Abstract [en]

This essays focus is to study two municipalities’ environment- and sustainable development, in relation to the meaning and understanding of the concept. In this case the concepts of Agenda 21 and sustainable development are examined within the municipal community. Sustainable development is a vague and flexible concept that has many meanings. To define sustainable development, the Brundtland report is the basis of the definition of the concept. This study compares two municipalities, Botkyrka and Tyresö, which both are within the Stockholm area. These municipalities have been chosen because they resemble each other geographically, and are both on the outskirts of Stockholm. Municipalities work in different ways to sustain the environment, and this effort can be different depending on the problems, expectation, priorities, and preventive measures they hold. This study is a comparative case study, which means that municipalities have been compared to each other. The work of conversation interviews and review of official documents have been used, where the analysis method for this work is a qualitative text analysis. The method is used to create a deeper insight and understanding of the concepts meaning, by comparing the municipalities, the similarities and differences are highlighted. The result of this essay is that there are differences between the two municipalities, where Botkyrka is considered advanced within environmental work, whereas Tyresö want to keep up with the development. The similarities and differences are present, however, one thing that is certain is that Agenda 21 as a concept is gone and has been replaced by sustainable development, and that, both municipalities agrees on.
