Att matematik inte är det mest populära ämnet i skolan är ingen nyhet. Flera undersökningar, nationella som internationella, visar på sjunkande attityder till ämnet. Detta arbete syftar till att undersöka grundskoleelevers attityder till matematik, samt om det förekommer skillnader i attityd mellan yngre och äldre elever. För att undersöka detta har enkäter besvarats av 334 elever i årskurs 3-9, det vill säga elever i åldrarna 9-15 år. Undersökningen genomfördes i tre skolor från två olika kommuner i mellersta Sverige. Resultaten visar att det finns vissa skillnader mellan de yngre och de äldre elevernas attityder till matematik. Det finns även stora skillnader när det gäller på vilket sätt matematiken presenteras i undervisningen. De äldre elevernas matematikundervisning består i stor del av läroboksbunden undervisning medan de yngre eleverna har mer varierade arbetssätt. Flera metoder och arbetssätt inom matematiken är presenterade i arbetet exempelvis; grupparbeten, lärobok, laborativ undervisning, utomhusmatematik samt problemlösning. Studien visar dessutom att även lärarrollen och klassrumsklimatet spelar en roll i elevernas attityd till skolämnet.

Abstract [en]

The fact that mathematics is not the most popular subject in school amongst the students is no news. Several studies, both national and international, show that mathematics is not the most popular subject in school. This report aims to investigate primary pupils' attitudes towards mathematics, and if there are differences in attitudes between younger and older students. To investigate this, 334 pupils in the ages between 9 and 15 years have answered a survey. The survey was conducted in three schools from two different counties in central Sweden. The results show that there are some differences between the younger and the older students' attitudes towards mathematics. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that there, according to the students, also are large differences in the way mathematics is presented in the classroom. The older students' mathematics education consists of large part of textbook instructions, while the younger student’s teachers have a more varied approach. Several theories and methods regarding teaching methods in mathematics are presented in the work, for example, group work, textbook, laboratory instruction, outdoor math and problem solving. The result from the survey also show that the role of the teacher and classroom management matters when it comes to the pupil’s attitude towards mathematics.
