Abstract [sv]

Metod: En kvalitativ litteraturstudie.

Abstract [en]

Background: Previous research describes patients' perspectives regarding language barrier, interpreter use, cultural differences and cultural knowledge. According to patients, there is widespread risk of unequal care when nurses are less competent to adapt to other cultures. This can lead to challenges in care, which can expose patients to unnecessary care suffering. Aim: The purpose is to describe nurses' experiences of caring for patients in a multicultural healthcare system. Method: A qualitative literature review. The content of ten qualitative articles was reviewed and analyzed. Result: The result revealed two themes on the purpose of the degree project: abilities in the professional role and challenges in the professional role. The theme abilities in the professional role was divided into two more sub-themes: own strategies for dealing with communication difficulties and to be able to use an interpreter. The theme challenges in the professional role was divided in to four sub-themes: to face communication difficulties, to use an interpreter, to face cultural differences and to need cultural knowledge. Conclusion: The nurses experienced that they need more cultural knowledge to be able to cope with challenges and difficulties in the care meeting with patients from a different cultural background.
