Abstract [en]

Delphi Automotive PLC has per-formed a drive from San Francisco, California (Figure 1) to New York, New York (Figure 2) with 99% of the drive in a fully automated mode (Figure 3). Along the way, the vehicle encountered complex driving situations such as traffic circles, construction zones, bridges, tunnels, aggressive drivers, and a variety of weather conditions. The drive was used by Delphi engineers to research and collect information that will help further advance active safety technology, which currently is the most rapidly growing technology sector of the automobile industry. The team collected nearly three terabytes of data-about 30% of all of the printed material in the Library of Congress. Delphi's automat-ed driving vehicle, called Roadrunner, is equipped with six long-range radars, four short-range radars, three vision-based cameras, six lidars, a localization system, intelligent software algorithms, and a full suite of advanced drive assistance systems (ADAS), many of which are already on the market today, including collision mitigation, integrated radar, camera systems, and forward collision and lane departure warning.
