    Abstract [en]

    Development and technological advancement within Industry 4.0 is on top of agendas worldwide. The prediction that cost of technology will decrease while computational power will increase may lead to a maintenance community putting too much trust in technological advancement, leaving basic maintenance concepts and management underdeveloped or even unimplemented in the future. This paper will, through a case study, exemplify the importance of combining basic maintenance concepts and management, e.g., early equipment management, predetermined preventive maintenance, and root-cause failure analysis and elimination, with technological advancement, e.g., predictive maintenance, cyber-physical systems, internet of things, and big data, in order to increase total maintenance effectiveness.

    With an increasing societal need for temporary buildings, while construction industry faces resource and time efficiency challenges, factory assembly of modular buildings can be a solution. This case study at a start-up company uses experiences from assembly system design and eco-design literature to propose green lean design principles to be used in the design and development of building modules and their assembly stations. The eco-design strategy wheel is used as a basis and adapted for the assessment of green and lean building manufacturing.

    Abstract [en]

    Assembly systems need to manage changes in products and volume. During the design process, preconditions for the operation of assembly systems are generated. The purpose of this paper is to identify the components of the design process of flexible and reconfigurable assembly systems. Literature reviews were conducted and empirical data from six research studies were analyzed to report the results. The authors suggest that the findings can give a clearer overview of the components in these design processes and support studies about relations between components as well as practitioners with a holistic view during the design work.
