Abstract [en]

Background: The population is getting older and many want to stay in their own home, which places increased demands on the competence of welfare technology among nursing staff. The registered nurse is responsible for meeting the complex needs of the elderly and through a person-centered approach forming a partnership with people taking considerations into their integrity, dignity, participation and autonomy. Aim: The aim of this study was to create an overview of older people's experiences of welfare technology in their own homes. Method: A general literature review with eight qualitative and two quantitative caring science articles that were analyzed. Results: The results showed that many elderly people want to be able to stay in their own home where everything was familiar. It appeared important to be involved in decision-making in order to maintain their autonomy. Integrity was related to safety, and some elderly people experienced that welfare technology could not replace human contact. Conclusion: The nursing staff need to follow the competence development that welfare technology brings in order to be able to adapt and provide clear information to the elderly. Therefore, welfare technology should be implemented with a person-centered approach to maintain the integrity, dignity, participation and autonomy of the elderly.
