Kommunikation & Utveckling inom proAros2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Problem:

    Slutsatsen i praktiken:

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to find out if the deaf and hard of hearing community is in need of dynamic subtitles. Subtitles today are quite flat and seldom creative or expressive. Therefore a survey was formed to ask the deaf and hard of hearing community, their opinion on the matter. During the survey the participants were asked a number of questions concerning the matter. The questions composed of polls and areas where they could answer openly. At first the participants seemed to agree with the planned changes.

The idea of this study came to me while I was creating a movie of my own. In the interest of conveying fast expressive comedy, rapid dynamic verbatim subtitles were formed in order to deliver the jokes and puns right on cue.

Contrary to research and my own predictions, the deaf and hard of hearing community did not however favor that sort of dynamic verbatim subtitles. The pace was too fast and they didn't have time to read it. Even though former research have proved verbatim subtitles to be preferred throughout the community.

Communication space: Spatial design in manufacturing industry2011Licentiate thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The main concern of this licentiate thesis is to discuss how built space is used for communication in the manufacturing industry, from a visual communication perspective. The thesis presents and develops the notion of 'communication space' and presents a model to describe the relation between different factors in the communication space.

In a multiple case study, six different cases from the manufacturing industry are described and analyzed to highlight how built space is used for communication in a lean production context. Research results on how built spaces such as improvement places, meeting places and a development workshop affect improvement processes and communication are presented. What the studied improvement areas, meeting places and workshop can be said to communicate about the improvement processes is analyzed.

The research results show that the built spaces in manufacturing industry are used for communication on two levels, both as places for interaction between employees and as a part of a communication process. The study also shows a relation between architecture from a specific time and the relation to the improvement work in the industrial context. How the results can be used to facilitate communication in the built spaces used for improvement processes in manufacturing industry is suggested in the thesis.

Härskarens skamfulla uttryck: En studie av tre härskartekniker på Facebook: The shameful expressions of the suppressor: A study on three suppression techniques on Facebook2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the words and phrases that occur when suppression techniques are used on the social media Facebook. Quantitative and qualitative methods have been used to investigate how men and women between the ages of 25-65 have been exposed to suppression techniques ridicule, the infliction of guilt and shame, and the violence and threat of violence. The result shows that women are more often exposed to the suppression techniques than men. The suppression technique ridiculous is the most prevalent technique and downgrading is the category of characteristics of inappropriate language use that occurs most frequently. The conclusions that can be drawn from the survey are that women are still the ones who are most often exposed to suppression techniques and that younger people express rougher words and expressions when they use suppression techniques on Facebook.

När myndigheter twittrar: Att ta fram en stil för det offentliga språket på Twitter2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In November 2010, The Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (Sveriges Kommuner och Landsting) distributed a survey where 53 % of the responding municipalities declared that they use Twitter. Out of the municipalities that declared they did not use social media, 49 % answered that they were planning on using it but that they had not gotten started. The purpose with social media was primarily declared to be maintaining dialogue with citizens and a channel for information.

The informal “twittersphere” is a new environment for the conventionally formal government communication, and with it comes an entirely new set of demands on the style and content of texts, compared to other media. The purpose of my work was to present a style proposal for the public sector’s communication on Twitter, with the help of theory and empirical data.

My methods consisted of text analysis and qualitative interviews. I analyzed eight selected municipalities on Twitter and interviewed four informants who held different perspectives on the subject, to get a deeper understanding. Chosen topics in both methods were e.g. formality, address, dialogue and visibility of the writer.

The analysis results showed that the municipalities were neither present, personal, nor inviting – and my conclusion was that they therefore did not strive for dialogue, at least not on Twitter. The interviews focused mainly on how the municipalities should use Twitter, and what surfaced in the interviews took great part in my style proposal and the accompanying guidelines.

From the results of both methods, I created a style proposal consisting of 20 tweets, that formed a tweet style, along with a set of guidelines for good civil-servant tweeting. The style I’m presenting tries to address the purpose of dialogue in a better, more suitable way, by being personal, engaged, present and clear.

Klarspråk och malltexter: En studie om klarspråk och malltexter för att främja läsbarhet i beslutsbreven från Stadsbyggnadsförvaltningen i Eskilstuna kommun2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to explore what factors make technical communication accessible and easily understandable. The thesis would result in a readable cheat sheet, made for users of a new CMS system.

The work was made in collaboration with Telia. The company is looking over its information systems to implement a so-called PIM system (Product Information Management) in the near future. The CMS system will be a part of that system and the change of process will also lead to changes in the work procedures and tasks of the personnel at Telia.

To solve this problem, I made an interview with a focus group and a questionnaire amongst the target group. I asked myself what technical communication could contribute to in the making of instructional material and also in what purposes you read that type of material.

With these methods, and of course the theory of this thesis, in mind I produced a prototype of what the cheat sheet would look like. I also tested the cheat sheet at my target group, to get their opinion on the material to make the appropriate improvements.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The overall intention of this research project is to increase knowledge regarding design processes in general and artists' design processes specifically. The research is carried out as a case study based on the sketch processes that took place within Projekt Konstpaus (The Art Break Project). The sketches, or suggested designs, are the main objective for analysis and consideration in this study.

Projekt Konstpaus (The Art Break Project) is a development project partially financed by the European Union (EU). The vision of the project embodied equality, multiculturalism and sustainable community development. The municipality of Strängnäs, Sweden was the leading partner in the project and provided the necessary support for the project idea, financing and infrastructure. The innovative aim of the project was to have various groups of people from different backgrounds working together in the same processes. The project team consisted of several artists and people with university educations, such as archaeologists, cultural geographers, biologists and geologists. The main objective of the project team was to provide the basis for the construction of a culturally inspired walking and bicycle path. Several rest spots/rest stops (“konstpauser”) designed with artistic character and influenced primarily by the municipality’s extensive nature/cultural heritage will be found along the path (which has been approved for construction). One initial task of the project team was to make an inventory of the nature and culture artifacts within the project area as a means of promoting nature/culture preservation for the benefit of future generations through information sharing. The walking/bicycle path will be accessible to all, with special provision for physically challenged individuals. The intention is to provide an environment for both quietude and physical recreation.

The artists within the project embedded their artistic interpretations of the inventory and communicated them by suggesting artistic designs (sketches) related to the planned path. A jury then considered the sketches. Sketch, text, models and jury decisions (regarding the designs) are the objective of this research. The analysis of the material (sketches, texts, models and jury decisions, both oral and written) exposes the artistic processes. It is also the key to understanding the messages the artists intend to convey through their suggested designs. It is important to realize the significance (specific characteristics) of different types of sketches to be able to make decisions based on sketch materials. When sketches are examined, this awareness is central to making the right decision. In this study, three different types of sketches are examined, and the reading of each type is discussed.

When studying the suggested designs, insight was gained regarding the differences between using computer-aided design and traditional sketch tools. Knowledge was also increased concerning the development of sketch techniques generally, and when using computers specifically. A dualism of sight and seeing in terms of the visualization of an idea exists, and it is discussed in the light of empirical examples. It is also placed in relation to important technological steps taken earlier in history. The use of Camera Obcura as a helpful tool for composition is one such step. The use of this tool impacted on how the inner view was changed and, with that, manners of expression as well. This is seen in the composition of paintings and the use of language. Our thinking is influenced by what we see, and that, in turn, influences our thoughts. In our contemporary western paradigm, our commonly-held definition of "seeing" is influenced by computer-gained visual representations and the processes used when producing them. The study confirms that while this particular type of sketch exposes the suggested design idea a bit clearer than traditional sketches, it also reveals errors in the suggested designs. I have also found that both written and spoken language routes the interpretation of sketch material. In terms of understanding how the suggested designs are chosen by a jury, this component (the spoken or written language) was seen in the empirical material revealed in this study. It was also theoretically confirmed.

Together with an overall insight into the artistic processes, this study confirms the possibility of using artists in a development process. In this project, the process was to promote nature and culture preservation. It is valuable to integrate diverse areas of knowledge in the same process. This is true in both a social and an environmental sense. Finally, findings in this analysis confirm that artists are able to convey messages through their suggested designs (sketches). Those messages include interpretations of place, space, history and findings related to the project area.

Ett steg i taget: Design av manual för en kognitivt nedsatt strokepatient2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Utvecklingssamtal i förskoleklass: Ett viktigt samtal2009Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Hockey is one of Sweden's most popular sports and involving many pepole, both on and off the rink. Hockeyligan.se is Elitseriens Official site and offers visitors the opportunity to follow the games directly from a computer via a text flow. In the live stream, there are many abbreviations that are difficult to understand. The objective of this study is to find a solution to how explain them without affecting the readability negatively.

The focus is on the textual piece and not the graphics and how information is presented. By doing textual analysis and an environmental scanning I hope to get enough knowledge to finally be able to make a design that achieves my goal of the study. That is to include all visitors.

The pilot study consisted of a readability analysis and a text analysis. The text analysis showed that the information currently provided is relevant but that the abbreviations should be explained in order to increase the ability to understand the content. Which my survey also confirms. They flew namely 77 percent said they felt that there is a general need for explanations of the terms.

The result was a design where the user uses his computer mouse to get the explanations of the abbreviations. By dragging the mouse over the word to bring up the explanation into a box called a tooltip, which does not affect readability. Briefly, we can say that the results of the study gives the reader the opportunity to decide if he / she wants to share the information or not. In this way, a box called a tooltip, it will not affect the readability

As for the textual study has given me the following results in terms of how to write explanatory texts for a tooltip on the Web:

    • Be brief.
    • Write it as required.
    • Think of your audience.

Framtagning av hjälpfunktion för PDM-system2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

tekniska funktioner i stridsvagnar.

    reducera denna kognitiva belastning.

Dette var vanskelig!: Ett arbete om målgruppsanpassning av och läsbarhet, läslighet och läsvärde i myndighetsinformation2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Effects of English as a Corporate Language on Communication in a Nordic Merged Company2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the business world facilitation of corporate communication through the use of a single language has become almost a standard procedure. There is little knowledge, however, regarding how working in a language other than the mother tongue affects our thought processes and functionality at work. This study is an attempt to clear some issues around the subject.

The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of the corporate language, English, on managers’ communication within the organisation.  The target group includes Finnish and Swedish managers working at a Nordic IT corporation, TietoEnator. The study was conducted by combining theoretical material on communication, language and culture with the empirical results of 7 qualitative interviews.

The results show us that using a shared corporate language has both advantages and disadvantages. English helps in company internationalisation and in creating a sense of belonging, but also complicates everyday communication. The main disadvantage that English has caused is the lack of social communication between members of different nations in an unofficial level.

The main conclusion is that the corporate language is not at all times sufficient fulfil the social needs of the members of the organisation. Through this lack of socialisation it is possible that the functionality of the organisation loses some of its competitive advantage in the business markets.

Bildbaserat informationsmaterial: Visuell information som hjälp för ett komplicerat betalsystem i kollektivtrafiken.2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

I got interested in this subject when I came in contact with Västtrafiks new paymentsystem myself during my visits in Gothenburg. I suspected problems with the informationmaterial regarding it and others seemed to share my opinion that the payment system wasdiffcult to understand. When I contacted Västtrafik and asked them about the paymentsystem they confirmed that some understanding diffculties had occurred. With thatconfirmation I decided to make it my project to look in to the matter. Some methods were used to identify the problems. The methods could again confirm thatthere were some problems with the payment system and that the information material wasa vital reason. Further research was conducted to get a more profound idea of the currentinformation material and how to make it more accessible for visitors and tourists. Theproject has been following a constant designing process to find alternative ways tocommunicate the information and make it more readable and legible with help fromseveral theories and discussions. The result became more graphic-based informationmaterial inspired with commercial – and attention principles. The purpose was to make an information material to ease the usage of Västtrafiksnew- and complicated payment system for visitors and tourists. The result of this projectwas shown to fulfill these criteria though the usability tests in the final stage of thedesigning process.

Designmöjligheter vid visualisering av nybyggnationer: En studie kring gestaltandet av dagsljusets flöde i en interiör över tid2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Visuella instruktioner: Säkra hjälpmedel för hur fria vikter kan användas2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Performance appraisals

    - a study of the performance appraisals significance as a tool for development in the public sector.

    Anders Larsson and Åsalill Olsson

Performance appraisals have been given a central role in leading businesses in the public sector and are seen as a tool to create development opportunities and achieve better results. This has resulted that performance appraisal in many organizations takes up capacity and time. This was the starting point of our interest to study whether the time spent on performance appraisals effectively pays for itself in the organization, in other words whether the effects expected actually are achieved. The paper examines first line managers` views on staff appraisal purposes and effects of a function within the Landstinget. The survey design, methodology and transaction are of qualitative and quantitative method with three different sources: literature review of previous research, interviews with first line managers in Landstinget Västmanland and the results from an employee satisfaction survey conducted on behalf of Landstinget Västmanland. The result shows that the majority of first line managers` views on the purpose of staff appraisal are that they have a focus on the individual worker and the work environment and not to any significant degree is their purpose linked to the work place goals or to improve the performance of the organization.

Keywords: leadership, performance appraisals, leadership styles, leader behavior, leader.

Att påvisa nyttan av god designad kommunikation.2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    designad kommunikation.

Låt den sista utvägen bli den första ingången: Att underlätta implementeringen av ett nytt intranät då dess föregångare underutnyttjats av de tänkta användarna2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to ease the implement of an upcoming intranet for a target group who had used the previous system to an unwanted low extent. After qualitative and quantitative studies I found that the users of the current intranet thought it was hard to navigate and did not understand neither the relevance of it in their own work nor knew which information it contained.

Since I did not have access to the new system by the time of the making of this thesis I concentrated on rectifying possible problems with the new system regarding the relevance and the contained information. With basis in a number of theories I produced an information brochure, whose object was to inform about the content and to convince the target group of the relevance and utility of the new intranet.

Creating Brand Awareness Through Event Marketing: The Off-Field Competition of Sportswear Companies in the Olympics2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Date: May 30, 2012

    Course Name: Master Thesis (EFO705)

Title: Creating Brand Awareness Through Event Marketing

The Off-Field Competition of Sportswear Companies in the Olympics

Authors: Laura Dolge and Malin Marmbrandt

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to research how companies are promoting themselves efficiently to increase brand awareness through advertisement in major sporting events, through viral marketing and athlete endorsement.

Research Questions: Firstly: What are the major differences and similarities between the official and non-official sponsors and their marketing activities when creating brand awareness in sporting events?

Secondly: How do official and non-official sponsoring companies increase brand awareness in sporting events through viral marketing activities?

Thirdly: How do official and non-official sponsoring companies increase brand awareness in sporting events through athlete endorsement?

Method: Data was collected with a qualitative multi-method approach that consists of observations of online social networks and media (netnography), and semi-structured interviews was applied.

Conclusion: The main differences between the official and the non-official sponsor´s marketing campaigns are that the official sponsor has the advantage of using the event’s logo in its campaigns, and is able to advertise during the event. Whilst, there are many rules that restricts the non-official company´s campaigns. Regardless, non-official sponsors are still able to associate themselves with the event by using creative viral marketing campaigns and endorsing athletes, thus create brand awareness by so called ambush marketing.

Att minnas en text: Ett examensarbete som undersöker hur tematisk struktur kan hjälpa oss att minnas vad vi läst2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to develop a proposal for how information about the laundry room can be designed so that even immigrants with limited or no skills in the Swedish language can read and understand. The study will also seek answers to whether such information can affect the negative behaviors associated with the use of common laundry rooms, and to what degree. This is because the information material is meant to help prevent misuse of the equipment, and lack of consideration for the rules in the laundry. The empirical basis consists primarily of problem seeking interviews conducted with both residents and employees of Kommunfastigheter in Eskilstuna. The interviews show that there are many problems in the common laundry rooms, and there are signs that there may be a need for more appropriate information. The results show that information about how to use the laundry room cannot be expected to affect the negative behaviors to any large extent, and should therefore be combined with other measures in order to achieve a level of influence that can lead to behavioral change.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

This study deals with the tours carried out in the manufacturing sector, at Alfa Laval in Eskilstuna. A large number of visitors, from a variety of backgrounds, go there to see how the manufacturing of separators works. With visitors I refer to the company’s customers, suppliers, students, in- house trainee courses, managers and senior citizens groups.

The study examines how these tours can be standardized using spatial design. The result shows the importance of working systematically with visualizing the work as well as the environment for optimizing the visitor's understanding. The study also reveals the differences that exist in the tours made, which is caused by the number of guides and the different target groups. The effect of this is many different versions of what is presented and what routes that are taken. The company may therefore appear inconsistent, or fail to give a consistent impression.

The amount of visual impressions in the factory complicates the clarity of a sign system and makes the guiding unclear. By establishing a number of stations to be visited in order, the flow through the plant is likely to become clearer. Furthermore, the understanding of the production is easier, when the route follows the same process that the product undergoes.

In this way the company maximizes the effect of their tours for all parties in a coherent, consistent and logical way.

In a society where more and more people are seeking medical care for their gender dysphoria, the society needs to be up to date with the latest research. There are many horror stories about how different the medical care for transgender persons is in different parts of Sweden, but there are also many positive stories.

The following work is based on that society overall does not understand what transgender persons are going through when they are in the medical care. Through tests with transgender people, relatives to transgender people and others, along with surveys with transgender people in medical care, I have discovered a gap. The aim of this work and the draft proposal is to increase the knowledge of this matter and thereby increase the well - being of transgender people in the medical care.

    Abstract [en]

This has been a practical innovation graduation project with

the focus of studying the impacts of downsizing on a learning

organization. The study took place at Karlsson Spools in Sala.

This has been a part of an ongoing EU project funded by the

European Social Fund, ESF. We have, with the help of

interviews and surveys, gathered information on the present

situation and with the help of theoretical studies built a

framework on how a learning organization is viewed in

    theory.

During our study we found that there are many components

to a learning organization. The company in question has

displayed some qualities that characterize a learning

organization such as a plan to train and further develop their

employees. The problem we found was lack of communication

and how this has resulted in a less successful outcome of the

ongoing courses. The reason for this has been primarily due to

major cuts in personnel. In that aspect we have found that the

downsizing has hurt the organization. It was, however,

unavoidable to make those cutbacks and we hope they can

move forward from this point. Luckily the project has just

begun and we hope that our suggestions will bring a more

cohesive structure to the project in the end.

In the recent past, has observations of the personal brand that individuals carry becomed more interesting. Because it has been shown to result in positive effects for the leadership and the organization. However, there are research's showing that personal brands of leaders can also lead to costly consequences for an organization.

Purpose: The study's purpose to examine how different leaders look at the concept of personal brand and if they believe it has a bearing on their leadership.

Method: Information has mainly been gathered from literatures and scientific articles. Some statistics and definitions of keywords are taken from a few websites. The survey consists of seven interviews with seven different leaders from different organizations located in the Stockholm region. All interviews follow the qualitative approach, using a semi-structured interview guide which was conducted in the respondents' offices.

Conclusion: The study explains the importance of a personal brand in a leadership, where the associated risks with it will also be presented. Besides this, the study, based on the respondents experiences, shows that personal brand is not used in leadership as a deliberate strategy. The respondents personal brands have been analyzed from a theoretical model, in which several flaws emerge. This is consistent with previous research that has shown the needs for more scientific work before leaders can or should make use of personal brand in their position.

Keywords: Impact and communications, leadership, organizations, personal brand.

”Kryddan i maten”: Redesign av en kokbok2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this project has been to redesign an already existing cook-book. The title of the book (directly translated), “Season in food – the year around with herbs and spices”, contains what the headline imposes: spices, herbs and food. But when the author tries to entwine these parts and communicate it to the reader it is not working all to well due to a poor and inconsistent graphic design.

I have followed the theories and values of information design when I redesigned the book layout with the intent to simplify the communication between author and reader. In the progress to make a complete dummie of the book I did multiple literature studies, book analysis, tests and a vast number of drafts.

In this report I will describe the whole process from start to finish. It is impossible to explain every aspect of every theory and still make it interesting to read. Instead I try to explain the processes in a more comprehensive way. But details are inevitable and at those times it helps to use the appendix.

Att kommunicera för poesievenemang: En undersökning av sex ungdomars kultur- och medievanor2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

There are no guidelines regarding how companies should design status updates on Facebook which attain good readability and engage the readers. Half the Swedish population are Facebook-users, but companies have yet to publish comprehensible messages on Facebook which effectively include the recipients. Inclusion is not just a matter of accessibility, but also of readability.

Therefore, I studied how status updates should be designed on Facebook in order to increase the readability and to engage the readers. My target group is 22-32 year olds, since the company I worked with wanted to target this group. I conducted my research through literature studies, interviews with the client, analysis of past status updates, questioned an expert in social media, and organized a group interview with the target group.

My research shows that status updates should contain information that is topical, informative and relevant to the target group. However, status updates should not contain too much information, since messages that are saturated with information are difficult for the audience to interact with. Status updates should be written seriously and give the readers an added value. The message should contain 50-250 characters. If the audience is unfamiliar with the subject in the status update, a longer message may be necessary. Nonetheless, status updates should not exceed 400 characters, as the readers will then lose interest. Status updates should be written in a simple and informal language.

Communication on Facebook requires specific guidelines, since social media differs from traditional media. The texts published here must be specifically adapted to Facebook. This requires an increased understanding of the demands Facebook as a medium puts on texts published on this social utility. Further research could therefore explore the way in which people read on Facebook, for example by using eye-tracking cameras.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines how a printed brochure can be adapted to a website. The aim of this study is to see how an information-rich text can be adapted to a digital format with focus on plain language and how structure can contribute to web adaptation of a text.

In this study I have worked with an information brochure about heat pumps, the brochure is a publication from the Swedish Energy Agency. On behalf of the Swedish Energy Agency I have revised some pages of the brochure and prepared them for a digital format. The target group of this information brochure is Swedish homeowners and energy and climate advisors. The advisors help and guide homeowners who are looking for information about heat pumps.

I have focused on theories of plain language, reading on screen, hierarchy, composition and disposition. A text analysis on the existing brochure has been performed and I have conducted a survey where I gathered opinions from the energy and climate advisors. I have also interviewed a heat pump expert at the Swedish Energy Agency and conducted usability test with homeowners.

The conclusions of my study are that web texts need to be concise and short. The usage of ordinary words is important and to always explain difficult phrases and technical words is of great help to the reader. A good example is to include a dictionary. It should be easy to get a quick overview of the site content and the user should see the full page info, having to scroll down complicates the overview and context. But the most important conclusion is that the writer needs to understand the target group and their previous knowledge.

    Abstract [en]

I have chosen to study H&M’s use of language when it comes to sustainable fashion. Instead of studying a range of sources, I have narrowed it down to the specific text På väg mot hållbart mode, which is a text presented on H&M’s external website www.hm.com. The purpose and fundamental objective of my study is how one can alter the language, as stated in Klarspråk, together with a distinct connection between word and action, which will engender a positive effect on both knowledge and guidance, hence how to affect sustainable fashion by means of consumption.

My study is founded upon two methods, one analysis of text and one semi-structured focus group. The purpose is to study how obtainable information is from H&M, seen from a young adults perspective, have their opinions on consumption in general and sustainable fashion in particular and understand their reflections on how business can create possibilities for a progressively more sustainable consumption.

With the foundation of previously carried out studies and my own acquired evidences, I have produced a new piece of work, written in a way using the outline stated by Klarspråk, aimed towards young people. This new text is based on two separate paragraphs from the text, which I have chosen to analyze. My own work is therefore written in a langue that is adapted to suit young people to become readable, legible and to have value. Furthermore, this work contains evident and clear guidance where one can find alternatives for sustainable fashion. I have also given thought to the placement of the text, i.e. on the web.

Comparison of topic organization in Finnish, Swedish-Finnish, and Swedish family discourse2004In: Discourse processes, ISSN 0163-853X, E-ISSN 1532-6950, Vol. 37, no 3, p. 225-248Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine whether there are cultural differences in topic organization and role-related topic control in dinner conversations; such differences may function as a means for socialization into communicative styles. The research was designed as a comparative study of two geographically close but linguistically very different ethnic groups: Swedes and Finns, including Finns in Sweden as an intermediate group. Previous research has shown Swedes to generate more talk and to produce considerably shorter pauses than Finns. Furthermore, previous studies have indicated that lengthy pauses often precede topic changes. Empirical data were collected by video recording conversations in each of the three cultural groups: 11 Finnish families in Finland, 11 Finnish immigrant families in Sweden, and I I Swedish families in Sweden. Due to the shared setting, the conversations displayed many similarities, but there were also some intercultural differences. The main result was that the Swedish family dinner discourse was significantly more encyclopedic and coherent than the Finnish and Swedish-Finnish one. The findings support the hypothesized connection between pausing and topic organization. The mothers in each group were most active in controlling topic development.

Social diversity and the recognition of intercultural understanding at Mälardalen University

This work shows in general terms some ways on how university teachers entered in touch with the social diversity at Mälardalen University. The work is based on interviews with teachers from three institutions, representative of the students and a survey directed to the heads of all departments of the university. The interviews were commanded during the spring of 2006. The report shows some of the different types of projects that the university has put in execution to increase social diversity, how the teachers started implementing different pedagogies to handle this diversity, the problems that examination of this new social diversity among students generates and what teachers and students want to improve. The present rapport also realizes how the work to increase social diversity creates the bases for meetings where teachers and students could develop insights on intercultural understanding.

The report consists of six chapters. Chapter one treats a general sight on the general context wherefrom the work to increase social diversity at Swedish universities emerges. Institutional incentives, internationalization of the university and international immigration created the bases for major possibilities of meeting the social diversity locally. Teachers told that these meetings gave them the possibility of thinking about the topic in dept. The teachers told on routes to start using theoretical perspectives like intersectionality, used to understand problems of power tied to differences, as well as ethical perspectives like intercultural understanding, used for navigating in the multicultural society.

Chapter two shows some examples pertaining projects where university teachers worked to increase the social diversity at the University. The area of discussion took root in analyzing what this work generated when introducing students of the first university year to the university’s academic life. Thanks to this work the teachers had better knowledge of the difficulties of self-steam and of socialization that the students experience when having met the academic Swedish culture.

The third chapter discusses how teachers face social diversity in their educational tasks. Here they gave examples of the positive experiences of the program of academic international interchange. Special attention is paid to the way these experiences can contribute to a process of internal internationalization in the local society, where the population with experiences of migration is notable enough.

The fourth chapter pertains to some aspects of power that emerge between students and teachers in the examination of the courses. The students’ representative made echo of diverse types of complaints concerning sexual insinuations, discriminations, and fear of expressing opinions in front teachers. Other aspects were expressed by the teachers on socio-centric ways of referring to education, intervening against the creation of exclusionary groups among the students, differences of ages between teachers and students, as well as weak idiomatic development of some groups of students. In general all these aspects were seen as cardinals to explain misbalances of power that try to explain why many students are passive during the educational process. These aspects seem to prevent some teachers from emitting fair qualifications. At the same time these aspects ground the bases for conflicts between students and teachers.

The fifth chapter discusses three lines that the interviewees want to see to assure a good work to increase the social diversity at the University. The first line is to strengthen the pedagogic work in the long term. The interviewed thought it is important to rethink the concept of diversity. Besides that, they considered the possibility of developing the programs of international interchange from being bi-cultural (Swedish - English) into being more multicultural. Another aspect in discussion was to introduce the aspects of social diversity in the different plans of introduction directed to new students, to develop new forms of examination and to introduce all these in the ongoing Bologna process. The second line deal with regional collaboration. This collaboration can be stimulated designing practical applied courses. These courses are important to recruit more working class men with long labour experience to study at the university. Other initiatives that want support are to develop short courses for immigrants with high educational levels and developing distant courses for students who cannot live in the cities of Eskilstuna and Västerås, where the Mälardalen University main buildings are located. The third line pertains to efforts that the university must to take further in order to increase social diversity. Some examples are to enlarge the social diversity among investigators and teachers; to secure and increase the pedagogic help for the many students who use to need it; a better distribution of resources between the faculties and a mainstreaming of the work on social diversity at the University. Another important desire from the teachers is to continue evaluating how the work for increasing social diversity develops.

In general features the work shows recognition of the social diversity at the university. This diversity is observed as a positive quality that generates a constructive attitude to social differences. The different initiatives that the university threw to increase the diversity have been fundamental to advance this work. This kind of what internationally is called affirmative action plans have changed the university’s social landscape for ever.

The final chapter is dedicated to thinking about three important aspects in relation to these changes. The first aspect is the positive consequences on democracy thought to accept diversity and difference is cardinal to have a constructive attitude to the problems of power that come from a society characterized by social differences. The second aspect is that pedagogic innovations are basic to continue recognizing intercultural understanding. The third aspect is that these democratic and pedagogic aspects give the university own experiences about facing multicultural challenges. This work does that the university can play a more credibly role at the top of the work for a sustainable and democratic regional development congruent to the challenges that face the multicultural society.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This is a study about the balance between freedom and structure in the information design of an exhibition based on hands-on education. Work is focused on the exhibition The Human Body at Tom Tits Experiment in Södertälje. The exhibition, which was built in 1997, was designed with the idea that signs create barriers and a reluctance to advertise about the "right way".

The exhibition space has now been compressed and experiments have been grouped into two sections. In connection with this change, the signs in the exhibition come to be reviewed. This is because parents and other adult visitors expressed a desire for more information. The need for information is divided into labels for individual experiments and signage for the exhibition's theme. How this demand can be met without going against the pedagogy and aesthetics that Tom Tits believe is the central point of the work. The solution was based on the thesis that it is possible to gather information at one point to minimize the number of signs in the exhibition.

Through methods as qualitative interviews, questionnaire survey and spatial analysis have an understanding of the complexity of the problem created. Which largely deals with the contrasts between the child's curiosity and the controlling adult world. The design solution that has been developed, resulting in three (instead of one) points where the focus has been on establishing the exhibition's theme and encourage interactivity. There has also been a quest for uniformity and flexibility, then the problem is not found to the current exhibition and information design throughout the house lacks a common thread. Whereupon consideration has been given to Tom Tits visual profile and the aesthetic that is seen as characteristic of the business. Studies circuits thus largely about Tom Tits, but it is hoped that the work interests a number of players, then a pursuit of general guidelines for the transmission of information have existed.

Professionals’ and parents’ shared learning in blended learning networks related to communication and augmentative and alternative communication for people with severe disabilities2015In: European Journal of Special Needs Education, ISSN 0885-6257, E-ISSN 1469-591X, Vol. 30, no 3, p. 367-383Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

People with severe disabilities (SD) communicate in complex ways, and their teachers, parents and other involved professionals find it difficult to gain knowledge and share their experiences regarding the person with SD’s communication methods. The purpose of this study is to contribute to our understanding of how parents and professionals share learning about communication and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for people with SD by participating in blended learning networks (BLNs). Thirty-six parents and professionals participated in online web-based BLNs according to a prepared format; four groups were formed, and all of the groups participated in four discussion sessions and an evaluation session. Detailed minutes from the 16 BLN sessions, an evaluation session and course evaluation data were thematically analysed. The theoretical frameworks were different perspectives on disability within communication research and special education research, and theories about shared learning in networks. The analyses revealed themes that focused on communication partners’ knowledge, attitudes and strategies regarding communicating with people with SD; the importance and power of using multimodal AAC; and the universality, user-friendliness and empowering aspects of iPads and apps. The findings suggest that participants perceive communication and AAC with people with SD from relational, dialogical and interactional perspectives, whereas the categorical perspective was less pronounced. In accordance with other professional competence research, the use of online web-based BLNs with mixed groups that was described in this paper yielded positive evaluations from the participants. The opportunity for meeting others involved in caring for people with SD, the actual blended groups and the sharing of technology and AAC experiences in particular were highlighted.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this project was to find out how reading is affected, and not affected, by different elements on a start page. The site I was studied belongs to the magazine Fitness Magazine, and the current site has a problem. The editorial texts and articles don’t reach out to the visitors. The goal was to make a proposal for a new first page of the web site that highlights the texts and the reading. With the help of interviews, user testing and textual analysis, I studied if the texts were in itself that caused the problem or if it was the design. I found that it was a combination of text and design that caused the problems. The results showed that some elements of a website is needed to help the reader in the right direction while some elements was more noise that destroyed communication. The noise consisted of color combinations that fooled the brain, a logo that did not appear right, wrongly-placed ads, articles that were not suited for the web and a menu that was not located and designed to benefit the reading. I have made a design in which I tried to remove the noise to make the information more readable to visitors.
