Abstract [en]

Purpose: Green roofs are the subject for this degree project. A 60’s multi-family house in central Uppsala, Fålhagen 3:1, is studied regarding different possibilities with green roofs. Method: A literature study on how green roofs affect the community's infrastructure was done through the examination of existing scientific reports and theses at a higher level. The property was visited and an ocular inspection was made of the area. Finally, a survey was made which was awarded to the public where five green roofing possibilities were presented. The five roofing possibilities presented were; stormwater management and its ability to purify and delay precipitation, cultivation, biodiversity to enable the conservation of endangered species, thermal insulation through sedums, and recreation to encourage health promotion activities. Results: A larger proportion of respondents in the survey, with age groups between 15 – 60, expressed the importance of increasing the proportion of green roofs in today's society. The positive environmental impact that green roofs can give was considered to be more important than the possibilities for cultivation and recreation. The majority of the respondents also felt that they were willing to pay a higher monthly sum to live in a green-roofed residence. The green roof forms small ecosystems that can be a valuable hub for the multi-family house and the five different opportunities with green roofs described can contribute to a concept with benefits for both the environment and people. Therefore the best option is to make a mixing concept out of all five opportunities presented. Conclusions: Most of the respondents felt that the idea of implementing a complex green roof structure on the existing building would benefit each household. However, when implementing a water-based green roof structure on the existing building, on the roof of an old parking garage dated to the 60’s, does generate individual problems based on moisture, constructions errors and economic wealth based from the investors.
