Abstract [en]

Agriculture struggles with competitive pressure from international exposure, prices that drastically changes, and large environmental impact from the productions different parts. Lean production is a business strategy that´s focusing on the systematic elimination of waste from all aspects of an organization’s operations, where waste is viewed as any use or loss of resources that does not lead directly to creating the product or service a customer request. This study describes Lean production, the connection between Lean and the environment, and also highlights the impact that agriculture has on the environment. The specific focus is on field crop production. A case study was carried out on a crop farm to identify which activities in the production that causes negative environmental impact. With suitable Lean tools and principles, a hypothetical analysis is made to explain what kind of environmental efficiency that is achievable on the farm. The analysis shows that with Lean it could be possible for the company to change many things, everything from lower the amount of spillage and wastage, to increase the company's sustainability through a long-term perspective.
