Sweden and the rest of the world are facing challenges caused by a larger share of renewable energy. The energy production is not in sync with humanity’s energy demand throughout hours and even seasons, while also not being able to control the production since it is weather based. This causes a request to shift the energy to a different time. That is where the value of energy storage comes into place and why it’s demanded. Being able to store the renewable- yet uncontrolled energy production, until a time where the demand for energy is needed. The types of energy storage out there under development and the energy storage already being used is some of the things this study will have a look at. It will also take a deeper look on the economic profitability and investment cost of lithium-ion batteries. This study aims to check if an investment in energy storage such as lithium-ion batteries are economically profitable in terms of payback-period. The case study is based on a farm located in Uppsala Sweden, with a 200 kW of photovoltaics on the roof with three different sizes of the batteries. One on 100 kWh, a second on 200 kWh and lastly a third on 600 kWh to see how the self-sufficiency grade changes and what the payback-period would be for these batteries. This study has used peer-reviewed and as recent articles as possible to increase the trustworthiness of the results. Excel with its math functions has been of high use to determine the payback period for the batteries, since an excel file of the whole energy pathways from the photovoltaics as well as the energy demand for the farm was given with a grateful cooperation with El av Sol. The result showed that there is plenty of different energy storages all ranging from small-scale for homes to large-scale for grid stability. The results from the case study along with a sensitivity analysis shows a big change in the payback-period. Depending on the price of the battery, but also the price for electricity on the market. They have a noticeable effect on the payback-period. For this case on the farm the investment has the highest chance of being profitable for the smallest battery. Taken everything into consideration under the given conditions, an investment in lithium-ion battery is not a worthwhile investment for the farm.
