Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: End-of-life care is provided to patients with terminal illnesses in healthcare, nursing homes and at home. The aim of palliative care is to alleviate patients suffering and to promote their quality of life. Previous research describes patients and relatives' experiences of palliative care at the end of life. Aim: To describe nurses experiences of palliative care at the end of life. Method: A qualitative study based on 11 nursing research articles. Results: Two main themes and five sub- themes were created from the analysis. The first theme was challenges in palliative care at the end-of-life, the nurses experienced a lack of communication, uncertainty, organizational factors and emotional challenges. The second theme, opportunities for palliative care at the end-of-life, the nurses described the importance of a caring relationship and person-centered care to provide good palliative care. Conclusion: In order for nurses to be able to experience greater safety in the care of patients at the end of life, more training and support from the organization and employees is needed. Setting aside time for reflection and conversation in the work group can contribute to creating a better work environment, which can result in good palliative care.
