives. In Thailand, information and education about the unrecognised negative conditions of the Mia farang role (Imported wife role) need to be disseminated.

Perceptions of transnational family responsibilities' effects on subjective health and wellness - voices of Thai immigrant women2020In: International Journal of Migration, Health and Social Care, ISSN 1747-9894, E-ISSN 2042-8650, Vol. 16, no 3, p. 225-240Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose Globalisation provides new opportunities for immigrant women to supply financial benefits transnationally to uphold their families in their home countries. The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of Thai immigrant women regarding transnational family responsibilities effects on their health and wellness. Design/methodology/approach Qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interviews with 40 Thai immigrant women, of which 34 described having transnational family responsibilities. The transcribed data were analysed using a phenomenographic approach. Findings The findings revealed five structural aspects of transnational family responsibilities of Thai immigrant women: being a dutiful daughter, being a caring mother, being a kind relative, being a "giving" person and striving for a wealthy life. The interviewees seldom encountered enough support from the spouse in handling their transnational family responsibilities. In general, a transnational marriage includes family responsibilities that are continuous and that often is the cause of migration. Practical implications This paper illuminates the transnational responsibilities of marriage migration and argues for women's rights of culturally congruent health care. Originality/value Traditionally Thai women's values are based on how they handle family responsibilities and acknowledging own health needs are not. These interviewees perceived doubled burden in terms of family responsibilities and workload in employed work, which contributed to poor health and wellness.

Welfare Lab a model for collaborative learning and mutual exchange between social workers welfare professionals in different countries2018In: Local Government Quarterly, ISSN 0024-5623, no April-June, p. 6-20Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article describes and evaluates Welfare Labs, a new methodological approach for international exchange and collaborative learning in the area of health and welfare. The Welfare Lab model was developed in a collaborative process between social workers in India and Sweden. A Welfare Lab establishes mutual exchange of ideas for collaborative learning in higher education and in practices of health and welfare. During Welfare Lab, the participants reflect about practical welfare work and relate this to professional training and social context. Together they will find a creative approach where sensitive issues, both general and more specific are possible to discuss
