Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Research in maternity care has for a long time been focused on the woman in labor and herexperiences. More recently descriptions on fathers’ experience, in relation to the birth of theirchild, have been studied. The results in many of these studies showed that the support the mangives to the woman in birth is of great significance for the woman’s well-being, for theoutcome of the delivery, and for the couple’s relationship. However, for many fathers, thechildbirth experience did not meet their expectations. The purpose of this study was todescribe how the father experienced support from the midwife when the partner gave birth totheir child. Semi structured interviews, and inductive manifest content analysis was used fordata gathering and data analysis. The result showed, among other things, fathers desire to beseen as a participating part of the birthgiving couple, to participate in communication, and toget practical advices on how they could help. According to the fathers the midwife had to beexperienced, responsive and informative to be able to support the father. The core of the resultwere the father’s need to be seen and confirmed by the midwife, and particularly the need forindividualized support.
