Simulation as an Enabler for ProductionSystem Development within the Indoor Vertical Farming Industry2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

With the increase in food consumption, new ideas, and technologies began to be developed. Inaddition, the developments generated by Industry 4.0 technologies have started to be applied tothe entire manufacturing sector and the indoor farming industry, which is currently trending. Many studies and articles have been prepared on this subject, and the main goal of each study isto produce quality products and to ensure continuity in production to cover the nonendingincrease in demand.

This paper discusses how simulation technology, which is one of the industry 4.0 technologies, can be used in the production system development of the indoor farming industry. According tomany researchers, the biggest obstacle for the vertical farming industry is start-up cost, andsimulation technologies can be the solution for this since it allows future production systems tobe analyzed without any investment. To have a clear vision of how these technologies can beadapted in the indoor farming industry, this paper will find the answers to these questions, RQ1:How can simulation facilitate production system development and Industry 4.0 projects withinthe indoor farming industry? RQ2: What are the benefits and challenges when using simulationas a tool for production system development within the indoor farming industry? To reach thegoal of this paper, the case study method was used, and an indoor farming company was selectedto get more realistic data about the vertical farming system. BlueRedGold AB is a start-upcompany in the indoor farming industry, and it has a huge growth potential since they aim totransform its current production lines to be fully automated. Many articles and studies were usedto approach the solution of the research questions from a more technical and academic point ofview, and the analysis of these articles was carried out with the structured literature review method.

After conducting this research, answers have been obtained for the research questions. Theauthors' solution to the layout issue, one of the case company's main challenges as indicated inthis study, was developed after extensive simulation model testing. As highlighted in this paper,it has been stated by many researchers, there are several simulation approaches to follow. However, the authors have developed a simulation modeling approach to be followed in theindoor vertical farming industry to overcome the complexity of these systems as well as thesimulation program complexity. In addition, several challenges and benefits have beenhighlighted in this paper such as the lack of ready models of the equipment used in indoorfarming which requires a knowledge of a programing language to overcome. Finally, despitechallenges, simulation technology can provide an applicable solution for production systemproblems of vertical farming companies/organizations to obtain continuous improvementphilosophy which is the main principle of Lean thinking. The generated simulation model in thisthesis project was successfully implemented, demonstrating how this technology might be aneffective solution for complex production systems as in the indoor farming sector.

    Abstract [sv]

Supporting pre-development of new manufacturing technologies2015Licentiatavhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In today’s tough industrial environment, efficient development of new products and new manufacturing solutions is necessary to stay competitive on a global market. Manufacturing companies use substantial money and development resources to develop new products. However, the resources spent on finding and implementing emerging manufacturing technologies are much more limited. This is often the case even though it is well known that a way of competing on a global market is through the introduction of new manufacturing technologies that can improve product quality as well as contribute to reducing manufacturing time, resulting in reduced product price and in the end increased profit.

When introducing new manufacturing technologies, different challenges arise such as lack of knowledge, involvement of an external equipment supplier, etc. In addition, time-to-volume is critical when introducing new manufacturing technologies in a manufacturing context. To be able to have a fast ramp-up, manufacturing technology needs to be mature enough and at the same time meet all requirements. Efficient introduction of new manufacturing technologies requires that pre-development activities have been performed in advance.

Previous research in this area highlights a lack of knowledge and solutions regarding pre-development of new manufacturing technologies. Such pre-development is important in order to have a successful introduction, fast time-to-volume and production system development. Based on these challenges, the objective of the research presented in this thesis is to develop support for pre-development of new manufacturing technologies.

The research is based on literature reviews and three empirical case studies, carried out over a two-year period of time. The first empirical case study was an exploratory case study in the manufacturing industry. The purpose of that research study was to identify critical factors forcing manufacturing companies to improve the development of manufacturing technologies.

The second study was a longitudinal embedded case study in the manufacturing industry with the purpose of identifying factors that affect evaluation of new manufacturing technologies during new product development. Particular attention was given to the product development process and how it has affected the evaluation of new manufacturing technologies.

Finally, the third study was a single case study in the manufacturing industry with the purpose of analysing and discussing the assessment of the maturity level of a manufacturing technology.

The fuzzy front end of manufacturing technology development2019Inngår i: International Journal of Manufacturing Technology and Management (IJMTM), ISSN 1368-2148, E-ISSN 1741-5195, Vol. 33, nr 5, s. 285-302Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The fuzzy front end of product development has been studied extensively in previous research, while the fuzzy front end of manufacturing technology development has been largely neglected despite its importance. Only a few empirical studies that examine the fuzzy front end of manufacturing technology development can be found, which have been primarily carried out in the process industry. Therefore, the overall purpose of this paper is to explore the fuzzy front end of manufacturing technology development. Based on three case studies carried out in the manufacturing industry, the findings of the current research highlight key activities in the fuzzy front end of manufacturing technology development and suggest that the fuzzy front end has four sub-phases with overlapping development activities.

    Abstract [en]

This report is written during a project done by two students at Mälardalen University during the course DVA331. The purpose of this project was to determine if it was possible to reduce the latency on devices with Windows 10 to what is possible on an iOS device. The reason behind this research is that Windows 10 has come with an API that supports low latency sounds. This study was made on an iPhone 4S, iPhone 6, Nokia Lumia 720 and a Nokia Lumia 920 with a contact microphone that was put on the device. The latency was measured 50 times per version of an application implemented for both operating systems. The latency could be measured between the point where the surface is touched and and the point where sound is audible, using the microphone and the audio processing software Audacity. The readings proved that iOS is still a lot faster than Windows 10 and that Windows 10 is way above the accepted audio processing limit. Further research showed that the Windows 10 reading results were caused by the Lumia devices long input latency. User tests were made on 10 individuals with the response that the latency on the Windows 10 devices was a lot longer than the iOS devices. The conclusion was that the Lumia devices used in this study were not suitable for responsive sound applications but that Windows 10 devices with lower input latency that are better suited and that new readings should be done to determine if this is the case.

Diagnosing the Cause and Its Timing of Changes in Multivariate Process Mean Vector From Quality Control Charts Using Artificial Neural Network2011Inngår i: World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology: An International Journal of Science, Engineering and Technology, ISSN 2010-376X, Vol. 78, s. 212-217Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Quality control charts are very effective in detecting out of control signals but when a control chart signals an out of control condition of the process mean, searching for a special cause in the vicinity of the signal time would not always lead to prompt identification of the source(s) of the out of control condition as the change point in the process parameter(s) is usually different from the signal time. It is very important to manufacturer to determine at what point and which parameters in the past caused the signal. Early warning of process change would expedite the search for the special causes and enhance quality at lower cost. In this paper the quality variables under investigation are assumed to follow a multivariate normal distribution with known means and variance-covariance matrix and the process means after one step change remain at the new level until the special cause is being identified and removed, also it is supposed that only one variable could be changed at the same time. This research applies artificial neural network (ANN) to identify the time the change occurred and the parameter which caused the change or shift. The performance of the approach was assessed through a computer simulation experiment. The results show that neural network performs effectively and equally well for the whole shift magnitude which has been considered.

Multi criteria decision making with Evidential Reasoning under uncertainty2016Inngår i: IEEE International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management, 2016, s. 1534-1538Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Many decision problems have more than one objective that need to be dealt with simultaneously. Moreover, because of the qualitative nature of the most of real world problem it is an inevitable activity and very important to interpret and present the uncertain information for making effective decision. The Evidential Reasoning (ER) approach which is one of the latest development within multi criteria decision making (MCDM) seems to be the best fit to synthesize both qualitative and quantitative data under uncertainty. To support this claim, two case studies were tested to illustrate the application of ER for prioritization and ranking of decision alternative to support decision process even with uncertain information. The importance of having a better structured decision process is essential for the success of any organization, so it can be applied widely in most of real world problem dealing with making effective decision.

Risk Prioritization Based on Health, Safety and Environmental Factors by Using Fuzzy FMEA2013Inngår i: International Journal of Mining, Metallurgy & Mechanical Engineering, ISSN 2320-4052, Vol. 1, nr 4, s. 233-237Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Failure Mode and Effects Analysis is assessing technique which relies to the rule of preventing failure, which is used to identify potential hazards. This method is used with minimum risks to predict the problems and deficits in design stage or development of the processes and services in organizations. The methods main principal is based on multiplying three main parameters: severity, occurrence, detection. This method with all the advantages still has minor disadvantages that in this paper attempts has been made to eliminate these deficiencies by fuzzification. Results show that fuzzy FMEA will enables us to evaluate situations correctly and precisely.

Remaining useful life prediction of grinding mill liners using an artificial neural network2013Inngår i: Minerals Engineering, ISSN 0892-6875, E-ISSN 1872-9444, Vol. 53, s. 1-8Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Knowing the remaining useful life of grinding mill liners would greatly facilitate maintenance decisions. Now, a mill must be stopped periodically so that the maintenance engineer can enter, measure the liners' wear, and make the appropriate maintenance decision. As mill stoppage leads to heavy production losses, the main aim of this study is to develop a method which predicts the remaining useful life of the liners, without needing to stop the mill. Because of the proven ability of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to recognize complex relationships between input and output variables, as well as its adaptive and parallel information-processing structure, an ANN has been designed based on the various process parameters which influence wear of the liners. The process parameters were considered as inputs while remaining height and remaining life of the liners were outputs. The results show remarkably high degree of correlation between the input and output variables. The performance of the neural network model is very consistent for data used for training (seen) and testing (unseen).

Application of multi regressive linear model and neural network for wear prediction of grinding mill liners2013Inngår i: International Journal of Advanced Computer Sciences and Applications, ISSN 2158-107X, E-ISSN 2156-5570, Vol. 4, nr 5, s. 52-58Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The liner of an ore grinding mill is a critical component in the grinding process, necessary for both high metal recovery and shell protection. From an economic point of view, it is important to keep mill liners in operation as long as possible, minimising the downtime for maintenance or repair. Therefore, predicting their wear is crucial. This paper tests different methods of predicting wear in the context of remaining height and remaining life of the liners. The key concern is to make decisions on replacement and maintenance without stopping the mill for extra inspection as this leads to financial savings. The paper applies linear multiple regression and artificial neural networks (ANN) techniques to determine the most suitable methodology for predicting wear. The advantages of the ANN model over the traditional approach of multiple regression analysis include its high accuracy.

Proaktiva Produktnedläggningsbeslut: En Forskningsstudie om Utmaningar, Möjligheter och Effektiva Åtgärder inom Industriella Företagskontexter2024Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Conceptual sustainable production principles in practice: Do they reflect what companies do?2017Inngår i: Journal of Cleaner Production, ISSN 0959-6526, E-ISSN 1879-1786, Vol. 141, s. 693-701Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

A common understanding of sustainable production principles and the identification of sustainable manufacturing practices among practitioners are key starting points in studying how manufacturers are making their operations more sustainable. However, there is a lack of insight in the literature connecting conceptual sustainable production principles, and the practices reflecting these principles. Using semi-structured interviews founded on the sustainable production principles posed by the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production, this paper presents an outlook of how companies in different industries carry out manufacturing practices related to the sustainability production principles. Results showed that the majority of sustainable manufacturing practices remain strongly centered on the environmental dimension of sustainability, with the greatest number of practices emanating from principles concerning energy and material conservation, and waste management. Similarly, reactive sustainable manufacturing practices prevailed over proactive sustainable manufacturing practices, as most of the practices aimed to comply with regulatory and market pressures. Quality and environmental management systems were acknowledged as important tools for putting sustainable production principles into practice; while Swedish environmental and social regulations were found to drive sustainable manufacturing practices. This study connects sustainable production principles with sustainable manufacturing practices and opens the way for further studies on a global or sector-specific scale.

Economic lifetime prediction of a mining drilling machine using an artificial neural network2014Inngår i: International Journal of Mining, Reclamation and Environment, ISSN 1748-0930, E-ISSN 1748-0949, Vol. 28, nr 5, s. 311-322Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This study develops models for predicting the economic lifetime of drilling machines used in mining. It uses three cases, each represented by a MATLAB code, to develop an optimisation model. The resulting ORT is fed as input to an artificial neural network (ANN) and the results translated into a relatively simple equation. The study finds that increasing the purchase price and decreasing the operating and maintenance costs will increase a machine's ORT linearly. Decreased maintenance cost has the largest impact on ORT, followed by increased purchase price and decreased operating cost. The ANN method gives a series of basic weight and response functions which can be made available to any engineer without the use of complicated software. It also helps decision-makers determine the best time economically to replace an old machine with a new one; thus, it can be extended to more general applications in the mining industry.

Brainstorming VS Nominal group technique online: En jämförelse mellan idégenereringsmetoderna brainstorming och nominal group technique i en online miljö2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Global Village: Ett utvecklingsarbete av konceptet Global Village utifrån co-creation perspektiv2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Oita University in Japan has created a meeting space called the Global Village that was inspired by Marshall McLuhan's (1962) theory that globalization contributes to an increased community between people from different parts of the world. It was created to increase interaction among students on campus and is intended for both international and local students. The vision for the place is for individuals to exchange information, knowledge, ideas, and cultures which promotes knowledge exchange and shared learning. However, the University of Oita faces a challenge regarding the Global Village as there is a lack of participation and interaction in the place. Which leads to the vision of Global Village not being fulfilled. The purpose of this thesis is to study how the students experience the Global Village. This was done to gain an understanding of how the place works and to develop ideas to improve the Global Village with the support of the co-creation perspective. Co-creation is about collaboration between individuals who could create some kind of value in the form of new ideas and solutions. Based on the problems identified in the study, the improvement ideas have been inspired by the co-creation theory to include in the Global Village at the university. The study was based on a qualitative approach to answer the research questions and there were several semi-structured interviews conducted with students from Oita University. The study found that open innovation has some factors that are important for developing the concept of the Global Village. And to make it a well-functioning co-creation space that provides value for the students. Those factors that were used within open innovation are networking and value creation, which were an inspiration to create a model. The different solution in the model is based on the problems that were identified in the Global Village. The model contains several different solution proposals to improve the Global Village at Oita University.

Battery Connector - Examensarbete, Produktutveckling - konstruktion2013Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

A framework supporting the collaboration between the logistics- and the product development process2007Licentiatavhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In the competitive environment of today’s global markets, the demands of customers are increasing. They expect to get the best product at the lowest price with immediate availability. Logistics, including transportation, inventory maintenance, order processing, purchasing, warehousing, materials handling, packaging, customer service standards, and product scheduling must continuously be developed to meet the challenges of the market. The globalization, with longer distances to customers and suppliers, and the progressing trend of outsourcing are examples of why the importance of logistics has increased over the last few years.

A considerable part of the final product cost is frozen during the early product development phases. In the early phases of the product development process, the cost of making design changes is low compared to making changes later in the product development process. The product development decisions made in the early phases of the product development process have considerable impact on future manufacturing and logistics activities as well.

The objective of this research project is to develop a framework supporting the collaboration between the logistics- and the product development process. To do this, it has been essential to analyze which parameters influence the efficiency of the logistics process and the interface between the logistics- and the product development process. Also, to investigate how the logistics department can be integrated earlier in the product development process has been of interest. This has been done through both a theoretical review and also through a number of case studies.

The result and conclusion of this project is a framework that gives support for what to focus on, how to collaborate, in which phases collaboration is meaningful, and which persons need to be involved in the different product development phases. Working as the framework suggests will, hopefully, give closer collaboration between the logistics- and the product development process than without this supportive framework. The expectation of the collaboration is an earlier integration of the logistics department in the product development process and through this influence and increase the efficiency of the logistics process.

On the complexity of using performance measures: Enhancing sustained production improvement capability by combining OEE and productivity2015Inngår i: Journal of manufacturing systems, ISSN 0278-6125, E-ISSN 1878-6642, Vol. 35, s. 144-154Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The global speed of change within the manufacturing industry forces companies to constantly improve production performance. In that effort, performance measures are critical for driving and managing production improvements. Two of the most commonly used measures in operations are productivity and overall equipment efficiency (OEE). However, the potential of using these measures as improvement drivers is not fully utilized in industry today due, for example, to ambiguities in definitions and their interpretation. A study of available theory indicates a gap between these implications from a theoretical perspective vs. the industrial perspective. Bridging this theory-practice gap implies great potential for competitiveness and growth in manufacturing, since the latent production capacity that could be utilized is tremendous. Even if a high degree of complexity in definition and calculation when applied in operational conditions might be perceived, this paper will show that a systematically used combined set of OEE and productivity measures can successfully drive production improvements. Also, two new productivity measures for driving improvements at the shop floor level are proposed. The empirical findings are based on a two-year case study within a manufacturing company in the automotive industry using an interactive research approach.

    Abstract [en]

This paper discusses the experience and learning from introducing programming in a museum exhibition design course. Thirty-seven information design students from Sweden, with no previous experience in programming, participated in the course in 2014 and 2015. The students' tasks were to create interactive exhibition stations at a county museum in five weeks. We introduced Arduino and Processing programming in the course to enlarge the information design students' repertoire and to find ways to develop the interactive aspects of the exhibition medium. We aim to identify and discuss challenges and strengths when introducing code as design material in design education. The education of future exhibition designers is an important matter relevant the TEI community.

External conditions have a significant impact on the air flow in tunnels using transverse ventilation for smoke extraction2012Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In 2008 the City of Stockholm Traffic Administration conducted a series of full scale tests, with heat and smoke generation equivalent to that from a fire in a small car, in one of their urban tunnels with transverse ventilation. The primary goal of the tests was to verify how the ventilation system worked and also to provide an opportunity for the local fire brigade and consultants in this field to see what one could expect in a similar situation. A total of four different tests were carried out at two different locations in the tunnel. Methanol was chosen as fuel and the smoke was produced from smoke machines. The ventilation conditions were set according to a pre-set function to simulate both low and high traffic conditions and the fire ventilation was activated 10 minutes after ignition of the simulated car fire. The result of the tests illustrated a variety of phenomena where the external conditions and the general design of the tunnel had a significant impact on the air flow. These aspects determined the direction of airflow in the tunnel regardless of the pre-set ventilation settings. The ventilation settings for the different traffic cases had a significant impact on the stratification of smoke in the event of a fire.

Meningsförändrande innovationer inom industrirobotbranschen: En explorativ fallstudie2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis the subject innovation and the change of meaning is in focus. The purpose of the study is to present a new dimension of innovation as a change of meaning together with the cases we’ve studied. It is discussed throughout the article if theories of perception and association can affect the organization and its ability to create meaning-changing innovations. The industrial robotics is a market in need of, perhaps, if not other markets but of finding new ground that results in the change of meaning. What happens when you stand at the intersection of main areas in the field of innovation? Is it possible that meaningful change can be found here, amongst radical innovation and industrial robotic arms and it’s technology? Our methods were interviews and prior research complementing the cases we’ve presented. We want to show how meaning can change various dimensions. Together with a perceptual theory and an innovation theory we’ve found out that meaning and innovation can go hand in hand.

CLASSIFYING BASIL AFTER THEIR DIFFERENT GROWTH STAGES USING MACHINE LEARNING2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis covers the topic of applying machine learning within the agriculture industry. Thegoal of this project was to set out with the intent of using computers in trying to classify plantsafter their different growth stages with the hope of making it easier for the regular person to growthe their own food. The project set out with trying 3 different machine learning algorithms to getand perspective on how they performed for this specific problem, but also to get an overview onhow the algorithms performed compared to each other. The result and conclusion showed that thealgorithms are currently unfeasible to use, mostly because of the lack of data. Though the resultstill were promising as it proved the concept and that there is potential for further developments onthe work, like the tinkering on the algorithms but mostly of gathering data.

‘Company-selfies’ Boundary Negotiating Artefacts in Group Discussions on Innovation2015Inngår i: The Proceedings of The XXVI ISPIM Conference 2015 Budapest, Hungary - 14-17 June 2015, Budapest, Hungary, 2015Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, one practice-oriented approach to incorporate nonexperts in early stages of innovation work is presented and analysed: the method of photo-based group discussions on innovation. The result is based on studies in 7 different organizations during 2013-2014. The method was developed as a response to a current innovation management problem in manufacturing companies in mid-Sweden, i.e. the problem how to enable all employees to use their talent and potential in relation to innovation initiatives on all levels. The results show how the photographs were used by the participants to negotiate different interpretations of innovation. The photographs were used for self-reflection, borrowing, inclusion and denominating actions. The results contribute to the theoretical understanding in the innovation management community of photographs in innovation processes. It does so by the introduction of the notion 'company-selfie' and the analyse of the photograph as a boundary negotiation artefact in groupdiscussion on innovation.

Design to engage?: Embodied information in control rooms2015Inngår i: Vision Plus 2015 Conference VisionPlus, Birmingham City , United Kingdom, 2015Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Information and the design of information effect the situation in control rooms for automated industrial processes. The design conveys to the operators the state and changes of state of the process. According to the common view among control room equipment developers, issues for design in highly automated control rooms, include the operators likely ignoring information, being bored and are not noticing variations until the variation triggers an alarm. Such problems can have economic and environmental consequences. In the highly automated control rooms of the future, these risks of can be dealt with from various point of view. The current thinking behind human-computer interaction (HCI) design is engineering the ‘human factor’ instead of understanding the human situation. Visionary areas in computing might convert HCI product development processes to design-driven processes that focus on user experience. The TAIPA research project presented in this paper focuses on the user experience in two control rooms. Based on the results and previous research, we examine how the information might be given a tangible and ambient design to engage operators. This paper presents illustrations of aspects of future design for the control room.

Kompetensutveckling för ökad innovationsförmåga i småföretag2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Digital Co-production for Users Through Feedback Loops: A descriptive and applied study in the digital automation industry2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

A feedback loop is a method used to collect, store and handle provided feedback. It also includes methods for working with lessons learned since learnings are seen as the backbone of feedback loops, since they cannot be successful without learnings. Research regarding knowledge development, particularly feedback loops and lessons learned, is in need for further research to understand how industrial organisations working with digital automation and processes can work with and manage feedback and lessons learned in a cross-functional and co-productive setting. To study this, the research was conducted through a co-production between the researcher and ABB AB as a case company. The collaboration allowed for deep insights in work methods, as well as how feedback loops are worked with and used today along with desired methods for feedback loops and sharing of lessons learned. To achieve this, multiple user interviews were conducted as well as an observation and meetings with other stakeholders and follow-up sessions with the case company. This study also compares perspectives of existing feedback loops with each other as well as a new developed feedback loop designed for industrial organisations working with digital automation and digital processes.

A different Africa: Spatial information design for a safer refugee settlement2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis was to explore the spatiality’s affect on refugee’s sense of safety in the Osire refugee settlement in Namibia. The gathered empirics together with previous research and theories should lead to a design for a spatial information system. The system should contribute to peoples’ understanding of their environments’ whole structure as well as showing the way to the health centre and the police station, thus increasing their sense of psychological and physical safety. A wish was also to breathe life into the point of intersection of spatial information design and human science.

The methods used to enable this were first and foremost a field study in the settlement to experience and acquire first-hand information. In addition observation, introspection and several interviews were conducted.

As a result I established safety to be an issue that could be solved with spatial design. Refugees expressed that not knowing your environment or finding your way leaves you scared, uncomfortable and confused. With the use of a spatial information system safety can literally be created, as demonstrated in the design proposal. The conclusion is that much could be done to spatially solve complex issues as long as it’s addressed from that perspective.
