Abstract [en]
Background: Palliative care in the final stages of life is care given to patients in their last period of life. Palliative care aims to promote well-being, alleviate suffering, and create the best possible quality of life. Nurses have a great responsibility in palliative care towards patients but also relatives. Aim: To study nurses´ experiences of palliative care at the end of life. Method: A general literature review. Thirteen articles, of which 11 qualitative, and two quantitative were analyzed based on aim, method, and results. Results: Three themes emerged in the results: emotional impact on the nurse, the nurse's knowledge and competence, and communication between the nurse, patient, and the relatives. The results showed that nurses experienced a lack of knowledge and an emotional strain. Communication with patients and their loved ones is sometimes seen as a challenge. Good and clear communication can improve the last time in life. Conclusion: For palliative care to be as good as possible for the patient, relatives and nurses, nurses need more training, receive emotional support and pedagogical competence to handle different situations that can be perceived as challenging. Keywords: Communication, emotional impact, general literature review, knowledge, nurses
