Abstract [en]

Description: This scientific research aims towards studying and analyzing several passive cooling and heating methods in various climates. It also aims to inspect the efficiency of those methods, what they can provide, and the difference they make in internal temperatures and their amount. Finally, the study researches the methods that are suitable for the cold climate of Sweden, and whether a passive house is beneficial in such a case. Purpose: The study includes an explanation of passive methods used if they are suitable, based on several references that were analyzed. Method: The research method for this study was analyzing numerous scientific articles and using reliable sites.  Results: The results show that a good way of saving energy is through the usage of passive cooling in the summer. Taking Beersheba as an example, when natural ventilation, windows shielding and (WWR = 15%) were used, 59% less energy was consumed compared to regular buildings. On the other hand, when the same method was used during winter, it requires higher energy for heating. Passive cooling was not suitable for Sweden since it cools the temperature of the building in the summer period and reduces the heating capacity during the winter period, as the buildings need more energy for heating, which leads to energy loss. Conclusion:  In conclusion, passive methods are appropriate in summer as they save energy but are unreliable in winter. The temperature difference inside the buildings was acceptable, meaning that the temperature decreased in summer and rose in winter in hot and temperate regions in general. The results were different for regions with cold climates and numerous studies are needed to achieve worthy benefits. It is not recommended to use passive houses in Sweden now, but more studies could be conducted on the passive techniques used to achieve the maximum benefit from a building.
