Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

School counselors have an unique position where they have the opportunity to identify students who suffer from mental illness. The school counselor is the profession within the school staff that can be seen as the binding link between school, social services and health care. Previous research shows that youth who suffer from mental illness address first to the school counselor and then to other school staff. The school counselor's task is to work to promote health and prevent mental illness among the students. This study examines the school counselors' views on mental illness in young people between the ages of 13–19, and whether they have the right conditions to carry out preventive work. In this qualitative study, eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight school counselors, four working at comprehensive school and four in upper secondary school. The results of the study show that students' mental illness is caused by difficulties in family relationships and the youth's social environment. The informants stated that there are shortcomings in the promotion and prevention work against mental illness among youth.
