The contribution focuses on everyday organizing of waste and in particular on the processes of digitalizing waste management work. Digitalization processes introduce a reconfiguration of former practices and happens through processes whereby the technology is not separated from the context of use but is part of sociomaterial assemblages.Based on a preliminary study, we have analyzed the digitalization processes of a municipal company in charge of waste management in Sweden. The process of digitalization has been initiated in order to meet the goals of optimization of internal efficiency (for example in the areas of transports and logistics, production, communication to the customers) and to meet sustainability goals, in particular the reduction of residual waste.Based on our work on interviews, interactive workshops and observations, we analyze how digitalization happens via material-discursive practice in this context and what it reveals in terms of work practices connected to waste and of waste management itself.Digitalization processes highlight a search for efficiency, a better relation to the customer, improved workflows, cost reduction and for more sustainable outcomes. At the same time one question emerges: what is the service delivered by a waste management company? is it as any other company’s service?
