Abstract [en]

During the last decades social media has played a central part of modern society and its correlation to mental health has been discussed. This study initiated with a research overview which demonstrated ambiguous relationships between the use of social media and people's mental health. The purpose of this study was to examine whether or not there was a correlation between the use of social media and mental health and if the effect had a different impact on the ages 18-25 and 65 and older. This study had a quantitative approach. By the use of surveys data has been collected. A sample of 204 answers has been gathered through an availability selection which has been processed and analyzed by the software IBM SPSS statistics version 28. The result of this study shows correlation between the use of social media and mental health. The higher extent of time and frequency spent on social media, the lower the degree of mental health was estimated. An analysis of previous research and the theories consuming life and the elementary forms of social life has been made. The databases used were Scopus, Web of science and Google scholar.
